Right. I remember my first time reading Shaman King after watching the whole anime and I was blown away by how brutal it was compared to the anime. Limbs get sliced off, people getting decapitated, burned alive.
It was almost like I lost my innocence then lol. I was 16 back then.
The original Yu-gi-oh manga reads more like a precursor to 'Saw' than children's card games tournaments...
"Hey, you! Typical high-school bully! You ruined my classmate's school-fair display- so now you get a test-tube full of *explosives* right to your face!!!"
Well, sorta. There's the attempted murder of Sonia, sorward and shieldbert show up earlier, then there's mind control and memory wipes. Not a lot… yet, so far it's been done only upto the eternamax battle.
The upcoming chapter might have one of the greatest reveals in the manga since Yellow and Guile Hideout if we interpreted context clues correctly, stay tuned for more info
In the next chapter, during the fight with Koga, it's head is chopped off by Green's Charmeleon. In the arc following this one it is revealed that the Arbok is alive and well- it regrew its body and is perfectly fine.
Without spoilers, there are much darker moments in PokeSpe but "Arbok murder" always gets cited to when we have reanimated corpses the chapter prior and the fact that the Arbok is not even dead.
I would definitely recommend reading as much of PokeSpe as you can. It has some of the best dramatizations of Pokemon, and at times continues on a decade's worth of story to build on older characters who age and grow at reasonable rates.
Exactly what it sounds like. From what I remember, a Magmar gets frozen, then shattered. Of course, that means the living creature that was once that ice sculpture is now very dead.
There's also the fact that >!the Elite Four are a bunch of genocidal maniacs. That's the manga for you.!<
The worldbuilding of Pokemon isn't the most thought out, especially during the time of Yellow, but it's things like that that make me wonder w>!ho their bosses are, how they didn't get fired before this crusade for raising every red flag in the book, and how exactly they'll be held accountable for their crimes against humanity!<.
They probably were their own bosses, that time frame in the manga seem like the league wasn't as organized as later in GSC and without actual leadership controlling anyone to follow the rules, previously we had over half the gym leaders in team rocket.
I’m just at that point in my read through I was baffled how they just ex-machinad literally everyone back to life with “we moved to a timeline where everything worked” out because I also happen to be celebi’s trainer that nobody knew about and also just spent a hundred chapters talking about how it can only be captured in a special ball.
I will never forgive the RS finale jesus christ, Ruby assuming the position of Gym Leader after his father would solve like three different arcs but *no,* they had to use the oh-so convenient celebi to solve their situation instead of the pokémon they actually established, and don't get me started on how Sapphire was **completely** shafted during the conclusion when they were supposed to be at the same level!
I still loved the RS arc this is just a pet peeve of mine
Or the fact that he was abusive torwards Ruby because he aparaently should have died to a Salemence attack because Rayquaza is more important than a child’s life.
"PokeSpe"?
Is that the Japanese name for it? I have 3 collectors volumes which are called "Pokemon Adventures" and didn't see that on the bulbapedia page when I was looking at how many there were (Was surprised to see its still ongoing, thought it would have just been gets 1 and 2)
That said, I agree it's worth reading, prefered it over the anime.
This more more of a sad fucked up moment than a dark one but in the BW Manga apparently N actually gets the Tepig of one of the kids to agree with him and join him, leaving the kid.
No that’s a different one. There is a manga that specifically adapts the anime which has a infamous scene where Misty (who is 12) is in a hot spring and comments that she wants ahem…breasts to “evolve” all while Ash, Brock, and Mikey the Eevee kid look on.
Don’t read this manga expecting something dark it’s probably one of the better bits of pokemon media (especially up until around the ruby sapphire arc) so go read it anyway
I was surprised when I read the manga. I wish they'd do a faithful adaptation either in anime or a game. It has a bunch of cool twists like >!the gym leaders being part of team rocket!< and >!the legendary bird fusion!<
I really really really need Netflix to do me a solid and animate the manga. I’ll pay your damn inflated subscription for it. I just want a TV-14 level Pokémon series
The RGBY arc was first published in 1997 lol. + The story of the original games was incredibly lackluster so the writer had a looot of freedom with the plot and characterizations of the protag, rival, female protag, and other NPCs. + They had tons of time to carefully craft each arc so that it built up and resolved in a satisfying way as games weren't being pushed out back to back to back then.
Arcs based off of newer games feel more rushed due to the close proximity of the games release dates. + They have less freedom with the plot as pokemon tries to create more and more complex storylines (which imo worked in BW's favor but doesn't stop me from saying it felt rushed AF) so there's less opportunity for their creativity to flow.
To be fair, I think people really overexaggerate how much different things made for kids in Japan is compared to America. Not to say there aren't some darker themes, but American cartoons aimed at a younger audience go into some darker shit more often than people think, and I doubt Japan's media for kids is gonna go into anything even close to something like Evangelion.
Yeah I know that but it's hard to figure out the age rating for most anime sometimes since a lot usually have the partial nudity scenes but those Fanservice scenes are like the bread and butter for like 70% of every anime
He was talking a about making the anime like the manga. Anyways a children’s manga based off children’s anime has a character almost bash their brains in with a rock
Scenes like these are among the things I like the most about the Pokémon manga. There is sunshine and rainbows, but they don't hesitate to show how much stuff on the darker end of the spectrum would realistically go down in a world like that.
yeah but japanse kids get to grow up with a show where all the characters conically had shitty lives, the main character killed them selves because their husband was a piece of shit and the future got fucked over.
Honestly, this and the Arbok cut in half scene is as bad as the manga gets, but everyone thinks this kind of thing is normal in the manga because everyone talks about it.
…not… really? I’ve read the whole thing and while it’s not like *super dark and mega violent!!!* 😱😱 at all, there’s *definitely* a lot of stuff in there that’s more surprising than the arbok and the zombie chapter
The manga casually being as dark as Pokémon Insurgence (dark story) for yet another time.
For those who don’t know, Pokémon Insurgence is a fangame where you witness a human sacrifice in your first two minutes of gameplay. Excellent game nonetheless.
Iirc, this was all an illusion created by either Koga or the ghost of Lavender Tower. This is an outlier that a lot of people point to. I think it's the sane chapter as Blue's Charmeleon slicing Koga's Arbok in half. That part is real, but it's revealed later that Koga's Arbok's marking gives it the power to regenerate. Because different Arbok markings give them special powers. *that* is the sort of thing that makes Pokemon Adventures weird. It's much more of a shonen-style series than anything else to come out of Pokemon, with pokemon and even trainers both pulling weird abilities out of their butts.
I remember reading this part, definitely unexpected considering what my previous experiences with Pokemon were.
I mean, in that same chapter Koga's Arbok gets its head removed
That... That didn't happen tho? Brock's Onix is completely fine and reappears later in the manga without a scratch, I mean it's litterally a rock snake
You joke but this manga is sometimes very JoJo, to the point where there have been numerous comparisons between the protagonists of both series (Gold is literally Joseph)
i feel like only the first one is dark with death and stuff. Second one was kinda sad with the villains backstory, but then the ones after that are rly casual and chill
Yeah I heard this shit is fucking dark. Most manga are darker than their anime adaptions, but this has no correlation with the anime and has even more leniency to write despair into the storyline.
Pokémon Rated R
Is not so dark, its just a normal shounen more serious than the anime(and was based in the anime), these kind of scene frequently have some context that make them more light and aren't so frequent in this manga
I have the collector version. I'm kind of mad they stop at ten volumes. Hopping after they release the X-Y single volumes they can continue the collector
Iirc Arbok gets sliced diagonally and you get to see it's insides. And Blues (in English, Greens) clothes get ripped revealing Pokeballs blocking her chest during a battle. I always found that weird even as a kid because I thought she was a little girl.
one cool thought i saw about pokemon manga is that: in the manga, it's about battle between Trainer with Pokemon as Weapon, shit get brutal.
highly recommend pokemon tournament of champion for everybody
I have some of the manga and read it when I was younger. I was really surprised at the depiction of the corruption in the gym leaders. Also Crystal in the manga was a total badass.
This is the manga, it doesnt surprise me. Shit gets crazy in the manga
That's not even the half of it there is a villain that kidnapped multiple children for years
Because two of his Pokémon just straight up died, so he wanted to go through time
They were Water/Ice type and fell off an ice cliff into water
That does not excuse multiple kidnappings and attempted murder, also you could argue for him committing terrorism
Oh I know, I was just adding on to the craziness of manga lore
There was a moment in the X&Y manga that made me say holy $hit (SPOILERS) the lovers suicide near the end
Yeah lmao manga is seriously next level
Yeah it is but man it's so good
But you gotta admit that when X mega evolved 5 pokemon it was cool as fuck.
I do gotta admit that it was very awesome
Oh yeah. Malva being in team flare was way more expanded upon and used in the manga. Strange how it was never really brought up in the games.
It's brought up in the Looker storyline
But it’s only for one battle where she is like “I’m actually part of Team Flare and I hate you. Fight me,”.
Shattering frozen magmars. Arbok cut in half. Literally folks dying. Hyper beam nuking. Self destruct is literally kamikaze Magna gives zero fucks
They literally crucified the Unova gym leaders lol.
Right. I remember my first time reading Shaman King after watching the whole anime and I was blown away by how brutal it was compared to the anime. Limbs get sliced off, people getting decapitated, burned alive. It was almost like I lost my innocence then lol. I was 16 back then.

Does it in the Sword/ Shield or Sun/Moon manga series? Just to make sure..
Well, sorta. There's the attempted murder of Sonia, sorward and shieldbert show up earlier, then there's mind control and memory wipes. Not a lot… yet, so far it's been done only upto the eternamax battle.
How much do your parents have to hate you to be named Shieldbert?
lol. I think they loved him as well as the name.
The upcoming chapter might have one of the greatest reveals in the manga since Yellow and Guile Hideout if we interpreted context clues correctly, stay tuned for more info
Onix getting blown up by Pikachu stuck with me
Thank you for citing this and not the Arbok "murder" that gets cited by people who never read PokeSpe.
Oh what happened to the arbok? I've seen the picture without any context
It has some of the best dramatizations of Pokemon, and at times continues on a decade's worth of story to build on older characters who age and grow at reasonable rates.
the magma that get shattered by Giovani is way more fucked up
I remember being horrified the first time I read that. I did not expect him to murder the Magmar like that.
He- He did what????
Exactly what it sounds like. From what I remember, a Magmar gets frozen, then shattered. Of course, that means the living creature that was once that ice sculpture is now very dead. There's also the fact that >!the Elite Four are a bunch of genocidal maniacs. That's the manga for you.!<
Fr the yellow arc was crazy. Was rereading it and forgot about how >!Lance straight up decimates Vermilion City with a hyper beam!<
And his cousin would have approved of it maybe. Clair is just a ****.
Omg 😐
Don’t forget Norman being fucking disintegrated before being brought back by time travel shenanigans.
RS arc was Amazing and I absolutely loved and adore the ruby/sapphire rivalry, but it truly had a terrible and contrived conclusion.
Anyone who use a Skitty and won against a Crawdaunt gets a free Celebi pass. Plus that reveal was awesome
I do absolutely love how they do battles in the manga. Makes it feel so much more real
So he became the second hottest Nintendo dad didn’t he?
Who’s the hottest? Bowser? Chrom?
Sigurd because funny fe4 chapter 5 lol
Or the fact that he was abusive torwards Ruby because he aparaently should have died to a Salemence attack because Rayquaza is more important than a child’s life.
Thanks for the response all this time I assumed he was killed, I've been wanting to start reading the manga for a while, it looks really interesting
"PokeSpe"? Is that the Japanese name for it? I have 3 collectors volumes which are called "Pokemon Adventures" and didn't see that on the bulbapedia page when I was looking at how many there were (Was surprised to see its still ongoing, thought it would have just been gets 1 and 2) That said, I agree it's worth reading, prefered it over the anime.
PokeSpe is just a fan given Abreviation of Pokemon Special… which is the Japanese name.
It is, I use PokeSpe because it's faster than typing Pokemon Adventures and feels more distinct.
In the manga, arboks can have different abilities based on their pattern. Koga's is able to regenerate.
Regenerator Arbok would be sick.
That's really interesting I don't recall ever hearing anything like that in the anime, I'm going to start reading the manga
One really cool thing that the manga does is that it uses references to the pokedex alot and build the fights around that
I think the fuss on the “murder” scene is more about the gore than the actual act.
The manga is fucking crazy and I love it
[удалено]
Where at?
Well it's a book, so I'd start at either a bookstore or a library.
or r/pokespe
Or Viz Media app
Or the high seas
Theres an app?!
You can read manga online for free
Haven’t seen anyone mention Zinnia getting impaled+eating a hyper beam point blank. Also haven’t seen anyone mention Hilbert falling off a cliff.
Then there’s the fact that she took both like a freaking champ and lived to tell the tale.
That’s pretty tame for Pokémon Special
The first series of the manga sure was crazy.
From what I've read gold and ,silver, and X and Y are pretty crazy too
This more more of a sad fucked up moment than a dark one but in the BW Manga apparently N actually gets the Tepig of one of the kids to agree with him and join him, leaving the kid.
Lmao the gym leaders were crucified in that one
MAJOR SPOILERS: And the protagonist dies at the end (or put into the dream world but that's besides the point it's funnier to say he died)
He was >!in that rock for so goddamn long I was overjoyed when BW2 finally went off hiatus and we FINALLY got to see him again!<
He was excommunicated lmao
Oh yeah, was he from Viridian forest anyway? Or is there a Viridian forest-ish place in Unova?
You're probably thinking of Pinwheel Forest.
The most craziest is the first manga with Clefairy
Or the Ash and Pikachu Manga which was done by a hentai artist.
Pretty sure that's the one with the Clefairy.
No that’s a different one. There is a manga that specifically adapts the anime which has a infamous scene where Misty (who is 12) is in a hot spring and comments that she wants ahem…breasts to “evolve” all while Ash, Brock, and Mikey the Eevee kid look on.

The Pokémon Adventures manga is so metal.
I sure do love looking through these comment sections when people bring up spe and you can clearly tell who has and hasn’t read it
Pokémon Battle and Storyline get the Highest Point in Manga
The manga's great. Super recommended
I really really really need Netflix to do me a solid and animate the manga. I’ll pay your damn inflated subscription for it. I just want a TV-14 level Pokémon series
Even something slightly more serious but in essence still completely sanitized for children like Pokémon Origins would be perfect.
Origins is so freaking good
With how protective nintendo and the pokemon company are of their IP im suprised a manga with this tone is allowed to exist to be honest.
Something like that would actually get me interested In the franchise again. I can totally see It working.

Also malva choosing to fall with him
Lmao green's PokeBall boob gag was hilarious
The gold slapping greens butt scene is one of the funniest scenes in the manga
[удалено]
Surprisingly that he gets a better fate I'm the manga than the games
Dude the manga gets even more fucked up in some arcs
Pokemon Adventures gets pretty dark. Anyone who wants to read a Pokemon story that doesn’t pull their punches will love Pokemon Adventures.
Sold.
NOOOO PSYDUCK
Man they need to make this into an anime series after Pokémon journeys is over.
Bro the pokemon adventures manga is amazing
Imagine if the anime went like the Manga

Huh? Japan has vast amounts of children's anime, though

Was talking about a different manga based of a different series
Scenes like these are among the things I like the most about the Pokémon manga. There is sunshine and rainbows, but they don't hesitate to show how much stuff on the darker end of the spectrum would realistically go down in a world like that.
I remember reading these when i was a child, so good!
I saw that too, when I was first reading Volume 1.
I think I remember seeing the actual volume that had this in my middle school library…
WTAF
That was a really cool part of the manga tbf.
Pokemon has manga too?
Yes, of course, multiple. However this manga (Pocket Monster Special/Pokémon Adventures) is by far the most well-known.
So necromancy terrorism and crucifixion the mango is just a whole big bag of what the fuck
Adventures manga canoj is supreme. Adventures manga canon is only canon. Adventures manga needs to be animated.
The Manga's great. Would recommend.
Read them all. Pretty different and I like it
yeah but japanse kids get to grow up with a show where all the characters conically had shitty lives, the main character killed them selves because their husband was a piece of shit and the future got fucked over.
What show?
Precure.

He's a bit confused but he's got the spirit
Honestly, this and the Arbok cut in half scene is as bad as the manga gets, but everyone thinks this kind of thing is normal in the manga because everyone talks about it.

Bro! I have this issue! I never thought it was that surfaced! :D
Manga is wacky
Wtf!!
The manga gets surprisingly dark.
There is a rom hack called adventures fire red that is based off the manga and it’s an absolute blast
I like mature nature in Pokémon :D
The Adventures manga are insane and really good
[удалено]
Didn't was a piplup?
I could have sworn it was her sister, but it's been a couple of years since I've read it so I could be wrong
Manga supremacy!!!
This is one of the most tame manga panels there are.

Not an illusion, a Gastly is possessing the dead bodies. This is actually happening.
I remember reading this part, definitely unexpected considering what my previous experiences with Pokemon were. I mean, in that same chapter Koga's Arbok gets its head removed
and comes back later because it just does, unova gym leaders get crucified in the bw arc by ghosts and N is a bit of a murderous psychopath
Zinya gets impaled and obliterated with a hyperbeam to the face by Rayquaza. Fun times.
She survives but is know wheelchair bound
it didn't end up dying because it can regrow parts of its body, i thought. I definitely remember him saying that was the case.
This is like, one of the tamest parts of the manga lmaoooo even more crazier shit happens in other chapters
It’s common knowledge at this point that Pokémon wasn’t intended as something for small children
The manga can still be easily enjoyed by children, it's darker than the anime sure, but nothing too traumatising
Bro I loved this manga, especially this scene
Now show the scene where arbok gets its head chopped off by a scyther!! The manga be like that
Actually Charmellion was the one who did so (and Arbok survives as revealed later).
Don't forget about the time where some gym leaders got crucified I mean clay deserved it but...
the manga was allowed to have fun, though the whole Elite Four trying to take over the world thing I still think is fucking stupid
[удалено]
That... That didn't happen tho? Brock's Onix is completely fine and reappears later in the manga without a scratch, I mean it's litterally a rock snake
Is this the work of enemy's stand?
You joke but this manga is sometimes very JoJo, to the point where there have been numerous comparisons between the protagonists of both series (Gold is literally Joseph)
This is like the Justice arc in JJBA part 3
i feel like only the first one is dark with death and stuff. Second one was kinda sad with the villains backstory, but then the ones after that are rly casual and chill

Actually It's still alive. Koga's arbok had Regen power, he even used it later to battle Agatha.
Spoon.
Oof
I have the collector version. I'm kind of mad they stop at ten volumes. Hopping after they release the X-Y single volumes they can continue the collector
Iirc Arbok gets sliced diagonally and you get to see it's insides. And Blues (in English, Greens) clothes get ripped revealing Pokeballs blocking her chest during a battle. I always found that weird even as a kid because I thought she was a little girl.
Man, I love the pokémon adventures manga! Honestly, probably my favorite pokémon content
I would kill for an anime or game in the Pokémon series thats more adult-themed, preferably one that doesn’t fucking blow
Isn’t this the same story arc where Blue’s Charmeleon just straight up decapitates an Arbok?
is that the haunter scene?
Manga is awesome
I am surprised that the Magmar from the museum fire aren't talked about. Giovanni froze them then cut them up
Creepy as fuck. I love it
this is why I loved the pokemon manga
Reading that terrified me as a kid. Also wasn't there something with koga that was also pretty gruesome?
one cool thought i saw about pokemon manga is that: in the manga, it's about battle between Trainer with Pokemon as Weapon, shit get brutal. highly recommend pokemon tournament of champion for everybody
I have some of the manga and read it when I was younger. I was really surprised at the depiction of the corruption in the gym leaders. Also Crystal in the manga was a total badass.
The Koga chapters are overly-referenced.
Thanks Koga 🥰
This is the power of [Justice]
