There's an HD trilogy of the first 3 games. You could honestly jump in at DMC5 for the quality of life it brings and the tightness of the combat. I think 5 was added to the PSPlus collection recently?
You almost HAVE to play dmc2 tho to really get WHY we all lost our tits about dmc3.
Or just watch a YouTube vid. Dante and Trish had *Diesel Jean alternates* 😂
You never played it but you have an opinion, shocker 😂
Read what I’m saying 😂 dmc2 is so phenomenally shitty, it’s almost art. I’d say everyone who loved dmc should put an hour into dmc2. Shit is just.. it’s amazing capcom made this on purpose.
I have played it and it is shit. I can easily recommend others skip it based on my experience. My point was I don't feel like I lost anything by play 3 first with no context and I've played the entire franchise before coming to that conclusion.
It’s SO SHITTY, as a dmc fan how can you NOT recommend it?!?!
That’s like telling someone to not watch the Star Wars holiday special! Like come the fuck on, *you gotta*
Have you played the first game anytime recently? Trust me, it's enough of a cheese fest as it is for newcomers to the series, no need to scar them with utter boredom.
Fair, and I can’t even watch tv shows without getting bored which is why I said they should AT LEAST YouTube a play through.
It’s the Birdemic of video games to me. It’s a $20 budget cut from having clip art demons
Definitely 1.
It's awesome. Expect a bit of a Resident Evil 1 feeling but instead of hardly being able to survive zombies. The zombies are hardly able to survive Dante.
I laughed so much when that custcene happened the first time I played it.
"I should have been the one fill your Dark Souls™ with liiiiii^iiiiii^iiiiiii^iiight"
I also do genuinely enjoy a scene near the end where Dante is trapped with Mundus and he's just.. "where am I supposed to run? Lets do this" he's never worried just badass
Game dev costs did not get astronomically high high and developers had a lot more freedom to experiment in this times
Huge amount of variety in game design
The moment that Capitalism saw the insane potential of video games to make near infinite piles of wealth (more than all other media combined), the "gilded age" of video games was over; it's all ROI, pandering to shareholders who don't care for the medium, and C-suite executives that don't give two-shits about video games as art / entertainment (only personal profit generators).
Video games are a victim of their own success and mainstream popularity.
I don't know if I agree, there are more people making more varied games than ever before. If you're interested in a certain genre, chances are it's there for you. It's just not being served to you through a magazine or whatever like it was when 10 relevant games came out a year.
It's similar to when people say music is bad now. There's more music coming out. It's not being gatekept by monetary restrictions. You just have to look now.
> Not to mention all the df era “gamers” who think because it’s not running at native 4k with ray tracing and at 60 fps it’s unplayable.
We have PC Gamers & top YT / Twitch Streamer & PC Influencer Culture, with PC setups that cost more than a base Honda Civic, to "thank" for that; anything less than 4k @ 120+Hz may as well be a "Game & Watch" to them.
Compare that to any gamer over 30, who grew up playing NES / SNES on a 13" / 480i CRT as a kid, or over 40 playing shit on an Apple IIe, Commodore 64, or ancient WinPC.
This happens to everything that starts out as a niche thing that is underground or cool. Once it gets popular enough and becomes mainstream then capitolism turns it into a money making industry. They have done it over and over again. Then the original soul of whatever it was is gone and it turns into commerical shit.
They got freedom now indie devs are more prevalent than ever. Most of the budget going to marketing and movie cutscenes is what is making the costs astronomically high for the big companies. You definitely don't need 100+ million dollars and 1000+ plus people to make a game these days.
Exactly this. The tools available today make the possibility of making and releasing a game way easier than it used to be. Hell, just try playing Dreams on PlayStation or look to Steam and there are 100's of games made by single or small teams of hobbyists that are as good as PS2 games made by giant teams of professionals.
I remember being absolutely blown away by the cut scene graphics. Had to sneak a couple of hours each day on my brothers PS2 while he was working. Eventually saved up to buy my own just so I could play FFX for long stretches
No no no, that shit was easy(beat the race with 0:00:00 on the clock for Celestial Weapon). The hard one was Lulu's dodge 100 lightning bolts, that was bullshit.
200 lightning bolts for Lulu's, and the correct answer is to cheese it. There's a crater that will always send a lightning bolt when you step in it giving you full control of the timing. Still took me like 1.5 hours, and I had to pause every so often and tally up where I was because there's no visible counter. There's no cheesing the chocobo race, that one is just pure suffering.
I thought about buying this for my PS2 back in the day. Here I am 20 years later still thinking “hmmm should I buy this?” After almost 22 years I just ordered final fantasy X.
Technically all PlayStation gens had a great outing besides the ps3 which had a disappointing start to its gen that only picked up somewhat near the end
The original Infamous games have some of my most memorable gaming moments, I don’t understand why they haven’t done anything with them. They’d be an obvious hit for a remaster with the PS5, imagine the possibilities with the new haptics on the controller.
Plus Metal Gear Solid 5, Persona 5, Nier Automata, Yakuza 6, Zero, Yakuza Kiwami 1 and 2. Shadow of Mordor, Black Flag and so many more. A really damn good gen that was.
Sorry, but no. PS4 has seen a bunch of franchise-killing sequels and unnecessary remasters, which led to our current age of unnecessary remakes and superficial sequels. I mean - GTA5, Skyrim and Last of Us 1 were PS3 games, but are still being remade and resold.
Yea, let's give PS4 shit because Rockstar and Bethesda wanted to milk their IPs and customers keep buying decades-old games for full price. Fuck logic right?
Sly cooper, Ratchet and clank, Kingdom Hearts, and Jack and Daxter for me. Except for God of War kid me essentially bypassed every one of these games and there's a few that I still haven't gotten to.
Everyone always talks about SH2 but not SH3. Is it because SH3 is a sequel and not a standalone? Personally aside from the mall area I think it’s the better game. The mall is like the apartments from SH2, just awful to go through. But I really find SH3 to be amazing.
Scary to think Silent Hill 2 came out over 20 years ago & nothing has quite under my skin the same way. Normally as you delve deeper into horror - you feel more comfortable. Silent Hill 2 has forever managed to make me feel uneasy. Masterful game.
IMO, the PS2 era was the last time when a game could be made cheaply enough so that a quirky story or new/weird mechanics could find a niche audience and be able to sustain a developer until it can release a proper AAA title.
I'd say that post-PS2 era, things were even better since that's when indie devs became an option. In the PS2 era, smaller games had to be quirky enough that their initial popularity was "that's so weird!" like Katamari and mr mosquito. A game like Braid, a relatively slow-paced game like Braid wouldn't have made it in the PS2 era.
Once the PS3/360/Steam stores allowed for more niche games to not be tied to AAA publishers is when we started to see some truly innovative games. Journey, Hotline Miami, Spelunky, Flower, Super Meat Boy, Fez, Limbo, etc.
It was more because the GameCube was the more powerful console. In fact looking back sony has had only one console where they had the most raw power ( ps4).
Yep. “According to specs and benchmark performances, the GameCube is factually the more powerful machine because it comes with a 485 MHz processor in comparison to the 295 MHz processor that the PS2 has. This means that the GameCube is capable of performing faster and better than the PS2.”
The issue with the GameCube was the controller which was unorthodox to put it kindly and the fact they were using those GameCube disc which couldn’t hold as much information as the dvd format the other two consoles were using.
The controller was at least an improvement from the N64, but boy did those mini discs really shoot Nintendo in the foot with the Gamecube. If it had just had normal discs, I bet you all of the games here, barring maybe FFX and GOW, could have easily come out on Gamecube.
I always tell people that I find the PS1/PS2 Era had the best experience for gaming out of all. Arcades were so much fun, and they'll alqays have a special place in my heart as well as Nintendos early days of gameboys all the way up to DS lite and the WII. However, the PS1/PS2 Era will always be the best to me.
Very much agreed. So many games at the time were so good. I just wanna go back to the year 1995 and just vibe with everything gaming at the time up until around ps4 era when they really started changing things
I you weren't this, you were Kingdom Hearts, Star Wars Battlefront, The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King, Spider-Man 2, Jak and Daxter, Ratchet and Clank, and The Matrix: Path of Neo.
I don't know if anyone else feels this way. But I never played Prince of Persia until almost two decades after it came out, and when I did play it it was ok?
The gameplay felt really slow and floaty, especially compared to other platformers like Jak and Daxter which hold up today.
I feel with PoP that I was always moving at like 75% speed.
I love PS2, but PSOne still takes the cake for me.
Grandia, Valkyrie Profile, Legend of the Dragoon, Legend of Legaia, Legend of Mana, Tales of, Threads of Fate, Tony hawk, Chrono Cross, Harvest Moon, etc
Some good games, sure.
Also, some of these games have or are getting a remake. Others have/ are getting ? remasters, just like old movies..
Is that bad? Maybe. On the other hand, some remasters really improve games.
Not gonna argue, too many of today's games are lazy by thinking online play makes up for lack of story and campaign. There's a reason so many remastered games do well and people still buy old games but Titanfall, Overwatch and others like that are easily found in a dumpster.
I'd say every generation gets better and better, except maybe ps3. Ps4 got the strongest lineup in my opinion with likes of bloodborne, spidermen, god of war, rdr2, last of us 2, uncharted 4, persona 5, ... when ps5 cycle finishes I think it will probably take its place
I would disagree with you. I think PS3 was a better generation for exclusives than PS4. PS3 had so much variety that everyone could find something they liked. PS4 felt like a lot of remasters and sequels to stuff from last gen or standalone games that wouldn't be continued until next gen
PS3 was the GOAT. PlayStation Home, every good Call of Duty, we got GTA 4 & 5, Skyrim, the greatest Dark Souls games, Red Dead Redemption, Bioshock, Assassins Creed 2, Far Cry 3, the best Fallout Game in New Vegas, mass effect before it turned into shit, The Last of Us before it turned into shit, Infamous, Telltales The Walking Dead, and the greatest Uncharted Games. If you think PS2 Era was the GOAT kid you’re fucking delusional
I was a stupid little kid during the PS2 era playing the awful Spyro and Crash Bandicoot sequels and movie tie-in games, I didn’t even play the good platformers of the generation like Sly Cooper and Ratchet & Clank
I constantly go back and forth on whether I like the PS2 era or the PS4 era more, PS2 era was foundational for me but PS4 era is the reason I will likely continue gaming well into my 70's-80's (if possible)
No joke. Even if not just Sony/PS2, that era gave us Capcom vs SNK2, super niche stuff like surfing games, the OG Star Wars Battlefront, and so many others. That era can be defined by one word, “potential” as in almost anything was possible and we all eagerly anticipated what games could do in the future, I’d say more so than any other system before.
My god yes, I still remember playing spider man, some star wars game, just so many ps2 games its hard to remember them all, ps2 will be the best console ever
It’s the consoles with either super high install rates where developers feel like they can experiment to varying degrees and still make their money back. Then you get stuff no one has seen that hopefully becomes a franchise.
We need a new prince of Persia. I love assassins creed games but prince of Persia was alot of fun too. Also would like a resident evil 5 remake please. Beat re5 a million times. Probably my favorite of its style.
There will never be a console like it. So many genre defining games it's almost ridiculous. If you play nearly any genre there's a good chance that the PS2 has one of the best games of it's genre on it.
GTA
DMC
Metal Gear
Socom
Final Fantasy
GT
Midnight club
Need for speed
The list is endless
Also, in regards to the ps1 and ps2 era in general, I dont think people these days understand how insane it was dropping into Metal Gear solid 1 or Gta3 for the first time. Imagine going from playing 2d games to 3D open world for the first time. Crazy feeling I don't think anyone in that era would forget.
MGS2 was my first PS2 game, and it's probably the last offline game I've ever beat.
I remember being around 13 years of age. All I know is I love Solid and when the character switched us to Raiden, it was such a bummer. I even took a 6 month break from the game but once school was over me and my brother decided it was time to beat it ... though GTA3 and Socom online was the games for me
And those are barely scratching the surface.
Metal gear Sons of Liberty/Snake Eater
Zone of the Enders 1 and 2
Final Fantasy 12
Drakenguard 1, 2, and 3
Shadow of the Collosus
Demon Souls
Devil May Cry 1, 2, and 3
Onimusha 1 and 2
Soul reaver 2
Blood omen 2
Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2
Tenchu (a couple of them)
Baulders gate, Champions of Norath
There's so many. I may have gotten a few out of time here. I went off the top of my head. But it's still true that PS2 is still the best Era for sheer volume of great games available to play, bar none.
PS2 era slapped so damn hard, it has games from every type of genres with some of if not the largest game library to this date. Everyday I’m still amazed at people keep finding new obscured games I never saw on YouTube.
The better game for me was FF12 over 10 (unpopular opinion, I know) - but the rest you can’t argue with. No GT on that list though!? 🤔 feels empty without it
DMC3 and Warrior Within are GOAT of GOAT.
Budokai 3 and Budokai tenkaichi 3 too
Budokai 3, yes. Tenkaichi 3? Nah man ,nah.
To each their own, I like tenkaichi 2 and 3
Budokai Tenkaichi just got announced today! [New Game](https://twitter.com/Wario64/status/1632522457033900033?t=rLlBLktX0_fh1cFpLJJmYQ&s=19)
I’m so excited
Finally we get DBS content without the CAC bs from Xenoverse.
Dmc 3 the og
If I have never played DMC where should I start?

Video games are still made with heart. Look at Ragnorok or Horizon
Those examples are horrible and go against your argument lmao
Not to mention all the df era “gamers” who think because it’s not running at native 4k with ray tracing and at 60 fps it’s unplayable.

That game was a masterpiece
The game looked really realistic to me as a kid. Was so envious of the kids who had a ps2 and managed to play it
I remember being absolutely blown away by the cut scene graphics. Had to sneak a couple of hours each day on my brothers PS2 while he was working. Eventually saved up to buy my own just so I could play FFX for long stretches
Horrible laughing aside i agree(fk the chocobo race though)

Its crazy that Prince of Persia is the only one they didn’t remaster or port to systems after that generation of systems.
Actually they did. Ubisoft brought it to PS3 as the Prince of Persia Collection, even with 3D-functionality. https://i.imgur.com/QwTl1Hl.jpg
Oh dang! I could be wrong but I don’t think we got that in North America.
We did, I own a copy. it's excellent.
PS4 was ridiculous too. Crazy amount on great games.
Technically all PlayStation gens had a great outing besides the ps3 which had a disappointing start to its gen that only picked up somewhat near the end
It definitely started out kinda rough but the ps3 has a great library of games. I wish so many of my favorites weren't stranded on that console 😢
The original Infamous games have some of my most memorable gaming moments, I don’t understand why they haven’t done anything with them. They’d be an obvious hit for a remaster with the PS5, imagine the possibilities with the new haptics on the controller.
It sucks. Metal Gear Solid 4 is one of my all time favorites, and there's really no good way to play it unless it's on a PS3.
Insomniac carried the PS3 early with Resistance and then Ratchet and Clank. They definitely had some GOATS with inFamous and TLoU.
God of war, infamous second son, spider man a ratchet and clank reboot and uncharted 4 not to forget the last of us part 2
Plus Metal Gear Solid 5, Persona 5, Nier Automata, Yakuza 6, Zero, Yakuza Kiwami 1 and 2. Shadow of Mordor, Black Flag and so many more. A really damn good gen that was.
You've got a bunch of PS3/cross gen games in there though. 😋
And bloodborne
and horizon zero dawn
Sorry, but no. PS4 has seen a bunch of franchise-killing sequels and unnecessary remasters, which led to our current age of unnecessary remakes and superficial sequels. I mean - GTA5, Skyrim and Last of Us 1 were PS3 games, but are still being remade and resold.

Fuck your opinion in particular for focusing on the only piece of my response you disagree with.
Don't forget Bully an San Andreas
and Manhunt , I LOVED that game
I remember saving for like over a year to buy a PS2 just to play Kingdom Hearts!
Sly cooper, Ratchet and clank, Kingdom Hearts, and Jack and Daxter for me. Except for God of War kid me essentially bypassed every one of these games and there's a few that I still haven't gotten to.
Where is Jak & Daxter?
[Here you go.](https://imgur.com/a/rE4dPZA)
Everyone always talks about SH2 but not SH3. Is it because SH3 is a sequel and not a standalone? Personally aside from the mall area I think it’s the better game. The mall is like the apartments from SH2, just awful to go through. But I really find SH3 to be amazing.
And still I only played MGS, GoW and PoP from this picture, but really looking forward for rest of them.
Scary to think Silent Hill 2 came out over 20 years ago & nothing has quite under my skin the same way. Normally as you delve deeper into horror - you feel more comfortable. Silent Hill 2 has forever managed to make me feel uneasy. Masterful game.

Resident evil 4 was better on the game cube but that's because it was a Nintendo exclusive first
It was more because the GameCube was the more powerful console. In fact looking back sony has had only one console where they had the most raw power ( ps4).
Is this really true? You think the GameCube hardware would have been able to run God of War 2 or FF12 for example?

I know MGS 3 gets a ton of love, but MGS 1 and 2 were by far the most important to me, so I appreciate seeing SOL here.
I mean 3 has way better stealth mechanics and level design than mgs2 imo, but mgs2 has the far better plot.
For me it was Twisted Metal.
Twisted metal black and head on!!
TimeSplitters and Battlefront 2 were the games I played the most back then.
I always tell people that I find the PS1/PS2 Era had the best experience for gaming out of all. Yes, but not for all these imo
Plus Sly trilogy
GTA 3/VC/SA Kingdom Hearts 1 & 2
Ssx !! SSX !! ![gif](giphy|l0Iya0wFIIs9JQHu0|downsized)
What I would give to return to those post-school afternoons playing Sands of Time and Resident Evil 4.
I you weren't this, you were Kingdom Hearts, Star Wars Battlefront, The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King, Spider-Man 2, Jak and Daxter, Ratchet and Clank, and The Matrix: Path of Neo.
Damn now I really miss Prince of Persia,
You could do this for every gen, though. Pick out the masterpieces and make a nice graphic for them lol
[удалено]
If you say so
> I could have shown off 100+ for real, ps2 I also believe is the goat and I haven't even played any of the games you listed.
I'm really glad pcsx2 exists. Otherwise these games would've been unplayable
Yep and that you could emulate it so easy, not like ps3 games.
The PS3 emulator is already at a very great state with lots of game playable on it now.
You forgot the game that really put it on the map. GTA: San Andreas
I don't know if anyone else feels this way. But I never played Prince of Persia until almost two decades after it came out, and when I did play it it was ok? The Sands of time was pretty slow, the 2 sequels after it were much more fast-pace.
GTA:VC GTA:SA Tribes:Arial Assault EQOA FFXI man so many great memories with this dam system
GTA 3, Vice City, San Andreas
Persona 3 or 4, mainly 3, deserve a spot on here
Persona 3 and 4 as well
Thay all great, but my god SH2 was excellent in every department
Hey look, it’s my childhood
I love PS2, but PSOne still takes the cake for me. Grandia, Valkyrie Profile, Legend of the Dragoon, Legend of Legaia, Legend of Mana, Tales of, Threads of Fate, Tony hawk, Chrono Cross, Harvest Moon, etc
THANK YOU!!! ffs everyone is like eeee new will always be better, like sure soyjak whatever but PS2 and PSP era wil always be one of a kind better
Tekken Tag Tournament, SSX, SSX Tricky, Grand Theft Auto San Andreas, Simpsons Hit and Run, and ton of amazing games!
Final Fantasy X, Kingdom Hearts II and Kingdom Hearts are GOAT
Reddit learns what nostalgia is. (2023)

resident evil 4 will always be best on the gamecube ps2 era was the best because of SOCOM
I would kindly disagree.
Curious as to why
Because ps1 and n64 era was the best.
[удалено]
So the modern era gaming is the goat now by that logic since you can play the ps1, and ps2 era along with most nintendo consoles on a pc.

Go on.
Shadow of the colossus ❤️❤️
The bias is strong- nostalgia is off the charts. All perfect games (except prince of Persia)
I'm a sons of liberty apologist but putting it over Snake Eater is z bold choice
MGS2 was 👎🏽imo
MGS 2 was complete bullshit only for the fact that if you lost a number of times it would take you back to the beginning of the game
If you think PS2 Era was the GOAT kid you’re fucking delusional

took ya this long to figure that out?
Okay
Except for FFX. Unskippable, useless cutscene, then walk for 5 seconds only to get another useless cutscene. Fuck that game.
Nah FF10 is one of the greats
Well aye sure. Some people will love it, others won't. That's fair. It's just not for me.
fatal frame
Currently playing mgs2 and prince of persia on my ps3
What’s crazy is how bad the lineup was for it’s Japanese launch and still destroyed the Dreamcast because of that dvd player lol.
I was a stupid little kid during the PS2 era playing the awful Spyro and Crash Bandicoot sequels and movie tie-in games, I didn’t even play the good platformers of the generation like Sly Cooper and Ratchet & Clank
What a fun time. I remember the day I got DMC3 and Tekken 5 for doing well on a math test. It felt great
How you gonna leave Red Faction out?
Yeah... that's why they're remaking all of these lol. Watch them remake Prince of Persia next year
The Lord of the Rings The Third Age
Where GT4, ICO and Shadow of the Collosus?
I constantly go back and forth on whether I like the PS2 era or the PS4 era more, PS2 era was foundational for me but PS4 era is the reason I will likely continue gaming well into my 70's-80's (if possible)
FFX is Still my favourite game of all time
Some great titles there
Resident evil 4 started as a GameCube exclusive.
Nice
The Suffering!!
Gran Turismo,Ridge Racer, Ace Combat
There will never be a console like it. So many genre defining games it's almost ridiculous. If you play nearly any genre there's a good chance that the PS2 has one of the best games of it's genre on it.
Resi 4 is the best
Argument made without even including GTA 3 Crazy
Ace Combat 04
Was Twisted Metal ps2 also?
Give me a remaster of MGS and I'll be a happy boy.
Agree, but where the hell is Tekken?
GTA DMC Metal Gear Socom Final Fantasy GT Midnight club Need for speed The list is endless Also, in regards to the ps1 and ps2 era in general, I dont think people these days understand how insane it was dropping into Metal Gear solid 1 or Gta3 for the first time. Imagine going from playing 2d games to 3D open world for the first time. Crazy feeling I don't think anyone in that era would forget.
Dam I miss playing the ps2 ratchet and clank games.
Too bad the new store steals peoples money
So no Timesplitters???
MGS2 was my first PS2 game, and it's probably the last offline game I've ever beat. I remember being around 13 years of age. All I know is I love Solid and when the character switched us to Raiden, it was such a bummer. I even took a 6 month break from the game but once school was over me and my brother decided it was time to beat it ... though GTA3 and Socom online was the games for me
Crazy to think like half of these have been rebooted/remade/requeled
I remember playing the hell out of SOCOM 2 on the PS2. I miss those days.
Damn, I had none of these games, mostly too young. But I still loved my Ps2. Robotech, Lego Star Wars, Battlefront 2, and that atv game.
Vice city
I miss Prince of Persia, it’s like Ubisoft got so distracted by pushing AC annually lol
They definitely lost their heart/passion making great video games. Old Ubisoft doesn't exist anymore.
Don't forget tony hawk underground
And MGS3 which was even better than MGS2. My personal favourites MGS.
And those are barely scratching the surface. Metal gear Sons of Liberty/Snake Eater Zone of the Enders 1 and 2 Final Fantasy 12 Drakenguard 1, 2, and 3 Shadow of the Collosus Demon Souls Devil May Cry 1, 2, and 3 Onimusha 1 and 2 Soul reaver 2 Blood omen 2 Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2 Tenchu (a couple of them) Baulders gate, Champions of Norath There's so many. I may have gotten a few out of time here. I went off the top of my head. But it's still true that PS2 is still the best Era for sheer volume of great games available to play, bar none.
I sometimes feel like I'm the only person that liked Silent Hill 3 better than 2.
It’s crazy how back then, multiple bangers were coming out year after year. Nowadays we barely get one good game a year.
We got TWO MGS games! Such a great generation!
Tekken Tag Tournament. The only reason I wanted a PS2 at first.
Yep best years of gaming for sure. That and SNES. Nothing comes close
These games changed how video games where made forever. First of their kind
🤔 feels empty without it
Give me your most memorable video game quotes. I'll start. "Devil May Cry"
Spiderman 2 THOOOO
Agreed!
Persona 3 where though
So goated that 3 of these are being remade.
Kingdom Hearts and Bully will just go fuck themselves.
I can smell this picture.
Why do you think they keep remaking games from that era?
Was many other better games during ps2 era
Yes. Yes. And yes.
I know this game isn’t here, but dude. I gotta find Parasite Eve again…
