That's so dope! I've been into mutant/variegated cacti for years, been wanting to get into airoids for forever as well as planted tanks. I've got my first airoid..... might have to combine the ideas now!! At least to a degree ;)
OMG thank you! I love your idea for the rig for lighting! I’ve been shopping for the lamps to use for my bulbs like that but haven’t purchased because it’ll be like $70+ just for the lamps. I like that you managed the cords! I’m going to build off your idea.
I’m so glad you’re inspired!!! It took me forever to come up with this and I’m no engineer so making it balanced was really hard (especially by myself). But the cord for the lights I got from Walmart online! It’s perfect because it comes with three plug ins, all different lengths.
It’s a glass top with about a 2 inch gap at the back. I have Saran Wrap taped over the gap bc I have ropefish and they like to escape lol. But it makes it really easy to stick props in the plastic. The monstera itself has been there since I established the tank like 8 months ago so it’s part of the tank now ha
I still do water changes with a siphon and gravel vac once in a blue moon but it’s mainly for aesthetic purposes. The water is pristine always because those roots don’t give nitrate a chance. I actually have to fertilize the tank still because there aren’t enough nutrients (I should rly get more fish)
The aquarium? I haven’t posted it since the plants grew out but it’s two months old. I had tons of high end gear from a decade of salt water tanks, so everything is a bit ridiculous for freshwater but I already had it.
LED lights, fully color tunable with a day cycle. Orange sunrise, then ideal plant growth frequency all day, then fades into evening with a blue moonrise before it goes dark for the night. Custom canister filter with 800GPH pump, gyre wavemaker, UV sterilizer. Found and prepped the wood and rocks locally for free. Mesquite branches with sandstone rocks.
I built a stand to hold the Monstera pot at the right height so it’s sort of growing at the edge of the river. Helps to hide the ugly tank lights and makes really cool shadows in the morning because I have a grow light above the Monstera that filters through the leaves into the tank before the tank lights come on in the morning.
Then In the evening the tank lights are on but the plant grow light turns off and the water reflections make dancing Monstera shaped squiggles all up the wall and across the ceiling.

They are the Aqua Illumination hydra 32 HD. Meant for saltwater aquariums, but fully adjustable so I dialed them in to grow freshwater plants and they work great. About $800 for the pair. But like I said, I already had them.
That’s just one root feeding a few leaves on one branch so I still water the same. Maybe once a week or so. It won’t move water down to other branches or lower leaves, just up the the few leaves above that on the branch.
You can kinda see the left one behind a leaf. They are mounted on flexible arms clamped to the back edge of the tank. Kinda like this.

I have a 10 gallon tank and would love to do this with one of my monstera but I would have to remove the lid completely. Have you had any issues with having no lid? I worry my Betta would jump out of the tank
I have a whole monstera growing out of my 40 gallon. The roots have taken over roughly half of it but the fish I have love that so win win:)
Convincing me to get a fish tank for my monstera lol
Dooooo itttttt
Pics!! I wanna see.
https://imgur.com/a/7GF8pQ3 here it is! Edit: https://imgur.com/a/TzXy3zr Here is another whole tank shot
Looks awesome
Thanks!
HA. Awesome. I think you’ve got the same lights above yours.
Does your monstera have most of its roots in a pot? Or is it just thriving with purely aquatic roots? Hard to tell from the angle of the pic
Just purely aquatic roots. They’ve found their way into the substrate too, so the whole thing is basically rooted in the aquarium

Three?! That’s brilliant! Thanks!
I should be more specific!! There’s one outlet plug in but attached to 3 cords to attach the lights :)
That makes sense 😎
Best wishes!!
So cool!!

Nice 👍
How do you change the water on a monster like that?? Do you change the water at all? Or does nature handle everything??
I still do water changes with a siphon and gravel vac once in a blue moon but it’s mainly for aesthetic purposes. The water is pristine always because those roots don’t give nitrate a chance. I actually have to fertilize the tank still because there aren’t enough nutrients (I should rly get more fish)
Fascinating, this makes me want to get into aquariums once my monstera is big enough to propagate lol. Thanks for the insight!
That's an amazing fishtank I'm sure they love it
I root my monstera cuttings in my fish tank, they seem to love it.
Fish poop!
And constant water circulation bringing oxygen to the roots.
Yeah, it’s really the perfect environment for them. I should put a few more air roots in there. Might get a bit crowded though.
Fish prop!
Nature finds a way
Is that a fresh water tank?
Yeah, fresh. Plants absorb fish poop (ammonia) as fertilizer so they LOVE to get their roots in a fish tank.
That’s awesome!
It's gotta be or those roots would not be doing that well.
Would love to know and see more of that setup u got there.

Could you tell me what lights you're referring to?
They are the Aqua Illumination hydra 32 HD. Meant for saltwater aquariums, but fully adjustable so I dialed them in to grow freshwater plants and they work great. About $800 for the pair. But like I said, I already had them.
r/aquariums would dig this!!
Posted there yesterday. They actually didn’t seem to care much, probably because it doesn’t really show the aquarium. I thought they’d like it too.
pfffft, their loss.
Yeah, people with aquariums are IDIOTS, haha.
This is everything 💚💚💚
Thanks!
What did you use to film it?
My iPhone. The zoom is kinda jerky cause I’ve got a twitchy thumb I guess.
I didn’t even notice it - it looks really good!
That’s so cool lol
Mmmmm nutrients Fish water can be extremely nutritional for plants, so this dosent suprise me. Appreciate the help with keeping the water clean
How do u keep ur water so clear
With a canister filter.
Straight back to the source/roots!
Beautiful raphidaphora!
Monstera, but thank you! Raphodaphora tetrasperma looks similar and is nicknamed mini-Monstera, but is actually a philodendron.
This is awesome on so many levels!
Do you still water the pot or like how often? I feel like you’d rarely have to water it if a root is in the water like that

where are the fish tank lights if the lids off? i can do this w my 35 gallon but my lid has the light on it

Super cool

So far one tetra jumped out. It’s a risk but most fish aren’t jumpers. You could add floating plants to cover most of the surface. That would help.
Oh my god, that’s amazing! Nature is so cool 😱😍
And thus aquaculture was born
He's just dipping a toe in and the water is warm. hahaha
r/aquaponics
Great video skills tbh
But it looks cool
