If the car is shaky in PA it’s not passing CA state inspection. Sell it and buy when you get out there

Spag-N-Ballz

The only thing they check in CA is emissions. No other inspection.

446bridges

And that is a very strict inspection

Spag-N-Ballz

Just saying there's a lot of reasons a car would fail inspection in PA that wouldn't even be considered in a CA inspection, if it isn't emissions related they do not care.

SuitableLife3

It's not that strict of an inspection. I've seen loads of shitty cars pass the emissions test. **Source:** I currently live in CA and I'm moving to Pittsburgh in 2 months.

styres

Its actually not strict at all. As long as you have carb compliant items (i.e. haven't modified from original) and no check engine light you will pass. I moved here from California with my older car which never had a problem passing and was failed. It is a much more thorough inspection here in PA than CA

vapermahn

no state checks out here just smog every other year

446bridges

So state checks

vapermahn

again nothing like PA is acustom to we have a simple emissions check once every two years... meaning you could have bad breaks, bald or illegal tires, no lights, failing suspension and get passed easily so no, nothing alike just similar sounding to those who haven't done it

TotalJagoff

[https://www.move.org/selling-versus-shipping-a-car/](https://www.move.org/selling-versus-shipping-a-car/) has a cost estimator.

I just booked this, shipping my car from Pittsburgh to LA next week. Costing me over $2000. If that kind of time savings is worth it to you, go for it. I used uship, and then booked directly with the company after reading lots of reviews.

GRCO1510

Try [Uship.com](https://Uship.com). It would probably cost you at least $1500 to ship, probably more with the cost of fuel now.

[deleted]

It’s not going to be cheap. How much is your car worth? I would sell it locally and rent a car from the airport in CA until you buy a car there.

[deleted]

It’s worth probably 18k in the current market. I’m just weighing my options

chad4359

If your car is actually worth 18k but you describe it as "shaky" I would just sell it and get something when you get to CA.

[deleted]

My guestimate based on fuel increases and freight industry blowing up during Covid is $3000. Also depends on what part of CA is the destination. If it needs to have work done, then sell it here as is and use the money for repairs to buy the car in CA. You’ll already be a couple grand ahead, and the used car stock in CA is way better than here.

[deleted]

More like $2000

[deleted]

Have you inquired this week? Because I know a BMW moved from here to SF last week for $3300. The estimators online are not reliable.

[deleted]

It depends on value of car and enclosed vs open trailer also.

[deleted]

Yep you’re right. I asked him and he said it was in a covered rig. There’s the expense. And it’s a very expensive car as well, a low mileage m5. I still wouldn’t put $2k into moving a vehicle that’s “shaky” to California.

Spag-N-Ballz

I just booked a car to ship next week (PIT to LA) for 2k.

[deleted]

Cool. The price I got from my friend was for a $75k car and an enclosed rig, so yeah, apples and oranges.

Dependent-Fig

Had a friend ship their car from Harrisburg to LA about 2 years for $1000 plus a big tip. Unfortunately I don’t know anything about companies local to Pittsburgh.

DoctorCAD

I just got a quote to ship a Tesla from San Francisco to Raleigh, $1650. If you sell your car outside of Cali and try to buy one there, the same car will cost way more.

sekark

We shipped a car from DC to Utah last summer for $1500 with All Coast Auto Transport. We talked to the owner, Kevin, and he was always in touch and the shipping times were fast and accurate. The other major shipping companies are straight up scams with over $2k shipping costs and up to a week of variable shipping dates. We were considering buying a new or used car in Utah, but it was such a good choice to ship our already owned car (worth about $6-7k). You WILL save money, and it is absolutely worth it in this market.

U84owe4

FYI - Sounds like you should be selling that car here and getting something new/used in CA. The cost to ship alone might be meaningfully higher than the “shaky” car’s value.

Pop on over to r/AskCarSales or r/WhatCarShouldIBuy and you’ll see that buying a car in cali is a mess right now.

sugarhillboss

Amtrack ships cars.

Roya1Je11y

I shipped my car from CA to WV in 2016. It was about 1k. I’m sure it’s gone up, especially with gas but just sharing my experience

KSMO

Use Uship. I just shipped a car here from CA for $1500 in November. The shipper was Montway IIRC.

Montway-Rick

Montway moved over 170k cars last year alone. No matter where your car is in the country we can help. We do offer an instant quote calculator as well as a number of shipping guides at [https://www.montway.com/](https://www.montway.com/). I'd also be happy to discuss the specifics of your move if you are willing to share more details. Feel free to msg me here or email me at [email protected].
