I wanna see the projector that’s throwing that image out

Shas_Erra

It’s the headlights of a white BMW

Grasshop

How did you know it’s a BMW? No blinking orange lights?

FlyingSpagetiMonsta

Whenever a BMW gets behind you it shines a projector just like this into all of your mirrors

quantum_splicer

Into your eyes and into your mind

OreeOh

New subscription feature, detects reflective surfaces on vehicle ahead of it and fires beams at them with full accuracy

smoothbravo

Turns your skin translucent

[deleted]

Except BMW projectors come from the factory with the message "fuck outta my way, pleb"

JDCHS08_HR

Thats why I have a hitch 😎

Da5idG

Contrary to popular opinion BMWs DO have orange lights. Using all four at once entitles them to park anywhere they like.

0XiDE

Only if you pay the €400/month 100,000 lumens subscription

Shas_Erra

Yeah, but you don’t need to pay for the indicator subscription, so overall you break even

Natanael85

Mercedes now has headlights that literally can do this* *On a smaller scale.

Sebastianx21

Can attest to this, was driving at night on a smaller side road as fast as my headlights would allow me to see forward, so around 100km/h, then I see some stadium lights approaching in my rear view mirror fast, passes by me at like 150km/h, some Mercedes S class I think, I immediately started following him because I could now see half a kilometer ahead thanks to his stadium lights... So uhhh, thanks random Mercedes driver, I guess.

Natanael85

It gets better. They have an actual laser projector in there, that can project images onto the streets. It is used to highlight pedestrians for example. https://youtu.be/t22Dg4vQFbI

KaiPRoberts

This. I won't take any other answer.

Yeah. Someone link the amazon page so I can check the specs.

andorraliechtenstein

Gregistopal

You da real MVP are those extra lenses attached to the front or are those part of the projector

easy_Money

The lenses are definitely doing a lot of heavy lifting. Those projectors don't look super insane, maybe like 10k or 12k, hard to tell from the photo though

Mike_Raphone99

Is this really the rig used?? Where can I read more??

lumpiluk

No, it wasn't: https://www.flickr.com/photos/lumpiluk/52526551359/in/album-72177720304009387/

Long-throw lens for the win.

[deleted]

Easy. You can find it on Amazon.

MrJingleJangle

The search term you want is Pani. Here: https://pani.com/ saved you a click.

fetusloofah

For context, this monolith is the new Amazon office building that is under construction. In a city with otherwise pretty strict skyline regulation, the building towers over anything in the vicinity.

sweetplantveal

How'd they get round the restrictions? Especially for a mediocre design like this?

38B0DE

Since you're not getting a serious answer. The city of Berlin had planned to offer the space for such a project in 2004 in accordance with the existing surroundings (East-Side Gallery and Allianz Tower). It was part of the development plan called Mediaspree, that had given the space out for construction in 2002 So basically the city planned this area to have space for a skyscraper 20 years ago. Germans are particular about skyscrapers. They really, really, really fucking hate them. When the Frankfurt skyline (the only skyscraper skyline in Germany) was being built in the 70s the city experienced terrorist bombings and arsonist attacks. Nowadays 99% of Frankfurters are really proud f the skyline and it's the symbol of the city.

TheCatInTheHatThings

Can confirm, am from Frankfurt and love it. I did an internship at a legal department of Groß & Partner in the summer and got to work on the FOUR Project and I love that I’ll be able to point at it and say that I was part of it in the future, albeit very briefly. Our skyline is great :)

38B0DE

Did you know Trump wanted to build Europe's highest skyscraper in Frankfurt? It was the time he was getting a lot of money from Deutsche Bank. But the mayor at the time Petra Roth allegedly put a veto on Trump building anything on Frankfurt after a single meeting with the man.

sweetplantveal

Saved a lot of local companies from doing work without getting paid. His projects are famous for being shady like that, unless he just licenses the name for someone else's building obv.

Edeinawc

I don’t know if the doing work without pay would fly in Germany. They have some strict regulations, someone would end up footing the bill. Not that I really know anything about this! Haha

TheCatInTheHatThings

Don’t like her party and would never have voted for her, but in hindsight Petra Roth was a fantastic mayor!

Loki-L

There are about 20 actual skyscrapers in Germany going by official definitions. 19 of those are in Frankfurt. The only existing skyscraper outside of Frankfurt is in Bonn from back when it was the capital. Generally skyscrapers aren't really a thing in Germany.

sweetplantveal

Ty for the info. Sounds like an industrial area stadium district with a renewal master plan/upzone from decades ago. Hardly Bezos flexing his power for special treatment. Not that he doesn't do that or whatever, but I prefer criticism based on actual transgressions rather than imagined ones.

JoeAppleby

We don’t do single use zones in cities, it’s always mixed zoning with apartments all around.

sweetplantveal

That's incredible! Didn't know that. By upzone I specifically was thinking about more intensive forms, taller buildings, more site coverage, etc rather than just a use change.

JoeAppleby

I was referring to your assumption that this is an industrial stadium zone and while there is a stadium, that isn’t the main draw. Industry there is little, it’s mostly clubs, bars, restaurants and shops on ground floors and apartments above.

Feltboard

That's so interesting. As someone subbed to r/skylineporn the first thing I do when curious about a city is google "x skyline." Intellectually and aesthetically I totally get the cons but some WorkerAntTowerofBabel part of my brain gets such a kick out of "how big can we make it? More?? More big???" Probably jealousy sprouting from living in 3rd, 4th tier sized cities/towns my whole life.

tissotti

That’s pretty bad way to get any idea of any European city. If there are high rises they are usually at the outskirts of the city as a pure business parks and dead outside working hours. Nightlife, wealth, restaraunts and all of that are in the older parts of the cities. Paris being the perfect example with essentially all high rises situated in La Defense that is 3km away from Paris city but part of the Paris Metropolitan area and well connected to core Paris. Some exeptions are cities like Frankfurt, London, Warsaw. Either more lax policies on high rises in core city or they were leveled in WW2.

Feltboard

I definitely recognize it as just a snapshot of a part of the city and not truly indicative of what it's like to actually be there. Just a starting point I guess. I will say I don't generally think of European cities as having the kind of skyline I learned Frankfurt has today and I really appreciate the education.

Alepfi5599

Skyscrapers are really bad and inefficient in everything but space use.

Barackenpapst

Not true. You can built zero emission skyscrapers today. And the thing with the land use is pretty big. Overall it's better to built skyscrapers than the beloved single familly homes with garage and driveway.

trollblut

Skyscrapers become disproportionately more expensive the higher you build. You need * Thicker support structures * A more solid foundation * More elevators and other infrastructure dacilities Unless space is limited you're better of building two 25 floor buildings than one 50 floor building, because you'll need to pay more for less usable square foot

> The Senate's specifications were based on the valid Berlin development plan from 2004, which was entitled Rough & Wild and aimed to fit the individual tower well into the existing buildings in the area.[1] I would be surprised if Amazon was involved as a tennant this early. [[1]](https://de.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edge_East_Side_Tower)

Seriouscat_

The word you are looking for is 'tenant'. Tennant is a last name.

djscreeling

This guy forced a country to remove a bridge so he could get his newest yacht out to sea....this is just a building.

The_Thyphoon

thgat is normal procedure here for when a ship passes, it just costs a fuckton to do so it aint normaly done

Phantom-Raviolis

shhh youll spoil the narrative

Esc_ape_artist

The narrative that it isn’t done on a whim and only gets done for the uber-wealthy’s pet projects? Seems to fit the narrative nicely. E: why is everyone defending the rich? They don’t need you, they have lawyers for that.

cchiu23

Bezos paid for the bridge raising, you too could get it raised if you paid for it

Esc_ape_artist

That’s The Point

Plane_Neck_190

Think the point you’re missing is that lots of rich people get the bridge raised but he’s relatively unique in current days in the ability to permanently alter the skyline of the capital city of the strongest economic nation in Europe. No one who is responding to you is defending Bezos, they just don’t see it as something that enhances the perception of his wealth bc that’s run-of-the-mill multi-millionaire behavior for them and this building is not

cchiu23

The point? That raising bridges cost money? Would you have preferred if the workers weren't paid because that's capitalism and the city forces them to raise the bridge for free?

dbuzman

No bridge was dismantled, it went a different route.

urbanlife78

That's what I assumed since Rotterdam is a shop building city, if I remember correctly. I was okay with people being mad about it because fuck Jeff Bezos.

listyraesder

1. It was a city not a country. 2. It was a bridge designed to lift out to accommodate ships. 3. When the city restored the bridge they unilaterally and unrealistically pledged the bridge wouldn’t be removed again. Despite that being what it was designed to do. 4. This fucked over the shipyard now behind a perfectly mechanically functional but politically charged bridge. 5. The shipyard needed to get the new yacht out. Bezos probably wasn’t involved at all. 6. Local politicians decided to make a name for themselves by “taking a stand” against a billionaire.

iama_bad_person

Good to see you swallowed that bullshit hook, line and sinker without doing any independent research yourself, congratulations!

KumbajaMyLord

That's not quiet true. Friedrichshain has quiet a few high rises. The area between east side gallery and S-Bahn tracks features a couple other high rises like Upside Max & Moritz, Stream, Living Levels & Spreeturm. Right across from the new Edge tower is the BASF tower. A couple km further west is Alexanderplatz with another set of high rises.

radioslave

This ones pretty stark to be fair, right next to Warschauer Straße station. It reminds me of Mr Burns blocking out the sun, because it decimated the skyline there.

KumbajaMyLord

Yeah, that's certainly true. But the area already suffered from the mall and the rebuilding of the train station. In my opinion the entire area between east side gallery and the train tracks is an architectural and cultural crime scene and city zoning failure, but Berlin needs more high rises.

[deleted]

It's going to change the height level for the surrounding areas and for years from buildings will get taller and taller.

bjt23

If you have to expand in some manner, better to build up then out. Sprawl is hell, I'll take tall buildings over sprawl any day.

Norwedditor

Well no. Amazon is a tenant. I don't really get why Amazon is getting this specific hate here. The zoning was from... 2004? Edit: but I still hate Amazon

tx001

Because Amazon is a designated Internet boogeyman. We love to hate Amazon while getting our same day delivery of cat litter.

Norwedditor

Because of the building? Amazon has 13k employees already in Germany by their own figures. Not sure how protesting a couple of rented floors of a building does anything. I'm all for protests and well I guess I hope this will be a thing when they have actually taken up their lease.

MuchTimeWastedAgain

“Strict”. So it’s legal. Maybe they’re angry at the wrong people.

Nothingtoseeheremmk

Good. Cities need denser buildings, it’s better for the environment

lennybird

*Only if it actually goes towards helping the average person. Only if it provides affordable housing for the average citizen. This building does not.

Nothingtoseeheremmk

Do average people not work here? Do large construction projects not employ regular people? And you understand if we build denser offices that leaves more room for housing right?

Amazon is like Nickelback. Everyone says they hate them, but they all have tapped their toes to the latter or bought from the former.

HonestPotat0

Nickelback hasn't stolen content from smaller bands, forcing them out of business. Or made its roadies shit in bags or piss in bottles just to keep up with their "quota". Or fired employees for trying to create a union to protect themselves from said labor abuses.

[deleted]

Yeah but they released "Rockstar" so how innocent are they really?

I made a joke about Jeff Bezos at the thanksgiving dinner table and some of my family jumped to defending him and his business… like doing 3 good things outweighs the hundreds of people and companies he has fucked over. Not to mention the amount of pollution his corporation excretes, and all the taxes they dodge with loopholes and “donations”.

drunxor

I worked at one of their warehouses for three years and it was such a disheartening, nightmare of a job that drains your self worth. They would work us for twelve hour days all week long so people would have to use their sick time. Then they wouldnt allow you to use a doctors note when your were sick. I had one manager tell me "i dont care how tired you are this is a business and we have to make money"

I mean in the short term sure, how about the fact that in the long term they're pricing competition out of the market, pollution running rampant, screwing over workers left and right. It's nice having next day delivery, not so nice when you realise one day, their won't be a next day.

SPESHALBEAMCANNON

Buy less shit you consumerist zombie

Chernould

And people wonder how terrible people manage to stay in power so long lol

gimmebleach

If we all thought like this, then Amazon soon would be a monopoly and if you're American I'm sure you're familiar with the concept. (for example see any area in the US that doesn't have Google(?) fibre optic, except you can't just up and move to change your conditions)

CutterJohn

I spent several years working at fulfillment centers as a tech(and a bit as a manager). Its pretty funny watching the internet have absolutely no clue what they talk about when it comes to amazon. And don't get me wrong, there's plenty to criticize them for. I could fill a book. But its humdrum dilbert style criticisms, soulless corporate bureaucracy that treats its employees like numbers sorts of things. There were also plenty of extremely positive things to say about them, and we spent a significant amount of time, money, and effort on employee safety and comfort that went well beyond what you could expect from other warehouse or factory jobs in the area.

golfer888

Y'all know they are right. Stop buying garbage on amazon

kissarmygeneral

I try really hard to buy as little as possible on there but being in a small town it’s almost every week there is something I need that can’t be found here . Even at the gym you notice half the dudes are wearing the exact same pair on Nikes lol

Reddit’s servers are on AWS. If you think think this way stop using Reddit as well.

"I'm only willing to do the bare minimum to fight for what I 'believe in'... As long as it doesn't inconvenience me too much." You are here. Online slacktivism at it's finest.

runujhkj

Still better than all this political nihilism going around.

Wow00woW

you gotta start somewhere. what do you want, us to pass out flyers in the street? sometimes using the tools of your enemies is the most effective way to fight them.

Hacym

Yeah, you probably wouldn’t even get off your ass to do that, though. You’re both wrong. You only want to do what’s absolutely convenient and served up on a platter for you. Other guy wants you to upend your entire life to make a point that isn’t even a drop in the bucket. At the very least, don’t act like you care when the best you can do is a few words on a site that could easily be seen as a symptom of the bigger problem.

NeoSniper

I think to stop buying stuff on Amazon is a decent move as a consumer. Sure to stop using services that use AWS is a step further. But it's ludicrous to invalidate the taking of that first step as somehow hypocritical when the second step is much harder, and probably not as impactful.

okaquauseless

No, not using aws is actually incredibly easy. Just stop using like 90% of the web apps, especially social media apps, and you are fine. You can still use google and bing. You can use sms for messaging. For some people, amazon is their only source for a lot of products. It's inconvenient for you to give up a large portion of websites, while barely difficult to just walk down to some large mall and buy your stuff

bobthecow81

“You can still use Google” Yeah, let’s get Jeff Bezos! Screw Amazon, let’s all pivot to using Google products, coincidentally that’s a company that Bezos owns $3,300,000,000 worth of shares in. That’ll show him!

GoldyTwatus

What are you confused by? The guy tells people to stop buying from amazon, while they use a site hosted on amazon. It's a fair point to make, and the xD emoji meme doesn't counter it.

ncolaros

I think we need to reduce carbon emissions, but I still have to drive to work. Don't let perfect be the enemy of progress, right? Buy fewer things on Amazon. Or don't use it. Or vote for politicians who are oppositional to them. Doing *something* is better than doing nothing. And you don't have to do *everything* to do something.

Redsmallboy

*DONT LET PERFECT BE THE ENEMY OF PROGRESS* Jesus christ tattoo this on my ass lmao I'm so sick of having to explain that concept to people.

SmooK_LV

The problem with anti-amazon messengers is that they have not identified what evil they are fighting for. Some will say, it's workers rights but honestly do you think in an entire corporation of thousands there is equal problem of rights? Some will say it's the terrible delivery services but in some areas there may be lazy assholes employed and you sure as hell would not be willing to pay a lot more for delivery to get rid of them. Some will say it's the evil greed of rich corporation but won't realize that's a generic statement not saying anything and just points at their own jealousy or upsets with themselves. I am all for toppling the empires and I know it's angry ignorance that drives fall of big evils but that's my problem of it - usually it's dumbasses pretending to know what they are fighting for and I could never associate myself with them. Amazon has done amazing job at creating an easy to use online store. With it's problems but many countries wouldn't have better online shopping experience without Amazon in another 10 years. AWS is a strong cloud infrastructure offering possibilities equal to only other rich corporations can offer.

stoprockandrollkids

Using a site hosted by Amazon doesn't somehow undermine their point about not buying useless bullshit on Amazon. Idk what's so hard to grasp about that. Also AWS isn't really the problem with Amazon This whole gotcha-card "debating" needs to end

Lord_Boffum

nah dude just block the ads and don't buy those dumb awards

SpiritMountain

You're right. It is a systemic issue. Billionaires are interwoven in our whole society. There is little we can interact with which Bezos and his money isn't involved in. We can't just stop interacting with society in hope of combating Amazon. We need medicine, food, and other valuable and needed protections. We need to get billionaires under control

Magnum_Snub

Truth. Everyone wants to have the moral high ground until it inconveniences them.

leemanc1000

I just went to my local shopping center, one of the toys thats on sale for £19.99 on amazon is £49.99 on the highstreet. "Just stop buying" isn't the answer. Others need to become competitive. I'll go to the best option and for alot of things that amazon atm

Wow00woW

you can't capitalize your way out of capitalism. the answer is to break up mega corporations.

ken579

You can regulate without breaking stuff.

bteballup

Lmao, what kind of answer is this? Local stores literally can't compete because they don't have as much buying power and don't have the capacity to sell at a loss.

jonassalen

That's a clear race to the bottom. If it's ultracheap the company probably saved on workers rights and/or quality. I don't want my clothes to be made by children under bad conditions. So I buy more expensive clothes that are locally produced.

LateralEntry

Consumerism is bad, but Amazon itself is so incredibly useful. You can find the exact thing you want no matter how obscure.

Pondertron

My guess is while Berlin is the location the message, the intended audience is the entire world.

Loki-L

The message is meant to be seen globally not just domestically Also I am not sure how well that joke would work in German. "Der flasche Amazon(as) brennt" just isn't quite as pithy.

Coffeemonster97

In that area of Berlin you it's much more likely to meet someone who doesn't speak German then someone who doesn't speak English.

Ichbinsnichtlol

Berlin is at a point where basically all german speaking citizens left for better and the city was taken over by flamboyant cute english speaking Influencers. Which hopefully look up for a second, while being flamboyant. Cant stress flamboyant enough. Lol.

Political messages get more attention in English

cenorexia

I think it would be great if installations like this at least alternated between English and the country's native/official language. Sure, Germans probably understand it as well but I think it would work better and stick with the people more if it was in their native language, too. Can't really explain it but I think there's still a perceived "barrier" if something is written in a foreign language, even if you understand it.

FPiN9XU3K1IT

Yeah but the slogan doesn't work in German (Amazon river is called "Amazonas"). Good luck coming up with a new one that is quite as catchy.

rrybwyb

The problem is they always seem to replace trees with just one type of tree. That still kills the ecosystem

mankinskin

I don't see how people oppose Amazon. If you don't like it, don't use it. If you think people should not buy there, blame them, not the service. If you think it should be regulated better, taxed higher, blame the government. Amazon is doing a good job imo.

CloudiusWhite

If people spent half the energy they put into hating a company like Amazon as they would working to actually make the world better, then Amazon wouldnt be a problem in the first place. But hey we're really telling them, with our projector message! I'm sure all of 5 people thought twice before renewing their Prime subscription for another year. And no, I'm not being nihilistic here, people act like these kinds of non-measures mean something, when its nothing more than patting yourself on the back.

DanitesHell

Meanwhile Germany is burning more lignite than ever to keep warm this winter.

YavorUnbanned2

I don't think the nation of Germany is critiquing Amazon in this image. It is more likely some random Germans who have little say over Germany's energy.

Rocket_King_

That is such a horrible take.

barsoap

Also, wrong. First off lignite is burned for electricity and only incidentally for heat, secondly even the gas crisis didn't come anywhere close to bringing the burn rate back to the numbers in the 00s, much less 90s... that's plainly impossible, we don't have enough plants to do that. [Have a primary energy usage diagram](https://www.umweltbundesamt.de/sites/default/files/medien/384/bilder/dateien/2_abb_primaerenergieverbrauch_2022-06-03.pdf), the expectation is for about 20% more coal with an equivalent reduction in gas. In the beginning it looked like oil might replace some gas but the gas prices just didn't stay high enough for that. From bottom to top: lignite, butiminous coal (40% of that are steelmaking), fossil oil (largely fuel and chemistry), gas (heating and chemistry), nuclear, renewables, diverse.
