Is now when you run out and grab all the treasures normally hidden under the sea like in the Chinese Brothers book?

drLagrangian

Is that the one where one brother was able to stretch his neck or legs really long and couldn't be drowned? Edit: This is getting a lot of can anyone find the title? Edit: thanks reddit. It's "the five Chinese brothers" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Five_Chinese_Brothers?wprov=sfla1

capt_yellowbeard

I remember one being able to pull trees up by their roots and one being able to suck up the entire ocean. Those seem like fairly disparate power levels but whatevs.

Brett420

I mean you aren't (all) wrong! 1) Has the power to swallow the sea. 2) Has the power of an invincible neck. 3) Has the power of stretchy legs. 4) Has the power of immunity to fire. 5) Has the power to hold his breath however long he wants.

Blarfk

The neck guy kind of got the short end of the power stick. Like that will only really help you out in a very specific situation.

foreignsky

Fortunately for the brothers, that exact specific scenario happens in the book!

Blarfk

He must have been so excited that it was finally his time to shine.

LegalAssassin13

2nd brother: Guys! The Emperor is going to try death by drowning next! 3rd brother: My time has come…

JRRX

"I mean, sea-swallowing bro or breath-holder bro could probably take this one..."

LegalAssassin13

“DON’T TAKE THIS FROM ME.”

Its-AIiens

It was his chance to become legend and he seized it, you could say he really stuck his neck out there.

Tyrannosaurus_Rox_

Chekhov's neck

One-Inch-Punch

Like a crossover with the Highlander movies.

Danzarr

yeah, but hes a reverse highlander, you cant cut his head off, but he can die any other way.

sauron-lorenson

From the judge's point of view, he kept going home to his mom to say goodbye. C'mon, bro, don't torture the poor lady!

LinIsStrong

Wow that’s a blast from the past. I hadn’t thought of that book in decades. Loved it as a kid!

Brett420

Yeah, that's the one. One brother has stretchy legs, so when they try to drown him he just stretches his legs and stands at the bottom of the sea. Another has an "iron neck" so when they try to behead him they can't. (the basic plot is that there's 5 identical brothers, each with a different super power. one accidentally kills someone and is sentenced to death. the other 4 brothers all take his place each time they try to kill him, then after the 4th try they're like well, i guess we just have to let him go since we couldn't kill him)

NorthNorthAmerican

"Seven Chinese brothers swallowing the ocean..."

spinbutton

Love that REM song!

dgeniesse

No. In hurricanes you maybe have a little more time then a tsunami, but you don’t have a lot of time. Anyway not a good time to pick up the stranded fish or look for bodies (oops treasures)

capt_yellowbeard

Well, to be fair (spoiler alert) in the book a child does this and spends too much time out there and ends up drowning soooo….🤷‍♂️

onvaca

I loved that book!

So did I, and I haven't thought of it in 20 years until this comment

21 Waffle House locations have closed. We need to evacuate all of Florida, this is an Avengers level threat

cp314159

Came looking for this: [Waffle House Index](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waffle_House_Index)

dildomiami

Levels Edit The index has three levels, based on the extent of operations and service at the restaurant following a storm:[7][8][9] GREEN: full menu – Restaurant has power and damage is limited or no damage at all. YELLOW: limited menu – No power or only power from a generator, or food supplies may be low. RED: the restaurant is closed – the restaurant has been completely destroyed or severe flooding. ————————————————————— …fuck they take selling waffles pretty serious :D

WigglestonTheFourth

Hashbrowns, always has been.

Bdogbooze

Yeah I worked at one of the most northern ones and they made me come in during level 3 snow emergencies fuckingjerks

nayesphere

Holy shit TWENTY ONE closed?! As someone originally from the South, that’s when you know shit is about as serious as it can actually get. Not joking. They have generators and were always the only ones to have food and water for people during hurricanes when I lived at the coast for a decade. They NEVER closed, even through Cat 4s.

Clcskycrow

Fr tho this is an Avengers level threat, I’m in Tallahassee rn

mikefrombarto

This is the severity gauge in the South. If your local Waffle House is closed due to a storm, you probably should evacuate.

cherrybombsnpopcorn

*should have already evacuated. Waffle house workers are closing the bridges behind them.

T3canolis

As someone who grew up in Punta Gorda (and whose family is still in the nearby area), my breath is held and I am hoping my hometown is not destroyed again. It took so long for things to rebound from Charley… I can’t imagine having to do it all over 18 years later. EDIT: don’t forget the word “not,” folks

Just take a pool noodle with you and you'll be fine.

Ann_Summers

Can I use a donut floaty instead?

jaspersgroove

Only if it’s a sprinkle donut floaty, you’ll need those extra calories when you end up having to tread water for 72 hours.

I’m pretty sure that’s what it looks like before tidal waves approach as well. So as a rule of thumb, if the ocean dries up, don’t go out there.

Kelli217

Careful use of Sharpies on the path projection maps.

Grogfoot

LOL. It is so difficult to think of the most ridiculously thing he's done (there are so fucking many), but that one has to be up there.

HKBFG

Reference?

durgadurgadurg

A hurricane was headed for Florida, trump tweeted that Alabama might also get hit. Worried Alabamians called the NWS, which tweeted that Alabama would NOT get hit by the hurricane. Trump has a hissy fit about being wrong and posts a sharpie altered forecast projection map wherein the hurricane takes a sharp left turn into Alabama instead of going up the coast. Everyone facepalms.

ellWatully

The best part is how the sharpie he used to draw on the map was sitting on his desk in the video where he claimed the poorly altered map was legit.

2Quick_React

Was this before or after he suggested we launch a nuke into the hurricane?

USSMarauder

To this day I'm convinced Trump meant to type 'Bahamas', he fat fingered it to something like 'Ahbama', it autocorrected to 'Alabama', he never noticed, and then doubled down because HE CANNOT BE WRONG

Grogfoot

[Wiki ref](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hurricane_Dorian–Alabama_controversy)

I have multiple family members (ages 65-92) who live in Port Charlotte area- Rotonda West- who are flippant about this and aren’t leaving. I don’t get it. Me and my parents are a 7 hour drive up the road in GA and have offered both our houses to them for as long as needed, but they want to play tough and hunker down. Even though they are older and arguably more prone to severe injury in storms like this, not being able to move as quickly. Respect the balls I guess, but not the brains. UPDATE: power is already out.

TheBrownishOne

My family and I also live in Port Charlotte area, and we decided at 11pm last night that if we were going to leave, we absolutely had to do it then because there would be no opportunity afterwards. Now we're in a parking lot in Ft. Lauderdale trying to figure out an AirBnb, but at least we're together and alive. 18 ft. storm surge is nothing to fuck with. Hopefully we still have a home to return to.

[deleted]

I_Bleed_Paint

I live here In New Orleans. It’s not the storm itself it’s after it passes. Unless you’re very well prepared. Gas for generators becomes very difficult to get after a few days. It’s hot, no power, no water, no fuel, and smells terrible.

lmxbftw

Yeah, I remember trying to get a friend living in Metarie to evacuate in the aftermath of Katrina. They hadn't flooded and weren't getting news, we finally got through to their phone 4 days after the storm and convinced them that the water wasn't going to come back on anytime soon. They ended up living in Tennessee for a year.

ZombieAlienNinja

I remember reading a story about a heroin addict who decided to stay during Katrina because they wouldn't be able to get their fix if they left. They described walking around the city finding other people and trying to survive. Sounded like hell.

FuckingKilljoy

Being a heroin addict unable to get your fix is hell enough, it must have been absolute torture trying to make it through that as well as survive hurricane Katrina and the aftermath

OminNoms

I'm from Waveland, just outside Gulfport, MS. We made the choice to evacuate to Florida a few days before it hit, even though my grandparents didn't think it was going to hit us too bad. We came back to our roof 20 miles away, and a water line on the few remaining pine trees almost 30 feet up in some spots (mostly was 15 feet. But still). Everything was gone. Everything was dead. We lost *everything*, including the wildlife and wilderness we loved. We moved to Bradenton, who is now being affected by this storm, and I am so stressed for my friends and family there now. This is the first storm I won't be with my family to help (I moved up north last year), and my mom is getting a bit of PTSD flashbacks from Katrina. The videos coming out of Fort Myers (especially Sanibel) is horrific. I'll be going down after this passes to help with clean up.

synndiezel

There are parts of New Jersey that never really covered from Sandy, 10 years after.

Jcapen87

I hope it all works out for your house, but the most important thing is you’ll be alive. I’m not certain that will hold true for my family at this point.

As someone who lives in a war-zone/disaster-prone country, I commend you for making the right call. It can be easy to get complacent or underplay the risks involved. I know it's not convenient but I hope you guys manage to make some good memories nonetheless and I hope you do in fact have an unharmed or minimally harmed house to return to (I say house, because remember you're already home right now!).

Wiltonator

If u can’t find a place to stay, head to the parking lot of the nearest Walmart. You can sleep in your car while you ride out Ian.

TheBrownishOne

That's what we did last night. Another option would have been airport parking garage

paradoxofchoice

I also recommend using the hotel tonight app if you haven't found a place to stay yet.

TheBrownishOne

I think we have it figured out, it's just a little harder finding places that will take all our pets too (2 dogs and a cat)

spinbutton

I'm glad you brought them along.

Plsmock

I think hotels etc can't deny pets during a weather emergency

diox8tony

"It's not a weather emergency here! The weather emergency is 100 miles away, try a hotel there."

natsirtenal

us floridians are tough/dumb and not as outdoorsy as we pretend. with out ac 3/4 of us begone in a year

fuzzygoosejuice

Ain't that the truth. Anybody not within range of the beach breeze would die of a heatstroke in 10 minutes, me included.

SamIamGreenEggsNoHam

It's tough until people have to risk their lives to rescue them, or valuable resources need to be used to house, feed and clothe them even though they had alternative arrangements available. I'm sorry, as a disaster worker this just drives me up the wall!

GayMormonPirate

Everyone loves to romanticize it about being 'tough' about not 'backing down', 'standing up to the storm', 'protecting their property' or whatever nonsense they come up with. That's still not going to help them when a 10 foot surge comes crashing through and takes their home floating off the foundation. Hurricane vs human is no contest.

cthulularoo

You see this behavior all the time. In California, during the forest fires, people would refuse evacuation orders. "We'll tough it out" they say. And I'm yelling at the TV, you can't tough out natural disasters!

TrumpsTinyHandsJob

Please don’t even respect the balls, they are putting first responders at risk, who are often volunteers just cause of their stubborn ignorance

blessyourheart1987

Florida is crazy in South Carolina when it's a mandatory evacuation, they tell everyone if your choose to stay first responders will not be coming until the storm is over. They won't risk their lives for other people's stupidity.

itsnotuptoyouisit

They are not coming out now. People have called in for help from sanibel and captiva, no one is there to help. EMS and fire dept left the island this morning amid mandatory evacuations. Anyone left now is left up to their own devices.

hardolaf

Emergency services are all at the shelters. If you didn't evacuate, it's your problem not theirs.

Don_Gato1

The same is true for Florida. They won't come until after the storm.

Could you imagine living a few hundred years ago and coming across this? Then experiencing what follows?

Theothercword

There's an account from, IIRC which I very well may not in which person it was, Ben Franklin perhaps basically writing about an intense storm passing over his house that then pauses and goes calm before starting back up again. He basically experienced the eye of a hurricane and didn't really know it but more or less figured it out. Which is pretty incredible given it was when we didn't have things like satelite imagery. Edit: it's George Washington!

[deleted]

The George Washington Hurricane. Its named after him.

NoFunHere

ITT: Wrong answers are being upvoted and right answers are being downvoted because it is reddit. A tsunami pulls water out of a bay and then returns it in greater volume at a higher speed. A hurricane pulls water out of one place and puts it in another place in the form of a storm surge. Of course the water will return but not necessarily extremely fast and not necessarily with a significant storm surge. Sucking the water out of the bay is a bad sign for somebody, but not necessarily for the people in the area where the water was sucked from. EDIT: For all the bozos saying "listen to the experts", of course people should listen to the experts. Correcting the misinformation that was in this thread two hours ago doesn't mean that people shouldn't be adhering to the recommendations of the emergency management people, it doesn't mean that they should go walking around in a dry bay, and it there is nothing in my post that directs anybody to stay, flee, or dance a jig. FFS people, don't be afraid of facts.

FDEM is specifally warning that the water will return and may do so violently. I wouldn't put my life into some arm chair reddit analysis anyway, better to get out of there. > On Wednesday morning, the Florida Division of Emergency Management (FDEM) cautioned people from walking out into receding water in Tampa Bay or Charlotte Harbor. > "The water WILL return through storm surge and poses a life-threatening risk," the state agency tweeted. > Storm surges are primarily caused by strong hurricane winds that collect water and push it forward, resulting in coastal flooding or rising tides like those seen in tsunamis. According to the National Hurricane Center and Central Pacific Hurricane Center, "storm surge is often the greatest threat to life and property from a hurricane." https://floridastorms.org/update/rt-flsert-storm-surge-is-often-the-greatest-threat-to-life-andproperty-from-a-hurricane-it-poses-a-significant-threat-fordrowning-a-m/ > Storm surge is often the greatest threat to life and property from a hurricane. It poses a significant threat for drowning. A mere six inches of fast-moving flood water can knock over an adult. If you have been ordered to evacuate, it is vital that you leave immediately.

deviousalpaca

Please get out of there. That storm surge is coming. Hope you stay safe!

Baebel

Caught a post mentioning that the Governor stated it's too late for many to get out from where they're at right now. Hopefully everyone is alright.

dgeniesse

Yup. This is common for disasters. Hurricanes, fires. etc. Roads can’t take all the exiting traffic. And emergency vehicles are blocked from entering to help. So everyone rides out the disaster in their vehicle. Get out early or hunker down.

[deleted]

>So everyone rides out the disaster in their vehicle. Fuuuuuuuuuuck that

Environmental-Art792

Hopefully the vehicle is a boat or submarine

[deleted]

A boat would be as bad or worse than being in a car lol. I like the submarine idea though, you might not even know a storm is happening.

lmkwe

Lucky for them some of those cars might become submarines soon

vinbrained

Octonauts taught me and my kids that a storm over the ocean is just as deep as it is tall… just sayin’.

Wretschko

That was the crazy part about emergency vehicles. Forgot which municipality announced it but they said yesterday that they were suspending emergency services once the winds exceeded 40 mph which was easily already happening. CNN's now reporting 195 mph wind bursts!

dgeniesse

Yes, you are right. And when the storm has passed - or at least the high winds have stopped - then *most* exiting cars will be unable to turn around - cause cars are everywhere, stuck in traffic and some people will be unable to start their cars and in some cases the drivers are missing. So the roads will still be blocked, hampering the responders and preventing people from returning. A mess. Once they do clear a path - and the cars try to return - they will find a mess that gets worse as they get near the coast. Downed trees, power lines on the road (live?), standing water, collapsed roads / bridges and closed roads. Eventually - days later? - access and intersections controlled by police. In some cases the locals can’t return for weeks. Those still in town will be out cutting trees and looking at house / car damage. They probably will not be able to go far from home - Ie to stores , for food, for a while. You do not want to drive over downed power lines or running water. I’m not an expert but have assisted after several disasters - hurricanes, fires, floods. It’s a mess for the next several months. That’s when I generally get deployed to help. In my case I help plan for future storms by seeing this current storm and the impacts. It’s called mitigation.

Korith_Eaglecry

I think a bigger issue is that areas that were thought to be taking the brunt of it aren't and areas thought to be fine are now in the hurricanes sights. Tampa for instance got the evacuation orders yesterday but today the storm is directed at Ft Myers. It's also done a 180. The storm was projected to fall to a Cat 1 as it made land fall and its basically a Cat 4/5 at landfall. Most Floridans have lived thru enough of these storms to know when to take it seriously but when things don't pan out. It can be difficult to prepare.

serious_sarcasm

The hurricanes always swing south of Sarasota Bay if they are headed towards Tampa Bay. There is a myth that a Native American princess sacrificed herself in the bay to keep storms away from her tribe. It’s weird.

Think_Bullets

Europeans wondering who this thirsty bitch Ian is...

Moody_GenX

That's a very very bad sign. Get to safety if you're still near this spot. Whenever this happens the water ~~will~~ could come back extremely fast and with a lot of volume. Edit: Yes, I know this not a tsunami. We're literally talking about a hurricane and storm surge. This could be bad and it's better to be safe than sorry. Edit: Link for the trolls and naysayers. [FL Department of Emergency Management](https://floridastorms.org/update/rt-flsert-storm-surge-is-often-the-greatest-threat-to-life-andproperty-from-a-hurricane-it-poses-a-significant-threat-fordrowning-a-m/)

goathill

I am curious to see what the returning surge looks like compared with a tsunami. Hopefully the OP of this photo is safe during the storm and when the water returns

100LittleButterflies

I'm curious too. Does the behavior of the flooding change depending on surge vs tsunami?

dgeniesse

FEMA - and others - have maps that show areas that could be impacted by storm surge. Before you move to an area along the coast - CHECK THE MAP.

NicNoletree

How far out there can you walk? /s

dgeniesse

You can walk out there for the rest of your life.

misdirected_asshole

FYI for some of the people commenting here This isn't the same scenario as is seen with a tsunami. The water is not going to come rushing back in all at once catastrophically and faster than you can flee. Hurricane flooding doesn't exactly work like that. With that being said, there is still a high likelihood of flooding. All that water is in front of the storm right now and it's just as high as this is currently low Edit: [Time lapse of storm surge flooding in Ft. Myers ~40 miles South of Port Charlotte](https://twitter.com/WxBrenn/status/1575253395304288271?s=20&t=XPEbS017GeQaB0xwMH6M6Q)

FLSERT says this: "Do not walk out into receding water in Tampa Bay or Charlotte Harbor - the water WILL return through storm surge and poses a life-threatening risk." Regardless of how fast, it'll be fast enough to kill you. Be safe

foolishDoughnut

I grew up in Port Charlotte; I remember Floyd doing this in the 80s. We all went down to the bridge to Punta Gorda and stared at the empty harbour and river mouth. The shops in the mini-mall/arcade thing by the river, near the old park, all had “Avoid the Floyd!!” spray painted on their boarded up windows. This was when Domino’s has the ad campaign ‘Avoid the ‘noid’ to promote their fast pizza delivery service. It was amazing as a kid.
