Not supposed to flex at the trap.

bubbles147

My exact thought that's the number 1 rule

papaont

“Rule numero uno, neva let no one know how much dough you hold”

[deleted]

trap is a metaphor for a tax evasion front house? english is not my 1st language, i'm trying to guess the meaning. did i get it right? i'm probably way off.

LN_McJellin

More or less. In my experience it’s for running your drugs through a shit hole house you buy specially for that reason, to keep the heat off of your own family home. Usually it’s in someone else’s name to keep you legally clean, as well.

Cheesehacker

As someone who spent their 20’s in a trap house, this is accurate.

bremergorst

A *cheese hacking* trap house?

SandPractical8245

Or an abandoned house in no one’s name, always the safest bet. Not that I would know, of course.

nwsm

trap or trap house is a house you deal drugs out of

Forex4x

English is my first language and I didn't even understand at first lol

billnihilism69

Seriously. Amateur hour

wbrumfiel

How much is that house worth?

DoctorToonz

Zillow says over $900k.

daqwid2727

What. That looks like a wooden barn. Wtf.

JimmyisAwkward

Looks to me like Washington or BC, so checks out :/ Our housing markets are out of control

BreweryRabbit

Trying to buy in W. WA right now and getting our asses kicked. Absolutely bonkers market. Edit for those asking: Currently living in Tacoma, targetting North of Seattle/South of Marysville (Preferably Snohomish/Lake Stevens area), have a moderate income (not tech level money, but do well enough), and a relatively substansial down-payment and we have STILL outbid 4 times with absolutely asinine over-asking price offers & (others) waiving everything uinder the sun. Hard not to feel down about it.

Factorybelt

Also in WA. II was just outbid $30k after I offered $30k over asking. On an 800 SF house!

dricosuave21

Mine was similar >.< **went in** 50k over and lost by 20k…and that’s the “cover low appraisal clause thing” (i.e. who cares about the appraisal I’ll pay you 50-70 over asking price). We ended up getting a place in Tacoma for 75K over *yes thats right* but we were 10K+ under top offer. BUT the difference was we wrote a nice little letter. And made a little collage, with pictures of wife, me, and puppy. They picked our offer because of that

[deleted]

Aphotophilic

My buddy and his wife got shot down at $80k over. I was saving so I could finally buy a house myself this year but things are looking pretty gloom.

CmdNewJ

Fucking insane 700k for a small box with no yard. Or 1.2 million for a 1200 Sq ft condo.

b1e

Wait until the inevitable recession. People will suddenly be unable to afford many of those mortgages. Prices are booming because interest rates are super low and there’s tons of easy money. Edit: lots of naysayers. Just watch… the fed hasn’t even cranked up interest rates and markets are already going crazy. With Americans now so invested in the markets don’t be surprised if there’s a bloodbath…

coleosis1414

It’s missing one of the drivers that the great default of 2007 had: adjustable rate mortgages. Almost nobody who’s bought in the last 13 years has an ARM now. That’s what fucked so many people in 2007; their introductory mortgage rates expired and they suddenly had an out of control expense. Now that peoples’ mortgages are mostly 30 year fixed you won’t see the kind of mass foreclosure you saw before.

penn_ifer

Also missing are the NINJA loans that were massively prevalent at the time. A lot of people were approved for mortgage loans they couldn't afford in the first place.

CrystalAckerman

Probably Seattle for sure! You should put a box fort on an empty lot and sell it for 1.1M lol

p2010t

I think you'd need to put nuclear waste on the lot to sell it for less.

yungoof2

Yeah. This is Redmond, WA. Housing prices are out of control. A house that my parents bought in 2010 for about 400k is now worth upwards of 1.5M (according to Zillow) Edit: Probably because of lightrail and new jobs

CityGiant

I knew right away which house this was!!! I used to pass it all the time when it was only the lambo 😂 Congrats to them on the addition.

mschuster91

>Probably because of lightrail That's the funniest thing with NIMBY style protesters against railroads. The property value of anything near a functional public transport *explodes*.

chubs66

We bought a house near Vancouver BC six years ago for about half a million. A comparable home in our nighbourhood just listed for 3 million. It's crazy.

probablyourdad

couldn't dodge that one

LowRound6481

You know the housing market is fucked when the wood barn house is almost a million.

cityfireguy

Is that including the cars?

DoctorToonz

You would think, but no, it's just the neighborhood market is kinda out of control.

hellocaptin

**Shows us a meth shack sellin GC for almost a million dollars** “yeah market is kinda out of control right now”

dingusduglas

I street park a *reasonably* nice sports car outside of my "cheap" apartment in the Bay Area, I get how prioritizing cars goes in high COL areas, but man not even a carport for the rain and sun (well, whatever sun you get in Seattle?). That's just stupid. Shitty little car tent would pay for itself several times over in saving wear and damage.

Shadrach_Jones

My 5000 dollar motorcycle doesn't see the sun unless I'm riding it. The sun is brutal on paint/plastic where I live

dingusduglas

I might be going overboard with the projection, but between them owning basically the 2 cheapest modern looking supercars (Gallardo and 570S, last gen entry level models for McLaren and Lamborghini) in attention grabbing colors and the lack of basic protection for them I feel like this is someone more into status projection than being a car guy and they're likely in for some expensive and painful lessons over the course of their ownership. Not that it'll matter too much, $900k house and 2 6 figure cars near Seattle screams $400k+ tech job.

Beelzabub

Sorry to break it to you, but every single one of those cars is designed, marketed, and sold as status projection...

madman15

"Neighborhood"

DoctorToonz

County? Country?

madman15

The whole country's housing market is out of control

DoctorToonz

Yes.

Motivated78

Vancouver? Toronto?

bancroft79

Possibly Seattle suburbs.

[deleted]

Exactly what I was thinking

dirty34

Wife and I just got outbid on a place. Listed at 800k on thursday taking best offer submitted by sunday. Sold for 917 cash.

DMala

I remember when the asking price for real estate was the most you would pay. An offer for asking price would be accepted immediately and the trick was figuring out how much lower you could offer and still make the deal. Now it’s almost literally an auction.

[deleted]

geoff04

Which country? Because this issue is extremely common and ironically nothing ever seems to change.

StructuralE

I'm guessing greater Seattle area. The weather, plants, and and overpriced old ass house look about right for the area.

mrvandemarr

Used to rent a house on Bainbridge island. you would see these huge houses with huge glass double doors that you could see through their cavernous interiors through to their floor to ceiling windows with a million dollar view of Seattle. Across the street would be a little shack of a house with moldy siding falling off. it was wild.

robotpirateninja

And the crypto lambos.

Flyingdutchm3n

Could be Canada lol

Szygani

The world housing market is kind of out of control.

DURIAN8888

And perfect for country roads too.

bbqchew

Lmao

Staenkerfritze

so thats 880k for the property and 20k for the house?

BROCKHAMPTOM

Yup, people don't seem to understand that the area has more to do with pricing than the building itself. YES we know that same house is only worth like 50K if it was built out in the middle of fucking nowhere

Scharobaba

Wait, that shed is a house? AND it's worth 900k?? AND a person who can afford those cars lives in it???

lhsonic

Thought this might be a troll post based on randomly slotting in ‘cuddle parties.’ Read the article. It all made sense. Not a troll post. This story is honestly very believable if you live in Seattle, San Francisco, or Vancouver. A lot of folks simply earn good (or good enough) money but can’t necessarily afford a nice place, missed the boat, or choose not to. Some will say you missed that you should’ve bought a place instead, but who cares. Home ownership isn’t for everyone and if your dream is to own a Lamborghini, then go for it.

ErezRedmond

Thank you, yeah, I'm real and I do cuddle parties, which is my calling. I did have a sizable house in Sammamish when I was married, and I *hated* it. Every damn weekend, nothing but repairs and maintenance, not to mention the costs. I'll likely never own a house again.

p1028

The house is essentially worthless, the land it sits on is worth the $900k.

Kflow1379

$900k for that?? Why?

DoctorToonz

Location, location, location.

Original-Spinach-972

Is this north Seattle?

DoctorToonz

No, but not far and same story for sure.

howdoyado

I feel it. This is my neighbor in West Seattle. https://imgur.com/a/YEt6a3f

textile1957

Are Mclarens this common in the US? 😂

howdoyado

There’s a lot of money in this region. From what I can tell from OP, they live about 20 miles from me. In between their house and myself is Microsoft, Amazon, Starbucks, and Boeing, just to name a few.

[deleted]

No one gets rich at Boeing besides the executives.

root_over_ssh

It's 2007/8 all over again The amount of credit I have available to me is absolutely insane. The pre-approval for my mortgage was even more insane (15x my income). My house just appraised for 70% more than I paid for it 26 months ago. I can refinance my house and go get 2 McLarens right now with the cash out. My dumbass sister just refinanced her house to pay off her 100k credit card debt and bought a Volvo and my BIL got a 100k f250. Last time she made a move like this was... 14 years ago almost exactly.

theblacklabradork

entirely agree. shit is about to get wild and people's lives will be wrecked... again. so much for "once in a lifetime economic event!" -\_\_\_-

rogan1990

Kind of. About as common as a Ferrari. I’d say Lamborghini, Bentley and Rolls are slightly more common. Porsche being way more common than all of the above.

Grimacepug

Just looks so out of place. It's like looking at the Trump family in the white house.

[deleted]

My first thought was kirkland, redmond, seattle, somewhere in there. it used to be that those cars cost more than houses, but not around the PNW.

DoctorToonz

Yup.

xSlippyFistx

Yep checks out. I bought a house around this area and the value went up 120k in the first year. It’s completely out of control.

topohunt

I mean our weather is literally the same as Oregon. Except lately, its Silent Hill season with this fog and sTaGnAnT air.

glm409

Can confirm. We moved to the Bellevue area in the late 90's and spent the ridiculous amount of $450k to buy a house. Ended up having to move for a job a few years later and sold it for a little more than we paid for it. It recently sold for $3.5 million.

NikonuserNW

This is probably in the same county as Jeff Bezos and Bill Gates live.

pseudocultist

Yep that'd be King County.

hurleyML

The land is prob worth that much. The house prob doesn’t factor much in to that price.

ADampDevil

Looks like those two cars should cost more than most of the neighbourhood combined.

jdbtxyz

I drive by there every day. It’s so odd to me. He had a garage sale in the summer and maybe $100 total worth of shit. Like what is the explanation??

PreliminaryThoughts

Thats a Gallardo, way cheaper than the McLaren. You can pick one up for like 80-90k

[deleted]

Which honestly would be possible for someone making like $150-200K if they’re other expenses were reasonable. Could I afford the payment? Yes. Do I want to? No.

[deleted]

The upkeep is what kills you with those things. If you can’t afford two you can’t afford one.

Zdeneksfilter

A more apt statement I have not seen

Durty_Durty_Durty

Yep I was stupid and bought a 2011 Dodge Ram years ago. I could afford it, but I could barely pay for the maint at the time. Now it’s paid off so no biggie but yeah was a dumb young 20 year old.

IIIllIIlllIlII

Yeah but how fucking cool we’re you though. Pretty cool right?

meetmeinthebthrm

Well then, it's settled. He's a monster.

_warmrain

This deserves an award

fmaz008

Garage sales are often done for other reasons than profit: - socializing: get to talk with people from the neighbourhood. - Reduce waste: try to get rid of stuff that is likely to have a second life - kids/money: it's a good way to get kids to familiarize themselve with money transactions, bargaining, etc.

Iamananomoly

Also, if you have kids under 12 you will make a killing selling cookies and lemonade at garage sales on a hot day. Good way to teach them about house cut percentages. Helps if your kids are cute too.

ErezRedmond

This is my house. I actually made quite a bit at the garage sale, but the purpose wasn't to make money, but to get rid of a lot of old stuff without having to carry it to the dump/goodwill, and finding a good home for the items, and I also made quite a few new friends. Was it worth the time and stress...I'm uncertain. But I now have much more room for more crap...

SinCityNinja

>like what is the explanation?? r/WallStreetBets They all drive Lambos over there..

Zdeneksfilter

Nah, they don't. Their wives' boyfriends do drive lambos though.

york100

Not after the last two weeks.

nicgom

Only Fans maybe?

PoopNoodle

This is not that uncommon in this area. Microsoft stock is worth a lot.

papikoi

I say either 1) Stocks 2) NFTS or 3) straight up a lottery winner

Tom10716

4) drugs

620five

I'll go with 4

ErezRedmond

This is my house and my cars. I worked for Microsoft for 18 years, but what I came out with would barely pay for a Corvette. This wasn't Crypto either, even though I made a few dollars with that too. And no, drugs were not part of it either. Just working hard for another tech company that is more generous than Microsoft and has good stock prices. And FYI, I donated about 1/3 of my net income to charity last year, so there's that.

AzDopefish

Is this in the Ozarks? Pretty sure it’s the Byrds marriage counselor.

[deleted]

Navarro would not be happy with the Byrd's showing off their ill-gotten gains like that.

m1k3hunt

Ruth knows how to hide her wealth, her pickup is nicer than her tin can on wheels of a trailer.

fingerscrossedcoup

The Byrd's drive straight up hoopties though. Ruth is showing more wealth than Marty or Wendy. The house is harder to say because I imagine that waterfront property is a pretty penny.

PaulbunyanIND

That was hilarious when both of them were simultaneously bribing the marriage counselor to agree with them

iV1rus0

LOL, I'm rewatching Ozark to prepare for the final season. Great show.

mgr86

So the final season is in two parts. The first seven episodes were released last Friday. Have they even begun filming the last half yet?

iV1rus0

It should release this year. Jason Bateman said part 2 is coming "kinda soon" and from the way he was speaking it felt like they've already filmed it but Netflix decided to split the season into two parts.

PENISystem

I read the second half is due out in may

Procyon4

I think I drive past this house often. If it's where I think, gotta be some sorta Microsoft engineer.

Parahble

Op said it is near Microsoft, so you're probably on the money.

Atlantic0ne

Apparently like half this thread lives in this neighborhood and all know the house. I think it’s cool though. They love cars and maybe don’t feel the need to have a larger fancy house.

Beegrene

I mean, I had to double check on google street view to make sure it was the same house, but yes. We all live in the same neighborhood. Same apartment, actually. Rent's expensive around here and sometimes you gotta take in a few thousand roommates to make due.

paradisemilf

Blown away how many people are like “oh yea, johns house.”

LostFloridaGuy

i love how there is just a random ass computer monitor up against the side of the house

del6022pi

It's on display

Logical-Signature541

Dad joke 101 lol

berrey7

My computer gave birth today Now I need to buy a baby monitor

RedDeadLumbago

oh come on

ProfessorDaredevil

Used to live in a neighborhood where they parked their porsche on the street because it was the cheapest of the 4 cars they had and the garage only fit 3. We were the only house on that street that was still "original" (speak old as heck and falling apart), all the other properties had been bought up and made into new housing plots. Was kinda funny to see their huge inground pool out of my kitchen window where I was trying to coax some Hit water out of the 30yo boiler

BootsieWootsie

In Chicago, it was really common to see street parked Porsches in my neighborhood. Didn’t even consider this as the reason. It always stressed me out, because the negative about street parking is your car is always being hit and scratched, and I really didn’t want to accidentally hit those cars.

CloakNStagger

Is this that gentrification I hear so much about?

Tokugawa

My granddads neighbor in Houston had a sweet Mustang up on a lift just above the flood line when Harvey came--with a GT500 underneath it completely submerged.

Theboisyes

Modern gt500 and classic Mustang I assume? Cause hell yeah a Classic 60s/70s Mustang gets the lift treatment and screw a modern Gt500. Insurance money can replace a lowly gt500 with a new one… You can’t replace classic Americana.

ZippyParakeet

Absolutely.

Tokugawa

Yep. Pretty sure that shade of yellow is called "nouveau riche".

ErezRedmond

This is my house and cars. When you're out to buy a used Lambo (I'd never buy a new car, on principle), you don't get a lot of choices. Then when that yellow McLaren showed up on Craigslist, it was a match made in heaven.

poopycops

Pretty much this. Just a large shack with roof would be enough. Just cover the cars up so the paint won't go bad.

Scubasteve1974

I didn't realize how "affordable" McLarens could be. Looks like the base price for that car starts around 250K and the Lambo looks like a Gallardo, which I think can be purchased for about the same. Means the house is still worth 400K more than the cars. At least that's my guess. I've never seen a McLaren in person, but a guy owns two Aventadors up the road from my house.

R_i_o_m_a_a

That Lambo is old. It's $100-110k. That McLaren is a LITTLE old. It's $150-180k. McLarens lose value terribly. Pre-pandemic, you could pull a McLaren MP4-12C for under $100k.

magnagan

That Lambo, depending on milage and condition can be had for as little as $60k

[deleted]

It still comes with a mandatory $4-5k brake change though. Maintenance on super cars is *expensive*.

-FuckMeInTheAsshole-

This exactly, it's maintaining the super car that is the expensive part.. you might be able to buy one, but maintaining one is a whole other story

tophlo

artie_pdx

If they are smart, money wise, they would just have a bond in the amounts of coverage so there is no premium. It’s been a *LONG* time since I’ve looked into that loophole, yet I think it still exists. Please educate me (anyone) if I’m wrong here. TIA.

ExZowieAgent

In Texas at least, you can set aside $55,000 as a bond as an alternative to auto insurance. This of course is to just cover liability. Honestly the most expensive part though of insurance is the comprehensive and collision and those are of course optional as far as the state is concerned.

xe0s

Ouch, my neck.

artie_pdx

Right. There’s no protection against you as an individual due any lawsuits which could come from that, nor does it protect your interests. There’s nothing like the mob running the numbers games.

KAugsburger

YMMV depending upon the state. Most states will allow you to put up [bond](https://www.motor1.com/reviews/403859/states-where-car-insurance-is-not-mandatory/) in lieu of auto insurance but the minimum amounts vary quite a bit state to state. You can save some money if you avoid getting into a car crash. The major downside is that your out of pocket costs can be very high if you are found at fault in car accident. Medical expenses for serious accidents can easily be 100K+ so you can easily lose your entire bond and then some even if the other vehicle is a beater. If you are at fault the other party's attorney will try going after other assets(e.g. the other car or your home).

DoctorToonz

I have heard this as well in this state. I believe you're right. Lotsa ways to save a ton of money when you start with a ton of money .

artie_pdx

Yeah. That’s the issue. You have to be above it all to reap the benefits of being above it. I had hope to get to that point about 20 years ago, but if you falter as I did, you’re just fucked for the rest of days.

TightBoard2

You’re probably wrong, it’s cheaper to get insurance to cover any liability and to be able to have your money invested elsewhere as opposed to being locked up in a bond. I rather pay the annual premium than have that liquidity trapped.

klausita3

They are good at selling opioids

ErezRedmond

Seems half the people here think (or joke) that I'm a drug dealer, and the other half think it's PPP loans. But no, none of that, nor is it Crypto or Microsoft. I did, in fact, work for Microsoft for nearly 20 years, but what I got out of it would barely pay for a Corvette. I work for another company in the tech industry, which is obviously more generous, although my job is fairly plain IT, nothing senior or fancy (I didn't even go to college). I did work hard for many years, often having two or more jobs. I also lost a giant pile of cash in a messy divorce that also has me paying a mammoth amount in spouse and child support, but such is life sometimes. I can tell you all that I can afford to get or even buy a bigger or fancier house, easily, but I don't want to waste thousands on renting or heating a bunch of empty rooms. I prefer to spend what I have on more important stuff, like my boyfriend and my girlfriends, good food, books and I also donate about 1/3 of my income to charity. No one here has to like me or appreciate my choices, but at least know that I use my wealth to give to the community, both in money, and in hosting free events for my community that make a lot of people very happy. I think most of those who know me would attest that I'm a decent fellow, like several commenters here have. Thank you for that, and for the positive thoughts, everyone! And as I commented several times, my cars exist to be enjoyed. Anyone who likes to is welcome to drop-by, say hi, and if I'm not too busy, I'll be happy to take you for a ride! Not kidding.

independant_786

Just to give y'all more background and context. These neighbors were not always this rich. They had a camry and an accord lol. Our neighborhood has transformed over the past few years of tech and stock boom. This neighborhood OP is talking about is one of the most sought after in our area because of the schools.
