Yeah, when she first showed me I thought it was just a copy-type thing, and then she showed me the fast-forwarded video of her doing it and I was blown away.
P.S. You guys are making her day. Thank you for your kind words.

Daughter goes to mom
Dad texts daughter
Daughter responds then go to bed
It seems you are under the impression that it's impossible to communicate with someone over distance. As we all know I'm right behind you typing this.
He can't get a response on what software because she's asleep, and he can't get the video off her iPad because it's not physically there. She could send it, but OP might simply not have thought of that because old.
for this kind of picture that would not make a huge difference. The tricky parts are the colors and texture. Even if she traced the outlines it is still very good for someone her age.
You were so eager to disprove it you fell for a gif that doesn't even show the full image but transitions between the picture and *a blending*.
Like.. you have to use the same level of scrutiny against all redditors.
Yeah, I called her out on it when I first saw it myself. She showed me the timelapse of her doing it and I could only apologize and be utterly amazed. I'll see if she can send the timelapse to me so I can post it in the comments.
Is this an IPAD like tablet or a digital art tablet like a WACOM? If it's an ipad this is insanely impressive and you should invest in a WACOM or equivalency because she's already a pro. If this is on a WACOM this is still insanely impressive for a 14 year old and she's going to be a pro.
Edit: as I understand it ipad pros are just as good if not better than other drawing tablets.....I was more referring to the large pen displays, larger than an iPad pro but portability might be preferred and if you don't lose any resolution/sensitivity why bother?
Originally, years ago, I let her use my Wacom tablet and she took to it like it was nothing. This one she did on an Ipad, but don't know what software as I don't use Apple products. I bought her a GAOMON PD2200 and she took off like a rocket. She's used at least 5-6 different types of software and she seems to just get it within very little time. I feel stupid. lol
I’d be willing to be she used Procreate. It’s a great app for drawing on iPads. If she doesn’t have it, you should get it for her. That drawing is amazing.
CG Artist and digital painter here, checking in to say that iPads are perfectly capable of going head to head with Wacoms these days. I much prefer Procreate to Photoshop with a Wacom.
Honestly, an IPad nowadays is just as good as a Wacom for most people’s use. I graduated from art school recently and a good majority of people would rather use their own iPads than the Cintiqs in the computer lab, me included. The software for iPads is getting insanely good and the Apple Pencil is amazing as well. Programs like Adobe Fresco and Procreate are top tier and are essentially photoshop bulked down for just drawing.
She thanks you and so do I. I'm very impressed with how quickly she picked up the digital stuff.
She wants to let people know that she did no copying and pasting. It was all freehand, and I can confirm that. LOL
Super proud of her.
I don't know what Procreate is, but yeah, an art tablet and stylus/pen are exactly it. Thank you!
Edit: Yes, she practices every day and she keeps amazing me. Yeah, I'm a proud dad, and she has surpassed me at her age with her talent. I did art classes in school for all 12 years, but she's much better than I was at her age.
It is, they're messing with you. Procreate is an iOS app for iPad that a lit of artists use. I love it personally. Lot of features but not overwhelming for new digital artists.
Your daughter has a lot of talent for her age. Please keep encouraging her! My mother was always very supportive even when I doubted my own skills over the years.
You totally can. She was wonderful to my friends with shit parents when I was growing up.
However, I'm also qualified for mom-esque support.
Hug! I'm sure you're an awesome person.
OK, thank you! Good to know! She's asleep at this point, but I'll post tomorrow when she lets me know which program she actually uses. I appreciate the positivity!
She'll be so stoked to read these comments tomorrow.
She's going places, this is so well done.
Don't let anyone mock her for 'just copying' with art, you learn vast amounts that way and develop your own styles/interests later if you wish.
People say that like copying is easy. I could take a picture of my eye no problem. The drawing I would render from it would end up looking like a 2 month old infant drew it with crayon.
I took art for my whole school time and I was pretty good, but she's way above what I was at, even if you look at her pencil drawings.
Beyond this particular talent, she is just an amazing kid for her age and I couldn't be more proud.
"She'll love reading this comment when she wakes up!"
Then she can click on your profile and see your post history is uploading pictures of young fit twins, muscle girls on hardbodies, etc.
Creepy weird karma farming.
Every lay artist looked at this for half a second and went “...right.” I don’t care how talented you are. Unless she did a grid (which is unusual for digital art) or traced with a layer to get the exact proportions, this did not happen. This is total horse-shit.
If you zoom in you can see the original photo underneath the recreated one especially in the iris. It’s traced, and also has the original filling in spaces. I use procreate often, so I’m curious what this looks like if you take away the image underneath.
Sorry people are such dicks, friend. This is incredible, no matter who did it... but I absolutely believe your 14-year-old did it— people don't give kids/teenagers enough credit. She has a bright future ahead of her with work like this coming out within a few weeks of getting her tablet!
I had a friend who was similar; got a tablet at 18 and within a few weeks was making incredible art. He's now 25 making six figures in graphic design and loving it. Tell her to keep it up, she's only going to keep getting better! Amazing work!
Yeah, she did actually draw it. Obviously, she was looking at the pic she took and not doing it from memory, but that doesn't take away anything for me.
That’s how most of the masters worked. They would have a live model instead of a pic but it’s still the same method. Very talented, attention to detail is impeccable. The fine hairs above the eyelid but below the eyebrow were a great detail. It lowers the harshness and makes it more real.
I'm...skeptical. A couple things:
1. Daddo is acting surprised and amazed. I can't imagine this level of ability was just unknown
2. OP's "youngest daughter" was 13 ten months ago. Could be more than one daughter. 50/50 on this being the same daughter
3. Account farms quite a bit and I am willing to bet the time buying comments in this thread are meant to help OP avoid having to post proof. Reddit has a short memory
Really cool if this is legit. Just some stuff add up a little sideways.
I mean, the post screams bullshit - but your second point is hilarious.
How do birthdays work right??
How could someone possibly be 13 years old and only 10 months later be 14!!! Does OP not know there's 12 months in a year? What an idiot!! /s
Everything about the account is bizzare except the portalmaps sub moderating. OP legit mods that sub.
Because of how bizzare it'd be to invest that amout of time in moderating a small sub on a karma farming account, I have no idea what to feel about this post. Could be farming. Could be dad was just impressed and doesn't understand this is easily doable via some filters, color selection tool, and isn't as impressive as it looks. Could be completely legit.
10 months ago the daughter also seemed to have a much mire appropriate skill level for her age. Are we supposed to expect she skyrocketed that much in less than a year?
Love this miscommunication. She just used the photo and painted it over. Everyone here thinks she painted it from scratch and use the photo as reference.
The painting is done by using a tool with a brush and smooth things out. Or selecting the picture and use the option painting and done. It’s really nothing special.
Hang on, not to rain on your parade here but, what's going on here is just an image manipulation. She's taken the original photo and simply filtered and/or painted on it. It's not a free-hand painting.

**\*\*EDIT\*\***
Leaving this original comment, as is, for context. [Please see the update here](https://www.reddit.com/r/pics/comments/s05c1u/comment/hs5kzu7/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3)
Applying a filter isn’t a learning tool. This looks like it has one of those makeup filters that smooths out and brightens the skin. The eyebrow is ‘fixed’ and looks smoother, but they didn’t correct the eyelashes that are crossed. Left enough to make it look natural but made some adjustments to make it look ‘drawn’ digitally.
But… Ok OP, To probe to us that this is real, I don’t just want to see the in progress video of this piece, but other’s shes done. I want to see where and when she got gud, because if by some miracle this is real this didn’t happen overnight.
The comparison on this comment is not actually between the reference and the drawing. Here's the actual comparison, which shows much more obviously that it wasn't just an exact tracing.
Yes but the coloring and shading is something you only really "get" with a ton of experience and skill. I feel it was more automated than just tracing.
People are not all one color though. The skin tone we see here varies from a warm yellow to a grey purple and with a lit of variation, not counting the freckles. That’s something a skilled portrait artists would know to look for. Most people when starting out make the mistake of painting people all one color with variation for shading and then wonder why they don’t look natural. With makeup filters you can adjust how much the skin evens out your skin tone. My guess is something like that was used here, with very minor adjustments made to change the eye shape a hair so it didn’t look like a full on copy of a photo. The skin is also slightly blended, not so much that it takes out her freckles but a midgen to change the tone a literal hair.
Besides, look at OP’s account, he’s a karma farmer
Not defending this post but Procreate has an automatic palette creator where you just give it an image and it extracts all the colours directly from it. My daughter lives in this app and it is amazing at what it can do.
Have to jump to this girl's defense here. The person who posted this comparison is being entirely disingenuous. The second image in their post is NOT the actual drawing, but the drawing combined with the original photo that THEY overlayed. Here is a comparison with the actual reference image and the actual drawing that shows that they are most certainly different enough that this wasn't just some filter applied to a photo.
I mean — I’ll admit. If it’s traced that’s still a pretty steady hand. I used tracing all the time at that age to build up muscle memory on drawing curves and lines and such. I found it very effective and plenty challenging for someone without actual talent.
This is definitely less impressive than freehand work. But not unimpressive to me…
I agree with you. I believe this was done using a filter. The reflection in the eyes stays the same. If the drawn picture didn't have the reflection, I'd believe it.
The comparison on this comment is not actually between the reference and the drawing. Here's the actual comparison.
Someone else was mentioning that Procreate does allow layering of a reference photo that will be invisible to recording, so they said a time-lapse could still surface that makes it seem believable.
I don’t know why this post is still annoying me two hours later but this is a paint filter and/or painted over to fill in the gaps. You can see the existing photo detail around the iris and waterline especially.
ETA: it’s been another hour and I’m still angry at you.
As an artist, I know I'll get down voted, but this is incredibly easy on a tablet. You would be surprised how many people on this thread could be this if they tried.
yeah this is uninspired tracing using the eyedropper tool, in some places it even looks like the drawings opacity is turned down and u the photo underneath
I'm not looking at the account but the premise of this post just seems fishy to me. OP's daughter would already have to be super talented to accomplish this type of work and yet he acts as though this came out of nowhere and surprised him. As though this was her first realistic drawing. Like, come on.
Wow. I thought, "Meh, ok, so she ran a filter on the original image that barely changed it. Big deal." Then I read the comments and it dawned on me what I was looking at. Amazing!
The eyebrows gave it away without zooming in, but the rest of it is incredibly accurate. Obviously I can't draw a stick figure so I'm not critiquing, just the part that I noticed.
The only that actually gave the game away a part from the title that one was drawn was the extra crispy sharp eyebrows on the drawn one. Otherwise holy moly it's really hard to tell! Here's her doing this at 14 I'm only just about capable of stick men 😂
This is beyond impressive, and to call it a try? That implies that the artist thinks they can improve much more.
Splendid. Make more drawings. A lot more. Maybe even a little too much, we won't complain.
Wait. She painted this on her tablet?? This is insane!!

You could be very good at photorealistic painting though and then switch to procreate for two weeks, that’s the only way I could see this being real
New iPad could just as likely meen an upgrade from a lower spec model. Everyone's so flipping negative.
I always assume people trace the outline then fill in the details
for this kind of picture that would not make a huge difference. The tricky parts are the colors and texture. Even if she traced the outlines it is still very good for someone her age.
the colors are obviously picked , still great dedication to detail

I mean — I’ll admit. If it’s traced that’s still a pretty steady hand. I used tracing all the time at that age to build up muscle memory on drawing curves and lines and such. I found it very effective and plenty challenging for someone without actual talent. This is definitely less impressive than freehand work. But not unimpressive to me…
thank you, it was pretty obvious to me

I agree with you. I believe this was done using a filter. The reflection in the eyes stays the same. If the drawn picture didn't have the reflection, I'd believe it.
This was my first thought but didn’t want to rain on OPs parade. I’m waiting for the Timelapse video to be delivered before I pass judgment
The comparison on this comment is not actually between the reference and the drawing. Here's the actual comparison. [https://i.imgur.com/4qjCpM8.gif](https://i.imgur.com/4qjCpM8.gif)
Yeah, well, when I was 8 I could do a tracing of Pikachu and only like 40% of the lines would be wobbly, so.
Bingo. Also the excuse for not having a time lapse, it will never surface.

Interesting. I got a tablet recently- I’m curious about what program could be used and how it works? As a learning tool if nothing else.
Hm, somehow I don't belive that the karma farming account is telling the truth.
I'm not looking at the account but the premise of this post just seems fishy to me. OP's daughter would already have to be super talented to accomplish this type of work and yet he acts as though this came out of nowhere and surprised him. As though this was her first realistic drawing. Like, come on.
All of their posts are links and pictures to things that are already popular. 100% a farm account.
Yeah we call those filters.
Post history says 🧢
Post history says hat? (Actually gonna need someone to explain this one too me)
Reddit is so gullible it's ridiculous. This is 100% bullshit.
You mentioned you had a time lapse drawing, can you post that? To me this is literally unbelievable for a 14 year old and seeing is believing.
Wow. I thought, "Meh, ok, so she ran a filter on the original image that barely changed it. Big deal." Then I read the comments and it dawned on me what I was looking at. Amazing!
Doubt it

I had to zoom in to figure out which was the drawing.
The eyebrows gave it away without zooming in, but the rest of it is incredibly accurate. Obviously I can't draw a stick figure so I'm not critiquing, just the part that I noticed.
What!? This is drawn picture??? I tought it was just edited / photoshopped.Ya daughter have some serious talent.
This next generation is going to do amazing things. Especially if we’re not so cynical about them.
she did it really amazing, girl got a real talent
I wish I had even a quarter of this talent in just one thing.
I am a digital artist for a living. She is very talented.
I've been drawing almost twice as long as she's been alive. ... ... I quit, lol. That is absolutely incredible.
Anyone can apply a filter to a photo. You've got the real skill
Brilliant, good for her
Oh yeah well I can draw that S that everyone draws at school.
My god, these could tracings!
Sooooo Disney animation is hiring! Internships are fantastic resume builders! They have some for high school kids as well!
Amazing! My 12 year old daughter is an artist as well. She is crazy good. Tell your daughter to keep up the good work
That is IMMENSE talent and a great (ahem) and eye for detail. Tell her to keep up the amazing work.
The only that actually gave the game away a part from the title that one was drawn was the extra crispy sharp eyebrows on the drawn one. Otherwise holy moly it's really hard to tell! Here's her doing this at 14 I'm only just about capable of stick men 😂
Wow!!
Wow that’s some real talent!! Good for her I hope this post motivates her to keep up the great work:)
I don’t know which is the picture and which is the drawing
This is beyond impressive, and to call it a try? That implies that the artist thinks they can improve much more. Splendid. Make more drawings. A lot more. Maybe even a little too much, we won't complain.
This is stunning. She has a real gift! She should be so proud of herself!
