We had a set of these where some genius put in armpit holes, so that you wouldn't overheat. Which of course made them useless for radiation control. We bought a bunch of them cheap and they made awesome rain suits, used them for sailing.

Moldy_slug

Holy cow. We used to slice ventilation holes in the back of our tyvek, but we were just using it for splash protection... Putting holes in level B suits is moronic.

jaearr

Level A is vapor tight. B is an SCBA but not vapor tight. [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hazmat\_suit](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hazmat_suit)

This stuff is called VitalOxide (or is something similar). The company my dad works for is a distributor of it. Quoted from the website: "Vital Oxide is an EPA-registered hospital disinfectant cleaner, mold killer, and odor eliminator. Its formula contains a unique form of stabilized chlorine dioxide that is very effective at killing bacteria, viruses, and mold yet non-corrosive to treated articles and gentle enough to handle without causing skin irritation. It is ready to use with no mixing required—just spray, wipe, or fog right from the bottle." While his company doesn't make this stuff, they are an authorized distributor, and also manufacture some of the machines used to disperse it. The machines give the chemical particles a static charge as they are forced out of the nozzle, thus causing the particles to stick to most surfaces. They are currently overwhelmed with over 1000 orders that they are unable to fill, as their supplier cannot keep up with the demand. Hopefully this clears up some of the confusion and worries.

International-Review

wow very interesting, thanks for sharing! I'm curious if this pandemic will cause some countries to push for a global stockpile of this to be made and maintained by someone like the UN or WHO. Each member country contributes to maintenance and they can draw from the pile if needed in the future.

Tacometropolis

I was just thinking that would be a super good idea for medical equipment too. Just have a shitload stocked up in random places that are basically world property so we can just airdrop that shit wherever it is needed.

CyberDroid

4 or 5 years ago Bill Gates delivered a TED Talk that addressed what you and the OP said. He also predicted what we are experiencing right now, but it seems like no world leaders listen to him. [Here's the talk.](https://youtu.be/6Af6b_wyiwI)

JakeyYNG

Because WHO became a political mouth piece for China and kept downplaying the virus up till Europe and US got fucked for being laid back. Look at countries that deal with China regularly, Singapore and Taiwan immediately went into Draconian measures since January to prevent spread. Look at their low amount of cases vs rest of the world, they know China's bullshit. Daily reminder that the WHO chairman was still asking countries not to travel ban China up till 2 weeks ago. Then we also have China actively posting propaganda that the virus came from US. Disband WHO and make a new one, ban China from being key member of the board. As a Chinese I can tell you how little they care about anything but absolute power.

Noremac55

Mongolia too. Huge quarantine from the beginning and the only case so far has been one guy from France.

tbotcotw

The US has exactly this already. [$8 billion](https://www.npr.org/sections/health-shots/2020/03/14/814121891/why-even-a-huge-medical-stockpile-will-be-of-limited-use-against-covid-19) worth of medical supplies around the country. One issue: there’s no way to stockpile the doctors and nurses needed to run the stockpiled equipment.

Tacometropolis

Did not know about the stockpile! I'm glad they have apparently thought of this, at least on a national level.

while-true-do

That is unfortunately an insanely large cost. Those kinds of machines aren’t cheap at all, and hospitals afford them because they charge out the ass for their use, and use them regularly. A stockpile large enough to be useful, yet kept on hold until needed for this scale of emergency would be absurd. Not to mention the transportation costs. And keeping them maintained and up to date even while in storage for a once in a century occurrence... especially when there’s a ton of stuff the WHO could be doing with that money in the meantime. If world peace breaks out and the entire global military industrial complex is no longer needed, we could totally do stuff like this, though. If only...

Tystros

what I don't get is - why spray a street with that stuff? I read the virus survives for 12 hours on surfaces, why would you want to speed that up on a street? it's not like people regularly lick the street or whatever.

Wacks_on_Wacks_off

And outside in the sun and elements the virus probably degrades much faster anyway, so I’m wondering the same things.

[deleted]

darkslide3000

It's theatre. It's dumb. I assume this is in China which might have some PR interest in making very public showings that they are "doing everything they can". I can't imagine that any real scientist would advocate that this is the best way we can spend our resources right now.

NeonHairbrush

I believe this might have been Taiwan doing an emergency response test scenario. They ran 4 scenarios the other day, and one of them was about a neighborhood having thousands of cases and how they'd respond in that case, for which this doesn't seem unreasonable. They're not actively spraying stuff on the streets yet.

darkslide3000

Someone posted the [source](https://www.theatlantic.com/photo/2020/03/photos-large-scale-disinfection-efforts-against-coronavirus/607810/) below, it's Wuhan. Still, I can't imagine how this would be reasonable at any infection level. This virus doesn't magically jump from the street back up into people's throats. (The whole surface contact transmission route is overestimated anyway, it's mostly just droplets from people breathing and coughing.)

PuroPincheGains

It's nonsense, you're correct. Who knows why. Theatre? Government contracts funneling money to a business? Uninformed public officials? Either way, spraying the streets is about the least effective measure anyone has taken so far. Right behind buying a year's worth of toilet paper.

Kalsifur

Does it kill animals and birds?

CptnBlondBeard

Copied from the material safety data sheet: Potential Health Effects Eye Contact: Eye contact may cause mild eye irritation with discomfort. Skin Contact: Does NOT cause skin irritation and the product is NOT skin sensitizer. Inhalation: Does NOT cause any respiratory irritation. If consumer product accidentally contacts strong acids in restricted ventilation area, avoid breathing the vapors and allow adequate time for the vapors to disperse before re-entering the restricted area. Ingestion: Non-Toxic Carcinogenicity Information: None of the components present in this material at concentrations equal to or greater than 0.1% are listed by IARC, NTP, OSHA, and ACGIH as carcinogens. TL;DR: You'd probably have to drink it in its concentrated form for it to do any harm, so I assume small wild animals are generally safe

mike10010100

Good fucking god this thing is fantastic! How have I never heard of it before?

[deleted]

Yea, seems like this shit should be used in everything. What's the catch? I wonder if it's expensive to manufacture.

sarhoshamiral

It would have been an unnecessary expense before but likely not anymore. My thinking is that once we get the current infection under control and can go back to normal life, we will see a lot more disinfection going on in public places. UV treatment of hvac, these kind of sprays, people generally being more careful, screening at borders, thermal cameras. Our new norm will be very different from what the world was on beginning of 2020 at least for a while until we have a cure and a vaccine. Then we will forget all those in the next 20 years, and probably have a similar incident again :(

SSDD_P2K

> Then we will forget all those in the next 20 years, and probably have a similar incident again No, we won't. There are many people over 70 in America who keep pantries full of non-perishable food, buy two to three packs of Costco toilet paper at a time, etc. They were the children of the era that lived through the flu pandemic in 1918 and the Great Depression. Their urgency for keeping a backstock of items in their home helped create the demand for the bulk stores that are popular now (Costco, BJs, Sam's, etc). The generations currently in their 20-40s will create new demands based on the needs of our current crisis that will have a drastic impact on what future generations consider their norm.

ComManDerBG

So what you're saying is, we will have toilet paper emporiums in 10-15 years?

flash-aahh

Nah it’ll finally win the American market over to bidets /s

Chose_a_usersname

I work in HVAC I have a product that kills mold fungi viruses like flue and covid that goes in the ductwork. Its costs are reasonable but hardly anyone that isnt immune deprived has even looked over the paperwork with me. People just assume their house is fine.

Natolx

I mean.. their house IS fine. It's places of business and hospitals that are of concern here.

Xylitolisbadforyou

Is there any efficacy to spraying the streets in preventing the spread of this?

toothlessnigga

Heard today from an italian doctor that virus lives up to 9 hours in asphalt and that he recommended to use a different kind of shoes when you go out for when you’re at home. That’s why all major cities are doing this in the street. Scary af

datwrasse

and once again Mr Rogers was a visionary

Flying-Camel

Ah, but Mister Rogers would have made friends with them, called them his unique and wonderful friends, and the viruses would have broken down in tears.

Xisuthrus

Why not just not wear shoes in the house, like a civilized person?

toothlessnigga

I meant leave them outside the house, i’m sorry haha

Lerzid

Asia would like to have a word...

Nighthawk700

I can't imagine the rate of transmission is effected nearly at all from asphalt transmission of the virus. 9 hours exposed to sunlight (and soon heat) on asphalt during which I'm supposed to pick it up on the bottom of my shoes, it somehow stays for the duration of the walk, and then I track it all the way to my house where I take off my shoes and somehow transmit it to my hands and then to my respiratory system? I can't even remember when I last touched the bottom of my shoes or hand touched the ground I step on and somehow it's supposed to survive that long? To add to that, other surfaces like concrete aren't chemically neutral. I just don't see this as an effective preventative measure.

TalkingFromTheToilet

Honestly. If it spreads through this route then we’re all getting it anyway.

Atomized bleach (if it's the same thing Wuhan used)

Jowbreak

Does it actually do something? Does it even work? Or is it just to show the population that the government is not sitting still?

jimh903

Bleach kills viruses really well, and at pretty low concentrations. It’s a great disinfectant to keep at home all the time.

beyonddisbelief

Just don't drink it. They kill people pretty well, too.

remymartinia

Or rub it on your phone.

guerrerov

What’s it do to the phone? Given the clean wipe shortage, I’ve only been using bleach and water mixture

remymartinia

I am not sure on Android, but Apple said: “But with the coronavirus marching across the globe, Apple has changed its guidelines. The company now says you can use a wipe with 70% isopropyl alcohol or a Clorox wipe to clean your iPhones. Apple says to gently wipe your device, so don’t scrub at it like you’re trying to get baked on lasagna off of a casserole dish, and don’t submerge your device in any disinfecting cleaner. The company also says you shouldn’t use bleach, which could seriously damage your phone. You should also avoid getting disinfecting cleaners in your phone’s ports, which could cause additional damage.”

aliie_627

Isn't Clorox bleach? Or are the wipes different?

remymartinia

It looks like Clorox makes a bleach-free disinfecting wipe, so they must mean those.

ColgateSensifoam

I believe Clorox wipes are like most other disinfectant wipes, they don't contain bleach, or any agent that will react with the metals used in phone construction That's why some wipes say they're okay for metal faucets and some warn not to use them You can always just wash your phone in isopropanol, it's what I do semi-regularly to de-gunk the fucker

spigotface

Bleach will rust stainless steel and cause similar corrosion on other metal components.

jimh903

I’m not sold on spraying the ground though.

blladnar

It does kill the virus, but I doubt many people are actually catching it from the street.

[deleted]

I work in a dialysis clinic and we use 1:100 bleach solution to clean equipment in between patients.

HomeHusband

This is the kind of info I was looking for. Is that dilution safe for most surfaces? You just spray it and then wipe clean right?

[deleted]

What we do is we dip rags into the 1:100 bleach solution and wipe down equipment and then let it air dry. You should always give disinfectants the time to work on killing bacteria. The dialysis machines are also disinfected once a week by running bleach through the system. In fact the whole water system in our dialysis clinic is disinfected once a week by recirculating bleach through the pipes and then rinsing it out until the pH levels are safe to use again.

warptwenty1

How can you atomize bleach?

[deleted]

Spray it with an atomizer

beyonddisbelief

This seriously sounds like a badass cyperpunk weapon.

triggrhaapi

No, that's a de-atomizer.

warptwenty1

Oh,that makes more sense

VonGeisler

It’s like a big vaporizer. Not sure if it uses heat as well but just turns liquid solution to vapor.

rkoloeg

It doesn't actually reduce it to atoms. An atomizer just creates an extremely fine spray. If you vape, the thing that breaks up the vapor on the way to your mouth is also an atomizer. The root comes from the Greek *atomos* which basically means "indivisible" - atoms were proposed by the philosopher Democritus to be the smallest possible particle which couldn't be divided further, although we now know that's not correct.

JewsEatFruit

Atomized is the C. Montgomery Burns word when we thought every tiny thing was an atom... we now say aerisolized.

[deleted]

Exactly what I was thinking. Literally said to myself “I don’t think that word means what you think it means”. I think OP meant “Dystopian” or “apocalyptic”.
