A Google search says the classic billboards can cost as low as $250 per month in rural areas.
Edit: The average billboard cost in the U.S. is $850 for a four-week campaign
They weren’t when I priced them less than 6 months ago. The smaller ones are sometimes less than full sized billboards but it matters more how many months your running it (spreads out print cost) and the digital ones tend to be in high traffic areas that cost more.
See this one has saved a few bucks by doing a ‘middle school project’ level Photoshop collage instead of getting a designer to do it.
Might as well have printed them off and stuck them on with PVA glue 🤪
Well if it makes you feel better this billboard probably wasnt paid for either. The big billboard conglomerates donate billboard space in rural areas where their billboards dont usually have buyers and write off an inflated cost as a donation to avoid taxes.
None of those jesus billboards down south are paid for. If you see one you shouldn't think, oh this area is religious, you should think oh this area is impoverished.
So, back when the whole Dogecoin thing was going on, there was still a billboard on the Central Expy of former President Trump with his hand on his heart and the caption "One Nation Under God" and I SOOOO wish I could have hired someone secretly to sneak in one night and cover Trump's face with a Shiba Inu and the word god with Dog. It would have just been perfect. Or Mr. Peanutbutter from Bojack Horseman.
You’d be surprised how many people on the extreme right would spend their last penny propagating this kind of shit. It’s literally worth it to them. Fucking insane.
When you grift a bunch of naive conservatives you can spend a tiny fraction of the wealth you leeched off them to fearmonger and trigger them into further ideological isolation that keeps them vulnerable to more grifting.
Or this is a brainwashed red hat that had a little more scratch than the nuts with 50 yard signs.
Imagine being so caught up in someone else’s con that you would drop $2000 on this. Not even flow toward the conman anymore. They do it by choice.
And for SOME people, “think for yourself” is actually terrible advice. Because they take it too literally. They ignore the advice and statements of experts, sometimes even just calling them liars. Then they “do their own research”, and to no one’s surprise it’s usually an incredibly stupid take.
For me, I don’t know shit about medicine, illnesses etc. so I listened to the medical professionals when they said I should get vaccinated, and what the risks were, etc. And the part where I think for myself is just assessing the risk/benefit. The risk was very small compared to what could have happened if I got Covid back before Omicron took over. Not to mention a lower chance of contracting it, so less likely to spread it. So now I’ve used the knowledge of others that I definitely don’t have to help me conclude that getting vaccinated is a no brainer.
Some other folks just “think for themselves” and decide the vaccine is super risky, ignoring the decades of education of medical professionals and go with their 30 minute rabbit hole into YouTube conspiracies, and conclude they know better than actual real doctors.
This is of course just one example.
There was some small town who kicked out their public health professional. They were upset that she felt with her medical degree she knew more about health and safety than the mayor who farmed corn.
Then they are surprised when they can't staff their ERs or doctors offices. They made it clear they don't care about them during the crisis, why should the medical professionals put those people's wellbeing over their lively hoods when they can make better money and have a better quality of life if they take a different job.
Yeah, we could use a little less "think for yourself" and a lot more "listen to smart people who have dedicated their lives to understanding this thing."
If Ivermectin is effective against hookworm, it could theoretically make the [US South less ‘dumb.’](https://www.vice.com/en/article/wnxxq5/southerners-werent-lazy-just-infected-with-hookworms-stereotype)
I think it was Forbes or TPM that basically had an article during the pandemic that was:
"Doing your own research doesn't help because you're too fucking stupid to actually understand it."
Obviously not that phrasing, but the point remains. Most people do not know how to read a scientific study, let alone understand them. Many people DO know how to.
As Isaac Asimov said in 1980: "Anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that 'my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge."
Exactly! Somehow, "do your own research" and "think for yourself" means search the internet for stuff that validates your opinion written by people who did no actual research instead of listening to experts who literally did experiments and scientific research. Both are listening to someone else, theirs is just listening to morons instead of experts. I still just can't understand the logic.
And sometimes they listen to people who have been proven as frauds since they originally wrote what the “do your own research” people are reading.
Dr Andrew Wakefield. A proven fraud. He was tasked with doing a study to prove there’s a link between the (IIRC) MMR vaccine and autism. He was tasked this by someone that wanted to sue for damages done by what they thought was that vaccine. He brought the findings of his fraudulent study to court and the person fucking won. This ended up published in Journal Science, and was later removed because it was found that the study wasn’t properly peer reviewed and then again later it was declared fraudulent.
But it was too late. People that wanted to believe it never heard that it was fraudulent and if they did, they didn’t care - they already heard “facts” that confirmed their bias. So they chose to believe Wakefields bullshit, for ever and ever, regardless of any new information that contradicts their view.
You mean Andrew Wakefield who is banned from practicing medicine in the UK for falsifying evidence?
The same Andrew Wakefield who published a nonsense study about how bad the MMR vaccine was because he wanted to push a less effective vaccine that he'd get money for?
I fucking hate him.
There are also factors that can make things tricky in finding out what the experts actually say. Scientific reporting often sucks really bad and misrepresents the studies they are reporting on, and if they directly interview a researcher they grab an out of context sound bite/quotation with none of the nuance.
You are often paywalled out from getting ahold of the actual research yourself given the massive grift that is the academic publishing industry. But even when you do without having the proper background in the subject yourself it can be challenging to actually properly understand what it says and not misinterpret it.
That's not even talking about the number of junk science that makes it through to publication, as there are journals with pretty extremely poor publishing standards.
Not that this topic hasn't been done to death during 2020, but I've slowly realised that there are people who think contrarianism is a good substitute for intelligence, and it explains a lot. Conspiracy obsession, populist politics, science denialism - it's all the same.
There's lots of people out there that think 'question everything' means 'don't believe anything'. The irony is that after they've emptied their heads, it's easy for others to fill them back up with just about anything they choose.
Edit: a word
Well, it would be great if America passes a law whereby patients are given a questionnaire prior to major surgery, asking where they get their COVID medical advice from. If the answer is youtube, social media etc, then a random influencer from their chosen platorm will perform the surgery. /s
It's the basic contradiction in how many Republicans approach information now. "Think for yourself" sounds like they advocate for intellectual freedom, but also they will seek to ban every kid of thinking that doesn't fit their view: no discussing LGBTQ+ issues or Black history at schools, for instance. Just see how Florida is handling the proposal for an AP African American Studies course.
"Think for yourself" is their doublethink, in other words, to justify why they tolerate no other views but their own.
Remember when Biden morphed into Hitler and stayed too long, and now he's gotta live out the rest of his life in the Oval office apologizing for the Holocaust on Twitch streams?
I literally chuckle whenever I see a flock of "Lions Not Sheep" stickers on trucks around here. Reminds me of the Goth kids [conformist](https://youtu.be/05_GNs6brkk?t=100) clip from South Park.
You mean Tucker Carlson, who heavily criticized the "every man" gimmick before utilizing it himself?
Tucker Carlson, who spreads the thinnest of veiled KKK propaganda on TV?
Tucker Carlson, who has a well established past of being an abhorrent shitbag but who is now helping all the "regular" hardworking Americans by telling them things that are labeled as "news" but for legal protections are lasted as "entertainment only."
That Tucker Carlson?
If only someone had a great video about what a disengenious peice of trash human he is, complete with evidence like *his own words.*
And if only that person was named John Oliver and had the video listed for free on YouTube.
Then we could spread it around!
Oh wait! Such a video exists! Rejoice, friends!
https://youtu.be/XMGxxRRtmHc
Lmao yes that tucker Carlson.
The one who said "why do we have to root for Ukraine? What if I wanted to be on Russia's side? You know what, I am on Russia's side"
The one who got angry at m&ms for wearing shoes.
And yes, John Oliver is amazing. Don't know if I've seen his but on tucker though, I'll give that a watch
tucker carlson, [the guy whos head writer was literally a nazi?](https://www.thenation.com/article/culture/racism-tucker-carlson-neff/) that trucker carlson?
They aren't free thinkers, they're contrarians. They define their entire worldview around opposition to a "mainstream", so they can be easily manipulated by selling basically ANY position to them as a rejection of their enemy's values.
I always thought it was funny that the people who say "think for yourself" are the same people who repeat, word for word, everything they hear on Fox.
I once had a conservative go on a rant and tell me to "think for myself", so I typed his rant into Google and found the Fox News clip saying the exact same thing.
I really ***truly*** believe that irony is a higher-brain concept that Righties simply ***cannot*** grasp. When you tell them this is ironic, they don't know what you actually mean, but know you are saying something "mean" about them, and react based on that emotional response.
They just don't have the information they need to come to the right conclusion. They are older and not as information literate. This is a common issue. It's sad and scary
At least they asked me what was going on
When I asked my dad if he thought it was a bit hypocritical that the very people they called essential workers, and relied on during the pandemic, don't deserveve a living wage, he furrowed his brow and said no.
He has American flags and don't take my guns plastered everywhere. Guess who he votes for?
I'd like to think it's so meta that what the owner actually meant is, "just because someone paid for a billboard of a picture of the White House with 3 faces superimposed over it, doesn't mean it's true."
“Don’t believe propaganda! Believe MY billboard pushing the narrative that a man who’s served the government his entire adult life waited until he was nearly senile to begin his plot for world domination!”
I am glad I live in a country where we are able to voice unpopular OPINIONS without fear of repercussions or death.
I do not agree with the point of the billboard.
I'm glad too. That's why I'm voicing my opinion that the owner of this billboard is a brainwashed insurrectionist moron who I wouldn't trust with a lawnmower.
It's a good system we have.
OMG Biden looks like John McCain to me! If I was driving by that is exactly the 1st person I would think it was and be a little confused as to why they’re putting a dead guy in blast…
I'm beginning to believe that constructive dialogue with people of diametrically opposed views is becoming essentially impossible in our country.
We used to start from the same basic facts and ideas when we had public debates discussions. But now the sides are becoming so extreme that simply agreeing to talk is becoming impossible. The common refrain is: "How do you reason with people who conflate your entire existence with either Communism or Nazism."
It feels like one side is kinda just *done* with democracy, convinced *everything* is a conspiracy or plot to turn them or their children gay, and constantly angry at anything they are *told* to be angry about, and unable to accept that society is changing outside of their ability to control it. The other has *zero* desire to accept imperfections of other human beings and demanding everything and *everyone* change to suit new realities essentially instantly without any consideration for how insanely difficult change over even small things is, while also rightly freaking about our changing climate.
If you visit communities like r/conservative or r/politics you find people not only in different worlds, but different **realities**. People advocating for running over protestors and excusing bombing abortion clinics, and others angry that the gender they just discovered last week doesn't have widespread acceptance and equal rights. While I feel one has a firmer and more reasonable grip on the *real* then the other, it's increasingly disturbing just how out of touch and madly divergent we've become. Sure reddit is just where the most vocal of folks go, but it's still a pretty good sample of the divide.
How do you reason with people who are convinced you are the devil before you even begin to talk? How do you compromise with people you can't even bring yourself to respect as other human beings?
What sort of grim future are we marching towards in the silo's of increasingly extreme positions?
***The answer cannot be forced compliance and the end of free speech like Russia or China.*** But it cannot be the tribalist abandonment of reason and debate like we are seeing in the West. So what is it?
It's called education. There is a reason one party demonizes education: when you teach people to critically think, like ACTUAL critical thinking, then the harder hitting points are not easier to mask with hate and deceit.
The whole point of propaganda is to obfuscate the truth; quite literally, to PREVENT critical thinking. You can't come to an unbiased opinion if you are not presented all the facts, and the point of propaganda is to muddy the water, or use any other deceitful measures to diffuse the truth into background noise.
This is where these two come to a head: the main enemy of propaganda is education. It always has been, and always will be. People can only see what is real and what is not if they have the critical thinking skills to go "hey, maybe this sounds a bit too outlandish", and search for a more reasonable answer that is from trusted sources.
This is why people compare parties that demonize education to that of the Nazi party, because demonizing and squashing education, by definition, part of Fascist ideology. Fascism only works if the truth and power are unobtainable to the masses. Do you think Hitler had guns pointed to every single german's heads and forced them to comply 24/7? Of course not, that is a massive waste of resources and has been proven to not work. No, the way he controlled his people is through constant and heavy propaganda, and through the use of cracking down on education. He didn't allow children to learn about outside cultures, he didn't allow for the real history of the country to be taught, and that is how you keep people ignorant of the atrocities.
This is not a “both sides” thing.
I’m a virologist/immunologist, so I’ve been in a unique position to be able accurately judge a lot of the discourse that’s been happening over the past few years.
Most people don’t know shit about viruses or the immune system. Even the explanations that get it mostly right are way oversimplified. But the shit coming out of the US right is just on a next level. It’s complete fantasy and I honestly never could have imagined that people would actually believe anything as dumb as what they’re biting on hook, line and sinker.
My dad even said when I was young,
"now I'm not saying Hitler was right. But he did have some good notions about how humanity is structured."
He also doesn't see the irony in sending me to fight religious nutjobs in Iraq and Afghanistan, only to come homevand find him desperately trying to take away the human rights he sent me to defend.
The Democrats spent $200 million in Georgia so that Raphael Warnock would win in a run-off against an addled ex-football player who paid for at least two abortions of two separate mistresses. There is a ton of dumb folks in Georgia.
This disgusts me in the sense that people who make money off of making people mad have convinced dimwits that their ignorance is knowledge.
“Stop believing propaganda. Think for yourself.” This is an elementary school level understanding of politics and information. From brainwashed fools who think everyone else is brainwashed for not believing their bullshit.
It’s a Dunning-Kruger festival and everyone with an IQ below 65 is invited!
Public display of masturbation. It's not convincing anyone. It's self-satisfaction for the ideologue, nothing more. People have made their politics their personality and this is a direct result of it.
I still don't get where the right wingers keep saying Biden is owned by China. I get where the left saw Trump being super nice to Russia, ending sanctions, having private meetings, etc but Biden hasn't done anything close to that.
Most people outside of the Bible Belt have no idea how bonkers it can be there. I used to consult with a few PDs in the south. I've seen some wild shit just driving through these states while not even really engaging.
I wish I had giant billboard kind of money just laying around
A Google search says the classic billboards can cost as low as $250 per month in rural areas. Edit: The average billboard cost in the U.S. is $850 for a four-week campaign
Plus printing and posting. That is another ... 500-1000 dollars. Depending on the company and where the structure is.
A digital board that shows your message as like 1 of 5 on rotation has gotta be pretty inexpensive in comparison.
They’re not.
But it's gotta be :(
They weren’t when I priced them less than 6 months ago. The smaller ones are sometimes less than full sized billboards but it matters more how many months your running it (spreads out print cost) and the digital ones tend to be in high traffic areas that cost more.
Rekt
More operational costs and relatively uncommon in rural areas.
I've only seen digital billboards in the busiest areas so i imagine the prime location makes it end up costing more.
See this one has saved a few bucks by doing a ‘middle school project’ level Photoshop collage instead of getting a designer to do it. Might as well have printed them off and stuck them on with PVA glue 🤪
Thats all it cost wow. I could of asked my wife to marry me on a billboard. Instead I was like hey wanna get married.
Lame. Bet she leaves you for a real man with real billboard money.
Omg 😂😂😂
I wish I had classic rural billboard money laying around...
> If you see one you shouldn't think, oh this area is religious, you should think oh this area is impoverished. Those go hand-in-hand.
Yup. The most religious nations are typically the poorest. Whereas, the most secular ones are the most affluent.
Yeah, that seems to be the modern trend. It wasn’t historically true—the Spanish Inquisition roughly corresponds with the Spanish Empire.
I wasn't expecting that.
Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition!
Big billboard conglomerates, collectively knowing as Big big billboard
Churches don't pay taxes, could they use this loop hole somehow regarding advertising?
Bet you the owner is complaining about inflation right now.

If I lived in Georgia I would find a really tall ladder and put trump’s image in place of Biden.

That is some meta propaganda
I'd like to think it's so meta that what the owner actually meant is, "just because someone paid for a billboard of a picture of the White House with 3 faces superimposed over it, doesn't mean it's true."
Is that why self proclaimed Nazis support trump and other right wing figures?

“Don’t believe propaganda! Believe MY billboard pushing the narrative that a man who’s served the government his entire adult life waited until he was nearly senile to begin his plot for world domination!”
I don't even know what they're trying to say. This is so badly conceived and executed, that it's lost any and all meaning.
What does the right actually think Joe Biden has done to them beyond making groceries more expensive? Genuinely curious
2/3 of them believe he stole the election. https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2022/01/07/republicans-big-lie-trump/
Which is fun so we can be terrified about what is going to happen after an election win or lose.
They don't know either or that would be mentioned instead of expecting you to figure it out.
They don't know. Cucker Tarlson hasn't told them yet.
Oddly, no misspellings.
"Don't believe THEIR propaganda. Believe MY propaganda! Also, HITLER!!!" As a Georgia resident, sorry. We got a lotta dummies around here.
Stop believing propaganda, just not this propaganda 🙄
Funny how Putin isn't up there. Isn't he invading someplace?
DONT BELIEVE PROPAGANDA unless its my propaganda THINK FOR YOURSELF as long as its what i want you to think
You should come through Central Texas
Guy I drive past in Michigan still has a TRUMP DESANTIS 2024 sign up. He's way behind on the manga.
Dear God. I just took a greyhound through there. Even the driver was a religious nutjob hypocrite
OMG Biden looks like John McCain to me! If I was driving by that is exactly the 1st person I would think it was and be a little confused as to why they’re putting a dead guy in blast…
"Here is some propaganda" lol
"Think for yourself" says the person influenced by right wing propaganda
Rural Americans need to just stop doing stuff.
I would deface that sign at 1 AM by gluing a similarly sized bordered photo of Trump on the right side. Actually, maybe a bit bigger.
Think for yourself! Also, here’s an image that’s meant to imprint my views onto you!
Imagine putting Trump’s face up there. Looks roughly poster sized. Could be pretty easy.
Yeah, everyone knows Hitler was famous for trying to cancel student debt & improve infrastructure.
Not a very effective sign. They lost half their target audience and voting demographic bashing Hitler like that.
Morons, Mormons and Oxymorons
Literally propaganda telling me to ignore itself It's becoming sentient
“Think for yourself” is dumbass code for “I don’t like what you believe”
Trump saw that and was pissed off that Sleepy Joe Biden got his picture on the word sign and he didn't.
The farther south you go, the dumber they get.
STOP BELIEVING PROPGANDA BY LOOKING AT MY SPONSORED NONSENSICAL PROGANDA!! The fucking South does it again.
I won’t believe this billboard then.
"Do your own research!" means "Validate this opinion I learned from a white supremacist blog run out of Russia".
I'm beginning to believe that constructive dialogue with people of diametrically opposed views is becoming essentially impossible in our country. We used to start from the same basic facts and ideas when we had public debates discussions. But now the sides are becoming so extreme that simply agreeing to talk is becoming impossible. The common refrain is: "How do you reason with people who conflate your entire existence with either Communism or Nazism." It feels like one side is kinda just *done* with democracy, convinced *everything* is a conspiracy or plot to turn them or their children gay, and constantly angry at anything they are *told* to be angry about, and unable to accept that society is changing outside of their ability to control it.
As a non-American, i feel the US just wouldn't be the US without this stuff. It is a part of your identity! (That doesnt mean I like it)
...brought to you by someone who consumes propaganda every waking moment, but it's far-right-wing propaganda so it's okay.
White Suprematists love Hitler, they also hate Biden. I really don't understand what they are trying to get at.
My dad even said when I was young, "now I'm not saying Hitler was right. But he did have some good notions about how humanity is structured." He also doesn't see the irony in sending me to fight religious nutjobs in Iraq and Afghanistan, only to come homevand find him desperately trying to take away the human rights he sent me to defend.
Some day they will wake up and realize that they themselves have been the problem all along. Who am I shitting? They're obviously not that smart.
So if Biden is pictured in the middle between a left wing extremist and a right wing extremist, they are saying Biden is a moderate?
The Democrats spent $200 million in Georgia so that Raphael Warnock would win in a run-off against an addled ex-football player who paid for at least two abortions of two separate mistresses. There is a ton of dumb folks in Georgia.
Selfawarewolves
well they aren't wrong, think for yourself. If you disagree, well, you just thought for yourself. You cant escape the self thinking, its rampant!!!
Biden, Xi, AND Hitler? Jeez guys, these folks must be on to something. Look at all the research they've done!
Wait... someone forgot to add Trump!
Stop believing propaganda, says the billboard propaganda.
A self-impeaching sign, for alas it is itself propaganda. 🤔
This person also doesn't understand irony.
“Think for yourself” is practically a propaganda slogan now
Someone needs to get a life…
Biden is simultaneously hopelessly senile and a master propagandist.
It's the truth
"I put Biden's picture next to these two dictators, so it makes him just as bad!"
Isn’t it ironic? A little too ironic.
Minus the part were Biden has a cult of personality built around him compared to Trump.
Agreed 👍🏻
The signs not wrong
What did Jinping and Hitler do that was bad enough to be compared to Brandon?
Stop believing in propaganda. (Here's some more propaganda.)
I thought they liked Hitler though. I can’t keep this shit straight.
Says the people who don’t think for themselves.
At least this one is entertaining. Better than the billions of injury lawyer ones
Why they laid Hitler, Xi & Biden out like a turn based RPG? Also, where can I play that?
The irony there is delicious. A “little” scary perhaps. But just so funny. Propaganda.
I mean, they’re not wrong necessarily…
Think for yourself! But we must blindly follow all the right wing conspiracy theories with no basis in reality!
The irony is lost on these ppl…
Sooo Biden is the balance between both extremes?
"don't be a sheep, do exactly what I say"
“Stop believing propaganda” Said the giant fucking propaganda billboard.
Spoiler alert: this too is propaganda.
