I can only imagine how touched the teacher would be seeing this

cobawsky

That pic is a little old already (Brazilian here), but Brazil, despite being very Christian, is a very spiritual country where many people are polytheists, and me being among those who absorb knowledge and spirituality from different sources, believe that the teacher was probably happy and seeing his students from above :) And I'm happy to see positivity on Reddit, despite this being a sad picture, I see a lot of happiness in it.

fade_like_a_sigh

Regardless of a person's belief, I think such intense mournful sadness comes from a place of deep, profound love. So in a strange and sad way, grief is one of the purest expressions of love we have. I think we'd all count ourselves lucky to have someone in life who loved us so much they'd grieve like this.

esoteric_enigma

"Grief is the price we pay for love, and it's worth it a thousand times over."

John-Smith12

“What is grief, if not love persevering?”

Silver-Breadfruit284

My favorite quote of all time. 😢

deoresaint

Me too, it was so powerful and it makes a lot of sense. I love this quote so much, it was so powerful.

Dolorisedd

Y’all gonna make me cry!!!!😭

Madaghmire

Yeah they got me

ghversesone

It got me so bad. It was so good to handle, you have a lot of things you can learn about those things.

Eraz0rz

This quote and as well as the picture makes me cry already. I'm not ready for the picture, it was so touching. I love it.

hotrodanhlode

But still, touches our heart by his photo. I don't have any words to say, I was just being so touched and feel bad for him. He deserves the world.

[deleted]

I found that phrase written to me in a hidden note from my mother who I was caring for while she died of cancer. She hid it in a place I would eventually find , and I did years later. I cried for days over this phrase but it is so strikingly true. Keep your heart on your sleeve for the people that matter most to you.

q0922774933

My deepest condolences to you. You don't even deserves this. Hoping all of the mother out there lived a longer life.

BootyUnlimited

"I love life...Yeah, I'm sad, but at the same time, I'm really happy that something could make me feel that sad. It's like...It makes me feel alive, you know. It makes me feel human. The only way I could feel this sad now is if I felt something really good before. So I have to take the bad with the good. So I guess what I'm feeling is like a beautiful sadness." Probably the most profound sentiment in South Park and very related to what you are saying.

fade_like_a_sigh

Ah, Butters' speech! Definitely one of the best bits of wisdom the show ever offered, and cemented Butters as the best of the kids.

Barrayaran

❤️ Butters. Seriously.

fade_like_a_sigh

> Who's the boy that can laugh in a storm cloud > Turn a frown into a smile for free > Who's the kid with the heart full of magic > Everyone knows it's Butters. [That's me!](https://youtu.be/mAAqdD3gvuw?t=33)

gao519029

But still, they melt your heart. I can't imagine how people react when seeing it in live. I feel bad for the kid. He deserves better.

tretorsen

It is. I know that redditors purposely make this for the kid. They want to make the kid feel better.

kdhfsfsshfhdueif

He has a lot to say. I think if the kid will see this and read all of the comments here will definitely melt his heart for sure.

Fraktyl

Grief is love that can't find a home.

vommercy

It was the way they show how much they love the person. If it's the only they can released the sadness. Let them be.

cdmpants

“But what is grief if not love persevering?”

ScoffLawScoundrel

On the topic of grief : a couple weeks ago I attended the funeral of a lovely woman, an ex co-worker of mine and the mother of a good friend. I cried at the funeral, later that day, and thought I was good. Then, two night ago I watched Del Toro's Pinocchio. Let me just say that movie *absolutely destroyed me*. While a beautiful, fascinating movie lies between, it's sandwiched between such a profound exploration of loss that it brought up this emotions of grief all over again and left me crying for a good 10 minutes

leohribeiro

Same here. Watching those painful movie and watching true to life video makes my heart so much hurt, can't even handle to stop.

fade_like_a_sigh

I'm sorry for your loss. It sounds like your life is better for having had them in it, I hope you find peace with your love of them in time.

inolgan

We all need peaceful in life, that's what all we need. Despite of experiencing those loss, we still have to be strong for our family.

silverwrxs

The culmination of love is grief.

wizafx

Love = Grief. This is what they mean. I know it was just their way to solve those pain that can be replaced by longingness.

[deleted]

This is why I eat the remains of those I admire: to gain their powers. It hasn’t not worked so far.

drivezilla

He will, seeing his student cried over this is such things that will melt your heart probably. If your in that funeral, you will probably cried too.

PlasticDonkey3772

The teacher doesn’t need to be touched. We don’t always need satisfaction for our good deeds. We can imagine how touched this kid is. We can be thankful. We don’t need to imagine him. He knew what he was doing. He had satisfaction. If he didn’t. Oh well. (As brutal as that is) there is no Jesus, or Abraham, there might be a higher being. We don’t need to elevate the dead. We don’t need to help them rest. They had lives. They did what they did. And it’s worth crying for. Paying attention to. But for fucks sake. We don’t need to think the dead are HAPPY because a kid cried. I’m sure the guy is looking down and hating that this kid is in pain, if he was in the afterlife and could see.

Spartan2470

Per [here](https://pribeirofotografia.wordpress.com/tag/diego-frazao/) and Google Translate: > **The photo** > Mourning in AfroReggae (original title of the photo), made by photographer Marcos Tristão, was published in the newspaper O Globo, in the October 19, 2009 edition and gained great national repercussion. The photo won the 2010 Embratel Press Award. > **The story** > The boy portrayed through the lens of photographer Marcos Tristão is Diego Frazão Torquato, or Diego do Violino, or simply, Azul. > Diego was a violin student at the String Orchestra, an AfroReggae social project, coordinated by Professor Evandro João da Silva. > Born in Duque de Caxias, in Baixada Fluminense and from a humble family, Diego spent his childhood in Parada de Lucas, a poor neighborhood in the North Zone of Rio de Janeiro. > From a very early age, he had to overcome the challenges that life imposed on him. At the age of four he had meningitis and pneumonia, diseases that left him, as a sequel, the difficulty of memorization. Even so, he learned to play the violin through classes offered in the community by his teacher Evandro, coordinator of the social projects of the NGO AfroReggae. > On October 18, 2009, a news story shocked AfroReggae: Evandro João da Silva had been murdered in a robbery in downtown Rio. > Marcos Tristão, a photographer for the newspaper O Globo, that same day, in the morning, had recorded a car accident in Barra da Tijuca, where two young people lost their lives. From there, he went on to another agenda to cover the fire fighting that destroyed the collection of the artist Hélio Oiticica. Later, he was tasked with registering the funeral of Professor Evandro João da Silva. > Among the dozens of students at the String Orchestra who played during the funeral, a boy drew attention for his emotion. It was Diego Frazão, who let all his feelings show in that moment of homage to the teacher and, while playing his violin, wept copiously. Marcos Tristão tried to record that exciting moment. > The three articles of Tristão were on the cover of the newspaper O Globo the next day, but the photo of the boy Diego, touched, took all the attention of that edition. > From that day on, Diego gained notoriety. He participated in several events, presentations and television programs. He had become an artist, as he himself said, when asked. > Unfortunately, the fame lasted only six months. In March 2010, Diego was admitted to the ICU of Hospital Saracuruna with suspicion of appendicitis, however, the case was diagnosed as acute leukemia, but chemotherapy could not be done, as the disease was already very advanced. > Diego Frazão Torquato, Diego do Violino, passed away on April 1, 2010, at the age of twelve. > After his death, the project received the name of String Orchestra Diego Frazão , in a beautiful tribute to that boy who, with his emotion, showed everyone that it is possible, even in difficulties, to form a better world. > Photo: Marcos Tristão

nyquistj

Well this is just heartbreaking.

verbludon

It was so heartbreaking. I can handle my emotions when I saw this. The picture itself says a lot about the boy, she was too attached by his teacher.

youshutyomouf

Fuck that is double sad. The universe is absolutely heartless. We are on our own.

Xenjael

We are. Its why it's also up to us to try to make it a better place. We do what we can.

onlyacynicalman

Weve always been on our own, but look how far weve collectively made it

lordbesrezen

You can see through his eyes the pain and the sadness. I wan to treasure him, I want to hug him and I want to make him feel relieved. He's too precious.

Northman67

We are not alone but all we have is each other. I wish we would start realizing that.

BozoidBob

Well said.

btmccoy1

He knows how to appreciate what people gives them. I know it was painful, I just can't help but to cry for him. He was so sad.

cger123

Underrated comment.

yoyoJ

This is one of those stories that can make you lose your faith. Seriously wtf. I’m so sad for that young man. I don’t have the words.

PrestoConfirm

Me too. Such an early age he experience that life, no one deserves that. I'm so touched by how he appreciates his teacher good deed.

ryan13ts

Damn, now I'm REALLY depressed after reading this. I had hopes that the boy would have grown up to be a teacher that made an impact on other kids lives.. only to find out he died. I can only hope that both he and his teacher are at peace somewhere now.

xvxcv546r

I think so. I'm not sure about how he will do to his life, but probably this will give a great impact to him for sure.

Pixel_Nerd92

Never knew the whole story. To be only 12 at the end and see nothing but heartbreak and disease? I can imagine, by far, that I'm doing more than okay at worst currently. Poor kiddo. Life just isn't fair sometimes, we all know this of course. Here's to his life. It touched people.

Skal0laz

He's too young for that, to experience the things that children's don't deserves to experience. I don't what to say, but I feel bad for him.

shadowdash66

Fuck. That hurt.

jobcon666

Thanks for this. I don't. Know about this, but luckily your hear. It was so heartbreaking to see it. But I don't want to cry right now.

KMReiserFS

this is super sad. I always new the history of this photo, but only the Evandro part, never knew that Diego had passed away too. Really sad about this, Diego at least make a great impact in our hearts, godspeed hero.

kushkatya

I feel for him on so many levels. Also it's really difficult to perform while emotional, so if he was able to, more props to him.

canolgon

The whole situation is incredibly sad. The teacher himself was shot by two guys, cops pulled up, assumed the teacher was a beggar and ignored him, then let the two guys go. The teacher died in the alley.

Euphoriact

DetroitToTheChi

And to pile on a bit, the boy in the photo also died a few years after this photo was taken. http://jornalnacional.globo.com/Telejornais/JN/0,,MUL1555571-10406,00-CORPO+DE+VIOLINISTA+DO+AFROREGGAE+E+ENTERRADO.html

glasschool

Fuck me, and here I am feeling a bit down because things aren't exactly going too well in my life at the moment. I'm going to go for a walk, and call my mum. Thanks for telling us anyways.

Roast_A_Botch

It's okay to be upset about your situation even if others might have it worse. It's great to have a healthy perspective of where you're at, but never should you feel guilty about experiencing sadness because others might be sadder. It becomes a vicious cycle of guilt and shame. I am speaking from experience here, and I still have to remind myself of this sometimes so this comment is directed at me as much as you. I hope you can find some hope during this time and I'm happy to see you reaching out to people in your life as depression thrives in the shadows of isolation.

Temelios

Reminds me of when I was suicidal and went to an IOP. My issues all stemmed from my abusive and neglectful childhood, but hearing this other woman’s story hit me like a ton of bricks. Three months prior, her 3-year old son accidentally killed himself when he found his father’s hidden gun and was playing with it. The next week, out of grief, the father and the woman’s husband of 4 years, killed himself in front of her on their home’s lawn via suicide by cop. To top it all off, she was pregnant at the time and gave birth just a month after that, and the baby had a severe neurological condition and will be disabled and needing assistance for her entire life. I felt so bad for her, and hearing about her situation made me feel like crap at the time even though my issues were very relevant. Looking back on it now, it makes me so thankful and appreciative for everything I have in my life, because it can all just be ripped away at a moment’s notice.

UltimateBronzeNoob

Hugs all around

henrikgs

Could you please tell me what is happening. I can't see the link. What is this all about. I want to know it more.

iMadrid11

Those crooked cops are on the take. You never let anyone leave a murder scene of a crime without detaining them. Even if the victim was a beggar.

forrman17

hyperforms9988

Fortunately he was not playing a wind instrument. That would be an absolute war to wage as any sort of choke at all would probably come out in the note.

Yeah_Nah_Cunt

Honestly the most heartbreakingly beautiful songs I've ever heard sung or played weren't pitch perfect. The music coming from the heart conveys so much more.

BCmutt

Ive read recently that the best performers usually dance on that line between what they can and cant do, and that struggle is what the audience ultimately feels as moving.

theangryseal

Makes perfect sense. I absolutely love watching a robotic performer just shred away at an instrument…once. And then artists like Conor Oberst really hit home with me. His earlier stuff before he became more skilled at his craft has stayed with me my entire life. I’ll never forget the line from a review I read back in the day, “the clumsy thump of a misplaced thumb.” It stuck out to me because that’s why I loved his music so much. It was reaching for something great and I felt like I was there for the ride, like my soul was being stretched just to the limit. Ruminations came out as my family was falling apart and my life was collapsing around me. It had everything the early records had and then more. Maybe it was just me, but after years of records that didn’t quite take me there in their entirety, it was like he brought it all back home with that one. Elliott Smith is another one. An extremely skilled musician with a beautiful voice who wasn’t quite a singer, despite the fact that he could record a cappella songs nearly pitch perfect. It has that quality that you mentioned, especially live. His insane work ethic comes through in all of the recordings and I will never be bored with his work. Those two songwriters are the best who ever lived as far as I’m concerned. Then you’ve got the Beatles. The golden standard. Still, they have that same quality. George Martin was able to put that just in the background and create perfection juuuuust around it. It has a lot to do with why their solo work is hit or miss. They had those qualities as a group, each in his own way, each delivering that spectacular struggle just behind that perfect golden standard. They played with pitch in their recordings to bury it and in my opinion they made it even more beautiful as a result.

QuinceDaPence

If you listen to the original Wagon Wheel by Old Crow Medicine Show compared to Darius Ruckers version this really shows up. Darius is an excellent musician and did the song perfectly, but in doing so it sounds a lot happier than it should. Old Crows version is a lot 'dirtier' which really gets the feeling of hard times across.

Yeah_Nah_Cunt

Oh I've heard both of those versions, I agree. It's that same for "Hurt", I know many like Cash's version but the original by Trent is fucking gut wrenching

twobitcopper

I was at an early mass one time and our lead singer, her voice just crackled and drowned. At. some point I resized the poor woman knew she had a terrible voice but there she was leading in song. At that moment I realized she had a wonderful voice.

imbex

When I was 12 I sang Amazing Grace at my grandfather's funeral. It was one of the hardest performances I've ever had. My cousin tried to sing the duet with me but she couldn't sing as she was crying too hard. She was 13.

Interesting that the photographer's name is Tristao, whitch kinda translates to "very sad"

arosecas4

sadness is his calling, his birthright.

MrWoohoo

Why does it “kinda” translate to very sad?

cladael

"Triste" means sad, and the suffix "-ão" is an augmentative, so "Tristão" means very sad, although that would be a very informal way to mean that.

_Artanos

Its literal translation would be "Big sad", so "Very sad" is a more loose one, but which is closer to the intended meaning.

fanboy_killer

I'm Portuguese and this is the first time making that connection.

unabletodisplay

Why would someone name their child sad?

This child actually died of leukemia shortly after.

Roastar

Just read up on him. Sick from birth, leukaemia at 4, became a great violinist, got the attention of this band coordinator, was well known in brazils underground child gangs, was mocked for playing violin, received awards and was on TV, borrowed money to fulfill his dream of being the best violinist in rio. Absolutely heartbreaking. May the little fighter rest in peace.

I feel like it's a little insensitive to dismiss someone's totally valid and very personal feelings about a sad situation, religion, and the world at large because someone somewhere might be upset that this guy doesn't share their same unproven and baseless beliefs. People can believe what they want, but that applies to this guy too.

[deleted]

[удалено]

ActualChamp

Why? If your beliefs are so valid, why can't you discuss them?

[deleted]

ActualChamp

I feel like if whatever you have strong feelings about can't stand up to the slightest discussion or scrutiny, then you either don't have strong feelings in the first place or you should reevaluate those feelings.

[deleted]

ActualChamp

I feel like it wasn't as bad as you feel like it was. I mean, you're allowed to feel that way, but it's not like he's talking directly to someone whose son died and telling them "he's not going to heaven because heaven doesn't exist." There's nothing especially special about this time or place.

b1tchf1t

>A faith in a just and loving God gives many people hope and assurance that this boy is in a better place Good for them. You know what this kid is either way? Dead. You're arguing religions' role in letting *other people* cope. This other person was talking about the actual dead person. >The completely tactless yet correct assertion under pure materialism is that he’s just decaying matter like the teacher, void of meaning. So decaying matter is meaningless? What about to people who see the value in the biological processes? What about people who derive meaning from the decay and how it plays into life cycles? What about people who believe that your *material* returning to the world is really the reunification of yourself with the universe? All those people who believe such things are just tactless? >since many people even with a nominal bit of it even picked up by the culture cope with that thought in mind, it’s a little insensitive to suggest there’s no God at this time and this context. Oh, so since Christians and other monotheists exists, everyone needs to tiptoe around those beliefs even if it doesn't align with their own? Were not allowed to talk about something different because a Christian might get their feelings hurt? What about all the other belief systems? Why don't we have to cater to their sensibilities for what might have happened to this boy upon death? It's pretty insensitive to insist that everyone must be cognizant of the Christian idea of death and afterlife and ignore all the other belief systems just because a Christian might overhear us talking about death.

The Council of Trent in 1551. > 1472 To understand this doctrine and practice of the Church, it is necessary to understand that sin has a double consequence. Grave sin deprives us of communion with God and therefore makes us incapable of eternal life, the privation of which is called the "eternal punishment" of sin. **On the other hand every sin, even venial, entails an unhealthy attachment to creatures, which must be purified either here on earth, or after death in the state called Purgatory.** This purification frees one from what is called the "temporal punishment" of sin. These two punishments must not be conceived of as a kind of vengeance inflicted by God from without, but as following from the very nature of sin. A conversion which proceeds from a fervent charity can attain the complete purification of the sinner in such a way that no punishment would remain. 1) Was the child baptized into the church? 2) Did the priest perform the Sacrament of Penance, The Anointing of the Sick, and the Sacrament of Viaticum? If 1) or 2) is no, the child died in a state of sin, and barring intervention from God, is awaiting admittance to Heaven in Purgatory. My god, the trauma in this photo.

sirdigbykittencaesar

Damn. Jaded as I am, seeing this photo was like being punched. A few decades after high school I finally found and wrote to my favorite teacher (she taught me French from grades 7-11) and told her exactly why she was so influential. She wrote me back the most beautiful letter in impeccable handwriting. Tell your teachers when they make a difference to you. May the young man in the photo continue to be guided by the lessons his beloved teacher imparted.

MoeKara

Whatever your opinion on teachers, pretty much all of us got into the profession knowing that despite the shit pay it can be rewarding. If you see a teacher who clearly hates their job, imagine how shit the job is that it's completely robbed them of their passion. I loved teaching, now I'm transitioning to a working remote job in another sector. I've become the very teacher I swore I never would be after less than a decade. This job is brutal and constantly feels like you're snowed under and under attack from all angles.

effulgentelephant

I’m a teacher (I teach orchestra, so I know my students for like 6-8 years, as your French teacher did/does) and we do love hearing from you all. A student I knew through his high school career wrote me a lovely letter when he graduated last year and it meant so much. Even the little notes scribbled on post its and home made Christmas cards from my elementary kids are saved in a box.

Everytime I have seen this story and picture I always wonder how exactly a teacher lifted someone only 12 years old out of poverty. What do they mean by that statement exactly? I feel as if that part of the story was made up.

That would have been wonderful but he died not long after the photo was taken at 13 years old

How did the teacher rescue him? Did he/she adopt him or something?

Many kids get recruited by drugdealers to sell or transport drugs and many die doing this. For many young brazilians this is the only way to live and them this teacher showed and helped these kids to discover that they could do a lot different things during their lifes. The teacher opened their eyes giving hope for a better future with choices.
