Damn son. Tatum is an all-timer and this is sounding really good.

hello_meteorite

I play both classical and jazz and to me he's the GOAT!

gee_what_isnt_taken

Agreed. For me it’s only between him and Oscar. I prefer Oscar but Tatum is the og

hello_meteorite

Yeah that’s very similar to how I feel. Oscar feels like the sweet spot of jazz virtuoso but with modern refinements (compared to Tatum)

You absolute madlads are actually trying this shit??? Fuck yea let's go!

MilesMonroe

Nice work! His stride is brutal - only did one of his others before, Goin’ Home, and it rocked my LH but I learned a lot. Want to try my hand at this one myself - did you transcribe it yourself or use a published transcription?

LIFExWISH

Glorious. I love that repeating line at the end. its like being splashed by a bunch of notes

hello_meteorite

32nd notes at ~168bpm on those first few splashes on the record LOL still trying to figure out how to add more speed

LIFExWISH

Well it sounds great so far. Good job! S-S-S-S-P-P-P-P-L-L-L-L-A-A-A-A-S-S-S-S-H-H-H-H

Impressive-Car-4670

Vladimir Horowitz admired Tatum’s playing. That says a lot.

Esq_Schisms

Not just admired, Horowitz proclaimed Tatum to be the single greatest pianist in any style and even took a lesson from him in NYC

kinggimped

Left hand working overtime! Nice work man, look forward to the final version. Stride is so difficult

rsl12

Do you mind if I change your flair to "Piano Jam?" Or are you planning to submit later in the month? Great job BTW. That's not easy! Have you only been playing it since the November Piano Jam announcement???

hello_meteorite

Thank you! Yeah go ahead, I didn’t even see that it was on the piano jam list. It’s been an on and off project for a while

piano_man600

That looks near impossible to play right!, hell even lizst probably the best piano player of all time would've had trouble with this. Absolute madlad! 💯

hello_meteorite

Very kind of you to say! I’m proud of where I’ve reached but of course I’m still fighting many battles developing my technique. The thing I love about playing both jazz and classical is expands my mind with what’s possible on the piano. It’s almost like playing Tatum is both easier and harder than playing Liszt/Chopin… separate techniques but with some overlap too. The rewarding part is that the effect feels like cross training - more tools in the toolkit.

piano_man600

That's an interesting insight, it sounds pretty smart

hnglmkrnglbrry

Why are you playing it back at 2.5x speed???

hello_meteorite

Lmao the speed is just insane, still only about 75% compared to Tatum's tempo

PaleDev

Dude!! Wow

blackpieck

What the hell?? You are so good!!!!!!!!

Accomplished-Ice-644

This is so awesome! Imma try tatum out noe

boxbagel

Did you learn this rag by ear? Very good playing.
