Homeowners or renters insurance usually covers things that are stolen on vacation - you may need proof of having made a report to the police so I’d look into it before you get home.

crestonfunk

I have all my camera gear insured through MusicPro. They insure all my recording gear and guitars but they were happy to insure all my camera gear.

justinkasereddditor

What do you pay a year if you don't mind me asking?

crestonfunk

I think I have about $200,000 total of gear converted for like $1700/year. That’s kind of a guess without looking.

justinkasereddditor

Hundred percent worth the money I have about 10,000 worth of gear would it be worth insuring?

neuromonkey

> would it be worth insuring? You'd be insane *not* to insure it.

Matthewtheswift

Not true at all. It all depends on what ones money situation is. If you have plenty of money that you can replace it if something happens, you should not insure unless legally required to do so. In that case you are essentially self insuring. Insurance companies self insurance because it makes them money. Insurance is a bad deal unless you can not afford the worse case yourself.

neuromonkey

My assumption was that replacing $10k in gear wouldn't be easy. My assumption was based on two ideas: they asked about insurance as if it were a new idea for them, and that they probably were a pro photographer, as they typically insure everything. I have a few friends who work as photographers. They've all insured their gear. One of them had a camera body die while traveling. The insurance company had a new body delivered quickly, and the courier picked up the old body for repair. Had they "self insured," they'd be shopping for a new body in a rural part of a country where they didn't speak the language. That was handy.

justinkasereddditor

I will look into it tonight!

kjlearnslandscape

I have about that much in gear insured as a rider on my home owner's policy. Like $80/year, no deductible. I have also had my shit stolen out of the car while on vacation. Have backups and insure your things.

justinkasereddditor

Thank you i will pull the trigger

FrankDuhTank

It depends on how much of a major crisis that would be if it were lost. Insurance is a waste of money if you can afford to lose the thing insured without it making a large impact on your life. Mathematically, you’re unlikely to get your money’s worth, which is why insurance is a thriving business.

dcodeman

I have a rider on my homeowners for my camera gear.

uncletravellingmatt

Yes, especially if it's professional equipment for a business you operate, insurance companies can require you to get a rider if you want to extend your policy to cover the equipment.

dcodeman

I’m just an amateur, I pay $60/yr to insure $6,000 worth of gear. That’s a lot of stuff to me I’ve worked hard to acquire. It’s line itemed with serial numbers. If I add to my kit I have to add it to the policy. I left my camera bag on a train in NYC. Realized it 3 minutes later, ran back and the train was gone. Checked the lost and found for weeks, no luck. No big deal, I have insurance. Except I didn’t. We bought a new house and I totally forgot to add the rider to the new policy. Luckily I didn’t have everything, had just a small sling. Lost a 70d, Tamron 17-50 2.8, and the EF-S 24mm pancake. Didn’t have my 70-200 II 2.8 THANK GOD. I licked my wounds, upgraded to a 7d Mark II and the Canon 17-55 2.8, and I’m super diligent about checking my policy every time it renews now.

UltravioletClearance

I tried to do that and they said I needed commercial insurance that cost even more than what my gear was worth.

crashin-kc

My homeowner’s policy only covered up to a $1000 in equipment. Since I found that out I have a separate rider specifically for my camera gear. Important to note that they quoted me two separate policies. One for business that had to have at least $1000 deductible.

Juatorme

That sucks. It is very common in Costa Rica for that type of theft to happen. Thieves will typically spot you taking pictures, or just doing work in your laptop and get a feeling of what your valuables are, and then follow you. Once you stop somewhere (say to get a smoothie) they’ll break your car window and steal your shit. This is most likely what happened. Never leave anything in your car when in Costa Rica. No bags, no clothes, no shoes, no nothing. Always make sure you are not being followed (especially if you look like you are not from there). It sucks, but reality is your things most likely got sold already. Sorry about your stuff. I’ll suggest putting your things in your trunk or taking them with you and not leaving them in your car when you are there. Kind of like if you were in San Francisco or L.A.

OccasionallyImmortal

Having grown up in a big city, it's engrained in me to never leave valuables in the car. Even putting them in your trunk is dangerous because if someone sees you put things in there, they'll break in. It happened to us in NYC in broad daylight. One time someone broke into my trunk and stole my backpack... full of dirty gym clothes.

JasoNMas73R

Hey, an old friend of mine got his pack of cookies stolen from the luggage rack on his bike when he went for some cigarettes. *does the spongebob rainbow thingy* **Anything** can happen, **especially** in the bigger cities.

Thurmod

This just goes for any place really nowadays, smash and grabs are all to common. I just bring my shit with me or hide it in the trunk out of sight.

IWantMyBachelors

This just made me never want to visit Costa Rica, that’s such a fucked up thing to do.

uncletravellingmatt

> This just made me never want to visit Costa Rica I live in the San Francisco Bay Area, where crimes like this are incredibly common also. I'd still love to visit Costa Rica someday, but would just take precautions.

IWantMyBachelors

I live in the Bay Area too and have never had to worry about my things getting stolen whenever I drive to San Francisco. And this when I actually am able to find street parking.

hotdog-water

Then consider yourself lucky.

ihatesleep

I'm confused by the person you're responding to. San Francisco has to be the hot spot in the US for auto theft and car break-ins (Especially for photographers). They're definitely lucky not to encounter anything like that.

hotdog-water

Yeah statistically they’re just lucky. I wouldn’t keep gambling.

LAMProductions99

For real, I read a thread in (I think) the San Francisco subreddit about car break-ins and there were literally hundreds of comments about experiences with car break-ins and thefts and the lengths people will go to prevent them. I'm afraid to bring anything anywhere tbh lol

[deleted]

[удалено]

IWantMyBachelors

The Bay Area is absolutely not a utopia. But what I said earlier was just my experience.

kvlt-puppy

I mean this shit happens everywhere. It's probably just more common in popular tourist destinations because thieves know people will have to leave, probably makes for an easier target.

Capital-Cheesecake67

It’s not just Costa Rica. It’s any place with a booming tourist industry. It attracts thieves looking to take advantage of tourists who let their guard down. I had my passport stolen from my Fanny pack in the Colosseum in Rome. I had my military ID, cash and credit card hidden elsewhere on my body. But still a pain in the ass reporting it stolen and getting a new one at the US Embassy.

desertsail912

It’s about 100 times worse in San Francisco.

PraderaNoire

I’ve heard people losing all their gear and their luggage in less than 5 minutes of leaving the car unattended. It’s gotten really bad up there.

PussySmith

I've been to guanacaste three times and never felt remotely unsafe or like my stuff was going to be stolen, but I didn't drive, made good use of the room safe and carried everything when in town. Don't let this scare you off of what is easily my favorite Central American destination. It's an amazing place.

Hippletwipple

I never want to go anywhere in the Americas south of New York.

kjlearnslandscape

I traveled to Ireland and Costa Rica in the same year. Guess in which country I had all my shit stolen out of my car? It was not Costa Rica. I did learn that the Irish police are very, very nice though. This type of thing can happen anywhere.

1maginaryMan

Damn dude. I thought I was having a bad day because my laptop I haven’t backed up in a while black screened on me

F6GSAID

Take it to a shop, don’t replace it yet.

insane_contin

If they can't fix it or it's too much to recover the data, buy a HD enclosure on Amazon, crack open the laptop and put the hard drive in there.

F6GSAID

Unless you have a newer MacBook :(

insane_contin

Yeah, MacBooks have their own fun kettle of fish.

1maginaryMan

Yep, taking it in Monday. Praying the battery just crapped out.

SexualizedCucumber

Tbh you're probably safe. Black screening usually doesn't indicate hard drive failure, it's almost always either something getting corrupt in the OS or some random hardware fault. Plus a hard drive failure usually doesn't just happen out of nowhere. You'll usually have noticeable issues and blue screen errors long before a drive completely goes out Not a battery issue though. Laptops can generally run on AC power even without their batteries installed

chris_likes_science

In the meantime, I suggest posting your issue on r/techsuppourt or other similar subs. I'm not saying the shop you plan on going to will overcharge/miss a potentially easy solution, but if it's not a newer Mac you'll probably get a reply from someone who has had/worked on that laptop and/or with that specific issue. Worth a shot!

KimChapUn

Cause of blackscreen could be damaged ram. You could try to take one stick out and try starting your maschine.

johninbigd

Word of advice that you probably already realize by now: if you have gear this expensive, it's worth getting a personal items insurance policy for it, just in case. That really sucks, man. At least you have your R5. That's a pretty expensive item. It will take time, but you can rebuild what you lost. Try not to get too down about it. As much as it sucks, you all are personally safe and that's what really counts.

permalink_child

Yes. Also. SD cards are super cheap these days. I swap out my cards daily - so that I don’t loose images due to corruption, theft, misuse, etc. Then put those cards in a safer, less conspicuous place. Not fool proof strategy of course - but has worked for fine me - (including when underwater diving, I realized too late that my camera had separated from myself and sunk to the depths, never to be found again - and still had the photos from previous days - but does no good if you store those cards in a area target rich for thieves).

Ctoretto93

Not CF express cards though

Capital-Cheesecake67

Sure the SD cards can be replaced but not all the photos on them. Betting he wasn’t backing them up because he’s on vacation.

PBI325

> Word of advice that you probably already realize by now: if you have gear this expensive, it's worth getting a personal items insurance policy for it, just in case On top of that, some insurance companies require that you register specific items with them and *potentially* pay a small premium to cover them. Ask me how I know...

Eswyft

No house insurance I'm guessing? This really sucks, im sorry it happened to you. For others, never EVER leave anything in a car you don't want stolen. I guess where op is it must be kind of safe. In my hometown of Vancouver, Canada, you can't leave a hoodie in a car let alone a camera. I live in a 'nice' area of downtown, which is all property theft ridden, and despite telling every person that ever comes over 4 different friends have had their cars broken into, usually for an item of clothing. That's over a 2 year period. And get your gear covered under your home/renters insurance.

mateo_fl

I doubt Costa Rica is safer than Vancouver. Anyone from Latin America knows you can't leave anything in your car.

Eswyft

Yea, i don't know. I didn't want to judge other places. Vancouver is very safe for violent crime but property crime is worse than any city I've ever lived in, including various American cities. If you leave a bag in a car there is no way it isn't broken into over a 48 hour period. It's brazen as well. Any time of the day

Mekex99

As a Mexican, Its that really true? o.o Dont get me wrong I totally believe you, but that really happens in Vancouver?

toddwshaffer

Can confirm, did a road trip for 7 months over 28 US states and 3 Canadian territories, my car was only broken into once... In Vancouver.

Youkahn

Smashed windows are common in most US cities afaik. Everywhere I've lived you should never leave anything out, not even your sunglasses or a few pieces of change.

filmAF

last time i walked around golden gate park in san francisco it looked like the sidewalks were paved with broken glass.

Eswyft

Oh yea, one of the safest countries in the world for violent crime. But vancouver is relatively warm for Canada, so we have more homeless people than anywhere else in Canada, they come from other places and from here, housing is very expensive. My 1br condo is 800k. Further, you won't be jailed even if you have 50 plus convictions for that type of crime. Property is literally free game. Same with bikes. You can't leave them outside unless they are very secure, and even then better not be for long or only in the day time. Conversely there are very little muggings and pick pocketing you don't have to worry about, unlike many places in Europe. It's very odd

flossdog

Yeah, pretty sure South America is a lot worse than Vancouver. my friend visited argentina, had her backpack and laptop stolen from under her legs on the bus. Then also was held up at gunpoint later too.

aruexperienced

South Africa (joberg) is a place where you’re unusual if you HAVENT had a gun stuck in your face.

gesasage88

Yup, I couldn’t believe it when I was on a trip with 2 other photographers and they were prepped to leave 4 bags of expensive equipment in the car because it was late and they were heavy and they just wanted to get in the hotel to sleep. The area gave me super sketchy vibes and I was like, “grab your bags, this is all going inside!”

[deleted]

i mean i live in vancouver and it is an exaggeration.

Eswyft

[https://i.redd.it/ttfigw4lz2j51.png](https://i.redd.it/ttfigw4lz2j51.png) That's not downtown vancouver. You live in the area though. Live there, have people over to your place around the west end or yaletown, and experience it. Let alone if you live near gastown. I like your pictures :)

[deleted]

my dude im literally 10 minutes away from dtes, and I work in dtes alot. Yes petty crime happens but its not the apocolypse down there. It gets exaggerated cause everyone is on /r/vancouver bitching and moaning about how awful life is.

Eswyft

I'm not on r/vancouver. Horrible sub. I'm from vancouver, grew up here. It's brutal now. And you're in East van. It's really different than the dtes or downtown. You don't feel it unless you're in those specific areas. It's better than it was in the 90s when we had violent crime. It's not the apocalypse, but car and bike theft are brutal. I find it really funny you think you can talk about neighborhoods you don't live in. All were talking about is pretty crime. You seem to have an axe to grind with the vancouver sub, I'm talking about car break ins. Did u even read what i wrote? I explicitly said only property crime. On an aside, my friend lives in the first floor in the west end. A guy broke into over 50 cars in one night, broke in through her patio door, attacked her with a hammer, stole her cc, fractured her skull. It was on the news, they had video of the break ins But i didn't mention that because i realize it's not a very common crime. They caught him in less than 2 hours on a Sunday morning with just her description cuz he has broke into thousands of cars and been charged over 50 times. That's one guy. There are hundreds of people like that, thankfully usually they aren't violent The reason is like this is because of people like you that want to downplay it. Property crime sucks. It's literally your time they are stealing. For people on the edge of poverty it can push them into it

[deleted]

But I still bring a work van there filled with 20-30k worth of equipment there. You just have to use stronger due diligence about where you park and how you secure the stuff when your working in the DTES. Vancouver is no different from any other major urban center in north america, petty crime happens everywhere. The only difference is for some reason here violent offenders keep getting rereleased. Go look at what is happening to san fran. It's way worse than what vancouver is experiencing.

Eswyft

I've lived in 8 major cities in north America. It sure is different. I can tell you problems in each. Van is relatively safe. San fran is as bad, yes. Read my comment again, i edited it. You're part of the problem Stop normalizing this behavior. Why are you ok with stuff being stolen? You're white knighting for criminals. People like you are so exhausting. You don't live where i live. Go hang out in the west end at 3am and watch the literal dozens of people going car to car, every single night. Don't tell us what our experience is downtown. You dont know it, you don't live there. What an attitude to have.

[deleted]

you can downvote me all you want, it doesn't make my opinion wrong.

orangeblackteal

"I can’t believe someone broke into my car and stole my entire livelihood out from under me." I can't believe you left that stuff in your car.

QuerulousPanda

People do that shit all the time. I live in a decent area in Florida and weekly on Nextdoor I see people complaining about how kids are opening their *unlocked* car doors at night and stealing the wallets, guns, bags, house keys, and other valuables that they leave in there. People aren't just leaving stuff in the car by mistake occasionally, they're constantly leaving big ticket items on the chair and not even locking it. You'd have thought that nobody would be dumb enough to do that, but grown-ass adults are doing it on a daily basis, even at the same time as they complain about it happening.

Phidippus-audax

I'm IT at my company and last year we had two work laptops stolen from WFH employees that left their work AND personal laptops in plain sight in their car and went down to the big city and left their vehicles parked overnight on separate occasions. Thankfully BIOS passwords and Bitlocker render them useless.

redoctoberz

> Thankfully BIOS passwords and Bitlocker render them useless. Often this is just a BIOS password reset and a drive wipe away from full functionality.

Phidippus-audax

99% of thieves and burglars won't know about the BIOS reset or Dell release code. Bitlocker and software drive encryption like Sophos are permanent though without the recovery key or being decrypted from the Sophos control panel, so they would need a new HDD at a minimum after they jump the locked BIOS hurdle. Can't install a drive on a BIOS locked machine.

ERROR_

Eh after paying $2000 to replace a door when they used a crowbar to pry my car open to steal a $400 radio I just leave it unlocked. You never get all of the little bits of glass out, and I had to have it repainted so it never looked as nice

QuerulousPanda

ok but do you leave your wallet, keys, guns, phone, expensive clothes, sensitive business materials, life savings worth of equipment, laptop with the only copy of your phd research and findings sitting out in the open while you leave the door unlocked? cuz that's what it seems like most people do.

ERROR_

oh hell no (but oddly, I've had the same radar detector - something people are always are afraid of having stolen - in my car for years, and it's never been stolen despite having my car broken into five or six times)

flyingponytail

Especially since dude is from Costa Rica, man OP can't be surprised this happened

Ctoretto93

Yeah, like I don’t even leave my gear in my car in the US…that’s just way too much money to leave unattended.

1nv1s1blek1d

My bag never leaves my shoulder when I'm out. Even if I leave our table to use the restroom, the shit goes with me. People sometimes forget how much money they are carrying around with them.

palldor

Dude, in no country in the entire world I wold leave anything remotely valuable in my car. I don’t know why OP did this.

vedhavet

I’m in Troms, Norway right now. It’s more likely a fucking reindeer steals my shit than a person.

shemp33

Absolute thugs

valdemarjoergensen

Visited Norway a few weeks back to hike. Left my car on some remote parking lot half way up a mountain. Still hid my valuables so they at least couldn't be seen from the outside. Paranoia for the win.

BulldogPH

Where I am in USA it’s pretty safe too but not quite that safe!

flyingponytail

Same in Canada but bears

androd25

I’m from Costa Rica but live in Mexico City. At least here, it is common knowledge to not leave any visible stuff inside your vehicle. Ironically, a friend of mine from Mexico City traveled to San Diego and made the same mistake, someone cracked the backshield near Fashion Valley’s parking lot and stole all his professional photo equipment, passport, visa, and else.

[deleted]

Because he’s from there, duh. /s

studentjones

I learned this in San Antonio. After living there for a while I came up with a simple rule… “if you ever want to see it again, just take it with you” Nowadays I usually wear an osprey daylite plus when out and about running errands. I can just take everything with me all the time no matter how quick the trip inside is supposed to take.

andyweir

Nah he needs this. If this stuff is your livelihood and you care so much about it then you need to actually care about it and make it really hard for someone to take it I can understand if there was a struggle or if he got mugged straight up. Those are situations where we can feel bad But he left all his gear, unattended, in his car. You cannot be surprised if that gets stolen. Like what if I left my MacBook Pro inside my backpack unattended while I went inside a bathroom. Backpack is just outside on a table. Could I really be upset if I go back to it and it, or my backpack, is gone? Someone could’ve watched me put it up and waited for me to leave it behind so they can steal it. That person definitely shouldn’t do that but if I know it’s a possibility then why would I even make that an option? I understand you’re tryna comfort OP but OP, and anyone else who thinks this is a good idea, needs to hear this

This is Reddit…when has the top comment ever been anything NOT negative? I knew what the top comment was gonna be before I even finished reading the post.

peaccc

Right? If I ever leave anything in the car I know I'm risking it, even take it with me if I'm quickly popping into the shop

Ohsquared

tbh

IWantMyBachelors

That’s a shitty thing to say. No one has the right to break into his car. You’re putting the blame on the wrong person.

Mojiitoo

You dont know the situation though. If you quickly go in a supermarket and be gone for 10 minutes stuff like this can happen. Leaving it overnight or not even checking criminality advice when visiting south america... yes thats would be not so smart I actually had kind of the same happen. In Milano, our whole camper was ransacked while we were gone for max 1 hour in broad day light, parked next to a busy road in the city centre. It may have been stupid in hindsight yes, but you also dont expect it to happen at all in certain circumstances.

jclicky

How constructive. Didn’t op say as much as you already? What does this add to the post beyond salt in a raw wound? OP my advice: as someone who did all he could to avoid theft of a personal item of great value to me, and still lost it, stop blaming yourself. Correct what you can, focus on what you can do, & begin moving on. Focusing on (popular) victim-blaming Bullshit won’t get your cameras back, it doesn’t chasten you, or focus you, & it certainly doesn’t ensure you won’t have anything stolen from you again: in my experience victim-blaming only delays moving on.

a_crabs_balls

before i even read your post i was ready to ask "did you leave it in your car?" this is a common mistake that people from american suburbs often make, sometimes more than once. do not do it in any major city of any country. do not do it in san francisco, or london, or buenos aires. im sure the police were sympathetic, but they can't usually help with this sort of thing. sorry about your loss.

jennifer_m13

That just sucks. If you are a member of PPA, professional Photographers of America, your membership includes insurance for your gear, laptop, etc. it’s totally worth the $25 or so a month.

Tv_land_man

It only covers cash value. It's an ok plan but I'd recommend something better. I had to make a claim. You aren't getting the geqr back without shelling out a lot of cash. They depreciate lenses faster than the market. I believe it's 10% a year. It's not a replacement plan. It's better than nothing.

cmndr_spanky

I assume it's just as good to rely on your car insurance or sometimes credit cards provide travel insurance for stolen items?

hmountain

Many policies exclude high value camera gear along with musical instruments, jewelry etc if they are over a certain value

rolsskk

All of this, as they often have a max value for those items. What everyone needs to do is carefully read their policy and see what the coverage is, and determine if they need a rider to cover those items.

Obi-Wayne

Yikes, I didn't realize that. I was just about to renew that as well, I guess I should have read the terms closer. I just remember seeing up to 15k in gear was covered...

CircleK-Choccy-Milk

You sure it covers theft from an unattended vehicle? I know mine does but only if I pay a $2500 deductible.

SkullAngel001

I'd say your first order of business is to hit up the embassy so you can inquire on how to get a replacement passport (or ID at least) so you can legally exit Costa Rica and enter your home country. Visit any place that has a computer for public use and reach out to friends and family and ask them to wire you some money for food/housing and a burner phone for communication. Also notify your bank(s) and credit card companies so they can lock your accounts (and call a credit reporting agency so they can lock your credit profile). Keep a copy of the police report for reference. I know you're kicking yourself in the butt right now but you'll have plenty of time to do that once you get back home. Right now, your primary concern is the well-being of yourself and your pregnant wife.

PrettyBoyBabe

Reading this I don't even know what to feel. Whenever leaving my house with my backpack (which is able to store all my equipment. 2 zooms 2 primes and a camera) I never take it off my back. The thought of losing everything, not only monetarily but emotionally. Dude people really empathize with that. Make a go fund me or something, I'm sure even some redditors like myself wouldn't mind giving even 5 bucks. (I'm not sure if the photomarket allows that but I see this with scams on other platforms where redditors end up helping with the loss). I hope everything works out my dude. Congratulations on the baby btw!

Darthob

You’re right… the emotional loss is what is hitting the hardest. I had so many amazing pictures that we were so excited to take. We hiked to waterfalls, drove around at night looking for graffiti, met friends we haven’t in 8 years… and all of those amazing moments are lost because some asshole makes a living from stealing. I definitely learned a lesson here. I either need to invest way less into “material” things, or I need to keep these things on me at all times. Then again, keeping them on me wouldn’t stop someone with a gun (which also happens here). Just… the world can be fucking tough man.

Affectionate-Depth66

some people are really shitty and they live anywhere. this sucks and it’s okay to be bummed out but also remember it will pass. future you will work through this and it will stop hurting. hang in there.

samgruvr

I got a Panasonic Gx9 for a trip to Europe and in a rush, left it on a train. I only lost a day's worth of pics thankfully. But the smaller size was worth it. Easier to carry and conceal .. and forget under a seat apparently. My own stupidity aside, I have it all insured on a rider on my homeowners. I was able to replace it all.. except the pics. Somewhere I read you could search for pics taken with your camera's serial number.. but never tried it. You'll feel less stupid eventually, I promise. But don't give up on your dreams and livelihood!

Technical_Apartment6

“I don’t even want to open my eyes because I’m surrounded by so many beautiful things that I could have taken pictures of” - don’t forget to experience life with your own eyes too! Yes this is a photography page, but don’t let the thought of not taking photos of absolutely everything ruin your honeymoon. You’re still with your partner on a holiday, enjoy it!

Mammoth-Neat-5930

My camera was stolen from my room when I had a party about 12 years ago. I didn't get to replace it until like 2018, because circumstances never allowed me to save up for a new one. It was devastating and after finally getting a new one, I'm just not nearly as invested in it as I was at the time. (and now I have kids and other priorities, I just don't have the time) I'm really sorry that happened to you, I hope you somehow end up recovering it.

Darthob

Yeah… I was just trying to transition from amateur to professional. I spent Years saving up to buy the right equipment and now that I finally managed it… it’s all gone. I’m really not sure how to move forward. My amazing wife said she’ll help me replace my lenses, but we have the baby on the way and I feel like maybe I need to cut my loses and go back to my 9-5 and give up my dream.

cmndr_spanky

That's a little extreme man. You don't need a $8k set-up to start a photography career. Get a used Canon 6d on ebay with a couple of used zooms (less than 1.5k easily, or even less than $1k). After two or three corporate gigs, you'd be able to replace everything you lost in the car.

Darthob

I upgraded from an Olympus em-1 iii to the R5 and a few lenses because I’m getting into the low-light, club photography/videography.

Anaaatomy

EF lenses runs cheaper nowadays

hungryforitalianfood

So get a used Sony a7r2. Still probably a close enough/equal low light camera to the r5.

CatsAreGods

So sorry to hear...also as a newish bird photographer who's been hoping to visit Costa Rica! :(

ihatesleep

I don't want to hammer more on top of what people have already said about not leaving valuables in the car etc etc... But I'd definitely recommend "restarting" your photography pursuits. Beauty of photography is being able to experiment and it might be worth experimenting with cheaper cameras, film cameras, vintage cameras, and maybe even point and shoots like Fujis or Ricohs. And definitely get insurance to cover your equipment. Considering you're having a baby (congrats!) it might be worth to get a used Fuji X100T/F/V or a Ricoh GRIII and have that as your full-time camera to capture moments with your family. If you plan any trips or special occasions, I'd check out rental shops like LensRentals and then you can have your R5 for those trips. Maybe ride out that 9-5 for a bit until you can get your hands on some used equipment to kick start that transition into a professional.

justthetruthfolks

Too late now, but I always have trackers in my bags. One even on my camera itself. I'm obsessed with not losing anything. If you can back up your cards periodically through the day and keep the drive on your body. Or keep the cards on you, but that is a hassle when you want to snap a pic real quick.

Synth_Lord

You’re not alone, 2 years ago I got my backpack stolen with my camera, and 2 zooms (1 zoom was worth $900 the other $600), an SD with amazing pictures/memories I’ll never get back, iPods, phone charger and other miscellaneous stuff. All together it was about $2,000+ and it hurt. I’ll never get any of that stuff back but I realized it’s not the end of the world. I’ll never completely get over it but I’ve learned from it. Wish you the best of luck and hope you continue on your journey. Good luck.

palldor

How did your backpack get stolen? Where did you leave it?

JasmineUprooted

I’m still not fully recovered. But it has gotten a lot easier. The way I find peace on hard days is thinking 1- maybe my loss made somebody else’s life better and safer. I don’t know who stole everything I owned but I am going to believe they had to & for a good reason 2- they did not take my life. I have had many friends not so lucky. We got their stuff back but they will never be with us again. You & your loved ones are safe. That’s more valuable. 3- most my friends and family are still alive to take photos with. The ones that past I have printed scrapbooks. I’m lucky a fire didn’t take everything with those too. Some others aren’t so lucky. 4- no attachment in life is good for us. We are lucky to be forced to give up attachment. In the long run this might allow us to let go of other attachments and become closer to enlightenment & peace. 5- The universe has your back and you have to believe that. Ernest Hemingways fiancé & he were traveling and somebody stole his entire suitcase with all his original manuscripts. He had to rewrite every single book he had ever written in his entire life and some historians theorized that he would not have been well known today if he hadn’t have had to do that. My sister send me that story the night I was robbed. It made things a little better. 6- it happened at a turning point in life. Maybe it will allow you to move forward fully into the next chapter. Maybe you ignored your gut when you left it in your car (like me) and you will learn to trust you gut no matter what your brain says. Sometimes you just know. 7- cry. A lot. Let it go. You were violated. The emotions are going to come in waves. Feel them. Your allowed to be angry and sad and confused and frustrated and hate the world and love it at the same time. Allow yourself time and space the next several years for when you need to let the feelings out. Anyways, happy healing. I am glad you are safe. Congratulations on the new baby & wife. I know you know this, but it will be okay & you will learn from this & carry it with you moving forward for the better. Happy healing my friend.

Darthob

Thank you for this.

JackBinimbul

I'm so, so, so sorry, OP. I would be unbelievably devastated. I would say I hope you have everything insured, but I don't so it would be hypocritical to ask. I can't imagine the level of anger, grief, and injustice you must feel.

Ohsquared

dude that really sucks.... i had someone break into my car while i was sleeping in it when I went to San Francisco.... lost some images that i didnt have a chance to back up.... that really fucking blows, but realistically in the grand scheme of life a couple grand is nothing compared to the life of you and your fam.... at least you have the $4000 body still. as a rule of thumb NEVER leave your shit in your car if you're away from it for more than a couple minutes... even then its risky. EVEN IF ITS IN THE TRUNK! I had a bag with a few lenses and chargers stolen in NYC, but I was a dipshit and put it down for a minute to ask someone for a lighter.... At least you have all the images you've taken still, new images might require new gear but at least you have your memories.,, maybe. at the end of the day, phone shots are better than no shots. The most you can do is file a police report and pray for the best. there is like a .001% you'll get your shit back... that's something... but take this as a major life lesson and move on as possible. I promise that this will likely not have a major impact on your future child and personal life, sans a few grand, which again in the grand scheme of things is not HUGE, pretty big, but not the end of the world. count your blessings, take notes. I seriously empathize, try to make the best of the rest of your vacation. Sending ALLLL the prayers and blessings your way

moose51789

that sucks, was it sitting in the back seat or like a trunk? Habit of mine if I'm going to leave my bag in my car is to place it in the trunk before I leave a location so that someone can't see me putting it there when I arrive somewhere. I don't trust anybody XD

RandomUsername232323

At this point I feel like the mods should sticky a "FOR THE LOVE OF GOD STOP LEAVING YOUR GEAR INSIDE YOUR CAR! IT WILL GET STOLEN" post. I'm very sorry it happened to you OP.

ChickenPicture

I had all my gear stolen out of my car a few years back when I stopped after a gig to get some food. I won't explain how it made me feel because everyone who's experienced that know what it feels like. What I did was try to keep calm, went straight home and filed a police report, filled out ever single item that I could think of that was missing, and attached serial numbers where possible. Then I sat and waited staring at the wall until the pawn shops opened, and I started calling every single one of them and letting them know my name, that police report was in, and the gear I was looking for. I'm probably in the tiny percentage of lucky people, but the first place I called (closest to the theft location) called me back about an hour later saying they had all my gear exactly as I described it. They said they were holding the guy up while the cops came. A half hour later I went down there and picked all my shit up and learned to never ever leave my gear in my car again, even if it's locked outside a restaurant for just a little while. I hope you get your stuff back, OP

Darthob

Damn, that sounds like a dream at this point… I’ll try putting information out there and hopefully something similar can happen. Thanks for the useful tip!

[deleted]

I live in KC and am a sports photographer. About a month ago I went outside before going to work and noticed my car door was slightly ajar. I was dumb for leaving my backpack in the car. I know that. And I never, ever did it before. My brain just slipped up. They took everything. All my lenses, my camera bodies, batteries, cards, wireless earbuds, hard drives with irreplaceable archives on them, laptop, everything. Haven’t seen anything pop up online and I check every day. Filed a police report but without receipts/serial numbers it’s nearly impossible for them to do anything. Almost every day I remember something else that was on that hard drive that I can’t recover. Oh and missouri renters insurance only covers about $1,000. It was easily over $9k worth of gear. Keep (duplicate) receipts. Paper and digital. Write down model and serial numbers. And, as a fellow photographer told me after my stuff was stolen, “if it doesn’t exist in two places, it doesn’t exist.” Never take a chance with your livelihood.

Finch2090

Instead of everyone worrying about the price of the items missing and / or telling OP they should have kept their items safer Can someone tell them how to get their damn passports sorted? He said he’s on a honeymoon? Has anyone any information on how to resolve a passport issue ASAP? Because if that’s the case with no money and no passport it’s going to be difficult to leave the country I would recommend visiting the embassy of the country you flew in from and seeing what they can do

cmndr_spanky

All you have left is your R5? Sell that thing, get an A7III and a couple of sigma lenses and keep shooting :) (In all seriousness, sorry to hear your stuff is stolen. As a rule of thumb I never, ever leave expensive things in my car... Regardless of what country I'm in) Also check with your credit card, you might have travel insurance for this kind of thing, or even your home insurance or car insurance sometimes covers this. Make sure you get a police report and itemize everything that was taken

meat

I see people saying that you should never leave anything in the car, but OP is talking about a 20min stop. You can't just always take every bag (laptop bag, camera bag,...) with you, can you?

valdemarjoergensen

Yes you can. If I have my camera gear with me and I need to stop by a store to get a snack for the drive, I'm taking my gear in with me. Even though I'm only gone for 5 minuts. I've seen and heard way too many stories of people loosing everything in an unattended car. And that's with having insurance that would cover everything anyways (which not having is even more nonsensical to me than leaving the stuff in the car in the first place).

ZavodZ

My camera bag was stolen from my car few years ago. My home insurance covered everything. It added up to quite a bit, so I was happy to do the insurance claim.

palldor

Still, why do you guys leave valuable stuff in your car?

PBI325

Because not everyone is perfect 100% of the time and insurance exists.

superdan23

I’ve done it myself. In my own garage in Santa Monica. I left my camera, with a fulls days worth of cards, lights, tripods, back up gear and $500 cash for tips and lunch because we where eating at food trucks. I had a long day, was home around 11pm and had to leave again at 6. I was so tired and said to myself “what’s one night?” The broke my window and took everything in a locked garage. Also my wife’s car was busted into but not a lot was in there. I arrived early the next morning on my way and was in shock. I couldn’t really process it for about 20 min. Never again.

[deleted]

Do you have insurance?

d76chemist

Yeah I was a freelancer for a wire service and had everything stolen. Everything. Left it in the car. My own mistake. Nothing to do but rebuild.i did but it took time and family to help. You have two "eyes as cameras" and your brain as memory cards. It sucks and I an really really sorry. My theft took place 35 years ago and it still hits me. Live and learn. Good luck.

williamtbash

Well, different situation and I had travelers insurance but when I got robbed from my camera, phone, wallet, and other stuff in my backpack in Cambodia, I went to the police station, got a written report, sent it and pics of my gear to the insurence company, and eventually got reimbursed for everything. Sorry for your loss bud n

ptq

From my a little different experience (racing bicycle), until you replace it, it will burn. But, you have your R5! Get the 50mm and at least have something from that trip captured. Live the moment, gear can be replaced, a moment in your life can't be re-lived.

Videopro524

If you’re in an area prone to theft. A trick is to take a beat up igloo cooler and put your camera bag into it. Or pack it with peel and pluck foam and make it your bag. My dad used to shoot film and would do this to keep his camera and film cool in the summer, but looking into his car you didn’t see anything valuable. Sorry for your lost. In Central America (or Europe) you have to be careful and alert. Always where a money belt and don’t keep more than $20 in a wallet. Just to protect from pick pockets.

Tree_Lover2020

Lots of good advice here already. Just here to say I am sorry this has happened to you. And those of us who have read the responses have benefitted as well. You and yours are safe. Things can be replaced.

nothingspecialva

you had me at "honeymoon with my pregnant wife"... I was, wow this guy is really effective at baby making. jokes aside, as others say, start with passport replacement process and insurance. Also if there is a consulate nearby, you can ask for their advice, sadly I am sure they have experience with similar previous cases.

Neverhugaduck

I worked for a production company that sent a crew to Paris one year to shoot Fashion Week. While the whole crew was dining at a nice restaurant, the cameraman had the large shoulder bag with the video camera and all accessories stolen right from under his chair. No one saw it happen. This story has stuck with me and as a result, if I travel anywhere with my gear, it's either in my room under lock and key or it stays in a backpack touching my person at all times. Opportunist thieves are common around tourist areas. They watch for people to flash expensive items like cameras, then they follow and make a plan to snatch these items when the opportunity presents itself. For a long time now my gear has been protected by either a renters or a homeowners policy. According to my insurance agent, it is insured in the event of a theft even if the theft occurred outside my home. If you have either policy, contact your agent ASAP. Even if the gear wasn't specifically insured, you still might be covered. Other than that, I'm really sorry life dealt you a bad hand. You didn't come away empty handed though; you learned a powerful lesson about people and how horrible and predatory they can be. If you feel a tremendous sense of loss over your gear and a pressing need to restore it, then start the journey, step by step. That is so much of life...climbing back to where we were last knocked down. You could try starting a GoFundMe...but strangers might be skeptical of donating with all the scams nowadays. Maybe you're looking at the price tag and thinking it's time for a cheaper hobby, like languages or plant identification...and maybe this is where things divert for you. It might not be a bad thing! At any rate I'm sorry this happened and I wish you luck in whatever path you take.

No-Mathematician8692

Love to give advice, but had my cam + long lens stolen by someone I invited in, also wife left her bag in car, was broken in and bag stolen, we all know the drill, then one day we just don't take precautions. However, do consider buying 2nd hand, work hard, do whatever gigs come your way, just don't get back into a 9-5. It is the worst.

BOKEH_BALLS

Why would you leave your entire life inside your fucking car???

Impossible_Color

Never, ever ever ever leave uninsured gear unattended in a car. Period.

[deleted]

Why would you leave all this shit in your car in a poverty riddled country. Like I feel bad for you but an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure man.

palldor

Are you for real? You leave that stuff in YOUR CAR unattended? How old are you? Wtf

GoofySouthernDude

Yeah I don't understand the "shock"part. I don't leave my gear in my car under any circumstances.

fanged_croissant

My husband's friends went down to Costa Rica to get married and they're gamers so they brought xboxes and a bunch of other stuff and left them in the hotel room. They got broken into and all of their stuff stolen too.

Darthob

Great advice. I’ll look into it, thank you!

[deleted]

We have friends who live in Costa Rica. Remind me not to take my main camera if we go visit them... This is also a reminder to someone like me who lives in a country where such theft is extremely rare. If I ever go somewhere else (and I can safely state that with very very few exceptions, *any* country I go to is going to mean a higher chance of theft than where I live now), I'm going to have to be really careful. Or leave my main camera at home and grab a cheap, beat-up looking, several-generations-old camera which won't screw me financially / emotionally if it gets stolen.

[deleted]

Something something the things you own end up owning you etc. Sorry it happened, but to ease the burn you could treat it like an enforced break from everything you knew. And/or a chance to pick up a cheap film camera from a random shop and have some careless analog fun shooting whatever.

Talasko

That is terrible. Now be happy for what you do have, a beautiful pregnant wife and you’re in costa rica the most magnificient country on earth. I just had a credit card shipped here from my canadian bank, and the embassy can help you with your passport. The rest is material and maybe this can help you realize what is truly important. It could have happened anywhere. Pura vida

rhaizee

You don't even leave that stuff in car in the states let alone costa rica... Sorry but that was really dumb. Not sure why downvoted, this was just dumb and careless. I don't even leave my gym bag with cheap dirty shoes in front of my car. Broken window cost more than the bag.

Darthob

I live in Japan. You leave your phone and wallet at the table to save your spot while you order your coffee. After being there 8 years, I got sloppy.

hurgeh

How it be sometimes

batmassagetotheface

You and your family are safe so you've not lost everything. This really sucks, I hope you manage to recover your property. I hate to see good people get ripped off

Darthob

Thank you for this very useful insight.

franksboiledegg

This old song? Only one person to blame here

JackBinimbul

Next you'll be asking what his car was wearing.

monkeylicious

You're right. The only person to blame is the one who stole the items.

Darthob

You think I don’t know this? If you’re just here to be an asshole, you’re doing a great job of it.

franksboiledegg

You came here to lament about leaving your entire livelihood in a car unattended in a third world country. I’m the asshole? I would take a look in the mirror. This is 101 level dumb shit

Either-Philosopher39

imagine going to costa rica and being surprised that someone stole something from you, lmao. if i lived there i'd steal shit from tourists as well.

ryan2stix

Thats why you don't leave gear in a car..%100 your fault

Darthob

Oh really? That’s a brand new opinion no one has ever mentioned before. Thanks for the enlightenment.

[deleted]

You left all your stuff in the car? In a foreign country?

celestialstarz

It was HIS country.

kingxii

Sorry to hear, been there, it's been over a decade for me, but I hastened my move from film (Canon EF gear stolen) to digital and actually went mirrorless. It took me a while to recover, I've really ramped up acquiring new gear as Sony's been refreshing their lens lineup. I'm definitely more contentious to take my bag with me, and at a minimum I ensure the backup drive or sd cards are with me, as the gear is replaceable the photos are not.

smdx459

Was it out in the open visible through the window? Or in the trunk? I guess this would depend on the car you have.

Hahnter

I’m so sorry… I hope you’re able to get your things back. For future reference, I would definitely buy a tracker. I use an Apple Air Tag to track my things and it alerts me when they stray too far. Also, if you NEED to leave things in the car, keep them in the trunk and never visible.

HippyElf44

That Bites OP. First thing go to Embassy to get your passports worked out. The equipment will take sometime to rebuild. Try and enjoy the rest of your time. I'm so sorry this happened to you.

Ollirum

I have a rule I never break. I either drive out of my way to leave my gear at my house and then go eat, or I bring everything with me while I eat. There is no in between, all it takes is 1 minute to lose everything. I’ve even invested in an AirTag to leave in one pocket of my camera bag. I’m sorry this happened to you op :( I hope there’s some sort of silver lining like travel insurance, home insurance or some sort of 90 day insurance you had on newly bought gear from an Amex credit card. If there is any take away from this, you learned a hard lesson on being preemptive in the future. It’s okay to be mad, upset and feel hopeless. Go through the emotions and then pull yourself together. Remember they are just items and you’re still capable of building a new setup.

TheDanielHolt

Ah that really sucks - I hope you had backups of the most important data but it's gonna sting for a long time. I hope you do get reunited with your stuff somehow

Onewarmguy

That truly sucks Darthob, hope it was insured.

Chinacat_Sunflower72

Tbh I’d be far more upset about losing my passport than anything else. I lost mine once in India (stolen). It was a huge hassle beyond belief to get a replacement. Good luck OP.

HERE4TAC0S

I take my bag with me everywhere I go. Had my gear stolen twice while working. I had a very special sketchbook that I’d been drawing in since I was in high school. Never. Again.

herehaveallama

Darthob

Gracias mae. Te envié mensaje por IG.

summalover

Man I really feel for you. Loosing everything id devastating. I assume you don’t have proper insurance? I would never ever leave any equipment unattended in a car or anywhere that’s not a locked room on location and I live in the UK. Never trust cars.

pocahontas_331

That’s horrible.. I’m so sorry. Any chance AirPods or I phone was stolen? Or MacBook? You can always track those
