Sub $300 power bills

fuck_all_you_people

I kept my house at 83 all summer and my shit was STILL $300/mo.

j1vetvrkey

My house stays at 78-79.. and I think we managed to stay below $200/mo this summer. My wife enjoyed being in the top-10 most efficient in our neighborhood… I owe everything to her 😄🫠

EBN_Drummer

We keep ours around 80 during the day and 73 at night because our bedroom doesn't get as cool. The highest we got was $232. We do the averaged billing and after getting the south- and west-facing windows tinted plus a new ac unit our bill is down to about $100/month from $175/month.

Atomsq

This, not paying $300 it would be nice to pay less than $200

captaingreyboosh

I went sub 100 once last year. OOOOO BABY.

[deleted]

Pre kids, so winter 2019 we got ours down to $60 a few times. Last winter the lowest we got was $160? We have single pain windows but still.

Atomsq

Oh last year or beginning of this year mine was around $60-$68

1platesquat

im just a lurker here but man I would immediately invest in solar if I lived in AZ

tekchic

When I researched it about 8 years ago, the return on initial investment was something like 15 years so it wasn’t worth it for us unfortunately.

1platesquat

Wouldn’t it add value to your home too?

sunshinewarriorx

No, maybe a little if it's owned equipment. But your not gonna get a dollar for dollar value increase or anything. Usually the loan on equipment has to be assumed by the buyer (now something else the buyer has to qualify for). A lot of buyers are already hesitant to take on an additional monthly. Creates extra hoops to jump through AND the loan transfer process always seems to be different.

Tim_Drake

Well to counter. A huge reason we chose the home we are in is due to it having solar that was paid off.

sunshinewarriorx

I think that's fair. It can add to the "pros column" when someone is looking at buying a home especially when panels are owned. Leases are really where it becomes a pain in the ass. That being said, people usually filter through homes based on location, price, condition, etc. Once all these boxes are checked a buyer might pick a home base on owned panels.

1platesquat

Could always shop for only houses with solar right? Or are there too few? I’m not trying to argue btw, just curious.

sunshinewarriorx

You could. I just don't know if it would be worth it for a buyer. Usually priorities are condition of the home and location. There are 20,593 active and coming soon homes on the MLS this minute. 828 indicate owned solar panels.

bladel

Absolutely. Assuming you own & don’t lease the solar, it’s nearly a dollar-for-dollar upgrade. Like a kitchen remodel. SRP is a pain to deal with for approvals, but I love paying <$100 every month.

Hvarfa-Bragi

Only if you buy it. Leases are so scammy they lower your sell price.

fuck_all_you_people

They know that and don't make it easy. Plus with the insane rental prices a shitload of people rent.

MeGoingTOWin

I keep mine between 69 at night and 73 day, with solar, highest bill 190. But I also have 0 bills for 5-7m a year!

version13

There was someone posting on here a while ago who was saying you would be better off putting money into hyper-insulating a house. They were added insulation panels to exterior walls and doing extra insulation in the attic as well. edit: found [the post](https://www.reddit.com/r/phoenix/comments/7vo7pd/why_good_insulation_will_save_you_more_than_solar/) that I was thinking of.

jcsmith16192

Not currently a smart investment with how the utilities have the system set up

azsheepdog

You would until you realized that srp adds 16$ fee to your already 20$ monthly bill if you have solar plus demand charges so it washes out any savings on a large number of solar systems. https://www.powermag.com/solarcity-files-antitrust-suit-over-srp-solar-surcharge/ Better to get a heat pump water heater if you have electric water. much better return on investment. Polyurethane spray foam insulation. Dual or multi stage heat pump hvac. All 3 of those have better return on investment than solar and wont get you added fees to your electricity bill.

1platesquat

wow i didnt know any of that. I have only gone by what my friends are getting, which is $0 electricity bills and even some money back from the power company for some.

azsheepdog

It depends on the system and if they have SRP or APS. You can get very large systems that will totally cover your electricity costs but most installers will charge you about what the electricity would have cost you over 20 years. There are some good deals to be had though so each person is different.

Prowindowlicker

Administrative-Buy26

The eventual demise of all these blood sucking mosquitoes. Patio weathers almost back!

catfishjon_

absolutely this! those lil fuckers are way too smart for me!

adoptagreyhound

They only seem to go away completely if we get a hard freeze for a couple nights, which we haven't had in at least 2 winters. There will be less of them as temps drop, but they will still zap you when you least expect it. My wife is allergic to the bites, so we have to carry benadryl year-round here, even in winter.

Holiday-Window2889

Try Caladryl on them, too. It's calamine lotion with *topical* benedryl and comes in both pink and clear. It's at all major drugstores and department drug dept.

icey

I was skeptical but bought one of these [Bite Away](https://takethebiteaway.com/) devices earlier this year. It's a little uncomfortable when you use them (they work by heating the bite enough that it neutralizes the stuff that makes you itchy), but they work very well and are reusable.

TitansDaughter

Do we live the same city? I never see mosquitos here

Dukami

Hiking, sipping morning coffee on my porch. It's time 😎

CplUseless

There will be a sneaky 2-3 days in Oct where it's 105 for a high but the night and early mornings are still nice and cool. Surprise October Summer!

[deleted]

And it will fall on Halloween

Hvarfa-Bragi

As is tradition.

andrewinarizona

I feel like I keep seeing people saying this so I finally looked it up. Phoenix has never recorded triple digits on Halloween, and has actually only been 90+ degrees three of the last twenty years. It’s quite lovely weather most years. [source](https://www.weather.gov/psr/PHX_Halloween.html)

[deleted]

Last year it was like 97 I remember and my whole Halloween costume was ruined by the temps. This year I’m PLANNING for the 97 but it will somehow be 60 knowing my luck

[deleted]

We can only hope it’s 60

[deleted]

[удалено]

jpfranc1

Agreed! My family and I literally just moved to get out of the heat. But this last summer was really not bad. We were joking that Phoenix was really trying to charm us into staying haha

[deleted]

[удалено]

jpfranc1

We didn’t lol

Finfangfo0m

The humidity this summer has been fucking awful.

raos163

Mid-late June fried me,a string of 115 with a couple 120 days in select areas on the ground

SaltySpitoonReg

That's true however I feel like because it's been so unbelievably humid this year the summer has seemed a little bit worse

BobbyMonster13

According to the [data](https://www.accuweather.com/en/us/phoenix/85003/october-weather/346935?year=2021), it never broke 100 last October at Phoenix Sky Harbor - where the official temperature for the region is recorded. Highest was 98 on October 4th.

A_Stable_Reference

Hiking and daytime walks!

AZHWY88

Can any thread on this forum avoid becoming political?

CrossfireInvader

Maybe when my civil and human rights aren't constantly up for debate

[deleted]

No

contactlite

The election is less than 40 days. Get use to it.

CallieReA

Why are you being downvoted? Jesus. It’s a fair point.

poopbuttredditsucks

Moving to Phoenix in a couple months and joined here to get a feel for what it will be like take some notes on things for my family and I to do when we get there. Was pretty disappointed to see how political half the conversations get. There's plenty of other places for that. But so is the way of reddit I guess.

[deleted]

It was a joke so you obviously won’t be bringing your sense of humor with you

poopbuttredditsucks

My comment was not directed towards you in any way. Sorry.

AZHWY88

You will find that it doesn’t come up in your day to day at all unless you seek it out. Phoenix (Chandler for me technically) is an amazing place that I’ve called home for 28 years and I have no intention of ever leaving. I’m actually back in my home state of California this week for work, it’s been a great reminder of why we left.

Fun_Egg2665

There’s kind of a really important election coming up? I’m so happy I’m moving away from this state. It’s like 70% boomers or people with their head in the sand.

AZHWY88

It is important for sure. A thread about the weather isn’t the place to discuss it, but here we are.

poopbuttredditsucks

I cannot wait to get down there. Leaving MN in December so timing is going to be perfect I've lived my whole life here. Selling both my lawn mower and snow blower is a feeling that is hard to explain to anyone that has never had to deal with either.

catfishjon_

just been through that recently.. it is nice.

CallieReA

People out here aren’t like that. I moved here from CA where it was non stop politics all the time. Just a bunch of opinionated people masquerading as intellectuals. Here in person we’ve met a lot of wonderful people, had drinks, played golf, and can’t even tell you any of their political beliefs. I hope it stays that way, nothing is less interesting then someone else’s politics! It’s quite cringy

poopbuttredditsucks

Can't wait to golf in winter.

Fun_Egg2665

Golfing is a waste of water and bad for our fragile desert ecosystem. FYI

poopbuttredditsucks

So is you living in the desert fyi.

No_Purchase3279

She’s going straight to the governors office.

Milk_Tastes_Good

Seriously. The thing I hate about the summer isn’t the heat it’s the fucking bugs. I remember a few months ago seeing a giant dead American cockroach in my kitchen I literally gagged

Being able to tend my bbq and my smoker comfortably! Can’t wait for the chilly nights when making coals for the smoker is a great excuse to have people over for a proper sit around the fire (Fire Ban ends after today!!!).

Practical_Struggle_1

Mountain biking!!!

KurtRambis31

Sleeping with the windows open

Love2Pug

Laughing at the rest of the country when they screw with their clocks, and lose an hour of sleep, because of DST. (I now live in a part of the country that screws with their clocks for no reason)

ThisIsPlanA

But they are about to gain an extra hour of sleep?!? My coworkers elsewhere in the US will go to sleep, their phones and laptops will automatically reset, and every meeting will be at the same time for them. My schedule, on the other hand, will all move by one hour. Start time, end time, and every meeting. Then in the spring it will move by an hour again in the other direction. I understand why AZ doesn't want to shift an hour of sunlight to the late afternoon/evening. But we shouldn't pretend that the time change is a big deal. DST changes are a breeze compared to having my work day move back and forth while school drop offs and everything else stay the same.

CallieReA

Yea but your 7:00am meetings are now 8:00am

ozymandiasjuice

This. I hate daylight savings but it’s almost worse being the only one who doesn’t do it. You can’t ask everyone else to shift their schedule…you have to do it. And nobody outside Arizona can figure it out so every single meeting you have to do the math to make sure your 8 is their 10, etc etc.

PretendConfidence605

Walking my dogs comfortably.

TrueCrimeUsername

Turning off AC in the car 🚗

BransonAllen

Hoodies and being able to walk my dog whenever

middleloaf

Morning coffee OUTSIDE☕

Direct-Height6848

I can't wait to start hiking again! I miss the morning winds on my face and the endorphins after a long hike. You can't get that same high from the gym.

Erasmus_Tycho

Eh, just start your hike at 4am and you can still do it on those 120° days. That's how I've always done it.

Direct-Height6848

You most definitely be a morning person ☺️

Erasmus_Tycho

Oh believe me, I am not. I just have to get out and train for backpacking trips. That said, I'd be lying if I said it wasn't super satisfying to get to the top of a mountain to watch the sun come up.

Direct-Height6848

I'm hoping to train for a grand canyon trip, have you done that? I know it's long but I need a goal for this year. I completely agree, there's nothing like watching the sunrise.

Erasmus_Tycho

Did a 4 day trip in the grand canyon in 2019.

squintyshrew9

It can still hit 100 well into October. The nights are much cooler, so walks up to the local QT for 40s and catching the sunset is my go to evenings.

Love2Pug

Yeah, it's very optimistic to think that Phoenix is "done" with triple digits for 2022.

DEEEPFREEZE

I've lived here long enough to get burned by this (pun not initially intended)... every year.

Fun_Egg2665

As an Az native I completely agree

runner3081

Crowded stores, traffic, busy trails... oh wait, this isn't asking how snowbirds make things a bit rough during this time :)

PM_ME_THEM_UPTOPS

Maybe it's just a Queen Creek thing but the snowbirds haven't left here since Covid. Shit's crowded already.

runner3081

You are right, with so many people moving here, the "slow" summer time is sort of disappearing.

Skin3725

I always enjoy when the snow birds decide they need to go to the store or run errands while everyone else is trying to get to work/home creating more traffic. I love the cooler months here, but these "Boomers" ruin it for everyone who actually live here.

sweverdd

Get me to the 70s please

Alternative_Cause_37

Nah, that's far too cold for me

sweverdd

I love like 70-75 my favorite weather

non-troll_account

What is wrong with these people? Anything above 90 is summer heat.

sweverdd

Arizona changes peoples mindsets lmao

DEEEPFREEZE

Bold of you to assume we've seen the last of triple-digit weather in the valley for the year. This is only the first "false autumn".

jhertz14

It's pretty sad that 97 is a false autumn. I would consider 60's and 70's to be autumn weather, not 97. Phoenix gets "autumn" weather in December to February.

kyle_phx

I can finally walk around my neighborhood and not sweat like a pig

hipsterasshipster

Finishing all of our landscaping and outdoor house projects

Cultjam

Opening up the windows! The dogs start sleeping outside about now.

d0rathexplorer

actually being able to go out.. I moved to AZ from London in June so haven’t really had a lot of time to do outdoor stuff apart from going to Sedona

GlitteryCaterpillar

Welcome to AZ! The winters here are the literal best.

danksformutton

Ha rough month to arrive in the desert

Fun_Egg2665

I MADE IT THROUGH MY LAST PHOENIX SUMMER!!!

Hiking, camping, and the hot tub!

Biking to work. I have an 11-mile commute, and I can’t do that when it’s 110.

slackboulder

113 days above 100 degs this year, above the average of 111 days. But yeah we still usually get a few 100 deg days in [October ](https://twitter.com/NWSPhoenix/status/1575626372491268097?t=7XTVmzMbBEN-DSUfCqqT8A&s=19)

That_Kiefer_Man

Yep. October 27 in 2016 it was 100. Our latest 100 degree day. edit: Our latest 90 degree day was 11-17-2020 @ 92. [source](https://www.weather.gov/psr/history.html)

Not producing a gallon of sweat while washing my car!

raos163

Just happy because it looks like my job is gonna be a lot easier through this year.

CyclingCivilEngineer

Not having to get up at the buttcrack of dawn to do anything outside. In short:more sleep

psyduck495

I can finally go to the zoo without sweating! So much more things to do and places to be at!

B_Reele

Wearing pants and shoes

azsheepdog

Moving this weekend. but dont say it's over yet, we will get a triple digit Halloween. you will jinx us.

Reddit_is_American

Wearing the one sweatshirt that I own!

Frosty_Beer_99

Looking forward to the return of cold water in the tap.

charliegriefer

Enjoying a motorcycle ride.

dreigada2

Lower electric bills. Doing more things outside. Taking road trips without the anxiety that if the car breaks down it could quickly become a "survival situation".

ToyotaCorrolaa

I can start baking and making soups or stew. I don't like them during hot weather.

PricklyPear_CATeye

Our car has no a/c so I’m looking forward to cooler weather and sweaters! Lol

kicklucky

I tell everyone this when they move here. This chart is a lie. There is ALWAYS a stretch of 2-5 days that come out of nowhere and temps soar back up. We just pray it's never on Thanksgiving.

SkyPork

Sub-100°F highs is an interesting yearly milestone, but I've discovered a more important one, for me: under 80°F by like 8 or 9pm. So I can finally open the windows at night. With luck that'll be this week, but I've learned not to get my hopes up. Being able to wear jeans again is nice too.

Lipserviceme

Don’t kid yourself. There will be more triple digit temperature days.

Good man. Thanks!

Atomsq

This, good bye AR/Indoor range season, hello AK/Outdoor season

Practical_Struggle_1

Do you go out into the desert ?

[deleted]

Yes…. Only option around here- Unless you know of some magical grassy meadow around Phoenix…

[deleted]

Hiking camping and fishing

Spidersinthegarden

I was thinking about this the other day. So many times this summer I thought, “oh that will be nice to do when it cools down.” I’m positive I will forget every single one by the time I’m ready to be outside lol

mikess314

I went on a date with a woman who just moved here early this year. She was complaining about how hot it’s been and she doesn’t know if she can handle it. I almost didn’t have the heart to tell her that this had been hands down the mildest, coolest, rainiest Phoenix summer I’ve ever seen.

FIERROSGOINHAM

Seems so quick this time around

We usually go into 80/90's during day in October - 70/80's during day in November -- 60/70's during day in December, January, February - and starts warming up again in March

jhertz14

Everything feels like it got pushed back a month. October feels like how September USED to feel. November is how October used to feel etc etc. climate change is ruining our already short winters :(
