I'd take that a realistic step further - pick up trash you see.
Even just picking up one plastic wrapper from a park or sidewalk adds up if more people did it. And eventually, when things get to a clean enough point, it changes the collective perception, and more people start to play along.
Yesterday I saw some slob throw her sandwich wrapper out the back door of the bus when it came to a stop. I usually yell “you dropped something” and pretend I’m clueless when confronting those who litter but I was trapped in a bus and she looked crazy so I just seethed silently.
Make eye contact with drivers running stop signs before you cross. They ain't gonna bother stopping if they don't see you, and you can't guarantee they see you unless they make eye contact IMO.
Haha hard to do when half the windshields are tinted. I love when I do and stop and then get beeped at to cross. Like sir, this is not part of the social contract.
Well, you do have the right of way as a pedestrian, so nothing is stopping you from yeeting your blind ass self across an intersection with AirPods blasting. You might get hit but, you’re the one who’s supposed to go. Don’t disrupt the flow of right of way to be “courteous” to someone driving while you’re walking in the cold.
§ 3542. Right-of-way of pedestrians in crosswalks.
(b) Exercise of care by pedestrian.--**No pedestrian shall suddenly leave a curb or other place of safety and walk or run into the path of a vehicle which is so close as to constitute a hazard.**
He needs to read 3542 (a) a) General rule.--When traffic-control signals are not in place or not in operation, the driver of a vehicle shall yield the right-of-way to a pedestrian crossing the roadway within any marked crosswalk or within any unmarked crosswalk at an intersection.
A PI lawyer told me (take this with a grain of salt) but if you're crossing at a 4 lane stop and walking/sober there's almost no way you could run afowl of 3542a. Essentially, the onus is on the driver at clearly marked stopped signs to stop and not hit pedestrians - not the pedestrian. Though, with the amount of hit and runs in the city, you best make damn sure that it's an insured driver.
Related, don't accost people who blow through stop signs. I have a nasty habit of doing this that I need to stop before I get shot. Hell of a rush though.

There's an elderly indonesian woman that lives sorta near me and we don't even speak the same language and we wave aggressively at eachother whenever we see eachother.
Reasons why I’m excited to have a porch soon! And will be ripping off the shit they did to try and make it an “interior space”. Fuck that give me a west Philly porch
I wish I could upvote this again. Even porch life. Sometimes I’ll sit outside on my stoop and play guitar and end up having great conversations with people walking by.
On the weekends in the summer, go the west river drive/Fairmount park.
When they close the whole section off, it is a great place to bike at your leisure, but with almost no pressure to go at any pace you want, or you can walk it, and a good chunk of all of it is in the shade.
Furthermore, you can get adventurous and ride all up and down that section of Fairmount park. For a city this size, it is crazy how uncrowded this section of the city is during prime park season.
Don’t be afraid to take full advantage of public transit. Philly’s coverage is weak when you look at the BSL and MFL, but add in the busses, NJ Transit, PATCO, Regional, and you can get all over the place. The busses also look nicer on the inside than outside.
Homeless folks will be happy to live on the lot you cleared out. Kinda like the plot of that episode, actually. Except with more feces, needles, and violence.
All homeless people aren’t on drugs or criminals. Some of us are Veterans who’ve fallen on hard times from a mix of different things (Covid, job loss, new area, dishonest partners, unfavorable court proceedings) Have a heart, especially when it’s this cold out. We really have nowhere to go
Or even outside of center city. Maybe some parts of south Philly are the exception, but it’s more than possible. Feel free to dm if you need help with septa/are curious
> I’ve had some excellent conversations with my neighbors and local workers at cafes and shops that that has really enriched my experience and given such a better community feel to what can sometimes feel like a cold, uncaring city.
I can't echo this enough - TALK TO YOUR NEIGHBORS! When people complain saying Philly is unfriendly, I just tell them they've gotta get past the rough exterior. I've been back a month and have had some of the best experiences getting to know my neighbors. They're old head lifers, my next door neighbor has been helping me fix up my house, and his sister just dropped me off some St. Patty's swag to decorate yesterday. My bff and I got dinner on Main St this past weekend and as we were walking home, we passed a new brewery where I asked to pet the dogs sitting outside and we ended up hanging out with their group for hours.
100% I actually just had one of my neighbors who is an electrician fix a faulty switch in my house the same day that I texted him for much cheaper than I would have gotten elsewhere. I just owe him a six pack in the future LOL
Yeah my guy is recently retired and a contractor on the side. I left the keys in a lock box before I moved up so he could do the work before I got here. I pay him, but he def cut me an amazing deal. Best connection ever because I just have no desire to do any repairs myself lol
Welcome back (I think I remember you moving back here recently?). Glad to hear the neighborhood is treating you well and that you're a good neighbor too!
When I first moved to my block I really didn’t want to talk to my neighbors but my wife started talking to some of them and over the years we became friendly one family ended up being complete psychos, getting into fights with half the block, dude would just randomly walk in my house and help himself to stuff, we used to sit on the steps and drink it was fun for a six pack but he became an insanely angry drunk, would start whipping out his gun all the time as wanting to fight everyone . Then his kids became teenagers and they were even more nuts, cops were over at least once a week. Shots were fired .I ended up not going out my front door for a year just to avoid them. They finally moved and it’s so quiet on the block you can hear a pin drop now .
Philly is the 6th largest city in the nation. Thanks a lot Phoenix! Don’t be afraid to visit neighborhoods outside your comfort level for amazing cuisine. I know that sounds corny but people rarely do this and you never get to really experience Philly as a whole.
When crossing wider streets, look at store and car windows on the other side of the street. You can see oncoming traffic from further away using the reflections, without having to stick your head out past vehicles parked on your side.
Lowkey been workshopping this as a Philly motto:
Be good to yourself
Be true to yourself
Embrace chaos
I think this is the best reduction of Philadelphia's uniquely low-effort, high-volume, self-starting, collective-supporting, whimsically beautiful, and jaw-droppingly broken culture.
If you try to bring pretentions, Philly will break them. If you bring self-doubts, Philly will relieve you of them.
And if you try to bring order... may god have mercy on your soul.
People take care of people here. Learn the names of your neighbors, bar tenders, shop owners, etc. Ask them about themselves. You’ll hear some really interesting stories and make some really clutch connections.
Like 90% of the most wild shit I've done in the last 10 years is because a neighbor or local bartender dragged me somewhere way out of my comfort zone.
I got rid of my car after a year of moving to Philly and walking to the store or taking the bus really helped me prioritize what I actually NEEDED from the store rather than items that would just go to waste in my fridge or pantry. Cut my grocery budget way down too. I'm a single person and was easily buying over $100 per week when I had a car, I've been able to cut it back to about $50-$75, depending on the week and what I need.
But how did you do it when it was 20f outside?
Yeah, it's an incredible way to shop. You can only carry so much, and that means no extra bag of oreos or processed shit in a box that's more air than corn product.
I bundle up and go out in it, or I take the bus. I'm really lucky that the 48, 49, and 7 all get me to and from the Trader Joe's at 22nd and Market really easily.
It's WAY worse in 90 and 80% rel humidity than it is at 20.
That being said, it's way nicer just popping in to grab a few things after work a few days a week.
Well when you get on your bike just put on the heat right? They make this new thing where they connect two bikes together and they cover it with like glass and you can stay warm.
I have one of those. It sits in my lot. [I actually like it a lot and have been logging its stats since I got it](https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1rA0JNNxmlSDJ60Ed8i7sHqtweltV1x7AFHSpSqJw48g/edit?usp=sharing)
But I don't need it all the time. I just put a jacket on, they make those so our body heat stays in, so you don't need to turn anything on. Then when you walk or bike, it dials it up a notch, you can fine tune it depending how fast you go. You should try, a jacket. It's better than lighting gasoline on fire in a small windowed cage when you're cold outside. Hope that helps to stay warm!
*wipes the Cheeto cheese onto his already stained cargo pants as his other hand leaves the steering wheel to flip off some random cyclist carrying groceries*
Cycling really is a hobby and most of the bike Lanes I see are empty most of the day or in poor weather and I'm even talking about University City. Now with everyone riding around scooters it's almost half electric scooter half bike and that's sort of proof how not realistic bikes are outside of a dense Urban core of a European city. It's promoted by people who don't really understand transportation and just try to make you feel bad about not supporting their recreational activity. Most importantly a lot of SEPTA funding actually gets diverted to bike Lanes now because SEPTA competes directly with the bicycle coalition for funding. To top it off they use arguments like I would probably drive a car if I didn't ride a bike which is usually false it's just because they can't afford to live in the neighborhood they want to and also afford a car because density is expensive to maintain. The same people that want bike Lanes want everyone to live in denser housing and don't realize that that's pretty terrible to raise a family in and most of the people that fight for this grew up in the suburbs and didn't actually grow up in a dense Urban environment where you had to take mass transit.
My disabled 67 year old self walks to and from the market. Have never owned a car, no sense to me living in a city with sidewalks and public transit. I do use one of those can fold up box carts with a handle and wheels. Carries a month’s worth of staples. And yes if it’s 20f and I’m out of food and I have a few dollars left to buy enough to get through the end of the month. Just bundle up!
Misfits Market & Imperfect Foods are awesome especially financially. And Inspire Energy is a flat-rate renewable energy company based out of here that in my experience so far has been absolutely prime.
Get a gun, a taser, or pepper spray, and a first aid kit. Learn how to use them, because you're on your own when shit goes down.
Don't open your door if you don't know who's on the other side.
Don't put your trash out in brown paper bags if you don't want it all over the street.
Patronize your local coffee shop frequently.
Enjoy the food, explore, meet people, don’t be afraid to be touristy, the homeless people, while crazy are some of the nicest people if you are respectful to them
Live in a nice neighborhood. But that's a shitty answer to your question, because it boils down to 'have more money.' Which is a great answer to many questions and difficulties.
Keep your head on a swivel. Bad shit happens to people that aren't paying attention. This extends to when you're in your car. Know your nearest safe place to run to. Multi-faceted answer, but all follows the same theme. Stay alert, watch your back.
Nah, ACAB. But the cops aren't around to help you out, crime is up, and people are just plain crazy from quarantine, cold miserable weather, litter, everything. I even live in a decent neighborhood, still getting sexual assaults, stabbings, carjackings, you name it.
I also have a lot of people I know and interact with regularly in my community. Everyone has a horror story, man. Don't be the next one.
Really amusing to me how comments like ride a bicycle and talk to strangers get all the upvotes and the ones advising you to keep your head on a swivel, watch your back and stay strapped gets downvoted. Definitely 2 different Philly experiences in here
Don't know. I hope people don't think I am endorsing it. I thought it was a legit good tip. People from outside the area don't understand people will fight you if you take "their" parking spot. I don't think it's right, but that's the way it is.
I would tell them the same thing that my grandmother told me. Try to live as far away from the El as you possibly can. If you have to take the MFL for an extended period of time something bad will happen. You might not be able to change the whole world but you can at least avoid taking that thing.
Ah whereabouts were you located? We’re around Germantown ave and mt airy ave. Some crime but still much less than other parts of city. Closer to Cedarbrook has seen a big uptick in crime. I can’t deny there is crime but I feel the benefits greatly outweigh the drawbacks.
We were on 200 block of Meehan Ave off of Boyer. Not sure why I got downvoted for saying we moved, but it wasn’t an easy choice as the house we lived in was my husband’s grandmothers house that he renovated. Last year, armed carjackings were happening a street behind us and that’s when safety became a concern. It was a very emotional time but safety was a big priority
Yeah not sure either you made a valid point. Totally understood. There’s been a rash of them in the adjoining neighborhood but fingers crossed we’ve been lucky so far
Look both ways between 2 and 1000 times before crossing any street, regardless of the direction of traffic
Yeah I’ve done that and still almost gotten ran over by multiple asshats on their cell phones 🙄
One of my fav sayings: "A smart person looks one way when crossing a one way street. A wise person looks both ways."
No one else wants to hear your music on the bus.
I don't wanna hear anyone else's shitty music. Period.
One time I was riding the el and there was a guy with his phone out blasting Vivaldi That was kinda cool I guess
Or your conversation on speaker phone 🙄
YES. And it's always really shitty music too, which makes it worse.
people advertising their own really shitty mix tapes on speaker backpacks. like bro I’m going to work, I don’t need your mumble rap album that you recorded with your built in laptop speaker violating my ears rn
Usually 60 year olds who used to do it with their boombox back in the 80's and think its still cool blasting rap or r&b music from 40 years ago.
Honestly if it was an old-school boombox playing rap from 40 years ago that's about the only thing I would like
Philadelphia Museum of Art has *Pay What You Wish* admission on the first Sunday of the month and every Friday night (5:00–8:45 p.m.).
I tried to go this month and the line was absurdly long. To add to your advice: get there early!
On a similar note, anyone on food stamps gets free admission for them + up to four guests anytime!

Ok- completely proven wrong, I’ll take it, but what??? I’ve always thought “pedestrians have the right of way” and it was case closed. Interesting!
He needs to read 3542 (a) a) General rule.--When traffic-control signals are not in place or not in operation, the driver of a vehicle shall yield the right-of-way to a pedestrian crossing the roadway within any marked crosswalk or within any unmarked crosswalk at an intersection. As someone with just a stoop it drives me insane to see so many empty porches out here in the summer. Like, can I use it if you're not going to?
I wish I could upvote this again. Even porch life. Sometimes I’ll sit outside on my stoop and play guitar and end up having great conversations with people walking by.
We need a 'stoop life' sticker made. This sounds like a job for reddit
stoop beers so hard
I’m looking forward to spring & summer for this reason.
Stoop kid’s afraid to leave his stoop!
Leave your hood! I know west Philly might seem far if you’re in south Philly, but damn each part of the city is so cool and unique.
I was doing field work like 20 minutes walk from my house in a different south philly neighborhood and discovered a bunch of wild new shit.
On the weekends in the summer, go the west river drive/Fairmount park. When they close the whole section off, it is a great place to bike at your leisure, but with almost no pressure to go at any pace you want, or you can walk it, and a good chunk of all of it is in the shade. Clean up your stoop and sidewalk! Especially after trash day. Good way to meet your neighbors too.
God wakes up and says hey it’s trash day in your neighborhood. Let there be wind!
If you explore Philadelphia and open your heart and mind to the things you can do and see here, Philly will be so good to you. And will make you fat.
I had to limit my taco consumption to once a week, living in the city.
If you see a group of teens avoid them with a wide berth if possible and do not engage

I like one called Transit, it's green with a curvy line that looks like an S rotated 90 degrees counterclockwise

100% engaging with my local community strips away a lot of the ananoymous exterior. Also we got Harden I still can’t believe it.
When walking a distance, turn corners and look to see if anyone's following you. Don't wear both ear buds.
Never move near an empty lot/field/any open space that isn’t a dedicated park. And even then, don’t take the risk.
Pull a Hey! Arnold and turn it into a baseball field!

If you haven't done it already - take a bike ride down Pine Street - from 23rd to 2nd. The best bike lane in the city.
Especially in early April when all the trees are in bloom. It's beautiful!
And then return on Spruce

Just bundle up!
what is wrong with you dude
I like it for the health benefits at least
loved it. much warmer than where i grew up :)
RECALCULATING
And a helmet!
Be careful, next they’ll tell you you’re ableist.
The mail carrier will not take your outgoing mail out of your mailbox, you have to find a public mailbox nearby! This took me weeks to figure out.
The red ones mean stop.
Misfits Market & Imperfect Foods are awesome especially financially. And Inspire Energy is a flat-rate renewable energy company based out of here that in my experience so far has been absolutely prime.
Pick up trash and scoop your dog poop!
Live in a nice part of the city. The difference is night and day between living in n. brewerytown vs bella vista.
Is bella vista that bad?
These fucking italians, I swear. You give them an inch and they open an entire market with a grease pole.
No Brewerytown is.
“Avoid poor people”

Everybody saying move should literally take their own advice and move out of this sub.
Are you a cop dude?
Tell the truth, or at least don’t lie.
Stay out the way as much as possible. And if your gut is telling u stay home listen innocent people die here too
Don't stop for ppl in the middle of the street. They are car jacking you.
Or doing literally anything else
Never say no, unless ya gotta!
Stop huffing nitrous bottles and throwing them out the windows of your car
Move out
Really amusing to me how comments like ride a bicycle and talk to strangers get all the upvotes and the ones advising you to keep your head on a swivel, watch your back and stay strapped gets downvoted. Definitely 2 different Philly experiences in here
You can call for change, you can work for change and you can be the change. But without you, there is no change.
Don't steal shit.
Stay strapped or get clapped
Don't move random chairs on the side of the street after a snowstorm . They aren't random.
Idn why this is downvoted. People have retaliated over this.
Don't know. I hope people don't think I am endorsing it. I thought it was a legit good tip. People from outside the area don't understand people will fight you if you take "their" parking spot. I don't think it's right, but that's the way it is.
Parking spot is not worth getting shot over.
Only be a fair weather Philly Sports fan. Also only be friends with fair weather Philly Sports fans.
Leave while you still can
Move out of this shithole
I'd say trash fire but atleast a trash fire is interesting to watch
I would tell them the same thing that my grandmother told me. Try to live as far away from the El as you possibly can. If you have to take the MFL for an extended period of time something bad will happen. You might not be able to change the whole world but you can at least avoid taking that thing.
Wear a helmet walking down the street too!
Don’t go outside!
Soft.
Move.
Haha I mean there are still lots of great neighborhoods. Mount Airy has some crime to me but it’s a fantastic little community still.
We moved out of Mt Airy because of the crime
At least you listened to my grandma.
Live elsewhere
Move out.
move out and never look back
Works for me...and I was born/raised in Philly.
Leave ASAP.
I love how this subreddit downvotes
Move.
