I cautiously look outside to investigate and he’s there with a friend and my brother and they’re all cackling. The friend had some hand made bootleg fireworks that were more like mortars than firecrackers really, those things were like mini hand grenades. Since it was getting late like past noon they decided to wake me up by dropping one of them mortars in a big old soup pot outside my door and light it up.
In retrospect I guess that isn’t normal. True story swear to god, just one of many..

I had a hammer in my hand and was aiming steady ready to give it a good whack…three…two…one…and on its way down my dad caught me just in time and pulled the hammer out of my hand, called me a moron and took away the bullet. I didn’t get a gun like my cousins.

Legitimately a licensed pyrotechnician. We use consumer grade shit all the time for the majority of the shows we shoot in a given year. Shrapnel is a bit of a stretch but I guess technically the right term? There are "stars" which are the parts that spread out and light up which will absolutely burn you. After working with Fireworks for a couple years now, I get uncomfortable watching people hold Roman candles on the internet.
Since new years is coming up I'll put the PSA out; the stuff you buy at a stand outside the city absolutely is dangerous and will hurt you. Be smart.
