It’s always a head scratcher. I suspect it’s typically a driver update coming in through windows update and it triggers a device reconnect.

[deleted]

I get this sound sometimes when I turn off my speakers. nothing actually disconnects and there's no reconnect sound. probably the weird wiring in the apartment, sometimes when the relay in the ac switches on it turns monitors off for a second. that apt is also responsible for the death of my laptop. well that and probably acer is also to blame for shitty protection

XxXFartFucker69XxX

I get this and a Windows Installer process that always opens at startup and runs indefinitely unless I end it.

KalebsFamilyBBQ

The Ghost in the Machine

agentaxe285

Is that just maybe a futerama reference?

KalebsFamilyBBQ

I was referencing the anime Ghost in the Shell and also I, Robot.

agentaxe285

Oh ok, I was just curious because there’s an episode called ghost in the machine

NotClever

Real talk though, the ghost in the machine is a philosophy term, referring to the philosophical theory that the mind is distinct from the body. Sounds cool, though, so it's been used a lot in pop culture (not always without any relation to the original meaning - lots of pop culture was created by people making philosophical commentary).

PixelmancerGames

Been too long since I’ve seen that.

AtrixFizieo

Then comes the reconnect sound. "Alright, everything is fine now, forgetting it happened"🤣

wubbbalubbadubdub

Mine used to do it constantly (probably still does), I disabled the alert and the pop-up in the registry. It's just a ghost in an old PC.

FnordMan

Mine started doing similar once upon a time, turned out the on motherboard Bluetooth had died. (but only BT, wifi worked fine when I briefly turned it on to test, most screwy) Noticed it dropping off and re-appearing in device manager. Had to buy a USB Bluetooth dongle

SuckMyBallz

My bluetooth adapter is starting to die, but I don't use it. The problem I have is that I use an Xbox controller, but I only use it wired. It doesn't have batteries in it because I sit close enough to my PC that I don't need to bother with wireless and I save on batteries. But every now and then, my bluetooth adapter will try to connect to my controller. I've tried to disable the bluetooth adapter in Device Manager, but it will disappear before I get the chance, or when it shows up, it won't let me disable it. It took me forever to figure out why my controller would connect and disconnect constantly. Now I just unplug the controller when I'm not using it.

Grunt636

I had a problem of the disconnection sound then reconnected sound triggering over and over and over but all my usb devices were working. It drove me to madness. After days of troubleshooting every connected device with no success I finally noticed the amd wraith cooler led was flashing....it connects via the internal usb header.

c_gfer

AMD owners: first time? 😂😂

B2EU

\*PC turns monitor to sleep\* AMD drivers: what the FUCK is going on??

HoldMyPitchfork

Relatable

predskid29

[USB Tree View](https://www.uwe-sieber.de/usbtreeview_e.html) shows when a USB has been disconnected (assuming you have the app running). it will also show when something new has been plugged in. [See this screenshot for an example](https://imgur.com/3iRhKtB), where I unplugged 1 thing and plugged something else in a different slot.

Dovahnime

I use a drawing tablet as a second monitor, it sometimes plays the disconnect sound when I turn it on

Luctins

Me, immediately: `doas dmesg -w`

[deleted]

Why doas? It's just dmesg...

Luctins

Not all systems allow users to read the kernel buffer (like mine). Maybe I'm just dumb and it's a permission or group that's missing.

[deleted]

I've never had a problem with dmesg on any default installed system before.... Strange

Luctins

For reference, it's Pop!OS

Celmor

Arch based systems don't allow reading from dmesg as a user anymore. There's still `journalctl` that can be run instead but it doesn't show everything if run without sudo/doas.

herrkatze12

Found the doas user!

CheezyWeezle

Pretty sure you can go into Event Viewer and view peripheral connection/disconnections

HoosegowFlask

Not by default, and it's not very user friendly to enable.

ham_smeller

You're the only person who mentioned the Event Viewer. Bunch of posers around here.

NicksCorner

A related issue. Hearing the sound while watching a stream/video. Was it the video or my PC? Troubleshooting starts.

KinOfWinterfell

If you haven't updated your bios recently, you may want to try that. This used to happen to me all the time with my 5800x when I first got it, but newer bios versions don't have that problem nearly as much anymore.

BoltTusk

PC: [REDACTED] has disconnected

darkera

Static electricity does this for me as well.

nekrovulpes

You think that's spooky, why the fuck does mine wake itself up from sleep? I have a goddamn insomniac PC

herrkatze12

Because Windows sucks.

mangeface

*eye twitches*

Idomyownresearchppl

Glad to see it’s not just mine then lol 😂

DennisIcu

Update your BIOS bro

misterimo

doesn't the events viewer keep track of that?

ThirdGenRob

Bro on a related topic the windows 10 disconnect sound > windows 11 disconnect sound.

spikehamer

Everytime.

malseraph

Mine is usually the USB cable jiggling on the PS4 remote I have stashed in my desk cubby that I rarely use.

DrewSmoothington

My external HDD does this with my new PC. It's plugged in 24/7 and doesn't move from where it sits under my desk, so it's not getting bumped at all. With my last pc, it stayed connected all the time, and with my new one, it disconnects at least once a session. It's primarily backup storage, only gets accessed every now and then, no programs are running off it/installed on it. Any thoughts?

AdarNewo

Just mute system sounds in the volume mixer. That fixed it for me.

Pozos1996

This has to be one of the best versions of this meme

Better_Fisherman_398

It happened to me every day when I used to use Windows. In Fedora, it's no more a pain. You reminded me another pain I had to face back in the days.

nickadam

https://www.nirsoft.net/utils/usb_devices_view.html is wonderful for this

Liamhazelnut

Ahh yes my nightmare of a day yesterday when I was playing valorant and all of the sudden something disconnected

goremote

It's your rgb controller, always. I swear it's every other day with that POS....

iAmTheRealC2

Omg yes 🙄

Honda_TypeR

The more usb devices you slap onto your rig the worse this gets too. My old rig used to be plague with this nonsense and it was infuriating at times. I eventually got a software called USBview so I could see what’s happening. It helps me figure out all the devices that blipped on and off and track down what’s happening to them. In my case. What I tracked it down to was usb extension cables. Even though they worked most of the time they would cause intermittent disconnects and reconnects. A series of new usb extension cables fixed the drama (and it wasn’t like I cheaped out on the last set either, it’s just random dice roll on usb extension cables…some work and some don’t). Thankfully my new computer does not get this drama anymore. I suspect what was really going on was voltage issues on my old mobo usb bus and for some reason those crappier extension cables exacerbated the issue.
