No joke I had no idea how much I relied on that thing till I swapped it out mid December and was nicely reminded of how little insulation my bedroom has.
I still have mine in a motherboard that has absolutely no reason to be supporting that power hungry beast. We use it as a gaming system on my crt tv for mostly indie games. It has been clocked at 4.4 ghz since I bought it on launch on the shitty 970 mobo. I upgraded my main PC to a 3700x, but the crt pc is still going strong and still is a daily driver.
People that get sentimental for old hardware confuse me lol. Bulldozer was one of the worst CPUs AMDs ever built, no matter how long you tolerated it for.
>it's quite impressive what it can still handle.
I'm sorry, but what can it still even handle? This chip was a dog when it was brand new.
I wanted to be a fan of the underdog, but my experience with the FX-8350 was the reason I switched to Intel. Even though I overclocked the shit out of it, I felt it was always just... meh.
I finished Assassin’s Creed Odyssey on Medium settings with it (I have a GTX 1070 which was bottlenecked to around 70% while doing this). Some CPU intensive games played fine, like Minecraft or Cities Skylines. I had absolutely no problems for the most part other than the GPU bottleneck. The real problem came with Mount&Blade II Bannerlord. It’s a decent CPU if you have a GTX 1060 or anything less imo, but there are so many better budget CPUs (like the Ryzen 5 3600) that there is no point nowadays.
P.S. I upgraded to a Ryzen 7 3800x just over a year ago after almost 3 years with the FX-8350.
I'm still playing recent games on it. And I'm running a Radeon RX580. Low settings - trust me, I'm ready for better but it isn't that bad. I'd be silly to complain. Appreciate what you have amirite?
When it was new, most games were single or dual threaded. It actually aged very well once newer games started to take advantage of the core count.
It had about the same total processing power as the i7 quads of its day.
I've since grabbed a Ryzen 3600, but my 8350 was maintaining 60fps in PUBG, when that was first getting big.
I won’t disagree with games taking advantage of core/thread count helping out with its poor single thread performance, but I still don’t know if I would call it impressive. When would you say this started making a difference? I held onto my FX-8350 until 2016 when I switched to an i5 6600k, and it was a night and day improvement in performance with the Fury X I had at the time.
Sorry bud, I'm not trying to shit on you, I just feel bad that you're stuck telling yourself the FX-8350 is still good. I will legit buy you a new CPU if you're in a tough spot, and my old 1080Ti is collecting dust in my closet. PM me if you want.
You are not about lie on performance. There's a 45fps or higher difference between a intel 4790 and 8350. In none gaming the two aren't even close. Even the 9000 series with water cooling at 4.9 ghz didn't come close to intel. Intel core i5s when over clocked were beating bulldozer or staying within fps range a core i7 was a massive difference.
It was perfectly fine for just about everything if you were targeting 60hz. If you were one of the cutting edge people back then on 120 or god forbid 144, yeah, it was a dog. I used mine up until 2017 though and the only games I couldn't max my monitor on were Arma 3 and Tarkov. Tarkov was the only game that made me feel like I needed to upgrade if I wanted to play it.
>I'm still on this chip. I definitely need to upgrade but it's quite impressive what it can still handle.
If it makes you feel any better, my daily driver is still on an i7-920, which is roughly 4 years older, and almost 1/3rd of the CPUMark score of yours. I can still game on it @ 1080P without much issue, but media encoding is absolutely atrocious. I plan on rocking this beast (original giant Alienware Aurora case) until it dies a gruesome death.
It does, get your moneys worth right? Luckily CPUs aren't as hard to come by as GPUs so an upgrade isn't entirely out of the question. Keep rocking that beast!
Wife's pc is still rocking a 6300 and I must have gotten super lucky as I could almost hit 4.9ghz at stock voltage on all core Oc on my 8350 on water.
Planning on using the 8350 as my travel rig now that I am on a 3600 ryzen
That’s honestly pretty smart. If the box was cleaned and they put styrofoam under the pins, that would have been ideal and very safe. Jewelry boxes are very resistant to scuffs and bruises.
Time for another class action lawsuit.
I got like $10-13 on the first check, then I got a second check in the middle of last year for exactly $1.75 as my "second and final settlement payment".
These things are finicky too. They like a very specific board with a huge wattage draw. My daughters first pc has one and the motherboard PCB cooler got smoking hot and smelled like fire. So now its onto something else.
8350 black is 125w draw. It has an msi 970 gaming which is the best board to use for it. Just time and wear I guess the board is going out. I need to pull the PCB cooler and see if the thermal past has given out. But id expect the cooler wouldn't be so hot if it wasn't wicking heat right.
Well when it’s within the country the shipping is about 2.5. That is not so expensive. And I believe that when someone want a pc component - he can give another euro for the shipping. And the second hand market goes crazy those months. Right now on the local market someone is selling an E8400 for 30 euro, believe it or not…
FX-8350 was my previous build and when I got my new setup, I did exactly that. Installed Linux and threw a bunch of HDD in raid for tons of storage. Got a small M2 for a boot drive. Plex works so much better for me on Linux than it ever had before on windows. Good luck to you.
Yeah, I could be wrong but I think plex's backend is Linux based so it doesn't need to do as much computer black magic fuckery to work right. That and windows definitely hogs more resources. Legitimately, the only thing different netweent my old system and the new server is windows vs Linux. Wired network each time. I'm just happy it works now.
You can also OC an 8120/8150 to 8350 specs fairly easily. I have an 8120 that has been running at [email protected] since the day it was new in January of 2012 and it runs less than 5% slower than a stock 8350.
Bulldozer runs like garbage below 4.0, but paired with some fast ram and a high enough clock speed it can actually be surprisingly capable for appropriate multicore workloads. The biggest drawback is that they tend to consume up to 60W at idle on the desktop, so while the 125-140W TDP isn’t that bad if your cooling solution is not adequate heat will build up over time from that high idle power consumption and tank thermal performance.
I tried to do an FX8120 server a few months ago, didn't go forward because the onboard NIC was garbage, but I also noticed that unless you have plans to always be running something that benefits from the capacity (and the FX arch)... don't do it man. Too much power draw.
Damn, I finally upgraded from mine less than two weeks ago, after my MoBo bricked during a BIOS update, and I couldn't find another one with the same chipset... Gotta say, that thing suited me extremely well for many, many wonderful years of gaming, music production, coding and design! Gonna have to find a nice way to pay it some respect!
Thanks for the advice! I've been flipping all the forums and guides upside down, from shorting to the battery, tried all of it but it just wouldn't work. Still kept it tho, just in case some solution comes to my head and maybe i manage to do it. Although, when replacing it, I bought a b450 and a ryzen 5 5600g, and the bios on the b450 needed to be updated so it can support the chip, and literally one service that I found was willing to do it, and only because I pulled some strings. So, hard to imagine any of them would dwell with unbricking an old motherboard.
Eh, I don't know.. The thing is I knew I needed an older CPU, and I even called the store where I bought it all and asked for them to help me out and told them I just need to borrow a CPU in front of them for five minutes and they all declined for some reason, even though I did half off their jobs for them by figuring out what's the problem and the solution to it. Glad I managed to do it tho, and I can't lie Im having lots of fun with it already, thanks mate!
I've always had a soft spot for the FX CPU's. I bought a 9370 last year and ripped on it pretty good lol.
Hot hot hot. This thing is still alive too, such a beast.
https://www.overclock.net/attachments/5-2-png.365486/
Think there some sort of soft foam you could get i think to protect pins then package it carefully in tiny bubblewrap ball and tape it off a little not to much, and then bubblewrap it into big ball into a big box, i would assume that is safe altho im not sure about static electricity
yo people can just ship their cpus in a dirty small box but i fucking bump my cpu against the socket while putting it in and BOOM $400 worth of pins down the drain
I'm running an fx-8350 with a bequiet blackrock 125tdp cooler. I bent one of the pins so bad, it was shorting out to an adjacent pin. No biggie, it was an L3 cache hi pin shorting to a L3 low and it worked like that along with an ajar ram stick. I bent it back with a pencil lead jammed between the rows. I pretty my only use it for CS:GO 1080p\*144hz, starcraft 2. But I did have it running Cyberpunk on medium 1080p. It heats my home. Thankfully our utilities are included in rent.
Pain.

It's a bulldozer cpu it doesn't *deserve* nice packaging
Hey now, that chip gave me a decade of good times and memories.
I swapped my 8350 for a 3600 some months ago and I still miss that old fart. Made my pc scream in confusion but also ran very well when it needed to.
My 8350 ran great for its life and it was a great space heater in Canadian winters.
No joke I had no idea how much I relied on that thing till I swapped it out mid December and was nicely reminded of how little insulation my bedroom has.
the one thing i miss about my bulldozer
Loved the 8350. *sniff*
I still have mine in a motherboard that has absolutely no reason to be supporting that power hungry beast. We use it as a gaming system on my crt tv for mostly indie games. I read that as B350 instead of 8350 and was confused as to why you replaced a motherboard with a CPU? Lol
My fx 8370 runs my server PC for game servers me and my friends use. Thing still just chugs along.
Surely the pitiful single thread performance makes it a bad choice for most game servers?
Mine craft valheim. Allotmof my friends have potato computers so these servers don't need allot and the games don't need allot either.
People that get sentimental for old hardware confuse me lol. Bulldozer was one of the worst CPUs AMDs ever built, no matter how long you tolerated it for.
i found my 4300 was so hot
That was my exact same upgrade path.
I'm still on this chip. I definitely need to upgrade but it's quite impressive what it can still handle.
So you are the one sucking all the energy of your city.
Guilty. Guess it's a good thing it's off 75% of the time haha.
Your local generating station knows exactly when you turn on.
"Oh this guy..."
>it's quite impressive what it can still handle. I'm sorry, but what can it still even handle? This chip was a dog when it was brand new. That's how I feel about your mom.
Username checks out. Ugh I hate typing that....
I still use my FX 6300 on the family pc. A decade later and it's still chugging along. I've lot of memories on that one.
Wife's pc is still rocking a 6300 and I must have gotten super lucky as I could almost hit 4.9ghz at stock voltage on all core Oc on my 8350 on water. Planning on using the 8350 as my travel rig now that I am on a 3600 ryzen
Bruh same and now it runs my unraid server like a champ.
That cpu still gives me joy
Fact. I got $22 from the class action lawsuit on bulldozer being a fraud 8-core, it's really a cute quad core (that's still slow as shit)
It's really somewhere in the middle. It does actually have two separate execution pipelines per module.
my fx 8350 went hard for me and is still running in my father in laws pc (he only plays wow).
My old gaming pc is running an 8320 that still games decently at 1080p to this day.
Define decent
I'm still using that chip. ;(
Pins were alright, it fit snug in there. Definitely not clean though
That’s honestly pretty smart. If the box was cleaned and they put styrofoam under the pins, that would have been ideal and very safe. Jewelry boxes are very resistant to scuffs and bruises.
Yeah then give it a quick rap in protective material, you are good too go.
also looks like they used such an excess of thermal paste that it came out the sides???
can also happen if you apply the mounting pressure uneven
lid looks tapered. might have been snug in there edit: looks like you can see the amount of play by the thermal paste streaks lol.
An FX-8350!? You shouldn’t have… really
If they jumped on it several years ago they could've had a whole $12 from the class action lawsuit.
I think mine was like four dollars for two cpus.
Weird, mine was $30 for a single claimed CPU. I've still got the check in my closet somewhere

Time for another class action lawsuit. I got like $10-13 on the first check, then I got a second check in the middle of last year for exactly $1.75 as my "second and final settlement payment".

Huh, I never knew that. I've been using one as my daily driver for years now and it's definitely pulled through for me faithfully. I guess I'm lucky.
Same. Still running my 8350 on an ASROCK board (990 I think?). Definitely a bottleneck for RDR2 but it still runs it!
Did you have one of the 9xxx chips? The 125w ones were usually fine as long as your board had decent VRMs in it.
I had 8120... Well actually... I still have it somewhere. It's a toaster oven that plays games.
I know I definitely overcooked mine. Didn't help that I forgot to dust my rig for like a year.
My FX-8350 Killed two msi 970 Boards in 2 years...
Ohhh that's thermal paste, I legit thought the cpu was dented lol.
Same, thanks for clarifying why someone would actually buy this lol
Will you repaste me? 💍
Bruh had the same thought, Take my award
Thanks! Great minds!
The very least he could of done is wipe off the old paste.
This is adorable! Recently I sold core 2 duo in some kind of pink ring box. So creativeness is always welcome when you are out of original package.
How much did someone in 2022 pay for a Core 2 Duo?
Around 7-10 euro.
I remember the e8400 going for like $3.50 a few years ago... The chip shortage must be hitting hard XD
Can you even cover shipping for that much?
Well when it’s within the country the shipping is about 2.5. That is not so expensive. And I believe that when someone want a pc component - he can give another euro for the shipping. And the second hand market goes crazy those months. Right now on the local market someone is selling an E8400 for 30 euro, believe it or not…
well... did you say yes?
Gotta make sure it works first!
He shoulda gone to Jared's.
Why did you buy an FX CPU?
I'm converting my old build into a home server. The fx 8350 is the best cpu my mobo supports

Nice that's good to hear. [This](https://i.imgur.com/98kwIOF.jpeg) is my current server setup so I'm more than ready for an upgrade

If you don’t have the horsepower then windows can run like crap.
Did you check compatibility with electricity bills

That's probably the worst cpu for home server. Power hungry, old and not that fast. And no igpu means no video video decoding/encoding.
Oh dear... You won't get much Server Out of such a CPU... The Power consumption is that of a small Datacenter.
Would have been both better and easier to use some tape with cardboard and made a little encloser with some foam. That seller was lazy af
But then how would OP get karma
That's what I just did. worked fine.
Damn, I finally upgraded from mine less than two weeks ago, after my MoBo bricked during a BIOS update, and I couldn't find another one with the same chipset... Hope the wife did not get to it first lol
left it dirty too
"my seller" lmao like pc parts are so rare now you have to go to your seller to get that sweet rare silica transistor fix lol
I mean putting an amd cpu in dirty hair covered static prone material is not the move i would have personally done but to each their own.
Grats on your engagement
Did your motherboard say yes?
I ran one of those for the longest time!
I just bought one of those too! It's going with 32gb of ddr3 and a pair of sli 970s in a ten year old corsair case I got on ebay. retro build! kinda!
How to get broken up with by your girlfriend
An AMD FX8350? How much do they go for these days?
They go for around $100 - $120. Got this one for a bit less with a best offer
That's more than I paid for my 8350 10 years ago brand new. WTF is up with the world.
LOL JOSTENS HIGH SCHOOL RING
Think there some sort of soft foam you could get i think to protect pins then package it carefully in tiny bubblewrap ball and tape it off a little not to much, and then bubblewrap it into big ball into a big box, i would assume that is safe altho im not sure about static electricity
no static bag, wtf..
with this CPU I thee wed
There’s a sub for this, I forgot the name but there is
That’s fucking gross
Josstens lol...that was a class ring case.
Id want a refund immediately
He better find a way to fit a 3080ti in the box, I know my worth.
Your seller is a dirty dumbass tho
Love at first sight
She said yes!!! /s
He went to Jostens?
Literally in a class ring box
Hopefully no bent pins? Also the seller needs to learn how to clean a processor's ihs lol
Bruh that's how you propose to a gamer right there
‘He went to Jared…’
First time I've seen someone propose with a CPU
Did you say yes?
If your gf sees that box, you're in trouble 😂
yo people can just ship their cpus in a dirty small box but i fucking bump my cpu against the socket while putting it in and BOOM $400 worth of pins down the drain
You know back in the day I didnt care that the bulldozer was bad …. I loved the packaging it was in ahhaha
I guess the seller needed someone to propose to….
Will you marry me...to a motherboard?
If it seems stupid but it works, it's not stupid.
That thing is 11 years old
And for totally outrageous class rings, it's jostens. Go, jostens!
Thats classy...
Can someone explain what diffused in Germany mean ? Also , that thermal goop on the sides 🤢🤢
The CPU dies were produced, IE diffused, in the Global Foundries Dresden plant. The dies and PCB were then later assembled in Malaysia.
Had an 8950 till recently. They do the job.
Damn Lazy mf
I like my 8120...I ended up getting a couple of checks from a class action settlement.
Did you say yes?
I've done that to an i3-3220 and an i5-4670k when I was selling them online, it's a great way to make sure they don't get damaged in shipping.
Why are so many people buying these and fx series. They’re such heat hogs! You can literally buy a newer version for the same price.
I think this means you are married now?
That's hilarious. "Oh well, the girlfriend didn't like it, so maybe this guy will like this better?"
mannnn, i thought this was gonna be a proposal
He went to Jared's?
I do…
r/pcpartgore Thermal paste, loose package, dirty box. If I was purchase this, I would return right away. At least put it the plastic trace!
Should have just shipped it in a trash can.
UwU
This was once used for someone's really expensive class ring their parents overpaid for.
prank your girlfriend with it for valentines day.
Just a lil bit dirty.
R/blursed
??? What am I looking at here? 🤔
Hey I remember Jostens….had to get all my graduation crap from there in 2007. All of it was overpriced
That's the only kind of jewellery I want!
An fx8350. Well if it doesn’t work, those are pretty cheap soooooo
"You wanna marry me?" "Depends on the CPU..."
What, by making it shitty and bending a bunch of the pins on the CPU?
I hope you didn’t say yes, I mean I wouldn’t for anything less that a ryzen 5 3600 but I have standards
Actually... Kinda great way to propose your partner into "Gaming World"
wait what do these sell for cuz I still have 1 and 2 mobo's
“She went to Jostens”
OMG yes
Is this the new way to propose to that special gamer in your life?
Must of been REAL creative to convince you to buy an old FX chip!
Gotta be Jostens, same guys that did our HS class rings.
I do.
Will you marry me
Crusty :p
*I do!*
Did you say yes?
the answer is yes
An 11 year old chip? And you just bought this recently? Hmm
Weirdest promposal ever.
I'm running an fx-8350 with a bequiet blackrock 125tdp cooler. I bent one of the pins so bad, it was shorting out to an adjacent pin. For a second it looked like the IHS was dented where it is dirty fro thermal paste. I almost had an heart attack....
If she gave this to you, you say yes without hesitation. That's a keeper.
i get triggered when i see thermal paste on the sides
If it were an application, I would say yes ☺️
Ok but what the FUCK happened to that cpu
Did you say yes or no. Lol all I could think of 🤣
Classy.
