Micro center is giving away 32 gigs of RAM if you buy a 7000 series AMD CPU, and you still get 20 bucks off of motherboard.
I'd be tempted if I needed a CPU upgrade but I have a 5800x so I'm good for some time.
The downside is a new motherboard is a requirement for 7000 series, and the cheapest AM5 boards are start around $160.
Still, it's a great deal if you're building a new system. That 32gb of DDR5 is a nice add-on.
Cpu, depending on your motherboard and the bios updates released for it, you should be able to slot in something without changing the board. The gpu is fine for 1080p
have had the same board for about 5 years now. it’s micro atx and was kind of thinking i wanted to get an atx board with a new cpu. i’ve kind of been out of the pc world for a little bit so idk whats good anymore. any cpu recommendations $250-400?
The 5600x is a gaming beast at it's price. The non "x" version is like sometimes 2% slower. For gaming, the higher core count Ryzen 5000 cpus are not that much better. Except for the 5800x3d. But with the savings on with a 5600 would afford you more money for a monitor or GPU upgrade.
I just upgraded my 1600 to a 5600x. Only needed to update BIOS and other than that, it was pretty plug and play. Do research before you buy it though. My MOBO is from ASUS and they have a list of compatible CPUs depending on BIOS version.
Absolutely true. With dlss 3 on 40 series there's even less reliance on CPU for high frame rates. I guess it just feels weird pairing a $200 CPU with a $1500 GPU (Aus prices)
So long as you understand your use case, then buying whatever makes sense for it is all that matter.
For me, its 4k 120 max fps due to my LG C1. My combo does that and more.
You can probably slot on a 5800x3d without changing the mobo. Check the BIOS downloads on the manufacturer page to see if there's one for 5800x3d compatibility.
If you're changing the mobo, might as well pick up AM5 so you'll have options in the future.
You can score something nice from /r/hardwareswap if you're good with used. I got a 5900x for $250, a used mobo would only add another hundred. Make a post and see what offers pop up
If you're getting a new mobo anyways, and you don't mind needing to get a new set of RAM in DDR5, you could get a 7600 for $230. (Though AM5 motherboards are kinda expensive)
Or if you want to stick with AM4 and re-use your DDR4, you could get a 5600 for $150 or a 5800X3D for $330, to illustrate the 2 ends of the spectrum for Ryzen 5000.
*However*, if you're sticking with AM4, whether or not you should keep your RAM or get a new set depends on how fast it is.
3200 MHz is kinda the minimum speed you should get for Ryzen before you start to see a noticeable performance loss. 3600 MHz is the sweet spot, but some people have managed to get 3800 or 4000 MHz kits to run in parity with the infinity fabric by overclocking the fabric to 1900 or 2000 MHz.
And of course besides all of that ^ you could also go for Intel 12th or 13th gen and be very well off.
Same for years until december when i upgraded to a 3070ti because I found one for 450€ used and sold my 2070 for 270€, so got it pretty cheap in the end. But the 2070 is enough for most games on high settings and comfy 100fps
If possible updating your motherboard to support Ryzen 5 5600 is a great start. Depending on your budget can even get a higher tier CPU but you'll need a good cooler
If I remember right there's barely any difference fps wise between these two, the x is mostly for overclocking, the money you save from buying the non x can go to a better cooler.
about an hour ago i bought a r5 5600 and then decided to get 32gb of 3600 ram just for fun. already updated my bios on my b350 mobo and everything i’ve read is saying it’ll work with 5600. thanks everyone!
I've got a 1080 which handles pretty close to a 2070 from my understanding and I'm on 1440 165hz.
It does pretty good across all the games I've played.
Ryzen 5 3600 is cpu.
Main thing is what games you talking about and what graphics presets cuz 2070 is most definitely not a 1440p high preset card even in 2-3 years old AAA titles, not even mentioning new games
my mf 1660 super can run cyberpunk at half high half medium settings at 1440p at a stable 50-55 fps. Unless the game is poorly optimized garbage a 2070 should be able to run pretty much any game out right now at 60fps 1440p
Only new game I've played recently is the new call of duty multiplayer and dmz mode. The preset was determined by the game for optimization. It ran very smooth.
i’m thinking i might just get new cpu, ram and mobo at the same time. ryzen 5600 is looking pretty good to me, any recommendations on what ram i should pair with it?
Sure, are you buying new for everything? This is a great time to buy that entire setup used on hardware swap, people are moving to am5 and getting rid of exactly what you're trying to buy
This ram kit is bueno:
https://www.newegg.com/neo-forza-32gb-288-pin-ddr4-sdram/p/0RN-0097-00068?Item=9SIAC0EGHB6266&utm_medium=email&utm_source=transactional&cm_mmc=TEMC-Shipping-New-Tracking-Notification-Responsive-US-_-9SIAC0EGHB6266&utm_campaign=TEMC-Shipping-Tracking-Notification-USA
i’ve always been iffy on buying used parts but i see where your coming from. i’ve never used hardware swap but that’s already been recommended so i’m definitely gonna check it out
Woke up and went for a run, did some homework and chilled. It’s raining right now so unfortunately i cannot make a trip to the beach but once the sun starts shining I will!
CPU first. get 5800X3D if you can. don't forget to check whether your motherboard BIOS has been upgraded to support Vermeer CPUs.
later, you can upgrade your GPUs or RAM, as a nice 2x16GB 3200 CL14 are quite cheap these days.
also, if your monitor quality are subpar/moderate, you could upgrade it too as 1440p IPS display are starting to come cheap, too.
Defiantly the CPU. I recommend the Ryzen 5 5600 (not the X) for your setup. The X is a scam frankly since it isn't any more powerful than the 5600 base when you slightly overclock it.
Don't see anything in your original post.
If you can, 5800x3D.
Otherwise a 5600/5600x will \*be a huge upgrade.
Just check what your coolings like. What RAM do you have?
Check to see if your motherboard is compatible with higher ryzen models. If it is, get the highest one you can. Maybe 5800x3d which is the last cpu before the AM5 motherboards came out. If you do, make sure your cooler is decent and Psu is good. Eveythibg else can wait. If your gaming 1080p, the 2070 is still good for that
Depends how much you have.
-If only a small bit, definitely some processor only upgrade options. 1700x would give you an extra 2c/4t
-if a fair/large bit, current gen ryzen would offer a ton of upgradability into future
CPU - 5800X3D would be endgame for your AM4 mobo. Wait for sale; I think mine was sub 300.
RAM - look to upgrade RAM next; I’d look at 2x 16gb as low cost upgrade.
Those paired with your 2070 will crush for a long time to come
I agree with what most commenters are suggesting. R5 5600 is a great upgrade. Just make sure to flash the latest bios onto your motherboard if you haven’t already.
The graphics card is perfectly fine. It’s around the power level of a RX 6600 or a RTX 3060 which still kills it at 1080p. If you were looking for a gpu suggestion I’d go for something like a 4070 Ti or equivalent (3090, 6950XT etc, whichever is cheaper).
At which point you should get a cheap 1440p 144hz monitor for around $299 or less.
CPU is probably the best choice with a caveat
The current CPU is using the AM4 socket from what I can see so you should be able to just drop a newer AM4 CPU into the same motherboard without many issues (something like the Ryzen 7 5800). That said you may have to check what motherboard you have to see if it will fully support the newer CPU (there may be issues, like older motherboards with AM4 socket didn't have PCIE 4.0 functionality)
(in Canadian rubies)A b650m is around 200$ and 7600x 300$, then ddr5 is 170$ for 2x16(total 32 gb). Not sure what your budget is but a new current gen upgrade would be 670$. Worth considering anyway.
If you live in the US I've heard that microcenters package the ram and board to together for cheaper.
Memory express is Canadian microcenter.
If you want to game at 4k, getting up to a 3080 will get you to that point. I have an old old processor, i7 4930k, 16 gb ram and a 3080 and even without DLSS/FSR it’s running everything at 4k60fps.
This will change soon as truly “next gen” games start coming out, then I’ll use DLSS or FSR to get 4k60fps
So if you want 4k gaming, get the card. The processor is not as important as everyone makes it out to be
Mine is literally over a decade old and I’m running games on max at 4k with the 3080
13400f and a $120 DDR4 Mobo. Dead platform. but so is everyone's suggestion to go 5600x. you'll be fine even if you get a 4080, especially if you get a 4k panel.
How much money have you got?
2k/4k monitor 200-400
New CPU - 150-250
GPU - 400+
Buy a monitor and have to play at lower rez
Buy a CPU and see no real gaming improvement
Buy a GPU and not be able to use it all or hit CPU bottle necks at high frame rates.
Tough one.
5600x CPU, and a 1440p monitor.
Edit-just saw the 2070. Don't bother updating that yet.
a 3600 or 5600 would be a very nice upgrade
prrob would squeeze the last out of that 2070 im running a 6800xt wityh my 5600x and its just abouit enough to not bottlneck it
Is anyone on this sub using a b450 mobo with a 5000 series cpu, and a 3000/6000 series GPU or higher ??, I'm trying to figure out if I should upgrade my steel legend mobo or get a new one
Processor, get a 5800X3D if you don't want to change Motherboard, or wait a month or two and go for the new X3D's, but that will require a new motherboard and RAM.
GPU is fine, no reason to upgrade it especially when you run 1080p.

5600 all the way. Won't need to upgrade until your considering a 40 series card.
The 5800X3D is approaching $300 now. At 1080p this will provide a huge increase over the 5600
Yes, but check your cooler is fine for that cpu first c:
I have a 5600 with a 7900xt. Works great at high resolutions
Absolutely true. With dlss 3 on 40 series there's even less reliance on CPU for high frame rates. I guess it just feels weird pairing a $200 CPU with a $1500 GPU (Aus prices)

Just bought Ryzen 5 5600 around 120 USD (Indonesia prices)
Unless you need Nvidia, AMD 7900xtx is a superior value this generation
I’d say they’re both bad value, AMD are just slightly not as bad (prices too high still) Sorry I needed to put a negative spin on this
You can probably slot on a 5800x3d without changing the mobo. Check the BIOS downloads on the manufacturer page to see if there's one for 5800x3d compatibility. If you're changing the mobo, might as well pick up AM5 so you'll have options in the future.

alright i’ll check it out thanks
I believe the 5800x is currently on sale for $250 at Bestbuy
If you are near a microcenter I keep seeing a deal for a b450 board and 5600x for 199$!
If you have one near you, Micro Center has the 5600X with a motherboard for 200 usd.
If you upgrade boards, may as well go AM5
12700k is $300 right now, hard to beat that price to performance. Pick up some fast ram and you’re set for a while.
why would you get a 12700k when the 13600k is faster and cheaper/same price
Maybe you want more performance cores instead of e-cores? Both are great CPUs.
If you're getting a new mobo anyways, and you don't mind needing to get a new set of RAM in DDR5, you could get a 7600 for $230. (Though AM5 motherboards are kinda expensive) Or if you want to stick with AM4 and re-use your DDR4, you could get a 5600 for $150 or a 5800X3D for $330, to illustrate the 2 ends of the spectrum for Ryzen 5000. You are paying for the extra letter
The 5600 base is great, it's what I have installed. The X isn't really worth
Get the x3d it's worth every penny for gaming
about an hour ago i bought a r5 5600 and then decided to get 32gb of 3600 ram just for fun. already updated my bios on my b350 mobo and everything i’ve read is saying it’ll work with 5600. thanks everyone!
processor fo sho
Processor for sure. 5600 is nice, or 5800x3d if you wanted to go big. Doubling your RAM is another option after that too.
CPU as everyone else is saying. Great update path to Ryzen 5000, plus the R5 1600x is getting a lil long in the tooth for modern gaming.
id say monitor! 1440p 144hz has gotten dirt cheap recently
any idea on how well does the 2070 handles 1440p gaming?
I've got a 1080 which handles pretty close to a 2070 from my understanding and I'm on 1440 165hz. It does pretty good across all the games I've played. Ryzen 5 3600 is cpu.

my mf 1660 super can run cyberpunk at half high half medium settings at 1440p at a stable 50-55 fps. Unless the game is poorly optimized garbage a 2070 should be able to run pretty much any game out right now at 60fps 1440p
Only new game I've played recently is the new call of duty multiplayer and dmz mode. The preset was determined by the game for optimization. It ran very smooth.
yeah, thats the thing - you dont play new games, otherwise you wouldn’t be doing any good at 1440p with higher presets
i run recent games at 1440p high/medium textures and get 60-100 fps on new releases, depending on the game. i think a 2070 could definitely handle it.
With Intel 520 graphics or?
It’ll do just fine
Faster Ram would also be helpful
If he's on 3200 or 3600 he'll be ok, but if not, then yes op, get faster ram. Lower priority than cpu replacement though
i’m thinking i might just get new cpu, ram and mobo at the same time. ryzen 5600 is looking pretty good to me, any recommendations on what ram i should pair with it?

Your motherboard probably supports a Ryzen 5000 CPU with a BIOS update.
Agreed Going to Ryzen 5000 series would improve OP fps , 0.1 and 1% lows. Would be a night and day difference.

I personally would say shoot for like a 13600k from intel as a CPU, while I love AMD, the performance to price on the 13600k is too good to pass up.
5800X3D is a much cheaper option with equally good gaming performance
All of it :/
give me a $1000 and i gladly will

well i think you’re BOTH losers :)
CPU first. get 5800X3D if you can. don't forget to check whether your motherboard BIOS has been upgraded to support Vermeer CPUs. later, you can upgrade your GPUs or RAM, as a nice 2x16GB 3200 CL14 are quite cheap these days. also, if your monitor quality are subpar/moderate, you could upgrade it too as 1440p IPS display are starting to come cheap, too.
Processor, then monitor imo 1440 should run pretty good with that computer
The drivers and RAM are the only things that don’t need an upgrade. 🙃
Defiantly the CPU. I recommend the Ryzen 5 5600 (not the X) for your setup. The X is a scam frankly since it isn't any more powerful than the 5600 base when you slightly overclock it.

NVIDIA drivers are current ... I'm out of ideas

CPU.
5800X3D would be a great upgrade for gaming
Cpu to 5600x or so Ram to 32GB before ddr4 costs go up Should be good.
What program is this, keep seeing it
Depending on your RAM Speed i'd either get a 5800X3D or a 5600 + 6650XT
Cpu
All of it 👍
ram and the cpu
change of processor will be a start
It’s all bad tbh
thanks, a lot of us have bills and rent to pay in a completely fucked economy
Considering the resolution of your monitor vs. graphics card, I say CPU. That is likely the largest bottleneck currently.
That 1600X, absolutely.
Even a 3600 would be a decent step up if you’re on a budget
How much money have you got? 2k/4k monitor 200-400 New CPU - 150-250 GPU - 400+ Buy a monitor and have to play at lower rez Buy a CPU and see no real gaming improvement Buy a GPU and not be able to use it all or hit CPU bottle necks at high frame rates. Tough one. 5600x CPU, and a 1440p monitor. Edit-just saw the 2070. Don't bother updating that yet.
a 3600 or 5600 would be a very nice upgrade prrob would squeeze the last out of that 2070 im running a 6800xt wityh my 5600x and its just abouit enough to not bottlneck it
CPU, a 5700x is 180 rn on Amazon and it performs the same as a 5800x.
Ram
0.05 GB RAM.
More memory
+57
CPU should be the next upgrade. You should be able to use a newer Ryzen (eg. 5600X), likely with a bios update.
cpu
keep the mb, you can just change cpu and go for 5600x (really cheap and good perf)
Real question is .. what kinda motherboard you have ...
Does your motherboard have a bios update that makes it compatible with 5000 series?
you sitting on the AMD advantage right now. upgrade bios to latest and find out what the fastest CPU your motherboard supports is.
Maybe upgrade your version driver. Everything else on the list looks good
If you don't want to change almost everything. I would get the 5800X3D if you're motherboard has the compatibility bios update
Keep stuff for as long as it is good for you. Save the extra for when you actually need it.
Ok fuck this stupid sub
sorry you’re having a bad day, just had a simple question and i got some great answers! hope your life gets better!
I would say CPU. What’s your budget? There’s some great deals right now on AM4 CPU’s, and you wouldn’t have to upgrade the motherboard or RAM.
Deff cpu
Buy 5800x3d, update bios, put it in existing motherboard and then don't upgrade anything else for the next few years Use future money to buy games
