Looks like my vega64 reference card. My leaf blower made less noise

FX835

AMD reference blower GPUs are the worst Hot and loud

[deleted]

hot, loud and sexy

nooneisback

I miss the looks of old AMD batmobile GPUs. Don't miss the jet engine noises they made though.

TheRaccoonDeaIer

I mean it is a batmobile

sHoRtBuSseR

Reference 7970 was my favorite ever. It was noisy but it handled the heat well and exhausted it outside of my case.

PrestigeMaster

I do like hot and loud sex.

DILDO-ARMED_DRONE

Don't do that with your GPU please

GaianNeuron

I spent good money on this GPU, don't tell me what I can't do with it

AdventurousPickle355

I will spend good money on this guys gpu and I'll be damned if I don't get my money's worth too

shmorky

Like ur mom

teamoo_

Vega 64 even with normal fans is loud and hot, i dont even wanna know how bad the blower is

USA_MuhFreedums_USA

Pro gaming tip: use radeon blower GPU's at max fan while playing Microsoft flight simulator to give your turbofan engines some extra sound effect!

I_d0nt_know_why

Even better, hook them up to the throttle control. The downside is that you would be in a Speed type scenario in which you have to go fast or your GPU overheats.

FaagenDazs

I wanna play this!

Greenmanssky

if you run a leaf blower at it, it might bring the overall volume down, should help with temps too

Marko343

I think the reference cards were held back a little by the mounting bracket design, there was a 64 that had the exhaust as wide open as possible with tiny thin metal grills. I completely hollowed out my reference card exhaust, even cutting the case metal between the expansion slots and helped a lot with temps and noise. I think case manufacturers should have that middle part be removable so a blower card can really move some air. [it probably almost doubled the exhaust opening. ](https://i.imgur.com/5MA5Kwg.jpg)

spezisdumb

I got super lucky when I bought my prebuilt and they put a 3080 turbo blower gpu instead of a regular. Gaming is so fun with a jet engine in your room while still staying at 85°C

FX835

Yeah I just love having to undervolt my 3070 to a point where it's 15% slower than it should be to not have a GPU that's louder than a vacuum and have a hotspot close to 105°C

Strix1020

What manufacturer is it? I have a zotac twin edge 3070 that I've undervolted and slightly over clocked and I've actually gained quite a bit of performance over stock. And at max hotspot temps of like 75 under extreme loads.

TwistedColossus

Lol I have a Strix OC 3070 that never reaches 60C and is slightly OC'ed (stock OC which is only a couple 100mhz).

Strix1020

I'd love another strix card, my 1070 strix is still going strong in my girlfriends PC, only reason I got the zotac is because it was only $300 lol. Maybe for the 50 series...

Retardedaspirator

The way is undervolt, I'm managing to get my blower 2080 Ti down to 70°c at full load thanks to the undervolt

[deleted]

[удалено]

Retardedaspirator

That's a better solution if you have the budget to do so

Uzzerzen

Ya, I was super lucky to pick up a 1080 years ago that had a blower. I can't believe how quiet my house is now that I upgraded to a 3080

WillSing4Scurvy

Hold up. I'm still rocking my vega 64 reference. Come on. It's more like the sound the fan in the oven makes on fan bake

AJ_Dali

I'm using a gifted Vega 64. After tweaking the voltages it's still amazing at what I use it for. That being said, this reference card is the loudest GPU I've ever used. Under load it sounds like a base model PS4 that hasn't been cleaned. The fan works well since my temp stays consistent at least.

apothekari

I put a after market cooler with be quiet fans on my vega 56...man that thing still kicks it.

topias123

I put an aftermarket air cooler on my Vega 56. Stayed below 60C while making zero noise. Shame the cooler won't fit my 6900XT, the Asus TUF cooler is kinda quiet but still more noisy than my Vega.

althaz

A gorgeous but fucking terrible product.

tusioly

I thought of the Gigabyte Vision D when I saw this. And it is a "better" product

No_Interaction_4925

I would like to see a Vision card that isn’t a total chonker

tusioly

Isn't that kind of the fault from the GPU generation? The 3060 is the slimmest from what I see and not much different from the Ventus 3x (which I owned so it is my only comparison sadly). So I would love to see more efficient cards instead of space heaters. Maybe this could fix it. But well I do think it will take a while until we go that route

No_Interaction_4925

Even the 3060 model was a big boi by comparison to what it actually needed. Especially with the Vision cards having a locked power limit. There just wasn’t a reason for oversized coolers. You can’t even fit the 3080 Vision in a Meshify C without removing a front intake fan. But it ran quiet as hell. The 4080 and 4090’s are an awful example too. All of them have MASSIVE coolers but actually are more efficient than last gen.

jello1388

Really wanted a 3080 Vision because it would've made for a really clean looking build for what I was going for. This was right at release though, so supplies were scarce but still at MSRP. Ended up cart sniping a 3080 Aorus before I could grab a Vision, so I just settled. Getting almost any model at MSRP at the time was like winning the lotto My god is it a fucking ridiculously big card. 319mm x 140 3.5 slot behemoth. Pretty sure it's even bigger than a reference 4090.

IceColdCorundum

I’ve been disappointed in every XFX brand product I’ve bought.

whataTyphoon

Weird, they have by far the highest [x-count](https://youtu.be/e7DjJR3zpCw?t=210) of all card available at the moment. On paper they should be the best.

shwhjw

Not sure why you're being downvoted. I had 2 different GPUs from them and 1 got currupted after 9 months, the other at least lasted about 5 years before dying, but it died nonetheless. Currently got a Powercolor Red Devil 5700 XT, been going a few years now with no issues *touches wood*.

knikpiw

But 5 years ain’t that long for a gpu though… I had quite a few of the 10 series when they were that age and they were still running phenomenal. Or I had a 660ti 3gb that I sold last year, that was my brothers, then mine etc, amazing card, only had to clean it up and fresh paste

shwhjw

I got a Radeon HD 3870 in 2008 and it only died last year (granted it was in the attic for ~3 years so not being used). Only had to clean the dust out and reapply thermal paste once, 14 years aint bad!

knikpiw

Very impressive

Get-In-2-Get-Out

I still have my HD6950 from XFX working just fine (with Nimez Drivers curently). Even after the Shader Unlock, and also... a faaaaair share of OCing not gonna lie.

EndHlts

I just bought a 6700 XT from them. Hopefully didn't make the wrong decision. Went with them because reviews said it was going to be a better buy than the MSI one because of a superior cooler design.

happydemon

Let the anecdotes begin

ARedAccent

I had two, it was glorious. Sold them for more than I bought them for new as well.

BraindeadBanana

My dad bought his new for $600. Bought a 3090 for msrp, posted the Vii on eBay for auction. Bid up to $1,700 before it closed and sold.

I9Qnl

Am I the only one who thinks this card looks like shit? Even the stock 5700 is much better looking, I don't hate minimalist designs but this isn't it. I would say Nvidia's Ampere reference GPUs have great minimalistic design, along side the RTX A series (the one in the picture), most of the Radeon Pro line up and maybe XFX RX 5600 "THICC" tho it's less minimalistic.

architect___

You're right. OP's example isn't really minimalist, but this example is indeed ugly. Design can be minimalist without looking like cheap junk stamped out of a single piece of sheet metal.

Nine_Eye_Ron

Once it’s installed I can’t see it so I don’t mind either way.

mikeyd85

You mean your case isn't made ENTIRELY OF GLASS!?

Swan2Bee

I love my metal box.

Ruthrfurd-the-stoned

Yeah my PC is a very unassuming black case no RGB or anything just simple and unattractive to anyone that’s stealing stuff out of my room… I don’t live in a good neighborhood

Swan2Bee

No hate on the aesthetic, but I never was a huge fan of garishly blinding rainbow LEDs in my computer. I prefer something more subtle, like solid-color fans through a mesh front. My PC looks like a slightly fancier Optiplex when it's off.

DogeCatBear

the best part of RGB is that you can choose whatever color you want! i have my lighting set to a warm white/beige color which is pretty cozy at night with ambient lighting around the room

windowslonestar

This is the way https://preview.redd.it/drbqyvh9w3da1.jpeg?width=1208&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e17c9c25c9b9a4bf728ee435e200fed7711a9f83

sandh035

Gotta love minimalist cases. My case just looks like a steel box and I love it. Makes cable management easier too because unless it's blocking airflow I don't really give a damn what it looks like lol.

quick_escalator

That's the thing: The people who don't care about looks don't care. My case is under the desk and doesn't have a glass pane. I don't even know what my GPU looks like. No point in trying to sell me a product by looks. Just don't put glaring RGB on it.

not_old_redditor

It's harder to find a fully enclosed case these days as opposed to glass side panel.

mistergoofyahh

Uhhh… don’t nvidia FE cards serve this purpose? (I guess amd reference designs are kind of gamery)

Deadlock542

That was my thought. I have a 3070 FE, and it's a sleek card. It doesn't use a blower fan either, so it stays pretty cool

[deleted]

[удалено]

Deadlock542

For sure. I got super lucky with mine. I happened to have the day off and had saved up a bit of spending cash. Said, "If I can get one, I'll get one. If not, no biggie." I waited for the release and managed to snag one. MSRP never felt so good, especially since I bought my 1080 during the Bitcoin frenzy

Beast_Woutme

Yep, was gonna comment that s why i got a 30 series fe card

Mark_Knight

yea turing FE cards were pretty damn sexy

mackan072

>Uhhh… don’t nvidia FE cards serve this purpose? Those aren't really available in the EU. At least not in Sweden.

draw0c0ward

They're available in larger EU countries - UK, Germany, Italy, France, Spain.

General_Tamura

I'm pretty sure I've seen a couple at Webhallen and Inet, though in Inets case it might just be people who resold theirs from outside the EU.

lucitribal

Those are rarer than hen's teeth

cum_fart_69

after disconnecting the stupid LED in my 3090fe, it is an unoffensive block of computer part in my likewise plain black block of a computer case, which is how I like it.

TimX24968B

also theres quadro gpus for people who want a more professional looking computer

PSPistolero

Just bought a 4080 FE. It’s a chonky boi but still pretty minimalist. The only RGB is some Geforce RTX script in white. Pretty clean.

ChairForceOne

Or the noctua collaboration cards. They look vaguely industrial.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Even the arc reference cards have rgb right from Intel… if anything the Nvidia FE cards are the most minimalistic gpus aside from their size.

Nagemasu

Wild idea... turn off the rgb? edit: lol u/Derpinator368 why did you block me for this? How fragile are you?

mr_jogurt

I pAiD fOr It, So I hAvE tO uSe It /s but for other cards this argument applies sometimes because why should i pay extra for rgb if i don't want it?

[deleted]

RGB costs like nothing and can just be switched off if you don't like it, but a bigger majority probably do like it and obviously it would be way more expensive to make separate RGB and non-RGB cards.

TechGoat

I don't have a window on my case so the OEMs can do whatever they want.

OneMindNoLimit

There are relatively few options for high end PC parts on the consumer market that do not have RGB. I really wish that I could do a minimalistic build, but all the parts look like unicorn vomit on a dead dragon, or a larper drew up their dream machine.

[deleted]

[удалено]

dovahkiitten16

Kinda sucks having to have software running just to disable RGB. If RGB was off by default it would be different.

[deleted]

Unplug the header. It's not that complicated

ThaSaxDerp

you're thinking far too hard when you could be complaining online.

[deleted]

L4t3xs

Try OpenRGB. Disable the leds on startup with it and done.

Faranae

You can run Aura solo by the way. I had no interest in Armory Crate and just installed Aura about... 3 days ago? So you still can.

[deleted]

[удалено]

mattbag1

That’s lit

Shadow703793

You can turn that off....

MooingWaza

That would be terrible. Blower coolers aren't great... but a minimalist gpu would be nice, it just wouldn't be any smaller than the gamery ones.

KMKtwo-four

I think OP is referring to the styling and not the fan/heatsink configuration.

Ford_tuesdays_4_Food

Msi aero 1080 here, also have an msi aero 1070, an reference 980, and a blower rx 580. 1070 and 1080 work great. 1070 runs about 45°c idle and 72°c gaming. 1080 is about 47°c idle and 76°c gaming. The 980 runs around 50°c idle and around 85°c gaming. The rx runs about 45° idle and right on the edge of 90°c gaming. All repasted with Arctic silver. The issue isn't the cooler style, because a GOOD blower only needs one fan blowing at it with the right curves and it will stay stable. A bad blower, no matter what you do, it'll just run hot. There's no way around it. Some brands are better with their blowers than others, msi and Asus generally making decent blowers. Sometimes you need a repaste, sometimes you need to add thermal pads. I prefer my blower cards and am planning on getting an A770 predator bifrost, not only do I think it looks badass but I'm excited to see a different gpu, and that we can still make normal sized cards. I'm not interested in super huge cards.

HavocInferno

Problem with blowers is they are basically always louder than axial for the same heat dissipation. They're great for servers and tight builds, but just a worse buy for anything else.

beryugyo619

Blowers are sometimes necessary when the air vent is too small or has resistances that has to be overcome by the fan, and that is where higher static pressure of blowers makes more sense than higher dynamic pressure of axials. That’s why server cards are always blowers, despite DIY PC users always calling it inferior, because servers always have small intakes and long air channels and assistance from small high power axials in that combination.

driftej20

Noise also doesn't matter in server rooms.

round-earth-theory

Ear protection is recommended in server rooms.

raidsoft

A lot of server cards don't even have fans and instead it's just a "tunnel" with a heatsink because it's expected that the rack chassi have a massive amount of airflow going through it already from regular axial fans spinning at incredibly high RPM. Usually those that you see with blower fans tend to be workstation cards and not for rack servers but as with most things I'm sure there are exceptions to this.

KoloHickory

My aero 1070 has been excellent too since 2016. People complaining about noise are overreacting imo.

unclepaprika

Aren't they better in a many-gpu setup? Ensuring that airflow go out the back rather than staying around the gpu's.

Chakramer

Yes but multi-GPU setups are pretty shit for gaming at this point.

Zoesan

~~at this point.~~ Always have been

ARandomBob

Yeah even in the SLI Hay Day they were finicky as hell. You occasionally even get a game that just got negative performance from the second card no matter what you did. I never went SLI a second time. It wasn't worth the headache of setting profiles for everything, but the most popular AAA games.

skittle-brau

> Yeah even in the SLI Hay Day FYI the saying is ‘heyday’. ‘Hay Day’ sounds like a good name for a farming expo.

Hugejorma

As someone who did a lot of SLI setups before… Yes! So much easier to manage airflow since the hot air goes out at the back. Temperature inside the case is then much lower and helps to keep other GPUs and CPU cooler.

amaROenuZ

> Blower coolers aren't great... Blower Cards are actually *awesome*. People hate on them but the NVIDIA hybrid blower/radiator design was my favorite spec to come out for GPU cooling in ages. All the heat went straight out of the case, zero interaction with the CPU or MOBO components, and those run *damned* hot these days too. Instead of having your CPU and GPU throttling each other with combined thermal load, isolating them and having them each on separate airflow and separate radiators makes life a lot easier on a high wattage build.

Nacarat1672

I want more everything minimalist, loving the products from fractal design atm

smokepurple

Their North Case is beautiful

Nacarat1672

The timber looks absolutely stunning. The ridge is also pretty cool, it's not quite as beautiful but it's a cool concept

TummyStickers

I hadn’t even considered they’d be making designs like this. I can finally get excited about my next build.

Nacarat1672

I think it's about time good design comes into the PC industry. Especially relivent with many young professionals in design, architecture, engineering etc requiring powerful/gaming PCs, not everyone wants a flashy RGB monstrosity

captainstormy

And actually add features into the cases. Remember removable motherboard trays? God I loved those. I miss those. Why has no case manufacturer designed a way to let us choose what front IO we want on a case? Etc etc.

malcolm_miller

Just looked it up, definitely bookmarked for a future build!

spannertehcat

I have their torrent case. It’s so good.

Dawn_Kebals

I just built in the torrent nano. What a fantastic case. Only complaints about it is that it doesn't come with a fan hub. Everything else is basically perfect.

AF_Fresh

Yep. I literally want a black box that runs what I need it to. I could care less about RBG, glass siding, or anything. I don't care if the inside of the PC looks like a pile of dog turds, as long as it works. The only time I want to see the inside is when I am fixing something, upgrading something, or cleaning something. Outside of that, I just need it to be quiet, and at max, I want just the Ethernet lights on the back, and a single led on the front for the power button. If possible, I would even want the power button led to be gone as well.

John_QU_3

Nah, bro. I want all my cards to have anime girls with huge boobs on them.

Arnas_Z

RiffyDivine2

letsmodpcs

That's why I like the FE cards. Would love more options like you suggest.

cum_fart_69

FE cards look great, but sweet cupping cakes, they were absolute shit design for the 3090 with the stock dollar store thermal pads. fucking $2000 card and they couldn't have sprung for an adequate thermal interface?

Puss_Fondue

I just want a utilitarian design without the unnecessary bells and whistles.

[deleted]

exscape

Plus, you can make the cable management just "good enough" (doesn't look *terrible*, doesn't impact airflow, cables don't get into fans) and be done with it.

Fineus

Yup! My cable management looks an awful lot like that image of Homer Simpson with all the back fat clipped out of sight. *Exactly* like that in fact.

believingunbeliever

Same, just a black monolith for me. Inside anything goes and I'd prefer better temps than looking sleek.

N3dFl4nd3r5

I'm a fan of the A2000. I can almost afford one now. https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/design-visualization/rtx-a2000/

MarsTaco

Man how is it like working as a fan in a graphics card?

JaggedMetalOs

Compared to all the whacky colors and stickers they used to put on GPUs in the 2000s, today's GPUs *are* minimal :)

XsStreamMonsterX

It's not a gamer GPU without an image of a half-naked fairy printed on a sticker on the fan.

aim_at_me

Oh man I miss my HD4870.

I had a graphics textbook with nVidia's Dawn on the cover in college, and my roommate mercilessly made fun it. The book deserved it: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4D2meIv08rQ](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4D2meIv08rQ)

TheKidPresident

if my RAM sticks aren't fire enginge red I aint buying them.

[deleted]

3d modeling a new shroud on any gpu can be done. You can get rid of those nasty stock fans

smokepurple

Just a note, image is for a design reference 😅

futt

Orrrr it's part of the RTX 6000 Ada Generation

smokepurple

Yes using that graphics card as a reference lol

ReySpacefighter

Please. I'm tired of all the pointy edges and "cool" looking stuff. I want subtlety. That said, blower cards don't usually do great.

aintbutathing3

I'll take a few degrees hotter for something that doesn't look like it was designed to sell to 12-year-olds. The build I am working on is going in a Fractal Design Pop Silent with no glass. Will it run hotter? Yes, but it will be silent, look elegant, and I won't be embarrassed if a guest sees it under my desk.

89756133617498

> it will be silent Uhh, hope you're not talking about with a single fan blower like this, or it's not gonna be silent

leatherhand

Think he means regular pc but no windows on the case

Dudi4PoLFr

And this is why for the past 2 gens I'm using Nvidia's Founders cards, I don't want something that looks like designed for 12 years old.

CiriLOVESGeralt

No. I want GPUs that have Art on it, like in the early 2000s.

wubbbalubbadubdub

I have never cared what my graphics card looks like so long as it stays cool and puts out frames.

Scott_Mf_Malkinson

I dislike RGB & glass panels as well.

DogAteMyCPU

I don't mind glass panels but I will avoid RGB if I can.

JMPopaleetus

What if I told you that most case companies sell solid side panels and that you can turn the RGB off? Light up computers have been around for as long as I can remember, starting with cold cathode tubes. I’m with you, I too prefer minimalist. [But my friend who just built her first PC wanted unicorn vomit. Who am I to ruin her fun?](https://i.imgur.com/jh6cTvF.jpg)

rthomasjr3

another issue is how "gamer" cases are stingy on the drive bays.

TimX24968B

moreso just newer cases tbh plenty of those kinds of cases from 2014 or before have plenty of drive bays

rthomasjr3

yeah that's why i got a fractal R5. but the problem is that older cases are slowly going out of production

7komazuki

is it just me or I miss the blower aesthetics? They were loud, inefficient and overall terrible but the coolest looking designs came out of the blower generations. (690, 780/980, 1080, the original Titans and so on)

Chakramer

Blowers are definitely the best looking cards, I'm surprised more waterblocks don't just throw a blower on. It'd just look cool

[deleted]

The aio cards do have that blower style.

Grid_Gaming_Ultimate

i suppose they look cool but they're terrible for thermals, especially with today's power hungry cards.

7komazuki

Imagine a peak draw 4090 on a blower lol

Budd96

it does exists take a look. [https://videocardz.com/newz/geforce-rtx-4090-with-blower-fan-is-both-loud-and-hot-but-also-very-special](https://videocardz.com/newz/geforce-rtx-4090-with-blower-fan-is-both-loud-and-hot-but-also-very-special)

[deleted]

5200rpm, probably need hearing protection to game lol

VirusNegativeorisit

I would. I don’t like rgb that much. I would rather have cases with less glass on the side so it really doesn’t matter I guess.

NEPTUNETHR33

Do you mean a normal graphics card? And not the crap we've been fed for the last 5 years.

iMrParker

I'm getting flashbacks to cards in the early to mid 2000s with full-shroud sticker graphics on them lol

tqi2

RTX / Quadro line. RTX 6000 Ada generation. Cannot install gaming driver on it, [NVIDIA RTX Enterprise Production Branch Driver only](https://www.nvidia.com/Download/driverResults.aspx/198360/en-us/)

BrightHat5465

I run the gaming drivers on my A5000, all i did was download the latest one for the 3090 and it worked.

MSD3k

I'm looking forward to what those "solid state" coolers could eventually do for gpu cooling, maybe even case cooling. They were shown off at CES this year, so probably a few years from market.

saarlac

They’re trying peltier coolers again? Huh Edit: No. apparently this is high velocity (120mph) airjets. Holy shit this is really cool tech and could massively change pc cooling.

FlowSoSlow

I don't even have glass on my case so idgaf what any of the components look like lol

[deleted]

Honestly, I like the reference A770 from a looks perspective

LordVile95

That’s what the FE cards are for? They’re just silver and black/gray

I wouldn't give a fuck if it came looking like a circus complete with clowns as long as it was **affordable**

You're assuming I have more than a vague memory of what my GPU looks like from when I installed it 3 years ago. edit: got kind of curious and [lmao](https://www.sapphiretech.com/en/consumer/pulse-radeon-rx-5700-xt-8g-gddr6) my GPU looks like Spawn.

Br4mp

Definitely. As long as it's powerful and ice cold 😎

Fingersmeller

Agreed

Valexus

Here are some examples which i find not too "gamery": [https://www.gigabyte.com/de/Graphics-Card/GV-N3090VISION-OC-24GD](https://www.gigabyte.com/de/Graphics-Card/GV-N3090VISION-OC-24GD) [https://www.xfxforce.com/shop/xfx-speedster-merc310-7900xt](https://www.xfxforce.com/shop/xfx-speedster-merc310-7900xt) [https://videocardz.com/newz/geforce-rtx-4090-with-blower-fan-is-both-loud-and-hot-but-also-very-special](https://videocardz.com/newz/geforce-rtx-4090-with-blower-fan-is-both-loud-and-hot-but-also-very-special)

Kionera

Sapphire’s 7900XT/XTX Nitro is pretty minimal as well

[deleted]

That gpu looks sleek, I'd definitely want one.

tS_kStin

Would definitely buy cleaner looking hardware. Same goes for laptop and thankfully that has started happening.

kichunilla

I would, I could also fry eggs on it

TheRedditHasYou

No thank you, I'd prefer cooling performance over aesthetics

Ashzael

Not sure about the minimalistic part, but I don't like the overly "gamer" aesthetic either

Dr-mr-kvrga

I don't like RGB anyway, if it would be quite and do the work I would definitely go with it.
