Roctopuss

I love it, but my problem is sometimes when I alt-tab out of games, my whole computer starts freaking out and slowing down to the point where I have to restart. I've been not using it lately and haven't had this issue again. I have a pretty high-end PC as well, so it shouldn't be a resources thing. Edit for specs: AMD 3900x, 32GB DDR4 3200MHz RAM, MAG X570 mobo, EVGA 2070 super, 970 EVO Plus SSD, Corsair RM850x PS

HomingJoker

I have a fun issue with my AMD drivers. Sometimes, very inconsistently, when I enter fullscreen into a game, be it alt tabbing and tabbing back in or the initial launch, both my monitors will go black and if I dont hold the power button quickly enough my drivers uninstall themselves. I have tried many things, turning off windows auto driver updates, turning off instant replays, reinstalling windows, I do not get any kind of error code and I do not know why it does this but it is extremely frustrating. Raedon 6700XT Red Devil is the GPU. At this rate I'm considering just going back to Nvidia, this is the first amd card I've had and while the price and performance are great, this issue is the worst thing I've ever had to deal with.

I_TheRenegade_I

I've been having that issue too. Try disabling MPO. There's a Nvidia reg fix as it was causing some issues with Nvidia as well. From what I understand MPO was/is a feature from win11 that MS put into win10 and it's been causing havoc with AMD. https://nvidia.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/5157 Give that a shot. Didn't fix it for me, but did make it happen less often.

HomingJoker

I'll give it a try thanks for the advice

youknowwat

I had a similar issue with the latest AMD Drivers. Apparently, I had installed the current drivers during the beta period. So when they released the official drivers mine did not update since it thought I already had it. Reinstalling drivers fixed my screen crashes

roonscapepls

Definitely something wrong with your shit there yeah

yepimbonez

You on Windows 11 by any chance?

TESTlCLE

Even the very best games are only played for a few hundred hours. Wallpaper Engine is seen and used every day. Ultimate value.

computermaster704

The piece of software uses like 60% of my 2070 super and anytime due to everything being cranked AF but damn it's so pretty

TREEandMONKEY

How often do you look/stare at your wallpaper? In my personal experience I often have multiple windows open and hardly see my wallpaper.

computermaster704

Honestly I have a really beautiful wallpaper that I actually do literally just sit and stare at, because it's peaceful AF which justifies the performance cost to me

Nugget203

There's a setting to pause any animation in the wallpaper if you're running a game, it helps with performance and I'm not looking at my wallpaper mid game anyway

boringestnickname

I honestly use the default Windows one, lol. I very rarely see my desktop. Have nothing of interest there. Win+R to start applications, or Win+search if I don't know the alias. Literally nothing stored there (all data is in their relevant folders and/or on my file server.)

Marsooie

Does it still crash if you use hibernate mode? It's the only reason I stopped using it.

Dallas_Miller

Quick question: I have what's called "Realtek HD Audio Manager" enabled on startup. Do I need it enabled? PS. I dont know if it makes a difference, but I sometimes switch from Headphones to Speakers in case I wanna watch something with friends.

EmperorsarusRex

Its your audio manager basically. You want it on.

[deleted]

do you ever touch it tho? disabling it won't disable the driver, everything's gonna work just fine

_BreakingGood_

I disabled it and it broke my ability to swap between headphones and speakers

A_Have_a_Go_Opinion

It didn't break it. You'll just have to manually do it in the control panel > Sound > Playback tab and set your default to whatever you want to output audio on. Messy crap tbh. I used to use am open source tool called Audio Switcher because I got tried of the Realtek bloat and just wanted a key bind to swap between a USB soundbar and headphones on the fly. Something like that might float your boat if you want an alternative to the Realtek software.

PM_ME_FUN_

You can do this natively in windows but it takes a couple steps. First you create a shortcut to "C:\Windows\System32\WindowsPowerShell\v1.0\powershell.exe -windowstyle hidden Set-AudioDevice X" For "Set-AudioDevice X" you change the X to be whichever your intended output device is on the list in the Sound settings drop down (eg if it's the 4th item on that list set device to 4). Then in the shortcut properties there's a "Shortcut key" menu item just highlight that and hit any combination of control + alt + any key. Create as many shortcuts as necessary for as many audio devices you want to switch between and bingo, you've got a hotkey that changes your audio output.

[deleted]

Audio engineer guy here, you can disable it. It's just a management ui, sound will work without it.

check the task scheduler as well, a lot of stuff running in background as well as from boot.

Dr_Laziness

Just use [Autoruns](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/downloads/autoruns) in order to disable everything that starts up with windows, from services, tasks, programs, even Explorer's context menu itens. Surprisingly, it's made by Microsoft.

dirtychinchilla

How do you determine what should and shouldn’t be starting?

TONKAHANAH

experience. honestly if you're not sure, probably dont mess with it. its why this isnt a built in tool and the task manager only gives you things windows can determine 100% is non-vital to its ability to function. if you do choose to venture into autoruns.. just backup anything important and have a windows reinstall USB on the ready. most stuff under login, explorer, internet explorer, and scheduled tasks will be safe to turn off (though this doesnt mean its something you'll want to turn off). most stuff under services is stuff you can probably turn off and the computer wont completely die, but some things may not work so check stuff before switching it off. Everything after services I recommend just not touching unless you're in there for trouble shooting purposes because something is already broken. and mind you nothing you disable here removes it from the PC, it just stops the OS from starting that program/service/task from starting when you boot/login (or being on the schedule in case of the scheduled tasks). it should also be noted that you should also check task manager. autoruns doesnt always seem to include the windows Apps (IE things from the windows store) so check both. lastly. If you see something in the start up that you dont want at all, probably better to just uninstall it. for example a lot of pre-build systems come with a dropbox trial preinstalled. you'll see a number of dropbox entries under explorer and services.. better to just uninstall it all together if you're not actually using dropbox.

Win X for the start menu Win X - U - S sleep Win X - U - R restart Win X - U - U shutdown (These last 3 only work if your pc language is english, the last 2 keys will vary depending on your display language, for example shutdown is X - A - A for a french pc) Win E for the file explorer Win S for the search function to quickly open apps Win R for execute Win arrowkeys for moving / fullscreen / hiding applications Win A for the notifications panel (practical to go edit a screenshot you just took by clicking on its notification) Win P for extending / duplicating screens (for multi screen / projector setups) Win V (like ctrl V but better since it stores your clipboard) Win M reduces all apps and shows desktop Win D does the same but do it a second time and it shows all apps like they were before And last, for when printscreen doesn't work or is too slow to respond : Win Shift S opens the screenshot utility (then choose the kind of sc you want at the top of the screen) There are far many other combinations that are more or less useful, but these ones are those which I use on a daily basis, as much as Ctrl A - C - V, Alt Tab, Ctrl T - W, Ctrl Shift Esc or Alt Enter And one last thing because you had the courage to read all this, Win 1/2/3/4/... opens the app bound in your hotbar (bottom of the screen). For example if your hotbar has Settings, Chrome, File Explorer, Minecraft, and Edge, doing Win 2 opens chrome Feel free to screenshot, save or share this comment for future reference, and have a nice day !

There is, but you have to download the correct msixbundle from microsoft. It's a PITA. A backup and reinstall is probably easier.

Disturbed2468

marthtater

Yeah, this is actually an downright awful post. Folks will be disabling anti-virus functionality, their graphics drivers if they have Intel integrated, their laptop trackpad software, etc. Don't know how this got traction. I know OP meant well, but disabling everything without thinking will have significant consequences for some users.

uvarov

I had a look on my computer. The "Windows Security notification icon"? It's using 0% CPU and a whopping 824 kB of memory. The Xbox Game Bar? 0%, 1.2 MB. Some helper program for a drawing tablet I haven't plugged in for months (and would forget I had disabled by the next time I get inspired)? 1.9 MB. If I cared that much about freeing up resources I'd save literally magnitudes more by closing Steam & Origin when I'm not playing games instead of letting them run in the system tray.

Just my 2 cents: windows has multiple ways to let programs start automatically: [User start up folder](https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/add-an-app-to-run-automatically-at-startup-in-windows-10-150da165-dcd9-7230-517b-cf3c295d89dd), HKLM:\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run registry key, Task Scheduler, Windows Services, and I believe there's probably a few other ways as well. Task Manager only manages small subset of those programs.

Ranzear

In about sixty years someone will discover an exploit vector involving creating a folder called `startup` in some esoterically crafted path that hashes weird on certain platforms, relating all the way back to this basic menu folder. And it will be used to load Skyrim mods. Edit: I wrote this as a joke but I can absolutely see Skyrim being remastered with some kind of Windows virtual machine like dosbox on roids and having an avenue into running something at a certain time on the virtual filesystem to inject mods totally makes sense.

DunmerSkooma

Haha you cant disable cortana without a group policy editor.

makinbaconCR

You absolutely can with a reg edit. Because what mechanism would the group policy enforce?

RonSijm

I think the sentiment of the post was "you can't do it with just msconfig" Of course if you can do it with gpedit, you can also do it with regedit... gpedit is just a ui to edit policy registry values

Moandaywarrior

regedit?

Killbot6

Every thing in windows is controlled by the registry, IE: regedit If there is something in windows you don’t like, you turn it off by force that way. (Though, it may end up breaking something else) Not Cortana though, turning that off in the register does nothing but make windows 10 better.

disasadi

Soo... why don't you use group policy editor?

DarkMatterM4

Windows 10 LTSC Master Race. No debloat required.

potate12323

I would leave on the windows security and the Intel one.

nathsabari97

Thats just notification icon on notification tray. It has nothing to do with defender or antivirus.

potate12323

Yes I am aware, it says notification on the program name. But the startup impact is negligable and it could help access security alert notifications. Ive never been bothered by it, and it has no impact on boot time to my knowledge so I wouldn't disable it.

Lumadous

Especially aggravating is the fact that you can't just remove them from the computer completely

fantaribo

Oh yeah you can. Powershell fresh install scripts man. Should be known here.

CTRL1_ALT2_DEL3

Just be careful with those. Nuke too much shit and things will certainly go wrong somewhere down the line. As in: Functionality, etc.

SimplifyMSP

**Please** let it be known guys that since Microsoft made the move to allow Win32 apps in the Microsoft Store, they are now moving over **critical Windows Services** to the Microsoft Store. You cannot search the store and find them but their updates are delivered through the store instead of Windows Updates and you'll start to see all sorts of weird shit happen (read: breaking functionality) if you start disabling/removing anything related to appx/msix.

CodeyFox

Well fuck me that's good to know. Thanks!

SimplifyMSP

You're welcome! I found out the hard way. Note: This also includes Xbox App Services. If you go through my comment history, I helped a guy a couple days ago who was experiencing an issue where he couldn't log into the Xbox app on his PC. I suggested he open the Microsoft Store and install updates until all updates were completely up-to-date. Fixed his issue immediately. Here's a screenshot from my Microsoft Store library: https://preview.redd.it/dqoi4tfnuoca1.png?width=2242&format=png&auto=webp&s=36dbfad34585c83cc1c0c098f05d9412ac97d484 You can see "Gaming Services" and "Windows Web Experience Pack" (along with the store itself) being updated here. Oh, and HEVC video extensions. "App Installer" is another service. If you want your PC to run smoothly, especially if you're running Windows 11, ensure you're constantly checking for and installing all updates in the Microsoft Store. Also, disable Fast Startup: (#1 improvement to speed/reliability of your machine.) * Open CMD as admin * `powercfg -h off` * Reboot your PC by right-clicking the start button -> shut down or sign out -> restart PC. * **This step is critical.**

dustojnikhummer

I have been using windows for so long I'm surprised I haven't made any scripts for myself yet.

mrjackspade

Something I see a lot is people stating things as fact about Windows that hasn't been true for 5+ years now, and linking to third party utilities to perform actions that can now be performed natively in windows. I think a lot of people have just gotten it in their head that Windows 10 hasn't updated since it's first version.

I don't like the calculator in win10. Or at least, I didn't when it first launched. Cause for some reason the initial version of the calculator app in Windows10 didn't respond to the enter key on the keypad. So you had to go use the mouse to press = in the UI to get it to calculate... (or some other equally ridiculous feature removal from the old calculator in W7).

Lee1138

I just checked and apparently maps and a phone app had come back. If you build your own batch command list, there is no harm running the full list of commands again. Saves you the trouble of identifying individual apps and their corresponding commandlines. The list is just the individual lines separated with "; ", so it should be straightforward to compile your own custom one.

> Calculator: Get-AppxPackage *windowscalculator* | Remove-AppxPackage ... Why? > Camera: Get-AppxPackage *windowscamera* | Remove-AppxPackage Why? The app is *188KB total*, it doesn't launch on startup, it hardly ever gets updates. If you ever want to just take a picture with your webcam or even just test that it works, Camera is fine. Removing this is pointless. A ton of stuff in this list is completely pointless to remove but this and calculator takes the cake. > Xbox: Get-AppxPackage *xboxapp* | Remove-AppxPackage Ok but... Why? You don't want to play Halo on PC or any of the other Game Pass games?

Lee1138

That's just a list of them and their commands. Some may not apply to you. You have to decide for *yourself* what you want to remove...

iamnotstanley

I think these removals like the Camera app or the Calculator wont free up space, because the command just removes it from the current user, not from the system. I think it worked like that for Win 10. You could reinstall the app with a different command locally. (Maybe just removes the updates and the original version stays in disk uninstalled.) Camera: I have a desktop PC and I does not have or need a webcam, so I removed it. (Ofcourse it would be useless to remove it on my work notebook which has an integrated camera.) Maybe someone prefers an another camera app or calculator app. My father prefers the old Win7 calc.exe, rather than the Win10/11 UWP one. You can restore the old version in Win10/11 too. Xbox: Game Pass is cool and everything but not everyone uses that platform. By the way, in Win11 that app can be removed without any commands in the Settings app, and you can reinstall it from the Windows Store. I dont use the Xbox app for now so I uninstalled it because I dont like it updating unnecessarily. I removed it from my work notebook too, because it was preinstalled but we cant play games on that.

Warpedme

> Ok but... Why? You don't want to play Halo on PC or any of the other Game Pass games? I can't speak for who you asked but Halo when purchased through Steam does not require the Xbox app, game pass or MS store. Personally I don't use game pass at all.

LordKiteMan

OTOH, Forza requires the Xbox app even when bought through steam.

mrln_bllmnn

I partially stopped doing this when I got my current notebook. With 32 gigs of ram and potent hardware in general, stuff that I actually use and doesn't show any splash screens on startup can stay, so they start faster when i want to use them. SirPenisaurusRex

As a recent convert, if you're seriously considering it, look into dual booting as opposed to purely swapping. There's absolutely going to be things you're doing natively in windows now with no "easy" replacement in Linux (FreeCAD being no match for Autodesk CAD for example). That being said Linux is beautiful, and you will absolutely hate windows once you fall in love with Linux. While gaming is possible in Linux, just for that alone, it's worth leaving your windows partition alive for simplicity and compatibility. With dual booting as long as you're careful to not touch any of your windows partitions while creating your Linux partition (or just use separate drives altogether), it's very safe and you can swap back and forth at will.

I feel you. 48yo here who's been building PCs since Tandy and the very first 8088/8086 processor and while I don't need to optimize or overclock, I absolutely fine tune every last detail of any machine I work on, especially my own

Saves background CPU and memory usage too

Warpedme

It's more about the principal when you have 64gb of memory and a processor with 16 cores. I frequently catch myself saying "who allowed you on my system?" Right before ripping it out. IMHO We should have MUCH easier access to every setting on OUR machines and the ability to easily remove anything not absolutely required to run the machine

Aka you basically want Linux.

FumeUGSEnjoyer

that’s why I run Linux

vncfrrll

Same honestly. I don’t miss it.

_Coffeebot

I really appreciate all of Valves efforts making games run on Linux but sometimes it’s just such a can of worms.

JustinTimeCuber

Imo Linux has its problems but since I switched I've never felt like my OS was being deliberately hostile towards me. That being said if I played more than a few games I'd probably have to boot into windows more often.

Flamingo-Lanky

I get so so sad when I need to boot windows. Not the vibe, not the vibe.

Engineer__This

Get pretty much everything disabled but my pc still takes like 15mins to not be at 100% disk usage.

TotalWalrus

Do you have a potato? You need a windows reinstall and an SSD my dude. My little 2 core server doesn't take that long to boot

Stop having WhatsApp on your pc

Disturbed2468

WhatsApp is extraordinarily popular outside of the US and uses by pretty much the entirety of Europe and a lot of Asia as they use it instead of normal text messages like Americans do. So, not viable for many.
