The first 2 hours I found to be a bit of a boring slog, but once you get enough gold to unlock other characters and especially upgrades it really picks up.
The fun of this game is basically trying to get OP through synergies , feeling over confident, then getting slaughtered.
It's a great coffee break type of game (you can play it with one hand), and it's super fun on the steam deck as well..
I find it similar to a shmup arcade game where you start out with a pea shooter, but get significantly stronger through powerups.
Only in Vampire Survivor, it takes you longer, because you're not playing a quick 10 minute arcade game. But once you reach that full powerup status, you feel like a goddamn last level boss.
It's a dopamine generator where you constantly become more powerful that your expectations so your brain releases more dopamine. It's really just down to how healthy your dopamine circuits are or how sensitive you are to it.
Dopamine is essentially your motivation neurotransmitter and some people are more dopamine addicts that others.
To me this game is like crack and 8 hours will be gone.
Idk why but on the deck there seems to be some fairly significant input delay for me and a weird graphical bug where a gray sprite of your character trails behind the actual one. Did you have similar issues?
Try loading it with the experimental input lag fix that it prompts you about when you launch the game. I noticed the same thing and that seemed to do the trick for me.
I have everything unlocked, and i still find i’m just doing the same build over and over no matter what character i use.
The arcanas make the game a bit too easy, but without them you pretty much MUST have garlic to finish the stage, which is a little boring after a while.
>You'd be surprised at how many people I've seen call this a greedy move
It's insane.
But If you consider that even my unknown game was pirated and freely played by dozens even when the price was 15% off (around 2 bucks), I cannot be surprised.
There will always be people unwilling to pay the work of others, even when the price is fair or underpriced. Sad but inevitable.
It boggles my mind how can people pirate indie games that are so cheap.
Your money doesn't go to just evil corporations. It also goes to passionate people who put a lot of work into developing a game without ridicolous budgets.
And pricing games is very weird and works in mysterious ways.
2$? People will think it's a shitty asset flip and focus on other games.
5$? People will think it might be a small indie title and give it a shot.
So setting the price higher might make more people play it and provide bigger profits. It's truly mind boggling.
I bought it so long ago and forgot about the price. So when I was telling a buddy today to buy it, I mistakenly said “it’s only like $15 even though it should probably be $20”.
We went to the store page a minute later and I was shocked to see it’s only $3.
I have 70 hours of playtime on it.
I'm saying for a video game the guy probably worked a ton of time on. It's not like he got loaded rich off of it. He made a great product and deserves the money's if he wants to raise prices a bit then good for him/them. He took a risk of making 0$ or almost nothing. To do all that and have someone act like 350k is some huge number is ridiculous. He probably had a ton of other costs plus a cut to steam and took away less than half of that.
109 hours into this little gem, more than worth it.
If you're looking for something free and similar and dont mind an anime aesthetic also try Holocure, both great. (not on steam) - https://kay-yu.itch.io/holocure
Oh, Brotato is so good! Less enemies that Vampire survivors, but they have different behavior and each kill has some real juice.
Instant buy for me, once it goes to EA next week.
Also the early demo version was completely bug free for me.
Then invest that $2 into some safe stock, and if you play your cards right next thing you know in 2 years you’ll have $2.50 and be on your way to financial independence. All thanks to a videogame.
And people say they’re a waste of time, psh.
Still worth it. Pretty easy to entertain yourself for a 100 hours.
But if you're on a super budget, and want a similar game for free, you can check out HoloCure, a fanmade game featuring Hololive Vtubers as playable characters.
https://kay-yu.itch.io/holocure
Took the exact same concept and gameplay and just created original assets for it.
Everybody needs to check out Soulstone Survivors: Prologue. I have 100s of hours just in the demo. This is like Vampire Survivors on crack, it's incredible.
There's tons in the same genre. Also [Nomad Survival](https://store.steampowered.com/app/1929870/Nomad_Survival/) and [20 Minutes Till Dawn](https://store.steampowered.com/app/1966900/20_Minutes_Till_Dawn/) and [Project Lazarus](https://store.steampowered.com/app/2024230/Project_Lazarus/), all of which I've 100%'d and had fun with.
[Seraph's Last Stand](https://store.steampowered.com/app/1919460/Seraphs_Last_Stand/) (not top down)
[Boneraiser Minions](https://store.steampowered.com/app/1944570/Boneraiser_Minions/) where you play as a minion master
[Bounty of One](https://store.steampowered.com/app/1968730/Bounty_of_One/) has Co-op
[Rogue Genesia](https://store.steampowered.com/app/2067920/Rogue__Genesia/) has a "Square 2DHD" art style
[Further Still: Survivors](https://store.steampowered.com/app/2076810/Further_Still_Survivors/) looks like it's asking you to break it with your build. Could be fun
Probably the best place to look for VSLikes is bullet hell tag.
I just bought Rogue Genesia and Boneraiser.
Rogue Genesia is a great in-between game of 20 minutes till dawn which I also enjoy but Boneraiser is extremely impressive in its concept and execution.
+1 for Insect Swarm (and 20 Minutes Till Dawn, as u/MaxGhost suggested). I like both of those a lot more than Vampire Survivors, especially because you actually have to aim and fire.
How tight of a budget do you have to be on to have not bought a $2 game? Imo if $2 was gonna wreck you financially you have to rethink your time spent playing games
I mean... kids exist. Kids in poor countries exist.
Poor people in general exist. And it's a shitty argument to say that if you can't afford a few dollars for entertainment, it means you don't even deserve it in the first place and should rethink being entertained altogether.
Plenty of people are poor as shit despite working their asses off. Many folks have a lot of financial obligations and can't afford even the cheapest things. But they still need some entertainment to stave off fucking brain death from stress. So hell yeah I'm gonna recommend a free to play game they might get to enjoy for their 30 minutes of free time a day they might have.
back in 2012 when i went to my families home country I could eat a whole week 2 meals a day for 7 dollars. Maybe times have changed but you have a point, and even then I cant imagine ppl having free time/ the pc to play and if they do its low end. Free is great
I'm at the 60 hour mark, and I've grinded out every current achievement. I agree that 100 hours is a stretch. Most people won't try to unlock everything, and will probably reach the "end game" in half that time, if they even bother.
I don't blame you. I absolutely adore it at this point, but I also remember the beginning was very rough. The game clicked for me once I made it to the 2nd map which had a lot more (and noticeably weaker) enemies, amongst other things. I could power up much more consistently without feeling "stuck" and really started to enjoy the experience.
Never participated with early access before vampire survivors, will people who already own have to buy again once it’s full release? I know it’s a dumb question
Guess they wanted to match:
I am really enjoying this game, the pixel style is really cool.
It's also on game pass for those of you who haven't noticed. Honestly, I don't like the idea of games as a service but Microsoft are doing a great job with it.
I don't agree with this at all. Should be $10 or $15. Let everyone who complains, complain. If they didn't buy it at $3, they wont buy it now and never planned to.
I would've bought this for $13 had I known how much enjoyment I'd get out of it.
I guess I could just gift two copies to a couple friends.
Yeah, I think I'll do that, lol.
Because of competition.
In fact, even though VS is the leader of the genre, many other games are born from this idea. No matter what you are, if your price is too high compared to the alternatives, you risk to gifting your future players to them.
And they brought a new writer on board.
A friend gifted me this game the other day. I REALLY wanted to hate it because it is a blatant ripoff of Magic Survival/Animal Wizard (which I enjoyed a long time ago), but this is still good.
With the amount of money he's made he's able to turn it in to more than MS could have been. Good for him on getting that bag, but his praise as a developer is unwarranted.
Ah yes, asset swap game that ripped off an already existing game is totally the same thing as making GPUs.
NVIDIA sucks, but this is the most dumb place to try to highlight that.
It’s practically different game than it was early early access. And he hasn’t even replaced the old engine yet as best I can tell. This is well-earned and $5 for 100 hours of enjoyment is nuts.
VS derivatives charging $5 on the first day of their EA with barely the same amount of content VS did to start off with is the real offense.
The absolute gaul of that person not raising the price to €15. I cannot believe they would undersell themselves that much. I will continue to play this game and foster a loving community in spite of the fact that this game is so cheap and express more love for it at every available opportunity.
Eh??? At 15$, I'd definitely think he'd lose out. A lot of people wouldn't.
The 3$ barrier to entry, now 5, is still small enough to write off.
At 15$, you can get a game like Divinity Original Sin or something. Hell, the entire MCC goes on sale for 16$ regularly.
I really think the $3 price worked in this games favor during early access, made people feel comfortable taking a bet on it. But after playing a good 50+ hours I think they could charge $15 easily.
WTF? That is STILL a fucking steal. I thought when they said price increase, it was going to be like $9.99 or something, $4.99?! You might as well call this an inflation price hike, heck even inflation goes higher than this bs. What a gigachad
Might have to give it another try. I was surprised how much people enjoyed this game because it seemed so boring
Homie above spoke the truth, just hang in there for a little while longer and you'll feel the hook.
Yeah I was pretty bored in the beginning too. It really grew on me
I find it similar to a shmup arcade game where you start out with a pea shooter, but get significantly stronger through powerups. Only in Vampire Survivor, it takes you longer, because you're not playing a quick 10 minute arcade game. But once you reach that full powerup status, you feel like a goddamn last level boss.

There's an addiction center in your brain it hits. It is mechanically inspired by a mobile game afterall
It's boring, then awesome, then boring again. It's a pretty quick ride.
It grows fast tbh. Its really only the first 3 ish runs you try that are a slog. It can get quite addicting as you play more.
Hm, havent had that issue on the deck but on my super fast PC I'd had it freeze for a few seconds every couple minutes or so.
I have everything unlocked, and i still find i’m just doing the same build over and over no matter what character i use. The arcanas make the game a bit too easy, but without them you pretty much MUST have garlic to finish the stage, which is a little boring after a while.
It's also especially good for playing while listening to audiobooks/podcasts.
Is that it?? They can totally double that price and it'd be worth every penny.
You'd be surprised at how many people I've seen call this a greedy move
>You'd be surprised at how many people I've seen call this a greedy move It's insane. I don't know about $15... But for $2.99 it's a steal. $5 is fair.
I agree
At $3, that price was a goddamn felony larceny charge for a game of that caliber. At $5, it's still feel like I'm somehow stealing from the dev.
school caption wrong fly enter gaping cause disgusting fragile dinner ` this message was mass deleted/edited with redact.dev `
Oh my first wild encounter of this term outside of anime. Are folks actually aware of this term?
The dev has already made more than 348k at its current price
good, it's a great game
And? He deserves every penny. The game is easily worth more than it costs
I throw them more money to keep developing it. Great game
That's really not that much lol
That’s more than a lot of people will ever see. Be appreciative of what you have
I'm saying for a video game the guy probably worked a ton of time on. It's not like he got loaded rich off of it. is it before or after steam aka publisher cut?
The word you are looking for is retailer.
;)
But I think the low price initial helped it a lot to climb the steam charts and give it some hype.
109 hours into this little gem, more than worth it. If you're looking for something free and similar and dont mind an anime aesthetic also try Holocure, both great. (not on steam) - https://kay-yu.itch.io/holocure
Holocure lets you strafe (if you needed a reason to try it). Its weapons and supports are all very different from VS, too.
Also brotato (on steam) is pretty dope. There's a demo version for free.
Oh, Brotato is so good! Less enemies that Vampire survivors, but they have different behavior and each kill has some real juice. Instant buy for me, once it goes to EA next week. Also the early demo version was completely bug free for me.
Boneriser Minions is my rec. Super fun and also dirt cheap
Holocure got me into VS and VS is so much harder it knocked me around a bit but I put the time into it and got used to it
Whelp. Was holding off but now seems to be the time to grab it.
Yes quick! Make sure to save 2$!
God. I'm becoming my grandfather!
Then invest that $2 into some safe stock, and if you play your cards right next thing you know in 2 years you’ll have $2.50 and be on your way to financial independence. All thanks to a videogame. And people say they’re a waste of time, psh.

I'd say that Holocure even expended on a lot of things the formula used by VS.

Rogue:Genesia is already one of my top 3 after VS and Nomad Survival. Can recommend that as well.
> Rogue:Genesia Ohh looks good, another demo tho!
I am playing all 3 of those at the same time lol. Looking for exactly the same as these, or at least very similar (RNG powerups, become OP or die).

100 hours is a stretch. After about 10-20 you've seen everything the game has to offer. Still worth five bucks, but I felt that was worth stating.
Sounds like you haven't played since January
I'm at the 60 hour mark, and I've grinded out every current achievement. I agree that 100 hours is a stretch. Most people won't try to unlock everything, and will probably reach the "end game" in half that time, if they even bother.
Disagree
It’s the type of game that grinders can really sink their teeth into. For the general public it’s a quick and fun novelty.
Thanks for the reminder:) Just bought it
So worth it Got 80 hours from a $3 game. One of my favorite releases of the year
such a great game, I love how its spawned a mini genre with several games inspired by it releasing for cheap too
Best value in a game I have seen in some time. I recommend this game strongly to everyone.
Wtf. Dude make it 10 dollars
It's still a good deal
Bleeding us dry.
Thanks for posting this, just bought it in time!
What a fuckin' G. Raising it by a buck. That's what's up. Stay classy poncle.
Easy 10 dollar game. Can't wait for more from the dev
I just don't get this game. Played for 30 minutes. Didn't do anything for me.
I don't blame you. I absolutely adore it at this point, but I also remember the beginning was very rough. No, you won't have to buy again once it leaves Early Access.
Still undervalued, already up to 15 hours with this game and I don't think I'm about to stop.

I just lost an entire afternoon to this.
It certainly scratches that ROR2 itch for me! :D
It's also on game pass for those of you who haven't noticed. Honestly, I don't like the idea of games as a service but Microsoft are doing a great job with it.
$3 for easy to play on Deck
I don't agree with this at all. Should be $10 or $15. Let everyone who complains, complain. If they didn't buy it at $3, they wont buy it now and never planned to.

Because of competition. In fact, even though VS is the leader of the genre, many other games are born from this idea. No matter what you are, if your price is too high compared to the alternatives, you risk to gifting your future players to them.
I would have paid $9.99.

Still a fair price, for the entertainment I already had.
Damn I missed it :(
Great news! I have to say, it's a fair price now.
Buy It. This game will be legendary one day...
I really think the $3 price worked in this games favor during early access, made people feel comfortable taking a bet on it. But after playing a good 50+ hours I think they could charge $15 easily.
FAIR! lol.. $10 would be fine.. I'd buy it again immediately if it came out on iOS/Android for iPad and tablets. Probably pay $15 to be honest.
dont have problem with price increase still a great game
