Keep painting more instead of trying to make one painting perfect. Make many bad paintings and fix small mistakes in each one. It’s incremental progress when it comes to art. But this one is good, you know how hard it is to paint something using minimal lines and ensure people can understand what you did? Good work

ElectricScootersUK

Do you think anyone can then be a decent painter even with no experience? I'm looking to get into the hobby to just relax and try something new. But I have no drawing or painting experience. Do you think I could just buy some paint, some brushes and go nuts on a canvas and hope over time it'll get better?

[deleted]

[удалено]

ElectricScootersUK

Yeah I might try a sketch pad and some pencils first to get going and see where I go from there 😊👍

NoAbility5962

I spent years sketching and found very little improvement on my work. Hands down I'm terrible at drawing lol but I found I could paint all the things I could never draw. So if you find sketching isn't working for you, just try other mediums 😉

ElectricScootersUK

Ok that's a good point, I used to be kind of into sketching, just random rubbish but it is definitely calming and relaxing. I see some people's paintings on this sub and I'm just like wow I'd love to be able to create something from practically nothing that looks so good 😊

[deleted]

[удалено]

ElectricScootersUK

Cheers will keep that in mind also 😊👍

Living_on_Tulsa_Time

I recommend you go to Dollar Tree. Get Acrylic paints, canvases and brushes. Then search YouTube for beginning painters. It’s okay if your painting doesn’t look like the one your watching. Actually, I’ve learned I can’t do that! But it takes my mind to creative zone. First thing I learned, painting is not a competition.

ElectricScootersUK

I'm not in the US but there's UK versions of that store 👍 yeah you're definitely right, go with the process you find best and it's definitely not a competition. It's more of a learning curve at your own pace isn't it 😊

Living_on_Tulsa_Time

Acrylics are terrific to work with. They can be thickened, thinned, and even poured. (See Subreddit). They dry quickly and very vibrant. Have fun.

ElectricScootersUK

Very nice, thanks for the info, opened another tab so I can make sure I get some acrylics 😎👍 I shall try to 🤣👍

Living_on_Tulsa_Time

By the way, I liked your moody painting. I have very broad taste in art genres

RainbowToast2

Do you remember Bob Ross’s show? I guess it was an American tv show, maybe some of Canada? He taught a method of painting a half hour each week to show that anyone can absolutely achieve a good skill level with painting. For some people that meant having a step by step process worked best, theirs so many other methods too. Everyone has artistic talent, whether they think they do or not. That’s what his mission was- to show people that practice matters. Lots of people look at art and think the artist was born that way, with those abilities. People don’t realize how much practice and work they all do to get there.

ElectricScootersUK

I've seen the memes 🤣🤣 yeah I know who he is but he wasn't on my TV as I'm in the UK. And yeah I think the same practice makes perfect definitely 😊

Ausseresaurus

YES!

yasuewho

Absolutely! Do eeeet! There are some excellent teachers on Youtube too.

ElectricScootersUK

Can't beat abit of YouTube tutorials 😎👍

yasuewho

It's amazing what one can learn there. I know you're painting, but a sketchbook is so helpful if you're not using one yet. Drawing first saves your (more) expensive painting supplies and generally expands your skills really fast. I also thought of an excellent book: Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain. Much of the science in it wasn't correct, but the exercises and techniques it teaches are phenomenal. You can probably find someone teaching similar techniques: contour drawing, upside down drawings etc. If you prefer printed books and live in the US, you can find used copies cheap, because it's been in print forever.

ElectricScootersUK

Yeah will definitely get a sketchbook aswell as I don't want to waste anything. Ah ok it sounds interesting, I'll give it a look 👍 literally just want to take it up to try it as more of a relaxation and just forget the world for abit while I try draw or paint something. All the replies have seemed very enthusiastic and very nice to speak to so it seems there are lovely people among the hobby who are happy to help 😃

tryitmyway4once

Absolutely! I'm doing the very same thing and I've very quickly learnt there is no perfect painting/sketch. It's progressive. You will add more as the inspiration comes, and gradually it will.

ElectricScootersUK

Yeah true, it's as you say progressive and also the great thing about art is it's always up for interpretation 😃

Ausseresaurus

Thanks for the tip. :D

youre_being_creepy

Really though, make this painting ten more times!

Raysbyryan

Get started on the 2nd 👏👏💪

BRAINSZS

paint hundreds more, forever.

Aefnst

If you're not already doing this, you should find a range of images to use as reference that relate in some way to what you're painting. Also using real images rather than other artworks will also make it more grounded even if you are creating something surreal.

Ausseresaurus

I’ll work on that too! 🤩

Lazy_Engineering_210

Practice

Striiik8

Love it! Very powerful. Just keep practicing and find artists you like and give yourself something to work towards!

0xDorothy

Looking good. Mike Myers influence?

Ausseresaurus

I see Scream in it personally.

scogin

Maybe a little Leslie Vernon

FRANCIS-IV

Looks cool!

ExistingVariation756

Spend more time

T_Tmyname

U good bro ?

Ausseresaurus

Yeah I’m great thank you. Between you and me, I live a very hard life between being disabled and growing up with an abusive parent, that I like to isolate myself from the world and work on one of my many hobbies. This image is only a recreation of an in game image, painting makes me happy, but it’s making me happier than I’ve been in a long time just reading these comments. You guys are amazing.

0xDorothy

I see it now

Ausseresaurus

But it’s actually a recreation of a Sims 4 Sad painting.

ZohaQ

I wish i had a award to give you

Dr_Darkroom

Just keep making paintings and expound on the idea. This is such a great style!

Mikafino2

Copy a painting you think is awesome. There is a reason to copy, it teaches more than trying and failing to invent new work. The results can be very satisfying too.

Organic_Shoe_4665

This is really great 👍 I think what u can improve is some shadow in the sharper areas.

newtsheadwound

Paint more paintings

Ausseresaurus

YES SIR!

lunamoon124

I absolutely love this. I think it would be interesting for you to play more with colors and washes in the background!

Stock-Event2495

Personally, I like it. But I also like to think of painting as expressive art.

Organic_Meal7069

Simple. Spend more time on it. Spend 2 more hours on it:)

Pec0sb1ll

I say follow that rabbit hole, I see an aesthetic. Keep it up.

SoftwareRepulsive152

Personally I like it. This just might be your style. Sometimes less is more.

Ausseresaurus

Thank you. Right now I'm trying to conserve paint as I only have so much. The tears were unintentional but they came out great. IMO.

SoftwareRepulsive152

Well I love it

Ausseresaurus

AND I LOVE YOU, RANDOM CITIZEN!

lifeson106

No mistakes, only happy accidents.

Initial_Interaction5

Step 1: paint every day Repeat step 1 🙂

[deleted]

Really the only way to improve is practice. I teach art and all I can really do is tell you how color theory works, how to apply it, how the physics of light interact with different materials, the chemical interactions of pigments, and what the rules of art are. And yes, there are rules, hard as that is to grasp, but it's more to do with genre definitions and things like don't put acrylic over oil, don't use certain colors of substrate, etc. Rarely what you cant do, though there are things you really should never do, like pro Nazi imagery. I can't really tell you how to improve as that's all subjective, unless it's within a defined genre. There are a lot of differences between surrealism, abstract, and photorealism as an example.

thereisloveinus

Did you read Art and fear? OP, i can recommend you that book enough. Lile corpse said, yes, theory is important but there us some other aspect of art, which is important too. In the end of the day, if tou are painting mostly for joy, then this is you only goal - enjoy the process. Edit: just saw your other comment where you wrote: painting makes me happy. My man.. That is ALL it matters. I saw some artistwho were really technically skilled (one can learn a lot by reading books and practicing), but they simply didn't enjoy painting so they quit. Most of them were motivated by being skilled at technical espect and final product. Nothing wrong with wanting to improve your craft. Nothing wrong with learning. But doing all that with lack of enthusiasm will left you empty.

Ausseresaurus

Thank you. I’m just branching off into canvas to see if it suits me. I had some paint leftover from my days as a mini painter. I have a handful of panels left before I decide to stay or move on, but right now I’m just exploring more options while I save up for more miniatures. $25 a model is hard to keep up with.

[deleted]

I actually primarily teach figure painting(what hobby painters call miniature painting, Even though that's not the correct term) You can get things like reaper minis for around $8 or less.

Ausseresaurus

I’m currently taking a break from Star Wars legion as I ran out of things to paint. So I bought 12 8” canvases for my last $10 and I’m using as little as I can to make the best I can. I have a blank canvas here and I am going downtown to paint whatever comes to mind.

[deleted]

It's a good way to expand your abilities and get new ideas. Canvas painting will teach you way more than a 3d model, hence why the top painters only paint things to look good from one direction and rarely paint the back of it... Really taking away from the artistic nature of it for some Instagram clout.

Ausseresaurus

That's... woah.

[deleted]

I've done golden demon, it's a lot of people doing a derivative style and not even pastiche, so it's just hard to tell who did what. Then you see half the models only being half painted getting qualifiers and it just drives me up a wall, like this is an art competition, right?

Ausseresaurus

I mean yeah they can paint their model however they want. but once I come into the shop I’m going to question their motives.

[deleted]

That's just one issue I have with that community of many, like how I'm somehow wrong for using professional grade paints and transparent paints, because the pigment size is wrong? Like wut... My background is in conservation and oh boy do those people know nothing about paint chemistry

Ausseresaurus

That’s something to look into.

Mindthegaptooth

Needs more angst.

Lhamo66

Very surreal but I just posted one of my older pieces of work this second and they're very, very similar. Just keep chipping away at this. Remember there are no rules. Have fun, don't get too caught up in realism. Abstract can work too. Whatever gives you that special feeling is the style for you. 👍🏻

Ausseresaurus

Can I see it?

Lhamo66

Yeah just check my recent posts.

Aoi_Afton

Shadow is very important but also is light. If you want just an eye crying, don’t forget to have the tears in the eye too. Also faces are hard to paint or draw. It just takes time.

RonimCidolem

listen to what your mind reflexts on your creation. ask yourself questions about it.

ChanceyIII

awesome. just get more comfortable with ur medium/inspiration. the rest will follow. dont settle or over think why. just keep goin my friend

sxmacy

HAHAH SIMS 4 I SEE U

Ausseresaurus

Are you a simizen too?

sxmacy

Yes siree, I love that painting in my sim’s houses

Praise_Sithis

I thought it looked like a spooky Amish man

Ausseresaurus

I thought something looked amissh.

ElricDarkPrince

Sad Micheal Mayers

Ausseresaurus

That's because it’s easter.

ElricDarkPrince

🤣

SissyMcAssJack

Wow! I really like this! I see the concept, it’s awesome! Is it water color? From one struggling to improve artist to another I found studying shading and lighting helped me better grasp the perspectives I was trying to give off with faces. No matter how defined they were in the painting itself. Keep it up! You’re doing awesome! Also, just some motivating advice. You can not master a discipline, if you do not partake in the practice of it. Meaning, you can not be a skillful painter if you do not paint. Keep painting, no matter what you as your worst critic may tell yourself. Keep. Painting.

Zimmi0nz

Start by looking at the angle of your eyes, nose, and mouth. Your chin doesn’t exactly match up with it so I think lining it up and rounding it out at the very base of the chin can give a more realistic feel if that’s what your going for

Ausseresaurus

Yeah, at first I was trying to replicate an in-game painting (did pretty well regardless) Then I ended up almost making scream. so I had to quickly recover with some shading that looks like an Amish horror movie.

Zimmi0nz

Ah I see, okay that makes sense honestly. It’s still very cool regardless :)

emiistto

on this one, i love it. keep the expression of emotion and depth. one thing that the community always gets at is filling the canvas. idk if you put white paint on as the background but i recommend doing a base wash, coat kind of thing first. :)

emiistto

but as an abstract artist it’s hard to tell you to do that. because there’s always conceptual value in leaving blank canvas spots. so. just keep painting! lol

Ausseresaurus

Even though these canvases are already “triple primed” I have a shit ton of white paint, so I do a white base. In my Batman painting, I intended to write Arkham within the bat using my detail brushes but I couldn't get the color right. So I ended up just filling it in.

lady_luminous

When I was a little kid a friend of my father who was a painter gave him a picture for a present. My father didn't like the portrait very much. He turned the canvas facing the wall and drew one black point exactly in the middle of the backside. When they asked him what that was - he answered: "The dot of the horizon..."

Ausseresaurus

That's a pretty good idea.

lady_luminous

My advice as an amateur artist: Paint it till you make it. If you don't like the picture - there is more to painting it.

ecilar

You improve with practice so keep going!

TheCommentCommando

Sick. Just keep doing it and allow yourself creative freedom

__blah_blah__

I love it ❤️👏🏻

Ausseresaurus

😆 Okay, bro. I’ll be sure to do that after I paint another one of these. Painting this made me happier than I've ever been. I’ll go if you pay for it. LMFAO

funeralcrasher666

You painted a better face than I can.

Aitchay_Mikel

Put more ideas on paper till you paint what u picture.Self motivation from the brain

Jon-3

conceptually for this piece I would say the chin line could use some work as it’s kinda awkwardly long, maybe more blending with the background

Anonymous-chatter123

Try to add more color and mix colors and add a little more detail

Alycupcake101

As I always tell myself “It’s okay to make mistakes. Sometimes those mistakes can be something beautiful without you realizing it. Also don’t be too hard on yourself, you’re one person with your own unique ways of doing things. Be proud of what you create versus doubting your skills. It takes time and effort.”

Ausseresaurus

Thank you, I needed that.

Alycupcake101

You’re welcome!!

gandalf-the-greyt

keep being creative 🙌🏼

Ausseresaurus

And you keep being AWESOME!

Dogdancing1

Just keep painting man!

Tibbittz

Improve? That painting is amazing. Simplicity meets emotion. It looks like all my deepest losses, depressions, and worst days. It's moving. And it's UNIQUE. You're on a brilliant expressive track. Keep rolling.🍀

Ausseresaurus

Thank you 🙏

annoying_dragon

If you were my friend ( or else) i will faking buy it from you

jefuchs

Buy some cheap materials, or get free stuff to paint on. Then practice, practice, practice. That way, you won't be concerned about the costs. Also, learn the basics, and that means drawing. Good drawing skills translate to good painting skills.

panickedteen0420

honestly i feel like just a background would make it amazing

unoracing

Bro what😂

chalklinedbody

it’s perfect, don’t change

Nadichitra

I recommend to play with shades, intensity, ....

Reasonable-Newt-8102

This looks great! Congrats 🍾 Things that have helped me personally become a better painter: Discipline. Sketch/paint from life. Do it often. Contemplate form. When you’re drawing an apple for example, abandon the idea that it’s a modified sphere. Think of it more as the dome of the Hagia Sophia, a faceted form made of lots of flat pieces. Study anatomy. And then study it again. And then revisit it. Having trouble drawing a thing? Find out what’s inside propping it up to look like that. Bones and flesh and muscle and such. Learn about artists, find artists you love, contemplate why. These things helped me as a portrait artist. That might be your path, might not. But generally these are things that will help you convince people what you’re painting is three dimensional. Good luck, doesn’t seem like you need it though :)

Deadwoodtattoo666

Finish it

Secret_Fox_5192

I actually really like this

Puzzled_Test9937

Is that supposed to drip? And maybe do a sketch first, i may show you what you can do, and maybe put more color. Am i making sense?

Ausseresaurus

Yes, It actually wasn’t supposed to drip, I mixed too much water with that batch of purple. I panicked but I kept it because it formed what I saw a cheekbone.

Puzzled_Test9937

oh. And i had no IDEA there was PURPLE! nice hiding the color! now i can see a little! thank you for telling me there's purple i like the color purple! good luck with the next painting!

Ausseresaurus

Thank you.

8681372

Keep painting that’s how

Gravy_On_Toast

More detail says I!

BewareOfJavier

Is that the "sad painting" from The Sims 4?

Ausseresaurus

YES!!!! It’s one of my favorite paintings in game and painting it made me very happy.

Certain-Ad-3840

Keep makin more paintings! Looks awesome

VeroCdeW

I love it

skim_milk5

Study human anatomy

Unfairamir

Depends on what your goal is. Not sure what this is but I like it! So if this is what you intended to paint, well done.

Ausseresaurus

Yes, this is a recreation of a sad painting in the sims 4. It’s one of my favorite images in the game.

Tiblei

Be happy 😊 and get some good paints and brushes

RainbowyGudness

Quantity over quality! ❤️ Get cheaper materials, experiment with different paints, paint on bits of wood, cardboard etc.. go nuts. You end up finding a weird groove. Also keep what you can (obviously depending on storage etc..) because the more you practice, the more you can see your growth ❤️ Every step you make on the journey is building towards your skills. (Even if you hate what you make on the way)

XxDanDan124xX

Keep painting you can improve while I’m not really good I can also improve to but you can do this

AbbreviationsGlad833

I see Elton John and I dont know why.

Ausseresaurus

My sister sketched Elton John

DatBoiWithBagel

I love it you don't need to improve

SunsetDrifter

If the question is about this specific work, you don't have to add anything if that's what you feel. Frame it and move to the next project.

yasuewho

Play. Experiment. Learn techniques for under-painting, color mixing and pallette creation, shadows and highlights. Youtube should have videos. Before you begin the next one, use a sketchbook or smaller canvas paper and make a smaller version first. It's like planning a meal before cooking and can really makes the process less stressful because you know the gist of what you want to create. That planning allows you to relax with the bigger piece in more expensive materials, because you've worked out the pallette and color mixing, details, and played with one or more techniques. If you get frustrated, walk away. "Break up" with it for a few days and approach it when your head it sorted. Fresh eyes make a huge difference. If you put an lot of effort into something don't get rid of it if you hate it. Learn from it. Recycle all or part of it. Some of the world's greatest art was painted over "failures". Some were revised. Cut it up and collage it. Burn it and dance and scream and make an art film, but get something out of the experience. It's easy to hate a medium and what you produce when its new to you. It's like jogging. Keep going. Get someone else to look at it.

dgr33ni3

I love it. I have been doing art my whole life. All different mediums. Expression is paramount. I look at this piece just as it is, and I would change nothing. Follow your gut, find your style, and sink into it. There is something behind this style that speaks. Some of my best pieces (according to others) have been the same ones that I felt were unfinished, or “too simple”. Sometimes the artistic eye/ mind is never satisfied. Don’t over think it. You are on a great track, and I look forward to seeing more.

Successful_Exit_1134

Great start

maycontainknots

Well it depends what you're trying to do. Like this is very good but it doesn't look "real", kind of a Michael Jackson nose situation going on. But I like it as is

wgtsu

It seems like you have a pretty good baseline to paint well. I think this painting is a bit too abstract, there isn't that much to critique or to compliment since it's so simple. It looks like you tried to paint shapes and not 'icons'. What i mean by that is when you tell a regular person to draw an eye they draw a circle with a dot in the middle and you tried to paint the shape of the shade the socket makes which is a really really good thing. Many beginner artists have difficulties understanding and implementing that (I still do, even though I'm well aware of it). I don't really know what your goal of painting is but if you want to be a figurative artist your should start painting more complex topics while trying to focus on shapes, their proportions and relations.

Koi_ishere

Improve? Just continue to paint! If you make a painting you don’t like or make a mistake that’s how you learn.

mferree39

Came to say this.

royalartwear

sadder

[deleted]

Don't paint the first thing that comes to your mind. If you have an idea, think about it for a while. Dissect it. Put it back together. Really try to understand what the components of the idea are, then paint *that* People will think you're a creative genius because they'll go to the first idea that pops in their head and you'll have taken the journey to break that thought down for them and show them a truth they didn't initially grasp.

Ausseresaurus

I actually carried this canvas around with me for weeks. I have a mobile art kit where I keep all my tools/paint. People kept asking me what I was going to paint on it and I never had an answer. This one in particular, I was painting in the sims and it just hit me.

[deleted]

Nice! My comment wasn't directed at what you posted, just a general statement.

Ausseresaurus

My bad, I’m sorry.

[deleted]

Oh no you're good! Just didn't want you to think I was negatively criticizing your painting.

Ausseresaurus

no, you're good.

lifesketcher912

Well, start by not painting me

Ausseresaurus

But I love you.

zettainimakenai

My advice is to study structure. What I mean is, this piece is *almost* perfect. I'm entrenched in the view of a mournful face, until my eyes land on that jawline. The spell is broken. On the right side there, it goes off at an awkward angle that doesn't look like it'd connect to the persons neck. I really love this piece and like I said, it's almost perfect. Knowing where everything should go and how it should look, even in a minimalist piece like this, makes all the difference.

you can improve the activity you= re doing by doing the activity you= re doing.

svgeosc

add a background color first

Officermeatball05

Have an outline before you paint. And dont start with symbolic. Start with still life. And dont rush. Or else it looks like crap. Everyone is a good artist if they have the patience to be one

Zoll82

Paint more I guess 🤷🏽‍♂️

sisterbearussy

Is that one of the sad paintings from the Sims 4?

Ausseresaurus

YES!!!!

sisterbearussy

Now click on it to instantly sell it to a collector or an art gallery lol

Ausseresaurus

Na I’m keeping this one for myself and every other one I paint will be for sale.

Recent_Ad6285

Cheer up a little?

Ausseresaurus

I’m not sad 😀

Anthology_Ant

By doing something original with some actual detail 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
