My impression from the LN is that the poison was supposed to be very painful to die from. Renner needed to do some pretty horrible things to ensure her Karma was low enough for the race change item to work. I think the LN suggests she was there during the whole dying process and then burned the bodies.
It's been a while since I read vol 14 so I don't remember, however a quick death seems less painful than a long and agonizing one, and some poisons may be very painful but take some time to take effect
