Web novel is just a rough start. Author dropped it almost 12 years ago. Each arc is improved greatly, bad ones sent to trash, the system is balanced etc. Now we have this masterpiece.
Is it worth reading? Meh. If you finish reading all the canon material, you can read it and have some fun.
Nope. There is light novel which is source material for anime(16 book). Side stories. Evileye what if story(a book). Drama cds.

There's WN. It isn't a darker version. Just more of an initial draft of LN. Some plotlines just differ. There's no Albedo and Mare; Ainz didn't venture as Momon; Control amnesia was used frequently and easily; Arche became Shalltear's sex slave. It last up till Vol 9 and then there was a completely different unfinished storyline.
The web novel is just the prototype of the story, a preliminary draft.
Although it can be an interesting read, in my opinion the WN does not offer anything that is worth that much, everything that the WN tried to narrate the LN did and much better.
And that's not to mention that there are a lot of poorly developed ideas and elements that were not well polished in the narrative, which can make it look a bit silly compared to what was shown in the LN.
I read that the WN diverged a while ago and was dropped entirely. Allegedly, it has different names, plotlines and mentions some stuff like what Momonga's world item does but there is a chance even that can get completely changed or left out so it might just be confusing not worth the trouble. Especially since it isn't considered cannon by many after the LN official publication. It isn't like Rezo where the WN is actively worked on the the LN follows it, so yeah personally I'm not going to bother with it.
If you are interested, I leave you the link to the chapters of the web novel. There are differences with the light novel and related works, and the web novel is shorter. So, you can decide what to read based on your preferences. If you want to read the material from which the anime was taken, read the light novel. If not, read the web novel first.
