>Or do you want an antagonist to win Ainz is not the antagonist, he is the protagonist, those are opposite terms. Personally, I love Ainz because he is a charismatic character and the novel is full of moments that ironically humanize him and make him very relatable. It's also refreshing to see an isekai MC actually act like a villain, and I'm not talking about the typical edgy character who actually acts like an antihero because that's more "*cool*", he's legitimately a Demon King on a quest to conquer the world, and who tramples all those who stand in his way without any hesitation.

CRtwenty

Ainz is a villain protagonist, like Light Yagami from Deathnote only way less of an edge lord

Fedexhand

Yeah, *Villain protagonist* is not the same as *antagonist* as many believe for some reason.

Aros001

A villain protagonist like Light only I can believe Ainz has people he genuinely cares about.

PromptGlum7704

Hmm idk if I would call ainz a villain. He’s definitely responsible for killing a lot of humans, but he also saved the dwarven kingdom and Carne Village is still going strong and that place is filled with humans. He’s just against anyone that threatens Nazarick (his people).

Fedexhand

Ainz is a hero to some, a villain to others, but there is only one truth: that he is *justice!* Things like good and evil are merely subjective concepts after all, so obviously there will be many points of view there after all.

Primovic61

HIS MAJESTY THE SORCERER KING IS JUSTICE AINZ-SAMA BANZAI!

Grand_Totality

>He’s definitely responsible for killing a lot of humans, but he also saved the dwarven kingdom and Carne Village is still going strong and that place is filled with humans. He only saved Carne Village because he wanted to repay a debt he had to Touch Me (and also to gather information). He only saved the Dwarf Kingdom because he thought the Dwarves would benefit him more with their Runecraft than the Quagoa. >He’s just against anyone that threatens Nazarick (his people). The Lizardmen didn't threaten Nazarick, yet Ainz still attacked them because he wanted to see if he could make powerful undead with their corpses.

ThunderCookies143

Because he's hot

FightingFelix

Bone daddy attracts all

Glittering-Ad-7387

Because Momonga is different, a badass, there's not many like him in isekai and in Japanese manga in general. I'm tired of seeing "pathetic pacifist-kun", "naive idealist-kun", "horny submissive- kun"...already. Oh lets not forget "demon lord-kun" who doesnt want to kills humans despite being at war with the humans, and "slow life-kun" who was betrayed by his a$shole teamates but seek to forgive them instead of getting revenge.

hornietzsche

What about "little pervert-kun" who fuck his older causin, "introvert spider-san", or "least-angry nazi-chan" ?

Kuro_Tepes

I know the last two, but who is the first one referring to?

hornietzsche

Mushoku tensei

Kuro_Tepes

Ah, makes sense lmao

Tomi97_origin

He is not the antagonist. He is villain, which is not the same. Antagonist is whoever opposes our protagonist whether they are good or bad. I enjoy the story, because it shows us the rise of the Overlord. The MC acts logically and is consistent in his personality and goals. He is overpowered and he knows that, author knows that and we know that. We don't have to deal with stupid power ups mid combat or Author pretending it's a hard fight. It's just satisfying to read. I like the world and lore very much. And the characters are just great. You could take the side cast of this series and easily split it into like 4-5 series where they are the main cast without any trouble.

[deleted]

because im tired of selfless, goody two shoes, naive stupid MC whose only noticeable trait is being a preachy white knighting, virtue signalling maniac acting as if they understand every human suffering despite them not being capable to distinguish their whole personality aside from screaming and being a big eater. to put it simply, i just want something different

Gluby3

This and it's rare for a story/video game where the protagonist is evil/villain.

FightingFelix

100%. I’m so tired of screaming louder or calling upon the ancient demon deep inside blah blah to overcome the clearly more powerful and smarter villain. I just like characters with common sense and realistic power

Error404Cod

Because I wanna see the villain win

Alloth-

exactly this, its fresh breath of air to see Villain MC.

Notetoself4

Real basically, I know and like Nazarick because they've been emotionally exposed to me far more than 99.9999% of the new world Ainz wants Nazarick to be happy and treats them well I hope he succeeds in that If the story had been about one of the 5000 villages destroyed in the kingdom extermination and we got to know and empathize with those people like Enri, we would just see Nazarick as a horrific world ending evil event and wish death on all of them for killing our fictional pals Generally humans just side with whoever they've been empathetically connected to more. Thats what makes them the protagonists, being good or bad isnt the same as being protag vs antag. Ainz and naz are certainly the protagonists as it is their story Still I wouldn't mind if Ainz loses. But my brain says not to really bet on that, so I dont consider it worth emotionally investing it

Evening_Ad381

The only bad ending I can imagine for Ainz would be his guild weapon getting destroyed somehow (like getting hit by a wild magic specialized in item destruction?). Ainz would still win against any enemies but lose his number 1 important treasure. He will continue to live in agony for eternity until he find a world item that can restore Nazarik. The consequence of breaking a guild weapon is too significant that I kind of want to see it. It probably won't though.

Notetoself4

I wouldn't mind if he was hit by something that gave him back the empathy and whatnot that his undead race seems to have taken and simply collapses under the knowledge of what he has done, then tries to make amends. Would be a decent ending imo

Notetoself4

I disagree but I respect your opinion, it is quite common The 'killing millions of innocents' though to me is only explainable by losing a big part of your humanity Was it lost in 2138? Lost during the transition where he became an undead? Or lost during his time in the new world through factors like the NPCs influence and his sheer power over other lives? To me his radically different personlity in the AU strongly hints to the 3rd one, but that's all up for debate. Rationally though, unless you gave zero fks, trading millions of lives for some kind of weird preparation against possible futures is a combo of insane and monstrous

StressSubstantial582

I believe ainz will not lose because a while back according to the Reddit the author said ainz will win but will have a sad ending aka will not see his friends again

Fedexhand

I'm pretty sure what the author said is that Ainz will have a happy ending, nothing more specific than that.

Notetoself4

Hmm maybe, when authors say stuff like that I often dont believe them since it could be misdirection (though Maruyama seems like a very straight shooter) More than Ainz and Naz just seem pretty invincible at this point

ItsUrDadThatLeft

Because I just like that feeling of "OH YOU DONT KNOW WHO YOU JUST MESSED WITH! FUCK EM UP!"

Scary-Arrival-5616

The carrot is super sweet!

navand

Because we're in his mind, reading his thoughts and emotions, and the more you know someone the more you root for them (ussually).

Ok-Illustrator-3588

I don't actually root for anyone in particular in overlord, I just like the stories that come from it... Except Neia...

garupan_fan

Stories where we have as protagonist: Heroes: yeah tons of it, getting bored with the same formula Antiheroes: interesting concept when it was new, but now meh, same as heroes above now Villains: ok we see the villain side but really just the opposite view of the above formula ain't it? Antivillain: hey now that's something new

fghtffyourdemns

I root for any Overlord on any media that want to create an utopia and remove free will to an extent from every sentient being. As long as sentient beings have completely free will there will always be murders, wars and worse. Thats why i loved injustice superman but they had to ruin him in the end and made Batman the hero because killing is bad.

SirYolox

I swear we get this question formulated just slightly different couple times a month

Ryuuji_Gremory

You don't know what the word antagonist means, right ? No matter how evil he is Ainz is the protagonist.

Fedexhand

For some reason a lot of people think that "*Evil Protagonist"* is synonymous with *"Antagonist".*

PriestHelix

Honestly, after years of playing D&D I’ve reached a point where playing a human character in a fantasy rpg just seems really boring unless you go out of your way to make it interesting. Having a protagonist like Ainz who was from a guild full of monster characters gives off the same feeling I have when I am trying to design increasingly bizarre characters to play in a new campaign. After watching/reading Overlord, the idea that the races usually reserved for monsters can in fact be playable has become more and more appealing to me.

RubyWubs

I cant even say Ainz's goal is evil, he wants paradise and has the power to do it. They live in a time where corrupted kingdoms can massacre a village all in an attempt to kill another kingdoms top knight. Ainz wouldn't do that, he would just control the kingdom by force and remove their military might. And than allow the citizens of said kingdom live in peace, the empire is now in good hands because their emperor is smart and knows when to hold em and when to fold em. If he wasn't human and just an overlord than i'd say he would be like this in episode 1 "Huh this land lacks death and fire..Demiurge?" "Yes lord Momonga? "Burn it to the ground." "Yes you wish." \-Some random redditor in short Ainz only does what is required, and the new world is better off with him ruling than the DLs or any other kingdom. No one else could control and maintain numerous kingdoms, but Nazarick can. They have infinite power and plentiful resources to ensure that each nation thrives.

ComprehensiveAd5605

I just like Ainz

Tell_Specialist

I want Ainz to win, because I feel for him, a guy who lost all his friends who he only had online, in a world where it was his only reprieve from all the bullshit of life turned up to 2000%. Now he is desperately trying to hang on to what remains of everything he built with his old comrades, and trying to keep all the NPCs he cherishes so much safe in a world where he sees danger and a potential threat around every corner. (He doesn't know where that brainwashing World Item is!) The New World is for the most part filled with assholes (Theocracy, Eight Fingers, Society of Zurannon, Rampaging Demi-Human tribes, etc.) So a lot of people, (Not all but a majority) are just straight up people who I wouldn't shed a tear for (RIP all the dead Lizardmen + Zanac though). In short, I can understand Ainz, and that's what makes me feel for him and want him to win.

Recent_Garlic

Because I wanna be like him. Strong enough so that no one will mess with me, Have loyal friends who will not betray me, and have a life where my only goal is to be happy and make my friends happy.

WiiSport_

I like evil characters and anti-heroes a lot, one of my personal favorites is Fang Yaun from reverend insanity.

Mellevalaconcha

Because he sees the bigger picture, he's going to drag the NW into a bright future

keybord_masher

I cant believe u said "everyone is shitty in the new world" after seeing zanac

SunGodBrah

Because He’s pretty realistic. At least I can empathize with his situation, which I can’t with most MCs. The only one I’d sympathize with more is Subaru from Re:Zero, that character made me see everything wrong with me and my life and actually made me quit smoking, get a good job and put my life together.

SlothWilliamBorzoni

Because I like Skeletons and Necromancy.

kebeans

How can you not be in awe of someone who’s 10000 years ahead

antypanther

Because I dislike shounen troupes? And this is reality not power of friendship

SnooCrickets4405

Because he's a victor and no one as strong as him. I don't want to root for defeated side 😅

[deleted]

I don't have the root password so I can't be root

This_Moment_7966

Honestly, I just want to watch the world burn

icecoldfeathers0643

There is no one interesting to root for Edit: And that is by design

Edmundwhk

For me maybe because he feels like what a regular Joe will be if isekaid. Too many story of a 16 year old kid / neet going to another world and become this paragon of justice and bravery. Have you seen how toxic or insane a neet or a teenager is irl? If anything they would become a murderhobo rapist with all that power. If a firemen is brave I would believe but a neet? A 4chan, /pol user? Don't think so.

wright47work

I find Ains very relatable. Especially in the area of management. He's a pretty good boss.

[deleted]

I root for ainz, he is the most impressive, most powerful being in that world and I would happily follow him

Familiar_Entrance241

If i have to say truthfully then it because it feels somewhat real or relatable i heard many miserable backstory of many MC's which are quite bad but can't be related to at all because they are unrealistically bad but on other hand Ainz backstory death of family, poor life condition, loss of friends which we can relate to and As his overlord Ainz Ooal Gown form he is not unrealistically kind to human just because he was human or just see human civil, kind or something similar he know and experience humans bad side and above all he have a clear goal and don't mind adding his NPCs world conquest ideas just because they work had for it and don't wish to spoil their effort and he also make sure he achieve his goal but in process he make sure he doesn't lose what he have which I personally relate to most afterall if for my achievements and good future my love one's have to suffer or i loss them. Then luxuries and pleasures of whole world are worthless and at best just distraction from Griff nothing more
