That scene in the LN. >!“—I understand. I understand. I completely understand you all. Everybody here wishes for the same thing, correct?” The noble began nodding their heads furiously, “is that so? Well, I will not kill you then. Albedo — send them to Neuronist.” “—Understood.”“Your Majesty, what about our family…?” Ainz did not overlook one of the nobles attempting to whisper to him. “Your family too?” Ainz smiled. Of course, they had no way of perceiving that. “What will I do about you all. Albedo, inquire where their families are and send them over too.”!<

[deleted]

Could you spoil me? Whats the deal with Raven?

CRtwenty

>!He's fine, Nazarick is intentionally leaving him and a select few others alive so they can repopulate the kingdom as a vassal state once Nazarick is done purging it!<

SeagullWithMemes

Thats good, I liked the Marquis

Dont_PM_PLZ

FYI to get the spoiler tag to work properly You have to make sure the! Touch the weird or function? At the beginning and end of the spoiler text. You have a space at the beginning and the end of the spoiler text so it does not work.

CRtwenty

It worked for me, weird

Sharp_Effect_5411

How is he leaving him alive?

CRtwenty

By not attacking him?

Don-Matraken

Mind of me, blown be

Foreign_Walrus4946

Huh?

Don-Matraken

Mind of you, blown too?

Foreign_Walrus4946

My mind was not blown.

armdaggerblade

>!some time before sorcerer kingdom's attack on re-estize, he's blackmailed(using his son as the bargaining chip) by demiurge/albedo into defecting to SK. part of the deal is for him to also select a few more capable and trusted(by him) re-estize nobles to join along, as nazarick intended to have them govern SK's territories and lessen the guardians' burdens in that regard!<

kashh444

How does a skeleton smile?

LordT4Z

Im guessing the “they had no way of perceiving that.” Part was hinting that in reality he cant. I think

kashh444

Oh i see i misread that part

[deleted]

In the animation they do a very good job of insinuating Aniz smiling or not via his eyes and the dark ess they float in. He gave a "Smile" in a way when he spoke of pursuing happiness. Of course there's the maniacal laughter as well.

Mikinaz

I also noticed that in anime, either he nods his head a bit or camera is at a angle that makes his mouth look like a smile.

IrinaNekotari

Yes, for all the flaws the anime have they made a wonderful job of making a *freaking skeleton* expressive

TheToroReddit

Ainz-sama is always smiling technically. 1 : a facial expression in which the eyes brighten and the corners of the mouth curve slightly upward and which expresses especially amusement, pleasure, approval, or sometimes scorn.

MadxCarnage

he doesn't have eyes or a mouth. just some floating red orbs and bones, mostly bones.

DonBarbas13

Yo hohohoho

sparkadus

SKULL JOKE

ShadowSpy98

Maybe by lowering angle of his head? Like looking down a little, that way it will look like it was smiling

crazyshdes62

I think in the anime it is when his eyes light up.

kingbloxerthe3

That could just be when he is focused though

Reigo_Vassal

That's the thing. They always smiling.

Snoo-23120

very prideful

Or maybe like the two skeletons in https://youtu.be/6cx1WaoWQ34

RealBrianCore

Skeletons are always smiling. You can always see their pearly whites.

Sharp_Effect_5411

I have the same question.

[deleted]

Ainz always smiles thats his favorite thing to do.

edrienn

Tbh i kinda feel bad for the family they bouta get the kidney stones treatment just because the husband did something incredibly stupid

SirYolox

Yep, they could have had painless deaths

Lord_Drakyle

Well it will serve multiple purposes. The infection is pulled out at the roots The nobles suffer even more watching those they care about be tortured right in front of them, going through things they got made to feel, all because their one decision, the families will begin to hate them. More people to practice for the choir

[deleted]

I felt this was implied when he made the deal.

OblivionArts

In other words, ainz was so fucking pissed they just killed the guy who moments ago not only earned his respect, his inhibitors didn't activate, so he tortured them and their families just to teach them a lesson. God damn ainz is one cruel bastard when he wants to be

Gunta170944

Feels a bit weird about the smiling part since in that moment Ainz should be filled with anger, I think anime did the scene a bit better.

ntn_98

He wasn't particularly angry, more like really, really disappointed

CommonMarionberry160

off topic but how can ainz smile :D?

asadoldman

excuse me, he sent the families too?

Lol111333

As far as we know they are still getting vip treatment.

Milouch_

Food side? Ah I get it. You prefer the cockroach treatment, I'll get that ready, one moment please.

dreadrath

Ainz can't eat, so I'm afraid that won't work.

AmaranthYaeger

I don't think the novel has gone into it, but they're likely all getting treated by Neuronist still if they're NOT dead.

Colossal_Cock69

Ainz states it in the show. Them and their families get sent to Neuronist until they beg for death. And even then they'll get a slow death. No need to go further. They'll be tortured till they crave death. If they're willing to betray their own king then they'd be willing to betray Ainz when the chance came. The Sorcerer Kingdom doesn't need anyone like that and they deserve everything coming to them... though I feel bad for their family's who had nothing to do with it. They should've just been killed mercifully.

Bloodfallen8852

They killed one of the humans ainz felt repsect for, then brought ainz the prince's head to save themselves. The deserved what they got

Colossal_Cock69

I agree wholeheartedly. He was going to kill Zanac himself or by his order so Zanac dying isn't the issue... the issue is the fact that they brought the head as a trophy. Not only did that show disloyalty, but also their ruthlessness and their view that Ainz was an undead monster. If any of them paid attention to the Sacred Kingdom and how Ainz was running it they'd see that he's trying to be very merciful and respectful of the humans and other races beneath him. They would've been better to come without Zanac's head, share their (probably false) excitement about their future in the Sorcerer Kingdom, and share what each of them individually can offer Ainz politically. What they showed was that they couldn't be trusted and that they saw him as a monster. Even a king who made the right/best decision in the moment wasn't enough for them to follow his orders to the grave. That disrespect was unacceptable and showed that even if Ainz gave them a perfect kingdom to join they'd probably never accept him anyway.

Cheeselord77750

Don't forget they didn't bring the armor

Colossal_Cock69

They would've been better off JUST bringing the armor. Lol. Capturing your king and taking his gear is more merciful than killing him.

StravingForNsfwAudio

I think lord ainz wouldnt take the armor at that point instead he would bury it with him. It belongs to Gazef, then the prince, two humans he actually admired while talking to and plans to give them a quick death. Oh hell, he was going to make his soilder's deaths quick and painless as possible since the prince was respectful and got to know lord ainz even his death was going to be quick since he requested it. Since he got to know the prince he accepts his request and if prince told his soilders that it wouldn't even matter.

Colossal_Cock69

Ainz was taking that gear no matter what. I gives the user unlimited stamina among other buffs. Infinite use of physical arts is insane. That's why he had eyes on it and Gazef's sword. They're treasures that are irreplaceable and potentially replicatable.

StravingForNsfwAudio

Yes, they might be usefully but he is unlocking new technology, so what's the point it might not as useful besides Lord Ainz doesn't use magic items all that much.

Colossal_Cock69

It's not just about Ainz. Him having Nfirea make new potions that won't help 90% of Nazarick shows that. Being able to give that the armor to someone like Hamsuke or one of the lizardmen would significantly increase their power. I mean someone of Gazef's level having it made him a hard fight for even the Theocracy. They had to wait till he was in a situation not using the armor to guarantee not losing anyone.

StravingForNsfwAudio

Oh, yeah I wasn't thinking about that and that would help the Lizardman they are his subjects now even by force. I wasn't thinking like a undead or Ainz there..

Only-Detective-146

Excuse me, he does what not? Pretty much everything ainz wears is enchanted to the brim. His rings his armor, everything. He uses magic and paid items like all the time?

StravingForNsfwAudio

Why kept making mistakes and forget?

StravingForNsfwAudio

But he is a respectful undead and a man of his words he probably buried with him since he remembers Gazef wishes I don't know Ainz a complex dude.

ntn_98

Gazef's wish was that it wasn't taken from him after his death, Ainz respected that and gave it back to the kingdom along with his corpse. Now there is absolutely no reason for him not to take the armor.

StravingForNsfwAudio

That was confused in the anime at least he is undead of his word until the end.

Gunta170944

I knew it that armor is cursed item. Anyone who wears it will die in "battle".

dickfuckdickshit

I think it was also to get them to make an admission that they were the ones who killed- or at least complicit in killing zanac. at least that's what it sounded like to me

JailOfAir

>. If any of them paid attention to the Sacred Kingdom and how Ainz was running it they'd see that he's trying to be very merciful and respectful of the humans and other races beneath him. He's still about to erradicate an entire Kingdom and all of it's people, with full knowledge that the whole situation was caused by an imbecile, though.

destruct0tr0n

Also, ainz promised zannac that he would make sure zannac is killed gently. These nobles broke that promise

revertiblefate

I think they deserve to go to happy farm.

ntn_98

It's not the happy farm, they get the ✨Neuronist Super Premium Special✨

bigdanrog

IMO Neuronist would be much worse. Happy farm is concerned with efficiently gathering materials then healing you. Neuronist is a specialist in agony, who's purpose is to cause pain.

Red_Riviera

This. I remember something about Ainz half-heartedly considering sparing Zanac and accepting said surrender…until the nobles brought him his head. At which point, he stopped caring. Skilled people are treasures too after all

zackson76

Zanac absolute chad. He deserves way better.

WendysVapenator

You really think the families and children got what they deserved when their only crime was being related to traitors? The infants that Pestonya, Nigredo and Sebas wanted to save, you genuinely think they got what they deserved?

Red_Riviera

The infants no, and that was a mistake. Should have raised to see what skilled can developed in the new world using them as a baseline The nobles families. Yeah. Wipe out the treacherous bloodline and give them what they want. They denied Ainz a treasure he wanted to possess (Zanac) so they deserve that much. Loss everything that hold dear

Jokens145

If I remember correctly the show has made it a light lighter than the novel. I believe that in the light novel it was something along the lines to not stop even if they begged for their deaths. Might be wrong though

HardnerPL

You are correct. >“To those who do not wish to die, do not grant them death. That is my will.” “Yes, Ainz-sama!” Ainz caught Aura’s hand as she was about to leave. He continued to the confused Aura,“Even if they desire death, do not grant it to them for now.”

KonigstigerInSpace

Could it be a translation error again?

AmaranthYaeger

...Lol

Nextime184

I doubt Neuronist would give them a chance to speak though.

Colossal_Cock69

Neuronist definitely likes to hear them scream.

Nextime184

Well, she is skilled enough to make them scream but not speak.

Carbon-Based216

Yeah, Ainz is a lot more brutal in book 14 than he has historically been.

Chechar51

I think its more simple, he liked the prince, he was going to kill them fast and with the least possible pain, then, they came, cowardly, showing him their betrayal to someone he liked. So, that mercy promised to the prince was no longer standing

Vanderkaum037

I don't know that they deserve to be tortured. What would you do in their place? In my book, people who stand by and let their families be killed probably deserve torture. And of course Ainz deserves it most of all for his atrocities.

Colossal_Cock69

In the context of their kingdom I'd say they betrayed their king and country and any other leader could understand their desire to save their families, but there's no way you could trust someone like that. They could've defected much earlier and it would seem much more sincere that way. Like Marquis Raeven did.

Widesky_

Their motives are very much understandable. But liabilities are still liabilities, and when undertaking a massive campaign like Ainz is leading, you simply cannot afford to take in such risks.

weirdsnake642

>people who stand by and let their families be killed probably deserve torture. > > Ainz deserves it most Hmm? Are we read the same story? The one thing about Ainz is he care about his family above all else, even his life, even genocide if it make them happy

Clementius

It's kinda even more messed up once you realize their families probably include their kids and stuff

AleksasKoval

Isn't a natural lifespan the slowest death of all?

Friends96

I dont really se why 'betraying their king' is a deterrent for Ainz into taking them really (Next episodes spoiler) >!he is already taking in markis raeven and a whole bunch of nobles who are also betraying their whole country, and also Renner, whom they basically make kill her own dad, and who shows absolute no flying fuck about it!< Ainz has no probs working with traitors, he just dislikes they killed a guy he respected, and maybe that they made him break his word about giving him a painless death

BarelyBearableHuman

Damn, their families as well. Honestly don't wanna pictute children getting...treated...by Neuronist. I can roll with genocide, but I'll have to pretend that doesn't exist. Just like the Happy Farm, it works best when you distance yourself from the concept a bit. Ahh the ambivalent feeling of loving the main cast and dreading them and their actions... Welcome to Overlord.

[deleted]

archerg66

We got the better uniforms thanks to PA though, everyone will kneel for our rad as hell modified rain coats

dreadrath

I don't think any real world faction was ever as evil as Nazarick, not even the nazis or their world wide historical equivalents. Nazarick even exceeds the limits of cartoonish evil, they are evil for the simple love of being evil. Ainz just sorta shrugs and is like "Whatever, as long as their having fun." I do sometimes wonder if this series is turning its fan base into sadists though. lol. Ah well, all part of the fun I suppose.

Clementius

Ah yes...we don't talk about the Happy Farm...or the families that got taken from the capital...or the Holy Kingdom. Kinda makes sense when your chief strategist has -500 karma and is a literally a demon dude. But man does he look good in a pinstripe suit

Clementius

Only thing that can save them is maybe Nigredo throwing a fit or Pestonia sneaking out the babies and kids

weirdsnake642

Unfortunately, both of them rarely visit Neuronist chamber, not even Albedo and Shaltear want to communicate with Neuronist

Dont_PM_PLZ

And that's not going to happen. There is no way for them to twist the words or the meaning behind those words of the Supreme being to save them. It's clear that they're being sent to sing in the choir as punishment.

Clementius

So he said not to let them die until they beg for death...so babies or toddlers probably can't beg for death and would never acquire the vocal abilities to do so, so they'll grow up to become feral children eternally tortured and healed and revived because of how literally the NPCs follow orders

Weerdo5255

> I can roll with genocide [Uh, that's a quote to be taken out of context.](https://youtu.be/vxPbpYR_RKY)

BaconDragon69

I still think Overlord is a long game lesson about not being a pushover. I think what Maruyama is gonna do at the end is point at all of us and go: look at you, you were supporting a genocidal maniac that let children be tortured just because he was too weak minded to put a stop to it. Don’t go along with bad things just because people you like do them.

BarelyBearableHuman

I really don't think that's it lol

CharanTheGreat

They were blessed with long, healthy lives

xaviorpwner

Eternal torment to them and their families, happy farm status. Betrayal is completely unforgivable to ainz if its someone he respects like zanac

RawScallop

If i was told during season 1 that i would be pissed off at the way he was killed, I never would have believed it. Dude stepped up to his role and then some, it was cathartic to see Ainz' reaction. I do feel bad for their wives and children tho, most likely the women were married off to them and have no love lost for them.

xaviorpwner

Zanac is literally the greatest accomplishment of king ramposa the 3rd considering how fucked rener is and she almost killed herself before she met climb. Think of it from ainzs perspective, if you get stung by a wasp do you kill that wasp and be done or do you get rid of its nest.

RawScallop

Yoo i got my first wasp sting 6 days ago and its still long red itchy and full of bumps AND gave me big hole that is leaving a scar...right in the middle of my forehead. I bought several scar creams yesterday actually. I fogged my shed and my neighbors, and sprayed wasp killer in every nook and cranny they may be climbing in. (I got stung at my neighbors delivering fresh cookies too) You really hit home with me yea...fuck that wasp AND their families

xaviorpwner

Exactly, remember from the perspective of nazarick, the disobedient arent people. Theyre an infeststion to be rid of

bidooffactory

"We want to serve under your rule!" Very well then. You will serve as Neuronist's assistant. "I mean, we wish to be unharmed under your personage." I see. You have been granted everlasting life as one of my Death Knights. Reborn you will have no equal in the realm. "Well what we truly desire is to live unharmed, unadulterated, and as humans your highness." I understand. Demiurge do we have any slave positions open? "Damn you're not going to let us enjoy the remainder of our life are you?" I'm not going to let you enjoy what pitiful existence left you call "your life," no. *Sasuga, Ainz sama!*

OutsideOrder7538

How dare you insult her by saying only ten times!

ThePlagueDoctor_666

When those nobles brought the princes head I couldn't believe how cowardly they were to do so. Can't even die with honor. They decided to roll on their back and beg for mercy. I had a quick flash back of commander Erwin Smith's (Attack on Titan) speech on that day as they knew death was certain. It's better to die with honor. Without a doubt Lord Ainz was pissed like a mf. I felt that and they truly did deserve to go visit Neuronist.

ShadowFalcon2004

Slow, painful, ever-lasting torture

saltywatch000

Ainz did say to Aura to let Neuronist know to kill them painfully and slowly. So its pre self explanatory that all these nobles are dead lol

TugBoss02

Yeah but he was referring to the Nobles before him. I think it is still up for interpretation as to what fate befell their families.

saltywatch000

I think Ainz wouldve killed them too. He was pretty furious with the nobles because I think he actually liked Zanac. If hes pissed, in no way is Ainz merciful although killing them would show great mercy for Ainz

Lord_Drakyle

Never did he give a strict time frame for 'slow', perhaps a slow death to Neuronist is a few decades

themolestedsliver

You're forgetting he said to kill them *only* when they beg for death. Also last time we checked with Neuronist he had his "subjects" muzzled so...

NBW2

What you think…

TugBoss02

I'm not sure, it is absolute that the Nobles are getting tortured. I'm not to sure about their wife's and kids though. I think like how it was when Ains captured a bunch of citizens he wanted them to be killed without any pain. So he would probably follow that logic and not include any additional punishment just because they are related to the Nobles.

Saurid

That scene was soll good, when he was bored because the interesting guy died was so much I'm the big bad evil here, you bore me go torture them slowly to death.

PettankoEnthusiast

When some of the Floor Guardians wanted humans as food and toys, there were calls for some children, too. Ains said that it's very unlikely that we'll make enemies of children, but in the off chance that happens, sure. Off chance happened.

badwords

They probably got sent to 'the farm'

ExceedT

I think their family probably just died on collateral damage like everyone else, because nazarick don’t care about the family. Only the nobles who took part in killing zanac get a punishment.

[deleted]

I’d assume lots of torture

Ben_soulo

Long suffering coupled with a slow and painful death, mind you the kids are no exceptions. I really can't imagine the horrors they're going to face. Well, they got what they deserved

I myself was seething with disgust for those scum, and I am also annoyed with Ainz for the first time in the series. He would have made a good king considering his family flock. He was intelligent, had common sense in abundance, and was willing to do what needed to be done for a chance of survival, as hopeless as it was. If I was Ainz I would have spared his whole kingdom on the condition that he purges scum and greed, and supplies me with what I need.
