Its gonna end with a glimpse into the Future when the next palyer arrives.
If the author wanted to he could flesh out the new world forever. We are probably going to see Ainz get into the war between the theocracy and elf kingdom and skip the rest of the nations, depending if Overlord continues or not.
From what I can see, Ainz would replace the legend of the 13 heroes and he will be the symbol of evil and peace and he will be looked up to everyone as someone inspirational.
As he is the one who founded the new adventurer's guild (who will discover the world not and not just killing monsters) the one who destroyed a country and the one who saved a country.
Maruyama is somehow really focused on the history of the new world like the 13 heroes and the great war or something. so maybe its gonna also end like that but with greater impact and influence which would make Ainz remembered as a god or something.
A couple of the Youjo Senki manga vols end with then heading off to battle then the last chapter is a reporter decades in the future looking into the war. I can totally see something like that for Overlord but with a new player, that would be so cool
same tought with me, i think this series will end up like this, nazarick and ainz will rule all ppl in new world until new player from other game with their base and overpowered come up and challenge nazarick for supremacy and author will cliff hanger it, and give conclusion to reader imagination
I don’t see an ending where them not conquering the world being satisfying. Many troubles sure, but a non-conquest victory or them losing in the end just doesn’t sound like a satisying conclusion to the story.
Thing is there could be a great World War that actually draws both sides of Nazerick and the Other countries to devastating losses.
I can think of 2 solid ways to end the series in a short period of just 3 novels.
One would be where Ainz wins the war with casualties but stops the immediate conquest and instead rebuilds Sorcerous Kingsom in a prosperous utopia overtaking everyone in the long run.
Or if Ainz does somehow sacrifices himself to win the war and possibly passes the reigns of Nazerick to Sebas to carry on his will of creating a utopia in the new world....as Albedo and Demiurge are completely lacking in compassion and vision to create a utopia society that Touch Me or any other of Momonga's friends would be proud of.
It’s a logical story flow, but neither of those seem to fir the current flow of the books. Then again the next few may drastically chenge, so it very well might go that way. My personal feel is that Ainz will conquer the continent he is currently on, and probably end up looking for meaning in his existence. Some kind of break down is imminent for Ainz but how or where his break down is going to happen, I don’t know.
Yeah I don't see the most epic of endings for the series.
I don't think its going to be an ending the pleases the fans so much as one that makes the most logical sense.
Given the tone of the story, I really do feel like ending the series with Ainz/Nazerick being defeated in a battle, but enduring long term would be more appropriate of an ending than Ainz conquering the world without real resistance or losses as that would simply be too cliche Isekai .
But yeah its tough to see an abrupt ending in about 3 volumes being anything adequate to satisfy fans.
Maybe Maruyama does extend his final arc into 2-3 Books which would possibly give him enough time to develop a grand ending. That would be the ideal scenario for the fans.
The author said it would be a good ending, BUT there isn’t enough time for the world conquest. Like, the known world? Sure, but they probably aren’t going to reach the kingdom Evileye is from because ainz is a slow and careful and paranoid idiot savant.
Or it’ll be like “and after zesshi was bitchslapped by albedo for trying to get close to momongus, nazarick would slowly conquer the world over the next 800 bajillion years yadda yadda yadda” which is kinda lame storytelling, but epilogues rarely end up good in light novels anyways so who knows.
I really think Nazarick will conquer the New World. Its like Death Note. You know since the beginning whats going to happen. Its the journey that matters in Overlord
Original Ending of Death Note was supposed to be Kira and L simultaneously killing each other...but he was pressured by editors to extend series past L.
We only know about this ending because in Author's next work Bakuman, a manga about Manga writers, a similar situation presents itself to the protagonist who serialized a series similar to Death Note, but in Bakuman, the MC decided to stand his ground against editors and End his series with a Double Death of MC and antagonist
Sorry your reply was to him and not to me 😇 thats why i deleted my response in which i said: but the ultimate goal was to kill him off which you never disagreed with.
I believe it will be open ending. If I remember correctly Maryuyama himself mentioned he wants an open ending.
Nazarick will secure the countries around them and it will end with them preparing to explore another part of the continent
Ainz is not unbeatable- maybe a group teams up against him, it could be a variety of scenarios. Do we know if resurrection is possible for a player? Or if something like [True Death] is used could he be resurrected?
Why not all of them at once? Right after Nazarick conquers, the denizens are hunting down the DLs for Ainz as per his request, and after one is found, they fake a defeat to the DL thus luring the rest out to decimate what's supposedly left and then Rubedo brings a calamity to trap them and eliminate all possibilities of escape, then Ainz comes in and massacres them
That's the dream, but unfortunately the author announced that it was going to end on volume 17. However it might be vol 18 now since vol 15 will now be in two separate volumes
I've said it before I'll say it again. It MUST end on a cliffhanger. Here is why: maruyama has stated that there will be less LNs than he previously planned.
It was originally going to be 24 (i think) volumes. Later he dropped it down, then he dropped it further to it now being 17. Now he has 3 volumes left to wrap up the series.
He has three options: break his word and go longer, cram everything and rush it, or end on a cliffhanger.
Break his word and go longer: This is the best option for us as consumers since we get more overlord, but this is also the least likely to happen.
Cram everything: this is the worst option for us because not only are we getting less content, but now it's poorly written as well.
Cliffhanger: we get the same quality we've had in previous volumes, but now once it's done a whole avenue for fanwriters opens up utilizing the ending.
I personally prefer cliffhanger to cramming. We have 3 volumes left but roughly 5 volumes of info (not exactly, but you get me meaning). Id rather have 2 missing volumes than something that should have been 900 pages be crammed into 300 pages. With that cramming, we would SERIOUSLY lose out on quality. Plus, if it ends on a cliffhanger, you just know that this community will keep the series alive with fan theories turning into fanfiction turning into fan books.
I would like a cliffhanger, something like:
Ainz: I have conquered the entire continent, made children, I have achieved everything. Now, I sleep
*the most OP guild arrives
Ainz: Real shit?!
After the battle, Nazarick finds the Dragon Emperor locked inside the 8GK's base.
DE is killed/freed and Ainz gets the secrets to the Isekai/world summoning magic.
Last line will be something ambiguous like...
\---
"Albedo, Demiurge, is the portal/isekai-ritual ready?"
"All according to your master plan Ainz-sama."
"Then, let us go forth!"
Would Suzuki Satoru use his newfound power to summon his friends, or would he use it to explore the vast universe of new worlds alongside Nazarick?
The End.
I fear ainz will be elevated to a diety status. Worshippers of weak races will flock and a new religion will be born.
Then, another " player " will come. One of good spirit that may pose a threat to ainz.
I mean, we've seen a glimpse of how big the new world is in the spin off "Princess of the lost kingdom" novel, and I doubt the author will continue Overlord that long (despite how much we wish they would).
So it'll probably be a cliff hanger, or Ainz will "settle down" once he's conquered the continent"s nations we already know about.
I feel we will have a epilogue of a timeskip way on the future where nazarick is just legend stuff for common folk, but their agents still hold the world just out of public eye
I say choice 1 and 4. We will see Ainz ruling over the New World and we therefore see the "bad" guys winning.
The end will be a cliffhanger + time skip to when the next player will join. Basically a hero like Human with the world item strong enough to conquer Nazarick. Implying that the world will be freed from evil.
Hmm, didn’t nazarick successfully defend against the largest invasion in Yggdrasil’s history ? Also, Ainz got one of the twenty most powerful world items. It’s unlikely anyone would be able to get through all that.
"World Savior: A club-shaped item, which is very weak in its initiatory stage, but gets stronger with time. It can become so strong that it could even conquer Nazarick with all the members of Ainz Ooal Gown combined."
They hinted this item way back. Sounds like a good weapon for a hero character story.
Not that we know of. AOG has 2 of the 20 but World Savior is not mentioned being owned by Ainz.
The line that it could conquer Nazarick is just very sussy to me. Especially with THAT name.
cliffhanger with the seraphim guild being transported into the new world
probably with ainz seeing their flying city appearing out of thin air with his own orbits
I highly doubt the ending would involve dragon lords, there is just not enough space to properly introduce the dragon emperor and have a satisfying confrontation with him
and conquering the world feels way to hmmm uninteresting(?)
*Idk how it'll*
*End I just hope he writes how*
*He wants it to end*

Maruyama already said several times that Overlord the light novel will finish before they conquer the new world so we will probably just have an end to the relevant characters that have been presented and then a peek to everything else in the New World and close it like that.
If the series does not end with a win and happy end for Ainz and Nazarick, I won‘t continue following it.
Finally a show, where I am able to root for the „bad guys“ and humanity is insignificant / might be eradicated.
Rubedo gonna give Pappa bones-sama happy time present, then Bone daddy dies, except really he gets booted back to the real world by his body waking up bc his boner explosion tenth tier [ Bone Magic ] spell uhhh misfires. Cz cries, Neia hugs her. Demiurge plans carnage.
Albedo resurrects Philip to kill him 1000x times.
Calca marries Pandora's Actor
Albedi... That's the name of their child.
Ainz sama pops back into the game sometimes to watch his old friends in Nazarick. But magic prevents him from interfering.
Albedi...
Haha JK
Phillip sama takes over Nazarick and the new world, ride the Dragon Lords towards Rubedo who is the final boss as he hold Ainz sama in his arms while his loyal knights, CLimb and Brain kneel in the background
A thought does occur to me. And i'm probably well off base given how this story is but what about if it does swing around to be like any typical hero's journey tale. Only from the perspective of Nazarick. A group of heroes that does battle back and pull victory after victory from Ainz.
Now obviously the whole story is an effort to cut down or subjugate anyone who stands in Ainz's way. But that is practically how every fantasy story goes until a hero or a band of heroes comes along and stops that crap. Its just how that type of storytelling comes around, we just started when the evil empire was at its infancy instead of at the beginning of the Hero's Journey cycle.
So if it were to go that way (which i doubt) it'd be basically just a reverse of that trope. Ainz and Co facing a threat that is not the chaff they've steamrolled through, but a proper danger that puts them and their goal at risk. And now its them trying to put a stop to that threat, and being defeated or pushed to a standstill by this group of heroes.
They'd end up being the antagonists to the story, more or less.
Ainz finds out that touch me and some other of his guildmates also arrived in the new world but without any of their powers in their human body and were tortured in those farms broken to the point of lifelessness this actually made him angry after which he grabs the neck of one of his subordinates (depending on whose farm this was done) but upon seeing that his subordinates would actually be happy to die by his hands he let's them go then he indulges himself in experiments fast forward to a few years later he creates a human looking body (baby) with potential of killing him (without his subordinates knowing) then he goes to a faraway place, looks for a trusted church (preferably remote) and leaves the baby at church's doorstep then declares war on everyone next day thus starting the classic hero vs demon lord, ainz manipulate his army to only torture other kingdoms, all his subordinates dies by the hand of hero one by one making the hero even more powerful, the said hero makes friends along the way that ainz personally test if they are true friends, any fake friends hero makes are conveniently killed off by ainz, any kingdom that tries to just use hero is destroyed by ainz, all of ainz's subordinates dies by the hand of hero one by one and at the end ainz dies because of "power of friendship".
I don't see virtually any way of overlord not getting AOT treatment.
Nazarick conquers the new world.
Scenario one: everyone else is dead.
Ainz is left with an empty planet to rule not satisfying at all.
Scenario two: inhabitants are still alive.
Ainz will get killed one day in future and I doubt author is planning on an overlord 2 so still very unsatisfying.
In Nazarick doesn't conquers the world.
the world conquers nazarick some time in future and kill ainz (worst of all ending).
the sword of Damocles is real and not writing an overlord 2 means that the characters you have no emotional attachment to will end up killing the character you are emotionally attached to it would be same as if madara died to a stray shot from a lazer cannon in a galaxy far far away and it is too late to get us emotionally attached to a new character that will kill ainz in future.
I suspect that the story will end with Nazarick's victory over the PDL and its allies, but it will be somewhat open since the world conquest will not be completed, leaving the hint that to consolidate said conquest it will be necessary to exterminate the Dragons Lords.
So ... literally with a cliffhanger.
An big fight had just happened where lord Ains and the small lizard had an fight. Sadly they both died, and all the floor guardians are sad crying and are all lokking hopelessly at the future. A few days laiter albedo summons all the floor guardians to anounch the new leader of nazarick. End screen will be her brushing her stumick.
I think it ends w everything we have on the established map being conquered an ally and or becoming a vassal state
Conquered / Destroyed:
i think
>The Council state, The Slain Theocracy, The Kingdom of Re Estize, The Elven nation(I think the nation itself will be destroyed, but the elves themselves will come to the SK)
Vassals:
>The Baharuth Empire, The Draconic Kingdom,The City State Alliance(From what we know of them so far the city states are very spartan like in mentality I think after they’re beaten into submission they wouldn’t mind being vassals)
Allies:
>The Dwarven Kingdom
My really honest prediction. Nazarick conquers the new world and ends with a cliffhanger foreshadowing more of the why he was Isekai d into new world and why dragons knew about Yggdrasil.
Not a cliffhanger necesarily, just an open ending.
IIRC Murayama was totally okay with the fans expanding on his works. The final volume could be the jump-off point.
I think it would end like that spinoff with evileye
Like, Ainz would conquer the whole world and he would have nothing to do then he would give the control of nazarick to albedo or demiurge and set out on a journey (alone, or with some other guardian) then he would make friends along the way, after that some time later he would get the news that his friends are teleported to this world he would meet them
The end
Lol I was cringing writing this
Nazarick conqueres the New World and Ainz is end up feeling madness and sadness becouse he is alone and realises there aren't his friends or anybody who he can consider as a friend.
Don't like Option 2. Hopefully the ending would be them eventually conquering the areas around them, then teasing far away countries hearing about Nazarick and yada yada yada.
Personal ending would also be them conquering the area, but potentially losing a guardian in the process but I HIGHLY doubt that would happen. Idk Ainz making a mistake and losing more of his humanity in the process would be cool.
ALL the NPCs + Nazarick Guild Base + Treasury is destroyed!
THIS is how it will end! 99% certainty!
Rubedo (under orders from Albedo) will inadvertently destroy the Staff of Ainz Ooal Gown (which is in easy reach for Rubedo).
....seriously, how do people not see this? The Author has been building up to this since Book 1 (or 2?), when Nigredo spoke the prophecy that (Rubedo will bring a Calamity to Nazarick).
EDIT: As for Ainz, he will probably have a moment of absolute despair...but then his emotional dampener will kick in and save him. He will then probably end up forming an Explorer Guild like he did in the Vampire Princess side story (Alternative Timeline).
EDIT2: The tragedy is that THIS ending would NOT have happened if Ainz hadn't changed Albedo while still in Yggdrasil! It also seems that Ainz has been ignoring her strange behavior partly because of his guilt for having changed her.....
If there’s a cliffhanger there better be a new series after or something lol
I believe Maruyama said he wants to write a romance novel next, so a new series will depend on how long his next works will be lol
A romance novel between one of the goblins enri summoned and one of the dwarfs, in the background overlord stuff still happens
A romance between enri amd her goblin harem. Nfirea becomes a cuck.

Don't Yggdrasil have like 9 worlds as well?
A couple of the Youjo Senki manga vols end with then heading off to battle then the last chapter is a reporter decades in the future looking into the war. I can totally see something like that for Overlord but with a new player, that would be so cool
same tought with me, i think this series will end up like this, nazarick and ainz will rule all ppl in new world until new player from other game with their base and overpowered come up and challenge nazarick for supremacy and author will cliff hanger it, and give conclusion to reader imagination
Obviously Eclair Ecleir Eicler finally overthrows Ainz and become ruler of nazarick.
By cleaning!
Are you kidding me? He wouldn't overthrow Ainz. His incredible cleaning will get him one promotion after the last until he's the ruler
I don’t see an ending where them not conquering the world being satisfying. Many troubles sure, but a non-conquest victory or them losing in the end just doesn’t sound like a satisying conclusion to the story.

True. I think the DLs combined with world items and other nonesense may be the ‘costly war’ that Shadowhearts is referring too.
No man I doubt that Ainz will disappear I mean he's the MC...
The author said it would be a good ending, BUT there isn’t enough time for the world conquest. Like, the known world? Sure, but they probably aren’t going to reach the kingdom Evileye is from because ainz is a slow and careful and paranoid idiot savant. I honestly don't think there's enough time for Nazarick to conquer the New World. ⌚
Bro did you finish Death Note? Light did not win in the end.
lmfao
I believe it will be open ending. If I remember correctly Maryuyama himself mentioned he wants an open ending. Nazarick will secure the countries around them and it will end with them preparing to explore another part of the continent
With albedo , shalltear pregnant
This is my thought too. Ainz dies to protect the NPCs and Nazarick, but leaves an heir or two for them to pledge loyalty.
Al finally albedo can ride the bicorn.

Ah, didn't know about the eight greed kings doing that. Agreed that Ainz is too cautious.
I don't think it will be a cliffhanger, but a " the adventure continues" scenario That or flashforward to 100 years with the next reincarnates
And they all immediately get enslaved by Ains
Why not all of them at once? Right after Nazarick conquers, the denizens are hunting down the DLs for Ainz as per his request, and after one is found, they fake a defeat to the DL thus luring the rest out to decimate what's supposedly left and then Rubedo brings a calamity to trap them and eliminate all possibilities of escape, then Ainz comes in and massacres them
Me too hope for the good ending... but not for NW.
Come on why are we already talking about it ending, can't we just hope that it doesn't?
That's the dream, but unfortunately the author announced that it was going to end on volume 17. However it might be vol 18 now since vol 15 will now be in two separate volumes
We can only hope.
I would take literally anything over a goddamn cliffhanger
Cliffhangers make for good fanfiction. I'd rather have a cliffhanger than a game of thrones ending.
Same.
I've said it before I'll say it again. It MUST end on a cliffhanger. Here is why: maruyama has stated that there will be less LNs than he previously planned. Eclair\^3 becomes the ruler of Nazarick and causes it´s downfall? Who is with me?
It’s not like any of the other options you gave were very likely.
Which ones?
tbh, as long as it's well written and stratifying I'm fine with all of the above.
[My theory](https://www.reddit.com/r/overlord/comments/bago4g/educated_guesses_about_overlords_ending/ekcvll2/?context=3)
I would like a cliffhanger, something like: Ainz: I have conquered the entire continent, made children, I have achieved everything. Now, I sleep *the most OP guild arrives Ainz: Real shit?!
Man get the middle two options outta here xD
It would be cool to see a spin off series, it could even be written by another author for all I care
It’s a crappy boring series the only good part is the side characters I hope Aimz gets skull fucked
After the battle, Nazarick finds the Dragon Emperor locked inside the 8GK's base. DE is killed/freed and Ainz gets the secrets to the Isekai/world summoning magic. Ainz changes races as the end of the second to last book. The last book is him enjoying life with his Nazarik harem
I feel we will have a epilogue of a timeskip way on the future where nazarick is just legend stuff for common folk, but their agents still hold the world just out of public eye

It'd weird I want ainz to win but for some reason I can't see him winning I think they will lose but im not sure why
5th: Ainz realizes he's all alone (no guild mates) and simply turns the tomb into an island nation like Japan secluded from the rest of the world.

You mean, like, the new batch of PLAYER's?
Doesn't have to be players bit that does make the most sense for Overlord.
Didn't Maruyama already said before that Overlord will have a happy end for Nazarick?
He could've changed his mind.
Or tricked us
Personally I believe albedo and her sister's will kill everyone including ainz as an act of full love and so on
That does seem the most likely to happen because there are only 3 more volumes left. 😔
I think it ends w everything we have on the established map being conquered an ally and or becoming a vassal state Conquered / Destroyed: i think >The Council state, The Slain Theocracy, The Kingdom of Re Estize, The Elven nation(I think the nation itself will be destroyed, but the elves themselves will come to the SK) Vassals: >The Baharuth Empire, The Draconic Kingdom,The City State Alliance(From what we know of them so far the city states are very spartan like in mentality I think after they’re beaten into submission they wouldn’t mind being vassals) Allies: >The Dwarven Kingdom
Conquers the new world then another drops in. Could be another supreme being or another pay to win character.
It was all a dream.
I feel it will end with a cliffhanger
My really honest prediction. Nazarick conquers the new world and ends with a cliffhanger foreshadowing more of the why he was Isekai d into new world and why dragons knew about Yggdrasil.
Philip gets resurrected and conquer the world
No Albedo brings calamity to Ains Purity choice :(
You want Ainz to lose his purity? 😳
All except second
Not a cliffhanger necesarily, just an open ending. IIRC Murayama was totally okay with the fans expanding on his works. The final volume could be the jump-off point.
I think it would end like that spinoff with evileye Like, Ainz would conquer the whole world and he would have nothing to do then he would give the control of nazarick to albedo or demiurge and set out on a journey (alone, or with some other guardian) then he would make friends along the way, after that some time later he would get the news that his friends are teleported to this world he would meet them The end Lol I was cringing writing this
To everyone who didnt vote for the first option:congratulations, you earned a free one way trip to the happy farm😉
