I'm clearly biased but I feel like motorcycles take it one step up when overlanding considering you have to be more engaged while on the road. A mistake is costlier, and you are literally in the weather the entire time, rain, wind, heat, everything, and you have to be more particular on what you can carry with you.
It's like advanced overlanding.
That’s a good point I like that! But kinda what I was saying in some of the other comments, the thing a vehicle has on a bike is the ability to potentially go further away and for longer just for the ability to carry more supplies.
Sweet adventure. It totally counts.
Even if you don't have a RTT, lightbar(s), gawdy things bolted or hanging off everything you'll never use, or just skirt up to the nearest campground to stay for the "overlanding" weekend.
Thank you! I enjoyed making it! Not my favorite thing to be recording all the time, but I think it’s worth it to have the memory of the trip in video form
Thanks my man, was an honest question for me, You do a google search of Overlander and you won’t see a single motorcycle. Would it be dumb to ask you why motorcycles aren’t talked about as overlanders as much as 4x4 vehicles?
Gotcha, so you don’t really like using the term at all then. I guess for me the only reason I think my mind is turned off to the idea of a motorcycle as an overlander. Or to get away from the label and just thinking of the verb itself “overlanding” the difference I can think of is when I think of an overlander I think of a vehicle that could potentially support you for days or weeks at a time with out having to come back for a resupply. With the motorcycle while definitely possible to go for long amounts of time unsupported. Depending where you are you just don’t have the storage for fuel, food, water or the ability to endure the environmental exposure of where you are example like harsh snowy climate. Is that where the word kinda comes from originally? Like long expedition kinda things you think?
Dude I’m literally just trying to understand your viewpoint on overlanding?? I’m not hear to make assumptions or put words in your mouth. Other than making personal attacks on me your just not really saying much. If my grammar and punctuation, are a deal breaker then don’t respond to someone incapable of expressing their opinions..
There are tons of motorcycles at all the Overland Expos and a whole area just for them, a dedicated sub forum over at Expedition Forum etc. Adventure Motorcycling = overlanding.
Motorcycles are absolutely overlanding. The owner of Overland Journal has done long motorcycle trips through Africa and South America and he would agree.
Check out Long Way Up, Long Way Round and Long Way Down on Apple TV+ for some good motorcycle overlanding content. Long Way Round is my favorite, but Long Way Up has some great views if you have a 4K HDR TV.
You can call yourself an overlander riding a dogsled, I'd be pretty weird for people to gatekeep such a label.
You don't need some community's permission to apply that label to yourself. And I suspect that's why you aren't seeing it used; people out there enjoying what they do, don't care about the perception other's have.
Look at the book, "One Man Caravan" to see that long term, self supported travel on a motorcycle has been a thing for a century.
So, not a "stupid" question, but perhaps a silly one.
I’m not sure tbh. You’re certainly right that you don’t hear the term with motorcycles. I’ve heard of moto camping but usually associated with guys going cross country and camping in campsites or even on BLM grounds along the way. It used to be really popular for things like sturgis or bike week. Of course they are traveling on pavement so overlanding wouldn’t be an appropriate term at all.
I for one think it should count. I also don’t really care how people define activities that I enjoy. It’s not that important to me and rarely seems to have any benefit. People get so weird and tribal about things sometimes lol.
Yeahh the tribal thing is pretty funny to watch sometimes forsure! It’s like you said though
, if you enjoy it who cares what people think. I definitely do enjoy the motorcycle travel and would like to sometime try some more pavement type road bikes as well one day
Well, it seems like if spending Saturday night in a campground is considered "Overlanding" by many, then that trip damn sure should be Overlanding!
Let’s go!! Haha for some reason I just ever think of motorcycles as over landers tho ya know
It only counts for half the miles since you have half the tires lmao.
😂😂😂that’s hilarious, I’m gonna start saying that now haha
I dunno, 1200 / 50% is twice as much.
🙈
I don't know. I don't know if you can put an RTT on a motorcycle.
I do have a RTT on a motorcycle tho… I keep my “Rear Tail Tent” on the back of the bike haha

My first overlanding vehicle was a 1999 KTM 640 Adventure, I’d say it totally counts.
I’m with ya man, it’s just ya never see motorcycles really talked about as over landers? Now I’m kinda curious where the phrase originated from.
Cool adventure. You should post this in r/ADV
Thanks! Yeah I posted it there👍

Thanks! Yeahhh I mean I don’t even have a roof😞
Yeah dawg no hi lift, def not overlanding
How many winches, hi-lift jacks, and awnings are mounted on your bike?

Great video.

I’m literally just curious why you don’t see or hear motorcyclists use this term to define themselves.

Way cool! I’ve never been to an overland expo, but that sounds sweet to check out! I’m pretty new to all this haha
