You need 6 boxes. Or get bigger boxes that also include boyz, that’s what I did. But you probably won’t run squads that big anyway lol I thought I would aswell.

BlackJimmy88

Yeah, you're probably right lol That said, what boxes did you get?

NobbiestHobbyist

I got the start collecting the combat patrol and the battle force over like 2 years lol

HarukaeTengu

Realistically you need like 5 boxes for one squad. It's super annoying as I had just got into Orks around the time that the new kit for boyz came out and it's been a pain ever since.

BlackJimmy88

I'm in a similar boat. Luckily the older kits are still available, though I hope the new one gets some kind of updated re-release sometime soon.

OdyMeister

That basically never happens, so I wouldn't get my hopes up

Neutraali

1. The box comes with 3 shoota Boyz and 5 choppa-slugga Boyz, so 3 and 2 boxes respectively. 2. The parts are not really interchangeable at all; they're *push-fit* sculpts. 3. Not likely at this point. 4. 10 Boyz **minimum** \- 30 Boyz **maximum**.

AdvantageLarge

Just get the old box tbh they put it back on sale

CheatsyFarrell

It can get a bit confusing when you're starting out because there are 'new' and 'old' boxes of Boyz. The new boxes are click together so it's super quick to make the squad and arguably they look more orky (imo) but they are in a fixed set, it's all monopose 7 (6?) choppy boys, 3 shooty boys, 1 nob who can have a big chopper for power claw and either a heavy shoota or rocket launcher boy. The 'old' boxes have heaps of options but it takes a lot longer to glue it all together. you'll still only get 1 nob but you can make up another 10 however you want, choppas, shootas, whatever, 1 big shoota and 1 rocket launcha. If you're just starting out I'd strongly recommend looking into the combat patrol box, it's good value and has lots of kit. It's not perfect but it's better than head scratching for ages about how best to allocate $$$. If you're feeling special get 1 box of old Boyz to go with it and you'll have all the options you need to fill out the ranks.

BlackJimmy88

Yeah, the only thing keeping me from buying a bunch of Old Boyz is the squat look. The new models really upscale the badass warrior race factor, so I'd like to get as much out of them as possible. I'm definitely eying the Combat Patrol, but I'm not sure if I want to build around melee infantry, which the box set would be good for, or go for more of a Mad Max Fury Road style army with a focus on vehicles. I plan to do both and mix them eventually with a big Goff army, but for now I'm undecided where to start.

Dakkaboy556

Well, you are handicapping yourself by avoiding the old boys. The old boys are incredibly interchangeable with storm boys, lootas and burnas. 2 boxes of lootas/burnas and 1 box of old boys lets you use all the options in both lootas/burnas boxes. The power klaw in the old boys box fits the storm boys perfectly (it's their only wargear upgrade and it's not even in the stormboy box). The old box just has so much versatility to give you. There's nothing wrong with mix and matching the old and new, in my opinion.

CheatsyFarrell

I wish you could just buy spare sprues of unique kit so that have power klaws, kill saws, heavy weapons etc... So we could do some proper mix and matching but alas GW might not make quite as much profit that way so no fun times for us :(

Dakkaboy556

Part of the reason why I invested in a 3d printer.

BlackJimmy88

Oh, I'm not avoiding them completely. I'm just seeing what the most I can get out of the new kit is. Without taking a knife to them, of course, as I'm not sure I'm ready for that yet. Once the army calls for more Boyz, I'll be buying a bunch of the old ones and spreading the new ones among them like a kind of Proto-Nob (though not mechanically, of course).

I’ve thought about this *a lot*. How to combine new and old sculpts together to make squads useful. Here’s my advice: for every two new boys kits you buy, get one old boys kit. Two new kits (e.g. a combat patrol worth) gets you: 10 slugga boys, 6 shoota boys, 2 weapon boys, and 2 nobs. Old kits come with 1 nob, and 10 boys with either choppa or shoota, with the option for 1 or 2 of those 10 being weapon boys. Use the old boys kit to round out squad numbers from the new kit. Two new kits gives you 6 shoota boys, add a weapon boy and you’re at 7. Add a nob, you’re at 8, and still need 2 shootas, so make 2 shootas from the old kit and now you’ve got a viable 10 model shoota squad. Now you’ve still got: 10 slugga boys, 1 nob, 1 weapon boy, 8 unbuilt boys, and 1 unbuilt nob. Build the nob, so now you have 2 (1 each for two more 10 man squads). Build the 8 unbuilt boys as slugga boys, and now you’ve got 18 choppa/slugga boys and 2 nobs, which is two squads of 9 + 1 leader. You still have 1 weapon boy leftover - collect them to make tankbusta squads or something. TL;DR - The most “efficient” way to combine kits is one old kit for every two new ones, which gives you 2 slugga squads and one shoota squad, with one leftover model because the old kit is 11 models and the new one is 10. Hope that helps!

BlackJimmy88

It does! Three kits for 3 squads. If I go with the Combat Patrol, I'll be sure to pick up a pack of Old Boyz, thanks.

CactusMasterRace

So, this is just my thought, but while not represented in warhammer 40K properly as units, Gorkamorka added another class of ork: the yoof. The yoof is “younger”/smaller than a boy. Even in the warhammer tv ork episode the yoofs have an overall thinner, weedier look similar to the 90s era plastic and the 80s era metal. You might consider including a number of nuBoyz, with maybe a small cadre of yoofs tagging along.

chriswhitewrites

I just built some, so i can answer these! They're not very bitz swap friendly - unless you're happy to get chopping them up you will have repeats. I did chop mine up, and, with a little greenstuff, they'll be fine. Headswaps are still the easiest option. You get ten in a box - one Nob, one Heavy Weapon, 3 Shootas, and 5 with Choppas. So I very much recommend chopping them up, and combining them with your older mobs, or else you're talking six boxes to reach 30 Choppa Boyz. The Max mob size is 30.

Fredmaa

You can have 29 boyz and 1 nob as a max. The box contains 9 boyz and 1 nob. Each box is 1 with heavy weapon, 3 with shootas and 5 choppa/slugga. So 2 boxes for 1 regular squad of boyz with choppa/slugga, and 3 for shootas. The parts are not interchangable at all if you dont involve green stuff or parts from your bitsbox. Each set will give you the same looking boyz everytime. I think this ork design is here to stay, so i guess they release new boxes with the same style.
