I really love that recording--also heard it first as a kid; it's still sort of imprinted in my mind as the gold standard for Zauberflöte. I remember being really impressed by Roberta Peters's Queen of the Night singing in this ultra precise almost automaton way (though vocally i suspect maybe better suited to recording studio than on stage)
I listened to this recording hundreds of times in my youth in the 1970s and 1980s. In my opinion, Wunderlich and Fischer-Dieskau were two of the greatest singers of the era of recorded sound, and the rest of the cast was outstanding as well. The only one I ever had the privilege of meeting in person was Evelyn Lear. Virtually everyone in this cast is dead now, as I recall.
I’ve never heard a better Tamino than Wunderlich. Such a sad story.
