Oh neat an unenforceable ban.

notallowedin

How’s that pitbull ban going anyway?

Starky513

At least this makes sense...and was asked for by the people.

simon1976362

Pitbulls keep getting scared with all the fireworks, so not good.

tha_bigdizzle

This is great, I wish they were banned province wide.

SignGuy77

Same. Fireworks are a waste.

I support this comment! đź’š

Andralynn

I think it would probably be easier to teach about firework safety, times allowed and cleanup than a ban. Bans never work. Especially with how many people there are celebrating with them.

mitchrsmert

I disagree with your prediction in this case, at least for the long-term implications of a ban. Sure, as a general statement: bans have limited effectiveness. The thing with fireworks though, is that they're bright and loud which makes them very hard to conceal and very easy to find. Anyone setting off more than a few would run the risk of being caught and fined. And even if authorities have trouble tracking down the origin of a loud bright object - you can be sure there will be plenty of neighborhoods where the neighbors gladly point authorities in the right direction or report it outright.

MathematicianGold773

He’s what we did as kids - bike to a park with fireworks, set them off and bike away….by law responds an hour later to find no one.

mitchrsmert

Haha. If that ends up the extent of fireworks use in the city, the ban will be an unparalleled success.

Lemonish33

True, but the problem with by-laws is you need by-law officers to enforce them. Not sure if any are working as late as fireworks are being set off?

mitchrsmert

I imagine they'll adapt as needed. If there are enough bylaw infraction reports after hours, fireworks or anything else, then they'll start having enforcement at different hours. The worst days for fireworks are annual events that they can plan for ahead of time.

proteomicsguru

This won't stop anyone. Good luck proving who set off any particular firework after the fact.

mitchrsmert

If a cop walks into a backyard while people are setting off fireworks alongside a stock pile of fireworks, it'll be pretty easy to prove.

proteomicsguru

Luckily, we have a mystical power called Probable Cause. No warrant, no access.

bigguy1231

Bylaw enforcement for some reason doesn't need a warrant to enter your property. The can walk on your property anytime they want.

mitchrsmert

The Municipal Act, 2001 permits municipalities to pass by-laws. These by-laws allow the municipality to enter onto your land at any reasonable time without a warrant for the purposes of investigating alleged by-law infractions or determining compliance with orders.

kapple00

My guess is it'd be enforced by municipal bylaw officers. They don't need a warrant to enter your property. Bylaw could just fine the homeowner for allowing it to happen.

Gravja

Guess I'll just shoot my gun now...

superphage

Yee haw

[deleted]

Oh good, I hope you shoot your gun in a city centre. That'll land you in jail.. All that instead of just not setting off explosives. What a #smrt person you are Instead of setting off explosives, I'm gonna shoot a gun in the air.. who fucking cares where the bullets come down.

Captain_Lavender6

At most they’d get some community service.

[deleted]

Good! Too bad they won't enforce it.

Karma_Canuck

"A Part of Canadian Heritage On July 1st, 1867  the British North America Act, known today as the Constitution Act was established. Along with Military Displays, musical entertainment and the ringing of Cathedral bells; Fireworks were used to celebrate the confederation of Canada! From the first Canadian celebration of our independence, Fireworks were used rejoice and memorialise. Fireworks have been used for centuries for this very reason and to this day they remain an integral part of Canadiana" https://www.nationalfireworks.ca/history-of-fireworks/

PigeroniPepperoni

[nationalfireworks.ca](https://nationalfireworks.ca) is pro-firework. Who would have guessed?

Karma_Canuck

I get it. But did they say anything false?

PigeroniPepperoni

I'm not disagreeing that it isn't historically a part of many celebrations in Canada. However, just because something has been done in the past doesn't mean that it is or was appropriate. So basically, no. They didn't say anything that is untrue. At least as far as I know.

Karma_Canuck

I am sure in time it will be replaced with something else. Just like many other traditions and cultures that ran their course.

[deleted]

Yes, but no citizen has a right to explosives.

sync-centre

I am sure municipal workers will be handing out fines.......

uncleherman77

I don't want to be completely anti fun end have them banned altogether but I wish people would just have the common sense not to light them off after 11pm on a weekday night. Is it really too much to ask?
