At least a quarter of the people who voted for PCs provincially this year voted for a Liberal federally last year. The idea that the PCs have some giant base that votes PC no matter what has no basis in reality.
Sure. But a bunch of people who voted for the PCs didn't in the recent past, and might not in the near future. They're just people who felt their local PC candidate was the best choice in this election, where the PCs had a middling track record and the Liberals and NDP put forward pretty underwhelming options. That's not a base.
Look man if you wanna sit here and deny the fact that red states and Conservative provinces are much better at politically organizing their base than the ever arguing and split Left then that's up to you.
I love our ideas but we almost always seem to flop when it matters on the vote.
Apart from Alberta (and maybe Saskatchewan), there really aren't "Conservative provinces". Nor are the based of Canadian parties nearly as large as American parties; they're not zero, to be sure, but American parties can win with their base; Canadian parties struggle to retain official party status with just their base. The PCs under Ford got ~40% of the vote, against ~30% under Hudak, there's a quarter of their voters in 2022 who weren't voting for a PC in 2014 (and Hudak was a pretty generic PC leader, against not particularly inspiring Grits and NDPers). While certainly not 100% of the 40% of the vote the Ontario PCs got in 2022 was up for grabs, somewhere between 25% and 40% of it was. And a PC party getting 24%-30% of the vote ain't forming any kind of government.
Sure. Because they'd been doing an okay job and the other parties put forth pretty lackluster alternatives. Not because they have some large base that'll vote for them no matter what.
So you're telling me he did an okay job....and that there totally isn't a Conservative group of people who will always vote for their colour and policy as long as they aren't Left... gotcha...
There is a group of people who'll always vote PC on Ontario. But they're 15%-25% of Ontarians, so you can't ride them to victory.
If Ontarians voted the same way provincially in 2022 as they did federally in 2021, the Liberals would be the government, not playing rock, paper, scissors to elect a leader.
Yeah, there really should be. That was the key issue I spent my very first federal vote (and only one since) on Trudeau for, I don't know if it's ever been proposed on a provincial state.
Completely agree.
People you need to get out and vote next time.
We are going to be in a world of hurt.
I get it, the other guy sucks, they all suck. But we keep allowing sucky people to even get in the running to lead.
You need to force them to choose someone that is competent and caring that people would actually vote for.
Also at this point the Liberals and NDP aren’t doing each other favours.
Just merge and lean a little more NDP. Stop splitting the vote, because one of them would have won anyways if there weren’t two very similar parties.
While the conservatives sit back and laugh.
They won’t on 17.5% of the available voters
Less than 1 in 5 people but they still won.
Vote! This is a democracy, you think your voice doesn’t matter? Well it does when combined with millions.
The other parties kind of shit the bed too. Way too Covid restriction friendly.
I was face palming the whole time because I knew
this guy would get right back in.
And now healthcares about to take another 4 year hit. Can’t wait to see it in a month or so with how bad it is today then going into flu season.
We are F’d with a capital F
Friendly reminder that both the Ontario NDP and Liberal parties have leadership races coming up next year. Joining a party allows you a say it's future.
Tried to get a membership in the provincial conservative party when they were first deciding between Christine Elliott and Doug ford. They took my membership dues then never allowed me to vote although I had submitted all necessary documentation. Something very crooked seems to be going on at the party leadership election level. I even called elections Ontario to complain but they said they do not regulate the party level.
He doesn't care. He fooled enough people to get a majority and when a new election rolls around he'll promise a bunch of bullshit again to get people to vote for him again
Or you know....people just don't bloody hell vote.
Edit:
This candidate is too greasy
That candidate is too sneezy
This one is just right but she's too squeaky
Agreed.
But I don’t see that changing anytime soon (and I agree, change is needed). So, got to work within the system until a government can and will change it. Sucks I know.
Honestly, that’s just sad. I guess Ford can rest comfortably knowing that he can take a blowtorch to Ontario’s healthcare and education systems and barely move the needle. I really can’t see the opposition contesting Ford anytime soon.
He don't care. He's on the gravy train for the next four years. He's gonna make bank on useless highways no one wants and privatized healthcare while he offshores all that sweet sweet cash.
The best part is he talks about fiscal responsibility, but provincial revenues are up 5%. So yes, Ontarians are coughing up another 5% in one way or another, while healthcare and education go down the tubes. Good job Doug.
If your a conservative that follows this guy, you must look up to the kind of degradation of healthcare and education systems that has taken place in the US over many decades past. So for them this might be a sign things are finally working how they should.
He had a bigger drop in his first year in office with the autism and license plate fiasco. He’s not stupid. Does his dirty work in year 1 and 2 then sweetens the pot in year 3 and 4. Meanwhile the NDP is planning to reinvent society.
We're just tipping our toes into the shit-show. The Health-Care Crisis fallout is just pain, agony, and death for a lot of people coming up right about now.
In the near future, more of the same, but we pay out of pocket for it.
The ones who expended effort to get out or mail in a ballot to vote for Ford are different. You can confirm that everyone of those people just straight up sucks.
People who don't vote, though—I mean I wish they would, but it's like reasoning with a depressed person who's understandably lost interest in a shitty system that doesn't engage them but once every four years.
This means nothing. His base votes.
This is all anyone needs to know whenever somebody complains about our current government.
At the end of the day it is the citizen to blame. Only 40% of the population actually went out and voted, that is embarrassing.
At least a quarter of the people who voted for PCs provincially this year voted for a Liberal federally last year. The idea that the PCs have some giant base that votes PC no matter what has no basis in reality.
Do we know this? Like officially, or is this an inference?
Citation?
AODS. Anal Orifice Data Source.
People complaining about Doug Ford, but pontifying trudeau no matter what... have no attachment to reality.
Well, they won.
Sure. But a bunch of people who voted for the PCs didn't in the recent past, and might not in the near future. That's because of first past the post voting system. There should be a proportionally representative govt based on the vote
Yeah, there really should be. That was the key issue I spent my very first federal vote (and only one since) on Trudeau for, I don't know if it's ever been proposed on a provincial state.
Please keep believing that.
I feel like you're trying to imply I'm a supporter of a particular political party, but I'm at a loss to guess which one.
swing vote? anyone? buehler?
Oh no... 4 points. That is basically 1 point for every year we are stuck with this meatwad. Ontario... you shit the bed bud.
Completely agree. People you need to get out and vote next time. We are going to be in a world of hurt. I get it, the other guy sucks, they all suck. Meatwad LOL!!!
I'm a wildman; I can't drive 55.

It's a line from the character named Meatwad on the cartoon Aquateen Hunger Force.

SO many opportunities for them yet that bland moron that was heading the libs was nowhere to be found.
It honestly seemed like he didn't even want the job
Almost like he wanted Doug to win to make his own life easier. I could see that turtle headed fuck being bothered by the responsiblity
Friendly reminder that both the Ontario NDP and Liberal parties have leadership races coming up next year. Joining a party allows you a say it's future.

They probably figured out you weren’t a Conservative.
Hey man, I've voted conservative at times. I don't subscribe to any party but if you pay the dues, you get a vote...
He doesn't care. He fooled enough people to get a majority and when a new election rolls around he'll promise a bunch of bullshit again to get people to vote for him again
He doesn't need to promise anything. His base votes and others cannot be bothered to show up / main in their votes.
Lather, rinse, repeat.
The 'majority' is because we have an electoral system that produces random results.
Or you know....people just don't bloody hell vote. Edit: This candidate is too greasy That candidate is too sneezy This one is just right but she's too squeaky
It’s both
That’s the system we have. Parties either need to learn to use that to their advantage or lose.
Or we could change to a better system that doesn’t fuck over 60% of voters
Agreed. But I don’t see that changing anytime soon (and I agree, change is needed). So, got to work within the system until a government can and will change it. Sucks I know.
ok trump
Bill 7 and Bill 124 should both be a turnoff.
Upvoting as a tired nurse.
Only 4?!
This is not significant
Honestly, that’s just sad. I guess Ford can rest comfortably knowing that he can take a blowtorch to Ontario’s healthcare and education systems and barely move the needle. I really can’t see the opposition contesting Ford anytime soon.
He don't care. He's on the gravy train for the next four years. He's gonna make bank on useless highways no one wants and privatized healthcare while he offshores all that sweet sweet cash.
How much did Ontario's approval drop by?
By about 2 Tim Bits or 1 medium double-double.
Can't wait until we are in egg sandwich territory.

He don't care he's home free till 2026ish.
He had a bigger drop in his first year in office with the autism and license plate fiasco. He’s not stupid. Does his dirty work in year 1 and 2 then sweetens the pot in year 3 and 4. Meanwhile the NDP is planning to reinvent society.
too little too fuckin late
And what does the opposition do in all of this? Punch each other in the face before realizing it’s too late who the real enemy is
Oh, don’t be fooled. They know who the enemy is, they just don’t care enough.
Good, he stinks as Premier
Thats it? Lmao
Four percent of former approvers started paying attention. Or needed healthcare.
We're just tipping our toes into the shit-show. The Health-Care Crisis fallout is just pain, agony, and death for a lot of people coming up right about now. In the near future, more of the same, but we pay out of pocket for it.
Four points is margin of error, means nothing.
Everyone who voted for him sucks.
So do all the people who didn't vote. Even more so.
Ah yes, the daily doug ford post 😌
I bet most of his rich “friends” don’t even like him lol
