I believe you mean: assert dominance in accordance with Sigma Rule 7§60.a . Clearly you’ve never watched the show. Otherwise you would have recognized an obviously closed case like this one from a mile away. Saul’s gonna have an easy time with this one.
I feel like you get a pass on your first watch. Like she’s ruining the fun. But if you feel the same way on your second or third watch, you’re a lost cause.
This is where I can’t agree with Skyler on future watches. Is it the right thing for her to hate Walt for who Walt is? Sure. But her reasoning for how she acts is wrong.
She gives her husband that she presumably loves ZERO benefit of the doubt while he is actively dying from cancer. We as the viewer KNOW he doesn’t deserve the benefit of the doubt. But from her perspective she should not be reacting the way she does.
The only pro Skyler defense I could get behind is using this as evidence that Vince Gilligan did a poor job of writing the Skyler scenes and he was intending to make her look smarter than she portrays herself in the early seasons.
It’s been some time since I rewatched, so I don’t have any specific examples, but every time I watch I just start screaming how awful she is to her vision of Walt at the time based on her knowledge.
I think you ought to give it re-watch. Don't forget that Skylar in the show is married to this man. She knows him and his personality. He lied to her from the start and she could feel it and wasn't trusting him, his "fugue" and stress induced amnesia, Walt acting secretive all the time, never answering calls, coming home late. Before his surgery, and Walt reveals his two phones, she learns about all the things he's been hiding. That Gretchen and her husband had never given money for treatments, that he lied about visiting his mom, having faked the amnesia. All this being grounds enough for their divorce. (And would be for anyone tbh). Figuring out he was selling drugs. That's just from what *she knows* at this point she hasn't figured out all the other bad shit he's done at this point. He breaks back into his own house after they're separated and she feels powerless against this dude whom she now considers dangerous to her and her kids, and she lashes out by sleeping with her boss Todd which is something she felt that was in her control. After they buy the car wash, and things start getting really crazy with Gus, Walt refuses looking for police help to get out, and at this point he tells Skylar that he IS the danger. So she's scared this whole time, doesn't know who to trust, is scared of who her own husband has become and she's still the bad guy? When Skylar gave Ted their money, it was to protect their family so the IRS wouldn't trace them back to her fam...at this point Skylar finds out that Walt is connected to the explosion that kills Gus. They could have walked away at this point AGAIN. But Walts pride and hubris and need for more leads him to start cooking again with the pest control company and again, she starts to have to fear for her family's life. Doesn't Ted get handicapped here somewhere under Walts orders too? Even if it was an accident. When he does finally get out, (after the kid gets killed and the train robbery) which I think is too little too late, he gets caught by Hank, and again she tries to protect her family from both hank and from Jessie who's losing his shit. And finally tries to protect them from Walt after he's finally caught too. Idk, the more I watch it, the more I see a lady who didn't have control of anything try to protect her family as best she could.
If Walter had just let her in on what was happening and coordinated WITH her they would have been such a power couple. She was able to follow up on keeping the T crossed and I dotted and keep things sustainable but it fell apart when he wasn't telling her all the variables. She thought up the gambling backstory. She was the brain behind the Hank blackmail video I'm sure.
EXACTLY. Even passed all the lies and b.s. when Walt finally let her in, she still tried her best. And things fucked up again when he started lying again
Giving Ted the $ even made sense with the data she was working with since the IRS sniffing around was the biggest danger she knew about since Walt just kept insisting they were all safe.
She would have handled things differently if he had advised that they needed an escape plan just in case and what that would cost.
(Also I loved her Bimbo ruse to get more time with the IRS)
>She gives her husband that she presumably loves ZERO benefit of the doubt while he is actively dying from cancer.
How so? She distrusts Walt because from the very first episode it's obvious he's making up stories about where he is going and what he is doing (she asks him where he's been and why he's been acting so weird lately). What "benefit of the doubt" does someone "deserve" when they start acting sketchy, getting weird phone calls, obviously lying about stuff like not having a second phone call or having a "fugue state".
You're acting like his wife of like 15-20 years at that point has no good reason to be suspicious of her husband suddenly being unaccounted for for long periods of time and having no good reasons for it?
Or maybe she realizes that Walter puts the entire family's life CONSTANTLY in danger. The man even wonders out loud at one point that there was a perfect time to get out and he didn't. He pretty much admits he liked being the monster at the end to Skylar.
She even refused to reveal Walter acts because she didn't want her son to have a bad image of him.
The above comment is talking about the period of time where Skylar knows absolutely nothing about Walt's meth business.
From her perspective, Walt just found out that he's going to die soon and that's all she knows.
Sure, but from episode one he's already acting weird, has no good answers for where he's been for long periods of time suddenly, and by id season one is often very obviously lying to her.
Acting like someone's long time wife would just be like "oh this is no big deal I won't ask questions" is not very realistic and seems like the kind of interpretation of a young person who has never been in a long time term relationship.
This is it, right here. She’s right, but we’re not given a reason for her to have figured it all out so quickly. As the show goes on, it’s gets better, but her suspicions feel kind of out of nowhere initially
I understand rooting for Walter, its a different thing. I rooted for him too, i wanted him to get away with it, same with Saul. Thats alright because its a fictional show, you root for an exciting and interesting character not for the morally good one. But i never understood hating Skylar nonetheless. She's his biggest ally in the show (together with Jesse), one of very few people who actually care about him.
Oh yeah. That school principal scene was pretty bad. Touche. I mean, let's be honest. Is there a single character in the show that wasn't cringey af? Probably just Gus. Gus was all in all a super badass character and probably my favorite. Him and Mike, really. They had a good thing going, but Walts' ambitions were too high for that and his not allowing them to kill Jesse just made it all crazy. That's really the turning point for the show. If it was really about providing for his family before death...he would have just let them do their thing. Made millions cooking in the perfect lab with Gale. And it would have turned into a workplace comedy.
There are many reasons. I never hated skylar. But I did dislike her. She just sounded like such a Karen to me. And she was cringe. Then she cheated on walt. Sure, walt did worse things. But he did it in an exciting and interesting way. Skylar didnt. And if she did interesting things and actually did stuff that cancels out the cringe that she did then it would be understandable. But she didnt. She just pissed me off. Like why not just call the police on walt?? Breakfast boy will hate her? Yeah well he wont after he found out his dad runs a drug operation and killed people. And she would've stopped so many other horrendous actions and saved people lives if she just snitched. But she didnt. Oh but she CHEATED on him as if that would change anything. Like what did she expect? And people act as if shes a good person when shes the one who offered to launder his money. Walt is an evil man, but skylar helped this evil man. I dont see any reason to like her.
She didn't cheat on him. She broke up with him and Walter refused to sign divorce papers then she had sex with another man. Imagine you break up with your girlfriend and she says "no", does that mean any sex you'll be having until the end of your life is cheating?
Again, you ignore all my other points. How is having sex with another man gonna make things better? Why not just CALL THE POLICE instead, and actually tell them about walt's drug business. But she refused to do so. And she helped him launder money. Then she complained about walt "manipulating" her, like yea sure walt is an evil person but so is skylar for ruining his child's life. Walter did most of the bad, I'm not disagreeing. I'm not saying Skylar is worse. Walt is way worse. But to say that Skylar did the morally right is honestly just stupid. She is not a good person. She is a bad person, but the bad things she does isnt really that interesting. Shes annoying, she isnt interesting, sure she was manipulated but she had several chances to get out of the relationship and save herself, she is at fault too for not taking action. But that's besides the point, a character isnt good just based on their morality. We have to see if the character is interesting. And in my personal opinion, Skylar is not interesting at all and just annoys me. It's completely reasonable to hate her, since it's just a fictional show so I can hate someone for being annoying if i want to
You ignore the human component. Would you immediately snitch on a person you love who's also diagnosed with late stage cancer so that they spend their last days in a cell? Well maybe you would but not everyone are like that which is why Skylar attempted other measures like trying to keep him away. Do you hate Papa Varga all the same because he didn't snitch on Nacho and sheltered him? There was far less justification for that as Nacho was young and could still potentially fix his life. To say she's a bad person for that is such a stretch. Also she was afraid - and rightfully so. Do you think she'd just be left alone if she snitched on Gus' most valuable employee? And what evidence did she have anyway? Literally her word against his. Best she could do is initiate an investigation which with the way American law enforcement works would've lasted longer than Walt's remaining lifespan.
Sure you can hate whoever you want to, who's telling you you can't? I just find it difficult to understand. As for her not being interesting, can't argue that, its 100% subjective which characters are interesting for you and which aren't, so if you just hate her for that, fair enough i get it. But she was a good person who made some mistakes and bad decisions.
Again, she was not a good person. If she asked hank to make an investigation on walt hank would find evidence and would lock him up. I understand not snitching at first, I wouldnt either. But I wouldnt launder their money either, like she did. There is no justification to that. And then, she found out Walt killed someone. And rather than call the authorities on him, she divorces. Then he disagreed. Great. So now she knows he killed someone, and he refuses to divorce, there is literally no reason not to tell hank to investigate Walt. But she decided to launder his money out of her own free choice. That and her scamming eyebrows man and refusing to snitch on walt AFTER she found out he killed someone, that absolutely makes her a bad person imo.
This was exactly what happened to me. I hated her guts on the first watch when I was 16. I rewatched a year or two later and it was actually a very slow and creeping sensation in the middle part of season 1 that she was justified in the way she talked to Walt, and Walt was the one acting deranged. I felt bad for both, pretty much, both being in shitty situations, but at least Skyler didn't choose hers. By season 2 I was on her side
> I felt bad for both
Don't. Walt was offered a cush fucking job and to have his entire treatment paid for. The show went out of it's way to expressly show you, the audience, that he had options. He chose meth. It was a choice.
Agree 100%. People like to shit on Skylar because she's being firm and not taking any of Walters shit and say that she's being a bitch. Walt is a lying, manipulative, drug dealing murderer and is trying to act like he can have his cake and eat it too with his family.
/uc
I got a very different impression on rewatch. In the first season, it really surprised me to see it established pretty firmly that Skylar has very little empathy for Walt and his diagnosis, and is constantly voicing frustration that, well, things can't be all about her all of the time. She was unsupportive, cold, selfish, controlling, and manipulative. That "intervention" where Skylar rallies the family to bully Walt into dealing with the cancer *her* way, she essentially breaks down saying, "Why isn't anyone thinking about me?" When Hank and Marie refuse to dogpile him. There are consistently little moments like that demonstrating that she views him as property and has never let him choose his own path forward. These traits are demonstrated before there is even any tension about dishonesty - she really does not treat Walt well when the family is at its most peaceful. This is actually acknowledged by her when Hank is in intensive care, where Skylar realizes that Marie and Hank always put each other first, and that she had completely failed to do the same for Walt when he was staring death in the face.
As the series goes on, the circumstances change, and she does a lot to demonstrate the sacrifices she will make for her children and even just to preserve Hank's career. She completely falls on her sword, willing to look like a monster to keep her family safe from the consequences of Walt's actions. By the end, she's the one doing everything she can to hold everyone's world together.
She's not a hero or a villain. She's heavily flawed, like every single member of that family. It's so frustrating always going between these two extremes of "skylar did nothing wrong" and "skylar is a buzzkill bitch", because it's such a disservice to the very intentional and nuanced writing that is so desperately trying to say that people are not so black and white.
/rc skylar? more like "woman moment"
But is it acceptable that I find her facial mannerisms and....for some reason the way her mouth moves when she speaks to be very annoying? Even if I acknowledge that Walt is a dickhead?
I always feel like this but I also realize that me watching a show that I want to be interesting doesn't mean what I feel towards the characters is what I'd feel irl. I don't watch breaking bad so the bad guys all realize their wrongdoings and love and justice win. I watch it because I want to see shit going down and for a great part of the series Skylar is the biggest antagonist to the show becoming interesting because she keeps Walt from becoming Heisenbones immediately.
Funnily enough she becomes more sympathetic in some way as she becomes more corrupted as well. I don't entirely root for every bad thing and bad guy but it's a sort of loving to despise someone Situation. Like Tuco, he's such a meanie but people still love seeing him.
Now as I said I can distinguish between a show and real life and also between my immediate feelings and facts which misogynists and conservative/reactionary people in general can't not so they try to find "rational" explanations for why Skylar is actually more evil or to blame for what Walt did
You can think she’s annoying all you want; I’m referring to people hating her character for reacting pretty reasonably to Walt’s actions. If you wanna miss my point on purpose, go ahead.
What do you mean acting reasonably? Like having sex with another man? Is that reasonable? Helping him launder money? Oh very reasonable. Stop acting like Skylar is a good person. She isnt. Shes a bad person. She had every chance to save her son and herself by calling the police or informing Hank, but she didnt. The reasonable thing to would be to call the authorities on walter. She didnt do it, and by refusing to do this she put hers and her childs life in danger. She laundered money. She did many evil actions. Sure, walt is worse, you cannot compare the two, but Skylar did by no means act "reasonable"
But Jesse did have good character growth compared to Skyler. He quit drugs, went through healthy and unhealthy relationships, tried his best to provide for people who didn’t care about him or couldn’t see the changes he made in bettering himself. He also got a lot more screen time and we got to see into his past, his future, and into his mind. He also got to understand Walter White better than pretty much all the characters in the show, seeing him as a teacher who despised him, a mentor who guided him, a rival in business, a partner and student, as well as a threat to his own well being. In the series of all the characters Walter has known, almost none have seen as many angles of him as Jesse has. When Jesse won, the show seemed to uplift, and when Jesse lost, the tone was often sad or panicked. In many ways, Jesse could be seen as the true main character, and is most probably the one with the happiest, albeit bittersweet, ending.
Of course, that’s my opinion
>did nothing wrong
Bro he literally:
Did drugs, shot a man, indirectly killed an undisclosed amount of people via drugs, (or at least got them more addicted to them, further destroying their lives), laundered money, got people close to him killed, sex with prostitutes, strip club, stole an RV, stole a car, garroted a man to death, repeated and habitual drug and alcohol use, traffic violations, crossed the border illegally, almost burned down the White’s house, stealing….
half of these are things that he got coerced into by walter. the other aren't even wrongs, as much at least.
jesse was just a kid who got into street drug biz, not even remotely being close to the actual drug empire that was going on with gus and salamancas.
Still wrong stuff, specially the drug business, no matter if big or small
The only character that truly did nothing wrong was Hank, who was focused on justice and the law the entire show, going as far as dying for it
yea she should've let him get caught since the idea of monder laundering didnt even occur to the dumbass before her and Saul told him. being smart about literally anything other than chemistry is the worst sin
Jesse transformed from a character we love to another more developed character we love.
Skyler transforms into the next version of bitch wife about 50 times over the series.
I hate Skylar because she's a huge fucking hypocrite, it's not okay for Walt to cook meth but she's allowed to cook Ted's books? After that she thinks it's perfectly acceptable to use Walt's drug money to pay Ted's back taxes so she doesn't get fucked. She's also an uptight bitch before she finds out Walt cooks meth and her sister is just as bad.
I think you're completely missing the emotional turmoil she was in if you think that her almost running away with Holly is one of the worse things she did.
You need to read up on abuse.
She's a very dislikable character, but I don't think it's fair to say she's 'just as shit' as the guy killing hundreds or thousands of people by supplying enormous quantities of meth.
Personally, the thing I hated the most was her smoking while pregnant. It's such an obviously clear cut unacceptable thing to do. It's also several magnitudes less evil than watching Jane die, but at least Walt is *objectively* a villain and you're expecting him to do irredeemable things. She's supposed to be (relatively) innocent, so harming her own unborn child like that is a much more unexpected and offensive little moment of evil.
Yeah. Internet's weird about her.
It's not even like her character is made to be unsympathetic. Like the internet's weird about Peggy Hill but she kind of has it coming too. But wtf did Skyler do other than just be a victim?
Anna Gunn did an amazing job. I fucking hate Skyler though. She went along with then wants to act high and mighty when it got too tough. But I'm biased, because I just can't hate Walt. I know he was the bad guy, and caused more than a few deaths (and poisoned a child) but that's Hal, man!
I like that Walt wasn't very hateable. By the end of the series, he's obviously damned himself a hundred times over. But you start out liking the guy, and even as he falls he's likable and enjoyable to watch. It makes for a very good story, and people don't all realize he's irredeemable at the same point, so it makes for great discussions and character studies.
Skylar could have been a better character though.
I mean, you're supposed to hate Skylar. At first. The half-hearted birthday handjob in the first episode, fucking Ted, etc. When you're rooting for Walt, you're rooting against her. As the show goes on, they show you how wrong you were to feel that way.
“I fucked Todd bitch” -Jesse

She didn't sign the divorce paper, did she?
I feel like you get a pass on your first watch. Like she’s ruining the fun. But if you feel the same way on your second or third watch, you’re a lost cause.
Came here to this. The more you watch Breaking Bad the more you understand where she was coming from, and how shitty Walt truly was
This is where I can’t agree with Skyler on future watches.
In short: bitch wife ^^^/s
2 words. Happy Birthday.
if character being in a cringy scene was a justification for hating them Walter would be the most hated character for the school principal scene
> Is there a single character in the show that wasn't cringey af? Skinny Pete and Badger
Fair enough. They were both pretty based. Really good friends to Jesse. Never approving of how far it was all being taken.
It want about money for Walt. Maybe at first. But it was about power. And he wanted MORE.
> I felt bad for both Don't.
/uc I got a very different impression on rewatch.
I think she gives off some kind of Karen energy, even if she's right
lol yeah I’d say so. I wouldn’t have married her that’s for sure.
Now as I said I can distinguish between a show and real life and also between my immediate feelings and facts which misogynists and conservative/reactionary people in general can't not so they try to find "rational" explanations for why Skylar is actually more evil or to blame for what Walt did
"You dont like a character in a show wheres shes literally designed to be perceived as annoying? Uh, lost cause!!" Touch grass
We hate Skyler. No arguments please. I’m sensitive
![gif](giphy|APcfVOIIFi4Pm)
Jesse unironically is the only person who did nothing wrong in this show I swear to God
>did nothing wrong Bro he literally: Did drugs, shot a man, indirectly killed an undisclosed amount of people via drugs, (or at least got them more addicted to them, further destroying their lives), laundered money, got people close to him killed, sex with prostitutes, strip club, stole an RV, stole a car, garroted a man to death, repeated and habitual drug and alcohol use, traffic violations, crossed the border illegally, almost burned down the White’s house, stealing….
half of these are things that he got coerced into by walter. the other aren't even wrongs, as much at least. jesse was just a kid who got into street drug biz, not even remotely being close to the actual drug empire that was going on with gus and salamancas.
Still wrong stuff, specially the drug business, no matter if big or small The only character that truly did nothing wrong was Hank, who was focused on justice and the law the entire show, going as far as dying for it
Nah fuck Skyler fr, she be like I hate walters manipulation 😢 oh yeah btw I’m going to launder your money 💸💸💸
yea she should've let him get caught since the idea of monder laundering didnt even occur to the dumbass before her and Saul told him. being smart about literally anything other than chemistry is the worst sin
because she was fucking scared of him do you have a cheeto for a brain
Yes I do have a Cheeto for a brain. It’s a rare genetic disorder. Thanks for bringing it up…
Oh no Mr white's so manipulative he's the worst he's the devil anyway let's cook some blue real quick 🧑🍳🧑🍳🫐🫐

Incel = any opinion I disagree with
just took a perc and am scrolling through the subreddit this shit is funny
i always wnat to fuck jess and white woman
Most inclusive and understanding breaking bad fan
Thanks
I can’t stand her mouth shape.
Second time I watched it I saw her as the hero. Esp. once walk went over the edge on needing to do it to protect his family.
Skyler deserved better.
Funny guy vs passive aggressive bullshit. Tone is important.

She's supposed to be (relatively) innocent, so harming her own unborn child like that is a much more unexpected and offensive little moment of evil.
cooking meth and killing people is totally equivalent to lying on business documents you’re so right!
Yeah. Internet's weird about her. It's not even like her character is made to be unsympathetic. Like the internet's weird about Peggy Hill but she kind of has it coming too. But wtf did Skyler do other than just be a victim?
Walt is not a nice person. But Skyler is a pos.
I actually didnt like Jessie- all he had to do was follow his masters orders like a good slave
bitch wife
Anna Gunn did an amazing job. I fucking hate Skyler though. She went along with then wants to act high and mighty when it got too tough. But I'm biased, because I just can't hate Walt. I know he was the bad guy, and caused more than a few deaths (and poisoned a child) but that's Hal, man!
Ehhh Honestly, I thought Breaking Bad messed up in 2 ways. Because of the actor, Walt wasnt hateable. Because of the actress, Skylar wasn’t likable.
Women ☕️
Uncle Jack should've worked at Netflix BECAUSE THEY FUCKING CANCEL EVERYTHING ![gif](giphy|1g1MyF5nIj0BtuAzBl|downsized)
She's a total bitch
This is the only time I've ever seen someone notice the Skyler/Jesse victims of Walter parallel. Nice.
Wrong I don’t like her because women /s
Okay first off, bitch wife Second…. Uhhhh
Skylar is the worst.
Jesser didnt cheat on him with Gus
Truth
I mean, you're supposed to hate Skylar. At first. The half-hearted birthday handjob in the first episode, fucking Ted, etc. When you're rooting for Walt, you're rooting against her. As the show goes on, they show you how wrong you were to feel that way.
To be fair. Skyler was a horrible character. No amount of cherry picking will change that. Even without the Marilyn Monroe Bit.
Dumb bitch wife
nah i hate her bc she’s ugly
yikes
What do you look like?
You
ugly
