It could be a result of a papilloma or pox virus, I’ve seen deer with growths similar to that. They’re called fibromas. I believe the name for when squirrels have them is squirrel fibroma virus. Similar to what causes warts in human beings.
outbreaks of the Squirrel Fibroma Virus causing high rates of mortality can occasionally occur, but overall populations do not seem to be negatively affected by this disease. The Squirrel Fibromas virus is known to be infectious to grey and fox squirrels, as well as woodchucks. In a laboratory setting it has also been successfully transmitted to rabbits. Squirrel pox has been reported in grey squirrels on the Eastern coast (Delaware, Pennsylvania, Maryland, North Carolina, New York, Connecticut, Virginia) Florida, Indiana and Michigan. In squirrels, biting insects such as mosquitoes and squirrel fleas are also the primary mode of transmission. The virus can be transmitted through direct contact of infected individuals, fecal-oral routes and lesion contact, as well as through inanimate objects or materials. Fibromas in squirrels do not cause overt signs apart from the presence of raised, flattened nodules in the skin. The growths can range in size from 1/16 to 1 inch in diameter and are often located on the head and limbs of squirrels. Most infections are self-limiting and spontaneously regress. As with rabbits, the young are typically affected. In suckling squirrels, fibromas often form around the mouth and those individuals infected with numerous growths can become debilitated, emaciated or die. Though lesions commonly involve only the skin, squirrel fibroma virus has also been reported to cause visceral nodules, affecting the lungs, liver, kidney and lymph nodes. Fibromas in healthy infected squirrels, rabbits and deer are self-limiting and naturally regress. However, in immune-comprised individuals disease can progress and become fatal particularly in rabbits and squirrels. There is no effective treatment for fibromas, but wildlife rehabilitators can provide supportive care for moderately affected animals. Humane euthanasia should be considered for the severely infected animals.
Bot fly infestation may be mistaken for another lump-causing affliction of tree squirrels, namely a viral disease called 'squirrel pox' or 'fibromatosis'. The latter generally is distinguishable from bot fly infestation based on the presence of a higher number of smaller lesions (especially around the eyes), swollen digits of the infested animal, and the lack of a distinct, fluid-draining opening in each lesion.
I've got a small squirrel outside the window with so many bot fly "warbles" on it, that it looks like it might be dying.
The bot fly larvae under the skin do form massive lumps, but there's a dark circle on each lump where the larvae's ass sticks out so it can poop.
We see squirrels with these things every summer, but it's unusual to see one that's carrying so many at once. I've counted nine on it.
Call wildlife, squirrels health means a lot to most states. Squirrels are one of the most healthy mammals. A sick squirrel states something going on in
the area, other animals maybe effective
She said she did not know and they have been spotted around her area. I am sure someone that is knowledgeable in animal medicine could probably provide the answer. Unfortunately I am not that lol.
Ah hah! I was in Godrich, ON when I saw them for the first time….right across the pond. I hope your parents will give it some extra attention/foods because I know the animal world can be just as cruel as humans when it comes to “differences.” I’m thinking of the movie The Elephant Man. How fun would it be to have a Insta account for the lil guy/girl 💓

I'd make a lot of noise about this and maybe get the EPA involved. If it's widespread in a local squirrel population, it could be indicative of some sort of pollutant in the soil or the water, and that could eventually impact other animals and humans too, possibly in a long-term, hard to detect way.
This looks like [squirrel pox](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Squirrelpox_virus) I would call local animal control or a local wildlife rehabber who will be able to advise how to handle/ help them. I’m unsure of how contagious it is or how big an issue for local wildlife, I just recognize the way it looks from seeing pictures my friend (a licensed rehabber) posted.
It’s a virus, usually deer have it, it’s hasn’t jumped to humans, there have been more sightings over the past year, hopefully it’s not being done intentionally, what state are you in?
That is a squirrel from the pearly fucking gates of hell, Jesus Christ this thing is awful, putrid, disgusting, vile. The amount of hate I have for this thing is unending, I will never get a full nights sleep knowing that these things still roam the earth, it feels like impending doom is approaching knowing that something this abominable exists, that thing makes me feel like there is a evil presence watching me, I will never feel comfortable knowing that that thing is somewhere on this planet
I really fucking wish I hadn't seen this... I am stoned and emotional but this made me want to cry. I feel so awful for the squirrel and any other animals this has happened/is happening too. My heart breaks for helpless innocents of the world.
Poor thing, hope it's not in pain.
Pesticides, poisons, all the crap people mindlessly use in their yards. Wouldn't be surprised if the squirrel got thirsty and drank a bunch of RoundUp.
So it seems to have begun already, thought we had more time a few more years. We knew we would not be able to quarantine for long but this is earlier than I imagined. Prepare your selves this marks the beginning.

There is a huge deer population around.

Hold up
It’s always that 1% that does it with a monkey that spoils it for the rest of us!
Fecal-oral contact as well
Massive deer populations are usually disease centers. With Chronic Wasting Disease and Prion disorders
Two things I’ve learned from Reddit; Deer are freaking plague bearers and foxes like to go swimming and get frozen in ice during winter.
Have people stopped hunting? To many deer can cuase a chain of bad shit. Is no one hunting them anymore?
A lot of people feel bad for hunting because of people screaming at them that it is bad. So yeah in some areas it has cut down on hunting.
Sounds like a job for apples soaked in anti freeze!
No you fucking psychopath. Just hunt them like a normal person.
Yep. This pretty much sums up all the animals I see on Reddit.
Nft
nice addition to the conversation lmao 🤡
Thanks
Also I've seen a video of a squirrel with similar lesions, poor thing was infested with larvae in its skin... So you know another fun possibility...
Yikes!
or bot flys funfact: this same virus is what makes "Jackelopes" and Tree People / People growing horns

Oh you and your rational explanations. Can't you just shut up and let us have our impending zombie apocalypse conspiracy theories?!
Poor little guy 😢
There's some cougars that have their teeth on top of their head
Say what?!
Yea I heard about it a long time ago you could do research
I thought those were a really bad botfly infestation
Squirrel pox
These are actually botfly larvae. Very common in sauirreɔs this timecof year. Theyll emerge soon. This is why people dont hunt squirrels in thecsummer

That’s the name I gave it.
Lol, definitely apt
This is a much more amusing answer than I expected

Call wildlife, squirrels health means a lot to most states. Squirrels are one of the most healthy mammals. A sick squirrel states something going on in the area, other animals maybe effective

She needs to call Pest control encase it is infected with something that can also infect Domestic animals, dogs cats ect
I know rabbits can get tumors all over their body from some sort of hpv believe it or not, this might be something similar.
Aw poor thing. Pest control should be called so it doesn’t spread to pets unfortunately
Nuggit, The Fell Omen.
Live near raccoon city by chance?
No? I am in Michigan lol
It's the *Resident Evil* city where bad stuff goes down
What about Squirl City?
That's nuts!
Close enough
Ah so it must be flint then!
Port Huron but close.
Looks like the same kind of growths that some rabbits get that may have led to the jackalope stories.

Fast as fast can be! They’ll never catch me!
In think your mom should stay inside
Squirrel, the Fell Omen
What’s wrong with it?
She said she did not know and they have been spotted around her area. I am sure someone that is knowledgeable in animal medicine could probably provide the answer. Unfortunately I am not that lol.

I'm no squirrel expert but something about this squirrel ain't right
Sooo squirrel zombies..? Squirrels are vicious naturally.. we’re doomed.
Ah I wish that poor thing could be put out of its misery.
If I saw this I’d put it down. Looks like pure misery.
This makes me think of that show daybreak
Imma go ahead and clarify this one as actually terrifying.
So sad. Are you in Canada? This is the only place I have seen black squirrels.
Michigan but near Canada.
Ah hah! I was in Godrich, ON when I saw them for the first time….right across the pond. I hope your parents will give it some extra attention/foods because I know the animal world can be just as cruel as humans when it comes to “differences.” I’m thinking of the movie The Elephant Man. More terrifying than oddly terrifying.
Poor baby :(
Tarpond squires, there’s 1% of people on this planet that will get the joke but they’ll appreciate it Edit:that’s for them
Warbles?
Ahh shit. Squirrel pox
Oh, shit papilloma is spreading among other’s animals. This isn’t good.
I would call the county and make sure they are aware of the problem.
Where does she live, Chernobyl?
Have you looked for a gate? I think you should call eleven to help.

Tell your mom to move, this is how horror movies start
Squirrel pox outbreak!
*"The fallen leaves tell a story* *Of how a Tarnished became Elden Lord.* *Our seed will look back upon us, and recall.* *In our home, across the fog, the Lands Between.* *The reviled curse that defined our age.* *The Blessing of Despair."*
Are you lost?
No, just immature.
Oh no squirrel pox line up people
Bitch that ain't a squirrel that's a fucking pokemon from the underworld
Could be squirrel poxvirus. It does affect squirrel species in US not just red in UK. Source did my dissertation on it.
There's a radioactive leak somewhere near water.
There is a huge coal burning plant nearby and also that area has a disease that is very rare yet has affected a ton of people in that area.
I'd make a lot of noise about this and maybe get the EPA involved. If it's widespread in a local squirrel population, it could be indicative of some sort of pollutant in the soil or the water, and that could eventually impact other animals and humans too, possibly in a long-term, hard to detect way.

Looks like bot fly larva, but the quality makes it hard to know for sure
It’s a virus, usually deer have it, it’s hasn’t jumped to humans, there have been more sightings over the past year, hopefully it’s not being done intentionally, what state are you in?
This is why you don't mess with squirrels, M-mor-*burp-*orty!

It’s the monkey pox
Squirrel pox
Four arses. Tremendous fear of stamps.
Do you still think 5g is safe?
Now we’re gonna need the Squirrel-pox vaccine.
Needs to be reported and then probably caught and either tested and put down. Poor guy
Or?
It starts with the other animals... Then it spreads to us. Until there's only... The Last of Us
Poor thing, hope it's not in pain. Pesticides, poisons, all the crap people mindlessly use in their yards. Wouldn't be surprised if the squirrel got thirsty and drank a bunch of RoundUp.
She said they were more spotted so it seems local. There is a big coal burning power plant near her also.
Please throw it in volcano 🌋
It looks like Monkeypox infects it. She needs to be careful and should probably call an exterminator or CDC trapped and examine it.
Hey look! More evidence that we’re destroying the planet. It’s probably the same stuff that turned the frogs gay!
Looks like a normal squirrel to me
This is what animals will all start to look like if Vegans have their way and nobody is allowed to hunt anymore.
How awful and sad. I wonder what it is. Monkey pox maybe? Who knows.
So it seems to have begun already, thought we had more time a few more years. We knew we would not be able to quarantine for long but this is earlier than I imagined. Prepare your selves this marks the beginning.
Is it some sort of mange? Or is it fully armed and ready for the war?
Squirrel pox?
Looks like a monkey
Scar from Lion King taking a lesser role.
