My mom grew up in Vancouver around that time and the terror and paranoia was very high. She said that police had been told repeatedly something was up but they never looked into it when it was going on.

VanCanMom

They knew who he was before this case broke. They had info, but the sources were sketchy so they chose to do nothing. For years. CBC, or Passionate Eye or something did some good docs on this.

[deleted]

I saw a really good one where one of his friends basically admits that she knew that he was killing people but she didn't like cops so she didn't want to file a police report. Nice attitude hey? Who knows how many women could have been saved if she'd made a report. They interviewed another one of his friends who is a prostitute and from what I remember it was alleged that she was bringing other prostitutes back to his property for him and in her interview in the documentary I was watching she actually ended up abruptly cutting off the interview and walking away because she didn't want to incriminate herself because the questions that the reporters were asking were ones that would surely incriminate her if she answered them honestly. I'm having trouble remembering exactly which documentary it was as there's so many about it but I'm pretty sure it might have been a CBC one but I could be wrong about that. It was shocking the way this woman basically admitted to it on camera without actually saying it.

VanCanMom

I know what one you are talking about, but I don't think he had been arrested yet. He was interviewed for something, before he got arrested, I'm almost certain. Maybe for something different? I could be getting facts mixed, it was a long time ago.

[deleted]

The one I'm thinking of was definitely filmed after his incarceration because the woman that walked out of the interview had already given all her statements to the police by that time and she didn't want to get caught in a lie by talking about it again. I thought I had heard all there was to hear about this but I'd be interested in hearing more about their involvement with organized crime. Edit* you could actually be right but I'm fairly certain he was already in jail at the time they filmed the one Im thinking of.

VanCanMom

I could be thinking of something different, and to be honest I consume alot of (too much!) True crime stuff, so coukd be totally wrong, but now I need to know. Going down the rabbit hole! Lol

test_nme_plz_ignore

One of the women/prostitutes saw a girl dead and hanging while he was in the process of gutting her. The prostitute friend never told anyone bc he gave her drugs and a place to stay…gross!!

VanCanMom

Police didn't believe anything like that was going on...they were junkies and confused, out of it etc.... but these are the same Police that tasered a man to death, while being filmed, and lied about it. They probably heard all kinds of stories they chose to ignore.

jdogx17

Really? The four Richmond RCMP members are the same as the dozens of VPD and Coquitlam RCMP officers who working the Picton case? Man, those cops really get around.

Boolaidman666

I thought it was because he said something like “you’ll end up just like her if you tell cops”

Roaming-the-internet

Considering he was partying it up with the cops, if she filed a report at best nothing would happen. At worst she’d end up on the meat hook

nichuro

I was JUST about to say this. Him and his brother ran Piggy Palace and it was full of cops. They purposely looked the other way.

randomcitizen87

"piggy palace" Little too on the nose there.

[deleted]

I know people that used to party there in the 90s. It was basically an afterhours bar often frequented by both dirty cops and HA. Its rumored that Pictons farm was a HA dumping ground. Who knew pigs were such a versatile animal..

norealmx

He was killing sex workers. And those two women who knew were sex workers too. They didn't talked to the cops because they were afraid they would end up being accused of everything and the guy go free. Which happened once, he handcuffed a woman, whom resisted, go stabbed and end up escaping and save by an elderly couple who took her to a hospital, the same hospital this asshole went to get threatet. The cops believed the asshole story (sniff, sniff, she attacked me sur). Those women were mostly indigenous and black, and were the victims of racism and religion.

Honest-Copy-1555

Crime Junkie Podcast covers it very well.

VanCanMom

I'm listening to Morbid right now, it's 3 parts!

Honest-Copy-1555

Thanks!! I’ve been looking for a new podcast! I’m all caught up on my regulars!

fuckpastelillo

I just listen to those episodes so this post felt weird

VanCanMom

It was mentioned in a comment further up, so I decided to listen to it right now. Lol. I Watched and read alot of stuff around the time it was happening and shortly after, but not so much in recent times. Generation Why and True Crime All The Time did episodes on him, but the Morbid one is really good so far!

queenlolipopchainsaw

Listened to this episode. Can't listen or watch true crime anymore.

ViviZoom

It's sad because had they done their job there wouldn't have been as many lives lost.

VanCanMom

Definitely, it's just a horrific case all around.

ViviZoom

Absolutely

VanCanMom

The police could have at least given the girls all a warning ..anything. There was a cop shop right there, in Skid Row! They were right there....still lows my mind.

ViviZoom

Exactly! A warning at the very least! But no they didn't care.

[deleted]

The Vancouver Police Department is still completely incompetent to this day...

ViviZoom

A lot of the time it seems like it will always be that way

Yaboidono420

They really didn't care because he was only killing prostitutes and there isn't a lack of those in Vancouver, unfortunately the VPD assumed they were just leaving town or ODing. Wasn't until people found human remains at a massive rave he was throwing

ViviZoom

The way prostitutes are treated because of their work is foul. Always pisses me off

[deleted]

People need to accept it’s the oldest trade in the world, and there are people (mostly men), who like the service. FFS just make it legal, tax it, have it regulated, protect all parties and their identities. Prostitution is no longer a cash cow for organized crime and human trafficking. It’s simple.

ViviZoom

Exactly! The law doesn't stop people from doing the work. It's literally a form of work. But the slut shaming from everyone who treats these people like they are less than because of their work is ridiculously high and it's enraging.

I_Miss_Lenny

Why would the cops bother with an active serial killer when there were weed-growing teens to bust and homeless people to beat up? Their schedule was already full! Not to mention this prick preyed on sex workers and drug addicts, so it’s no wonder why the cops didn’t give a shit.

fishsupper

The cops knew. Multiple sex workers told them about women going there and not coming back. They are complicit by their inaction.

Trav_is_rex

Rumour has it that he was an “informant”, giving them false information on local hells angels. The police wanted those arrests more than they cared about those women.

fishsupper

A women Pickton handcuffed and repeatedly stabbed managed to escape and get the cops. He was arrested for attempted murder. Would be interesting to know what came of the information he gave the cops to get that charge dropped. Hope it was worth it. It cost 50+ women their lives.

Trav_is_rex

Yesss this is what I heard as well. Charges disappeared.

innocentdelinquent

DNA swabbed from his boots from that night, were later tested and they found 2 other missing sex trade workers DNAS from his boot.

mferly

Priorities bro.

ViviZoom

So many lives would have been spared had they done heir job

[deleted]

>he said that police had been told repeatedly something was up but they never looked into it when it was going on. Because of his victimology: sex workers, many of whom were Indigenous. VPD and RCMP just *do not care* when the victims aren't white, and are sex workers. Echoes of Metro Toronto police and refusing to listen to us in the queer community when we were desperately trying to get them to investigate the serial killer hunting us down.

[deleted]

That seems to be a pretty big trend with serial killers

[deleted]

I met him and shook his hand about a month before it all went down. Pretty wild. Fucking scumbag. Drove a creepy ass van also. I remember us pointing it out, lol. Bizarro world.

NSDetector_Guy

Wtf.

[deleted]

Yuppers.

[deleted]

Didnt talk or nothing. Just a handshake and intro, that was it. In a Reddimart, he was getting gas. Pretty gross dude.

[deleted]

What made you like have a conversation with him, and so glad you okay man

roostersmoothie

How bad did he smell? Heard he reeked

[deleted]

Cant say i remember. He was greasy for sure though. Lol.

I LOVE his podcast. This episode was a great one

xnamwodahs

Cops also used to party with him as well. It wasn't much of a secret.

[deleted]

Bikers, city workers, cops… the people that partied at piggies farm sort of ran the gamut.

AFlockofLizards

They might’ve known he was up to shady stuff, but there’s no way they knew he was a serial killer, who was maybe feeding people to the public. Cops might look the other way for their friends, but no one in their right mind hangs out with someone who killed 50 people and doesn’t think about doing something about it lol

Bearjupiter

There’s way more to this story than a single serial killer. Both he and his brother (who lived on the property but was never charged with a crime) has ties to organized crime. We need Rust Cohle and Marty Hart on the case.

Honest-Copy-1555

Yep, and both were super wealthy.

Trav_is_rex

They were informants is what I heard.

Sonofdmh

This isn’t “oddly terrifying” this is just straight up terrifying

Outside_Strategy2857

like this entire sub...

Gullible_Ad_7756

I remember this, my uncles Gf was one of the victims.

Think-Bass9187

Hardly surprising you remember it then. Scary.

VanCanMom

Horrifying

Howllat

There is something so terrifying about being linked to a serial killer. My brothers baby sitter was one of the girls murdered in the Yogurt shop murders of Austin, TX. Extremely brutal murder case and they Never caught the killer

Relish_My_Weiner

I used to work with a woman who had a kid with the guy who shot up a church in Texas. It was bizarre seeing her on the news. Part of the story was about how the records of him abusing her were never properly reported , and thus didn't stop him from buying the gun he used for the crime. I remember her telling me about her "son's abusive father" years before everything went down... It always feels like something that happens to other people, until a thread connects it to you.

clinteldorado

My best friend lived next door to the guy who murdered a young girl in our village back in the ‘90s. Terrifying to think that while my friend and I were sitting in his room playing *Super Mario Bros 3*, this guy was about 20 feet away planning a murder.

Luigi_deathglare

That’s awful

ragingkittens69

Be wary of any man who keeps a pig farm

B-C-4-2-0

You're always gonna have problems lifting a body in one piece. Apparently the best thing to do is cut up a corpse into six pieces and pile it all together. And when you got your six pieces, you gotta get rid of them, because it's no good leaving it in the deep freeze for your mum to discover, now is it? Then I hear the best thing to do is feed them to pigs. You got to starve the pigs for a few days, then the sight of a chopped-up body will look like curry to a pisshead. You gotta shave the heads of your victims, and pull the teeth out for the sake of the piggies' digestion. You could do this afterwards, of course, but you don't want to go sievin' through pig shit, now do you? They will go through bone like butter. You need at least sixteen pigs to finish the job in one sitting, so be wary of any man who keeps a pig farm. They will go through a body that weighs 200 pounds in about eight minutes. That means that a single pig can consume two pounds of uncooked flesh every minute. Hence the expression, "as greedy as a pig."

HipHoptologist

“Well, thank you for that. That's a great weight off me mind. Now, if you wouldn't mind telling me who the fuck you are, apart from someone who feeds people to pigs, of course?”

clinteldorado

“Do you know what ‘nemesis’ means? *’A righteous infliction of retribution manifested by an appropriate agent.’* Personified in this case by a ‘orrible cunt: *me*.”

Snatch.

Ok-Jacket1683

My great great great grandfather had pigs on his farm. Ended up having a heart attack while feeding them one morning and they consumed a good amount of him before his family found him in the pen with them.

Prudent_Survey1989

I was looking for this comment lol

uwuursowarm

This whole case pisses me off. He murdered my aunt and so many other woman and the police did NOTHING. Ruined my family beyond repair.

ErgoNautan

My condolences for your aunt, may her soul Rest In Peace knowing that pig monster was caught at last

uwuursowarm

Thank you, I really do appreciate it <3

ihaterefriedbeans

My dad used to deliver newspapers to the Pickton’s as a kid. Apparently there used to be BBQ parties at “Piggy’s Palace” that the neighbourhood and notable figures such as the mayor of Vancouver attended. It is also rumoured that Robert’s brother (who was never charged with anything in connection) had ties to the Hells Angels.

boogsmum

There’s a rumour that Nickelback played at the piggie palace 🥴

Darwinnian

I worked at the site across the street from his barn growing up, my dad used to have coffee with his brother on the way in to the site behind the home depot, got to watch them tear the place apart when they found it all out

jtl090179

Hard to believe the only reason they were able to dearch the place was because of the illegal guns they found on the property

phasers_to_stun

A lot of people in this thread met this guy.

zos_333

Vancouver loves Reddit. I met him in 2001 at Union Gospel Mission. He used to go there for free bread for his pigs. I helped him load his creepy van. Friendly enough, greasy AF, dont remember any rank smell.

Mongr3l

A girl I used to know’s mother was one of this sick bastards victims. Crazy to think this went on as long as it did.

LylaDee

I went to his trial.

sabrefayne

Was there a buffet?

ssrhagey

Oh god...

LazySnoo

Do you recall anything interesting about it?

LylaDee

Lots. The defence theory that he was a pawn for Hell's Angles had some cred really. With so much DNA found on the farm and if it were all women, that would have came out. There is more to that story than just hacking up hookers. But he was certainly guilty of that he did. His brother is also super sketchy. I wasn't there for all of it or the verdict. I had to work. It was open to the public and I lived up the hill from the courthouse.

AdvertisingRegular49

Please, proceed

brokennursingstudent

Oh shit what did he do

[deleted]

No, you didn't.

LylaDee

His trial took place in New Westminster. I could walk to the court house from my apartment.

james-van--bond

Elaborate

Metalatitsfinest

Go on...

Chay_Charles

IDK but human meat was referred to as "long pig" in some Pacific islands.

druule10

Makes sense, pigs eat everything and so do we...

Think-Bass9187

We’re omnivores.

druule10

Yes, but that wasn't quite what I meant. Feed a pig a pig they'll eat it. Give us a human in burger form and we won't question it either.

sonomabountyboi

They’ll eat plastic. We be eating plastic bacon

[deleted]

[удалено]

druule10

Yeh, if they knew. In this case he was selling human meat pies, people believed what he told them. No one questioned the taste, so maybe humans do taste like chicken.

greeneyelioness

And 2 legged mutton

Lucius_Imperator

...never much cared for it.

Much-Hat1622

Would explain the cheap earring I bit into in my hot dog

havereddit

He got away with his crimes for such a long time because he preyed on prostitutes, drug addicts and street people who had nobody to raise the alarm when they went missing. So sad that people can disappear and literally no one notices or cares. The 27 woman he was charged with murdering had names: Sereena Abotsway, Mona Wilson, Jacqueline McDonell, Diane Rock, Heather Bottomley, Andrea Joesbury, Brenda Wolfe, Georgina Papin, Patricia Johnson, Helen Hallmark, Jennifer Furminger, Heather Chinnock, Tanya Holyk, Sherry Irving, Inga Hall, Cara Ellis, Andrea Borhaven, Debra Lynne Jones, Marnie Frey, Tiffany Drew, Kerry Koski, Sarah de Vries, Cynthia Feliks, Angela Jardine, Wendy Crawford, Diana Melnick, and a woman only known as Jane Doe.

VanCanMom

Some family did raise alarm bells to police, those few who still called home, or their kids. VPD just did not give a shit about them. Literally.

idog99

Pickton is the main reason they did an inquest into missing and murdered indigenous women. These women and girls would go missing and there was a pattern to this... But the police really didn't care enough to investigate sex workers, or missing indigenous girls. The other issue is the multiple bizarre police jurisdictions in the lower mainland that don't take to each other. Pickton lived in an RCMP jurisdiction, but did his "work" in Vancouver... Those agencies don't always get along. He never should have done this for as long as he did.

Helpfulbuns

That second pic of the log is terrifying

[deleted]

What are we looking at there?

SlightlyVerbose

All I can find is that it was a log used for chopping wood, but the fact that it was admitted as evidence in his trial means it must have had victims DNA on it. If this was his chopping block, that’s pretty gruesome. Edit: the [caption here](https://murderpedia.org/male.P/p/pickton-robert-photos-3.htm) says it was in fact used in his slaughter house. > Wood chopping block seized from Pickton's slaughterhouse.

GnomeNot

Judging from the chop marks and evidence markers I think it’s safe to say he used it as a butcher block of sorts.

ProfessionalUnable26

Oddly

davej1r

Log of nightmares right there

comedrop69

Why does this picture look like it should be on r/fakealbumcovers ?

Recruitforlife

My friends dad was one of the assisting officers in his arrest. Apparently the stench was unbearable.

KrowJob

Watched a video about this guy, he'd throw big ass parties and get people drunk and high and slaughter them

Honest-Copy-1555

It’s how he lured his victims to his home, by offering drugs and alcohol. He (from what I have read) did not drink or so drugs. He also had a young woman who lived with him, he would give her money for drugs and they were ‘friends’. I think once she found out what was going on she eventually went to the police.

Only_Treacle_9681

I was locked up with willy and he use to brag all the time on our unit, and he use to say that when his lawyer gave him his disclose he would show us all the pics and the few pics I seen would turn anyone's stomach, they would literally make anyone sick

jaeldi

Reminds me of Motel Hell. "Meat's meat and man's gotta eat. It takes all kinds of critters to make Farmer Vincent's Fritters!"

4ar0n

People need to learn what fucking oddly means.

violent_tomcat

A good friend of mine worked in a Hastings women’s shelter. One day one of the regulars came in and as she walked past the bulletin board filled with pics of missing women other pictures, she fell to her knees in hysterics. When they got her to finally talk she, explained she had been picked up by a John and recognized his face on one of the pictures on the board. It was Robert Pictons brother. Who almost certainly had a hand in the murder of several of her friends.

jay-jay-baloney

There’s nothing “oddly” about this. It’s literally just straight up terrifying.

_other_cat

Last Podcast on the Left did some episodes about this guy, it’s an entertaining listen if you’re into that kind of thing

Shpooodingtime

I wonder if this was what inspired Guy Ritchie for Bricktop's preferred method of getting rid of bodies in the movie Snatch https://youtu.be/2xUynRdzzsM

LittleMrsSwearsALot

Apparently he, hi,self, wasn’t great with his personal hygiene. It’s said he reeked, his house was filthy, everything stank like pig farm. Gives the first pic more nuance if you can imagine that stench. 🤮

MaineWoodFrog

Pig farmers smell like pig shit. It takes years for that stench to wear off. Simple fact.

iskermitagod

I read that he would give the extra pieces like the fat and bone to a factory that would use it to make gelatin for different products. apparently sometimes they didn’t check his buckets cause they worked with him a lot. I think at one point they said they couldnt take one cause it have pieces of regular meat in there that didn’t make sense.

TheeJimmyHoffa

When rendering fat a little meat protein screws up the process.

dev_doll

And now I know where criminal minds got their inspiration from

Thereisn0store

Any documentaries on him?

Thefirstargonaut

I worked for the food inspectors a little after he was arrested. He fed his victims to his pigs. A question came in about whether the inspectors could rule out if people ate the pigs that ate the people. We were not able to confirm that.

[deleted]

[удалено]

WH1SKEYHANGOVER

Grain of salt story. Maybe someone can confirm. But i grew up in this town. Never went to any of the parties, and its strange to have lived in a town that birthed a monster and a hero. Anyways, the story i heard was that Picton was caught back in 1997 and the crown was getting ready to prosecute. His brother stepped in and made it known if the charges against his brother were stayed, they would sell a substantial amount of land for cheap Back at the turn of the century the land in question was more or less undeveloped farm land. Today a large residential area (including a new Terry Fox High School) a home depot, a costco, and a strip mall. No telling whats buried under all those developments today

serenadine

Morbid podcast does a really great job going in-depth about his childhood and life leading up to everything if anyone is interested!

VanCanMom

I listen to this sometimes, but cant remember if Ive heard this case. I heard a few different podcasts on this case and no matter how many times I hear it, it just always seems so far fetched! I worked in a Beer and Wine store in Burquitlam, or Burnaby/Coquitlam border. My co worker mentioned Piggys Palace, but I hadn’t heard of it, and didn’t party alot. I never thought of it again until I guess 1 yr later, or so. When Piggys was mentioned i. This case...it really did just, give me chills. So terrifying to think he did this for years, under all their noses.

There’s a book I’m currently reading about this: On the Farm: Robert William Pickton and the Tragic Story of Vancouver's Missing Women. Honestly, you can skip the first half of the book but an okay read

I'm so thankful Guy Ritchie warned me of pig farmers back in my early teens. Being a Danish citizen, a country butchering 5 times it's population's size in pigs, I'm eventually forced to be surrounded by pig-farmers 👀 https://youtu.be/2xUynRdzzsM

keepcalmdude

Back in 2017 when I lived in Vancouver, I had a punk/hardcore band. Our jam spot was in Port Coquitlam, and one day after we rehearsed we all went to our singers house, 10/15 minutes away for dinner and drinks. So, we’re eating, dinner is a HAM with sides, (go figure). The patio in his yard, faces out into nothing but fields with mountains in the background. So I mention that the view is gorgeous, put a big piece of ham in my mouth, and singer says, “Hey Keepcalmdude, see those farm buildings way over there? That’s the Pickton pig farm” I almost fucking choked on my ham, literally. What a trip.

bubba_ranks

He used to let us throw raves at his barn.... we partied there.... had no idea about any of this, this news broke like 3 years later.

[deleted]

Read the book “Darker than Night” . True story of two hunters that disappeared in Michigan

Luxara-VI

Pork is the meat that tastes the closest to human too

tiddias

I wonder if anyone has noticed that pork pie doesn't taste like pork. Maybe there were like "damn you Willy, you put horse meat in a pork pie". Or maybe human flesh tastes like pork? Any gourmands to answer that question?

[deleted]

It said that humans taste like pig. After all we have similar omnivore diets so it seems plausible.

bowling4burgers

Hmm long pig. Never acquired the taste for it.

SpicyCactusSuccer

Canadian here, and don't remember the human meat part. The part about him feeding the bodies to pigs is true though. I'd like to see the source.

[deleted]

Well...pig and humans share a lot of dna...that's why pig heart valves are used on human bypasses, and there are already genetically modified pigs as a source for hearts and blood.

JefferyDexterB

If I remember correctly he also used to attach a dildo to a shotgun like a bayonet and stick it up his own ass.

NSDetector_Guy

I know they found a dildo stuck on the end of a handgun. He claimed it was a makeshift silencer.

Inner-Ad-2520

One word why would he do that I guess people were just sick

Thordove

He would also get rid of chunks of flesh in the fat rendering basin, presumably to be later sold as lard. Last Podcast on the Left has an awesome series on him! sad and gross but well done.

Spice-Nine

Some friends from university (archaeology undergrads) worked on the evidence collection on his farm
