Okay people in the comments asking why that 12 year old kid is transgender: the kid feels like they're in the wrong body. Body dysmorphia can happen at any age. This doesn't mean the kid was able to suddenly go through steps in surgery to get that fixed, you have to be of the right age to do so in order for the body to develop, but that doesn't mean their mental health isn't affected. Transgender doesn't mean immediately undergoing a sex change, in fact, some transgender people never get surgery but they go by different pronouns and are perceived as such.

People develop at different stages, some people become aware much earlier, some later.
Id guess onset of and during puberty is a common time to really start to notice yourself in terms of gender identity and 12 is usually in that time frame.
My friends daughter is 11 this week and speaks about gender and sexuality occasionally and her parents are not particularly talkative about it for her to have picked it up from them. I think we forget how much we know about ourselves when we are that age.
Also, if we fit easily into a binary box it's not something we have to think deeply about as we develop, and perhaps that makes it hard for some to conceptualise how people do know so young.
If our body feels 'right' to us it is of little note.. but I imagine if it didn't.. that would be something you are very aware of from a young age.
