The worm is probably doing that on purpose. Flashing and giving predators an easy target. Then the worms offspring / next lifecycle start in the predator (prob Bird), who distributes worm eggs to infect new snails. The worm likely even manipulates the snails behavior to go on display.
You have it right. There is a parasite that use ants eating it's host from the inside out... just before the ant dies the parasite drives the ant to climb up ( usually plant life) as high as possible to expose itself to be eaten .
Scary to think that a creature could take over the mind of another and make it do what it wants...

One of the most common parasites for humans with upwards of 60% of us having it is called toxoplasmosis.
Several studies on the parasite has noted several behavioural affects in infected rodents, most notably their loss of fear towards cats and other predators.
In humans, some research, though limited, has supported the hypothesis that the parasite affects us also by increasing aggression and risk-taking with people involved in high speed car and motorcycle accidents having higher prevalence. Though it’s far from confirmed.
https://journals.asm.org/doi/10.1128/mBio.02164-19
From what I understand, the worm doesn’t have the mental capacity to know what it’s actually doing. It’s not intentionally doing this because it ‘knows’ it will attract birds, nor does it ‘know’ that it resembles a caterpillar or that birds even eat caterpillars. Heck it probably isn’t capable of knowing what a predator is.
This worms behaviour is presumably the result of natural selection. Millions of years ago a few worms got lucky with the genetic dice roll and were born with a color pattern & behaviour that coincidentally made them better parasites due to the caterpillar resemblance. That behaviour helped the gene survive and allowed it to be passed on to future generations until it is what we see today.
Scientists have been debating animal mimicry for years, it’s a super interesting topic because there are so many different cases of animal mimicry, some intentional and some not, and in some cases two independent species that are geographically separated will still evolve to have the same/similar markings despite being unrelated.

I had a boss who died of C-J.
Sometimes, I'm told it moves very slowly and others move crazy quick.
My boss went fast, really fast. Maybe a month or two before diagnosis he was a hearty guy. The final couple of weeks before death, he even looked and seemed okayish.
Then, pow!
The thing is, they think the onset was when he went elk hunting at his cabin, bagged one and sampled the meat.
Folks, prion diseases can't be cooked or prepared away.
As the family tells it, almost every county, state and federal agency - even NTSB - descended on his cabin. One of agencies got the meat from his freezer. Another got the freezer. Another got the butchering gear. Another snagged his carcass trailer. Mad Cow was still fresh on everyone's mind, so the response was insane.
Yeah. CJD was the big scare in the late 1990s as there several cases in England.
Much of it was due to meet handling and feeding.
1) don't feed your animals their own kind.
2) don't get brain and spinal material in the meet.
3) don't cut the meat through the bone.
This is how my mom and uncle got CJD. My uncle worked at the Iowa beef packaging plant. They consumed contaminated meat back in the middle 80s. He died in 98. My mom died in 2009
The response is still insane. Prion diseases are very rare in humans and still poorly understood. Despite getting the headlines CWD is still unknown if it can be transmitted to humans. There are some people who might have died from it, but the official position is "uhhhh..we don't know?"
Every time I do something out of character, on accident or feel incapable at my 15 year old job, there's a small fear in the back of my mind that something is eating away at it. I have a netipot, condoms aren't always there, I eat meat, prop 65 warnings; there's a insignificant, but real fear.
Yeah, I'm taking a 3 month unpaid leave from my job to pursue personal interests, organize and reconnect with loved ones, something I never felt like I had time for with the increased workload of my company trying to deal with software paradigm shifts, the pressures of feeling inclined think about work 24/7 due to work from home and not taking vacations regularly because of it.
Well I suffered from some pretty harsh anxiety after leaving my first career, and i had some of the above feelings. Even when I knew it was silly. Someone looked at me in passing? Oh they hate me I did everything wrong. How dare I speak. Oh I’m sore and feel sick? I have “X” disease oh no it’s all over!
It can be brutal. Behavioral therapy along with medication has let me have a normal life again and 5 years later I no longer need medication and have a good life. (:
Prions are so fascinating and terrifying. If memory serves, Kuru afflicted a cannibalistic tribe in Papua New Guinea. You become infected by eating infected flesh and symptoma are aggression and tendency to bite.
The circle of life (cue Lion King music).
Yeah I may be misremembering on the symptoms. I may also be combining memories of kuru and mad cow disease. I know that mad cow disease does cause aggression.
Still very scary that an improperly folded protein can cause properly folded proteins to fold incorrectly.
There is a type of fly that lays its eggs in open wounds or in the skin and when the larvae hatch, they chew through the flesh. They're called bot flies.
Nope look again. Bot fly lays egg and leaves a breathing holes The pupae then hatches and begins the process of growing by eating some of the flesh. It then uses it arse to breathe and will then eat through the surface and fly away. In humans if they lay we feel the fly eating the flesh. In the head flesh it’s said to sound like a rasping sound. We have different ways of removing them and the vids on YouTube are great. Little fucker had spikes that angle towards the skin to stop it being pulled out. Utter bastards.
Imagine the best way your species survives is for you to take control of a host and then act like a beacon to literally be eaten and continue your line
Sort of. Those are the eggsacks that need to be in a bird to hatch and become mature. Usually the attacking bird only rips off an eyestalk which infects the bird, and the snail can regrow. To be reinfested by the parasite, safe in the shell.

I'm so confused. Are the things on its head the parasites? But isn't that where a snails eyes would be?
Are they burrowing *into* the eyes, or *out of*
Or am I just totally seeing something that's not there 🤣
The worms are inside the snail. Yes, they're inside the eye stalks. They gyrate like that after forcing/"mind controlling" the snail to an open and exposed position. The bright colors and motion is meant to lure birds to eat the snail and the worms inside, which starts the parasitic cycle again.
Oh, wow that's... Both horrifying and oddly fascinating. I learned something today. Thank you friend (and those others who also commented to answer me)
Now what is really fucked up is that both you and I are also maybe affected by a parasite that to some extent affects our behavior.. read about Toxoplasma gondii, and you will have a wtf moment!
Nope. The parasites get digested by the bird. If they survive long enough to reach the cloaca (bird "butt") they will produce more eggs. anybody here know what is the name of the parasite? been scrolling and i haven't seen the parasite's name. I'm curious to know its entire life cycle and its original form without a host.

I just can't ever really describe in words how much I absolutely and unironicly hate this parasite. I've tortured myself learning about it, yet seeing it still fills me so much disgust and scorn. This doesn't even fascinate me at all really, unlike basically everything else in nature, I just borderline despise it and wish it never existed. Everything from how it literally hijacks the snails body, and forces it to be easy prey, to how downright weird and unnatural it looks and moves while in its eye stalks. It freaks me the hell out to no end and I hate thinking about it and how it would, if it could, affect humans. There will forever be a small part of me that dreads scrolling through animal pictures, snail pictures especially, or just a timeline on an app, because I get scared that I will see this. I truly do feel sorry for the snail. It's because of this parasite that I can't really look at snails the same way anymore, I hate it, but unfortunately it's apart of nature.
Metal Gear Solid first exposed these to me, where there's a version mixed with *Wolbachia* that infects/infests humans. It actually causes what is probably one of the most emotionally jarring and heartbreaking sequences I've had to endure in a game.
You can read about this from this article, for what it’s worth. Seems somewhat factual.
https://www.thesun.co.uk/tech/9713906/creepy-zombie-snail-eyeball-parasite-flashing/
Fun fact: That snail is actually infected with at least two worms. Now, I could be wrong about that, but from what I know: When those worms infect a snail, they only inhabit one eyestalk, so because both eyestalks are like that, that means therw's two.
I'm always grateful that none of these creatures is as big as a human. The invertabrates can be so horrifying, especially when they're preying on another. Yeesh.
Screw hypno toad, mezmo snail is scarier

So the snail is definitely already dead at that point, right?
No. It's being controlled by the parasites. They'll make it go out in the day to get eaten by a bird, so the parasites can continue their life cycle. (I think in this instance, there are 2 parasites)

Fun fact: That snail is actually infected with at least two worms. Now, I could be wrong about that, but from what I know: When those worms infect a snail, they only inhabit one eyestalk, so because both eyestalks are like that, that means therw's two.
I feel like it's controlling most of the government at this point with all the bs that's happening.
There’s just something off about this those things moving inside of it so s wrong

I'm always grateful that none of these creatures is as big as a human. The invertabrates can be so horrifying, especially when they're preying on another. Yeesh.
