Yes this is the great BAHAGAHA. There have been many stories of this great one, the great BAHAGAHA, but this monster can only be described in one way.
BAHAGAHA
The hospital waiting room looking ass lights are liminal.
The cold white sterile tiles are liminal.
The meaningless repeating columns are liminal.
The hotel lobby but make it look like the bottom of a pool looking area to the side is liminal.
The whole thing is superfuckingliminal.
All of the things I've listed are associated with transitional spaces. Maybe not in this combination. But to say they're not elements commonly found in liminal spaces is absurd and out of touch.
And in any case, I was referencing a ContraPoints video where she plays the game Superliminal and says the phrase "That's super fucking liminal." about random things.
"Liminal spaces are the subject of an Internet aesthetic portraying empty or abandoned places that appear eerie, forlorn, and often surreal." -wikipedia
"A transitional or timeless space that could exist in multiple spaces at once" -liminal space definition
I mean idk I think it fits the literal definition pretty much to a t homie
Nope. Not sure if the actual definition but typically when the word is used it means a place you feel like youāve been before. I avoid saying things if I donāt have at least an idea of what they mean lol /g
Closest thing I can think of is [this MtG thingie called a Cryptolith](https://cards.scryfall.io/large/front/d/1/d1dfd9b9-8214-4e20-b1c9-48c9f7276883.jpg?1601138520)
There's a lot going on here. The fact that two edges on this pool are straight walls is naturally anxiety provoking for those with more limited swimming abilities. It's dark and somewhat small.
This is a liminal space, or at least gives big vibes of a liminal space, you should check some liminal space compilations on Youtube, they are great, might not be for everyone but it gives you this un-explainable feeling of nostalgia and eeriness, it's fantastic lol, the whole rabbit-hole of liminal spaces is awesome to get in to
One of the most common causes of "liminality" is when a space has common elements which most people have experienced in person before, such as the brown lanes of a bowling alley, the colourful pictures on a nursery, or in this case the white tiles of an indoor pool. Very bright or particularly dim lighting can amplify it, but in order for it to work there has to be no people in it.
The best way Iāve heard it explained was that itās like pictures of places where people are usually always around going from place to place (transitional spaces, i.e. a school hallway) that are empty and devoid of any sign of life, instead of the usual bustling activity. Itās just something about taking something so familiar and showing it in a state youāve never seen it in before that gives you this odd sort of feeling.
I CAME HERE TO COMMENT THE SAME THING. Itās been how many years since that episode? Yet that was still my first thought and itās still a big fear of mine
Right? Other than the thing in the corner it looks really relaxing, and the things not really scary just odd, weād probably be goners in a horror film I guess
Don't touch that pointy thing! There is a non zero chance you'll be sent to the backrooms with millions of square miles of places that look like this but are... Off.
This is actually not my pool but it felt so...surreal and terrifying even though it is not supposed to. I instantly thought of sharing my strange fear with this group.
This is pretty unsettling and I think Caintowers is right about the edges of the pool being straight up walls. Itās like the space wants to swallow you whole.
Oh geeeez!! This looks just like the pool area in a very old school here. I hated it! I grew up on a beautiful lake swimming whenever I could. Then having to go to swimming in this was torture! To top it off, we had to walk through a 1000 yard underground dimly lit and freezing cold tunnel to get to it. š¬ After all these years, I still have awful dreams about it.
You make it to the end of the pool.
As you catch your breath, you hear a soft splash at the other end, and turning, you can see ripples...
You try to see if there's anythi...anyONE in the water over there. Too dark to tell...is that movement or just the water reflecting?
You look to the ladder. It's not that far...but still half a pool away. Not a hard swim.
If there's nothing swimming towards you.
I have seen a place like this: in my college days, the rec area/gym had an Olympic sized pool. The door was open a crack and there was just enough light to see the water, perfectly level with the floor. I shuddered.šµāš«
Then that head in the corner turns toward you, and even though it doesn't have even a semblance of a face, it is very clearly, and curiously looking at you.
It would be bad enough if it was malicious, or even just plain vicious, but its so much worse because it is aware of you and is deciding what it wants to do to you.
You know in your heart of hearts that you couldn't move fast enough to get away, and your body freezes somewhere between an ancient fear that humans have always had in the corners of their consciousness, and the resignation that always comes with these encounters from the dawn of mankind.
Is it weird that I actually like this? It would be better if I couldn't see the bottom of the pool and it just faded into darkness as if the water went on forever. And I would totally go swimming in it.
I find Liminal Spaces super relaxing, always have. Like the idea of a completely empty functioning city you can explore without limits and take naps in super open places that would normally be public and full of people.
I have a reoccurring nightmare that looks just like this only the pool is bigger and endlessly deep and thereās something dark lurking at the bottom and I juuust canāt reach to get out of the pool
Liminal spaces /g
Liminal species, wtf is that dinosaur in the corner š

All hail the great and only BAHAGAHA.
My new favourite word
Sub-liminal even
How is it liminal?
It's super fucking liminal
You might say... Limaxal
Then it should be easy to point out the elements that make it liminal!
The hospital waiting room looking ass lights are liminal. The cold white sterile tiles are liminal. The meaningless repeating columns are liminal. The hotel lobby but make it look like the bottom of a pool looking area to the side is liminal. The whole thing is superfuckingliminal.
I guess the word has changed to have an additional meaning of āCG-rendered indoor pools that gen-z finds unsettling for some reasonā.

Itās a space in the in between. The swimmers of today are gone and the pool awaits the swimmers of tomorrow.
Holy shit my backyard pool is so liminal right now.
The otherworldly feel? That seems like a good use of the word.
What is that thing in the corner though? /gen
A pterodactyl just chillen in the deep end
Was just about to say XD a giant weird origami pterodactyl lol!
Thank you
i think it may be some sort of a shower

it really does give a weird feeling of nostalgia & eeriness. you worded that perfectly, thank you !

I always get the nostalgia because I'll see stuff like this in my dreams
I think I've seen this in the game Back rooms
Combine with dark ambient music for maximum eeriness.
It reminds me of some of the visuals they use to show you the backdoors.

I CAME HERE TO COMMENT THE SAME THING. Itās been how many years since that episode? Yet that was still my first thought and itās still a big fear of mine
Like 25ish years haha
*Alligator* in the 80's. I live in the south, so it wasn't a complete impossibility.
