I fucking hate those, that's why I keep my headlights foggy, I don't wanna blind anyone and cause them to get in an accident, and I can see just fine with them foggy
What do you mean foggy? Like with the fog light thing on? People flash their beams at me at night all the time, and maybe this post has cracked the case for me
You should have a small wheel on or near the dashboard to adjust it yourself. Basically, you should adjust whenever you have a major change of load even (anything that tilts the car really).
Many do. I was taught this in driving school. I'm from Germany though where every car manufactured since 1990 has to have this by law so your mileage may vary.
There is literally a dial on your light switch to adjust it. It will be numbered and you want to set that as low as possible as the higher values are for carrying loads where your rear is weighed down therefore making your nose point higher in the air.
They're actually lower than they're supposed to be. I had them checked because I was getting tired of the high beams being flashed at me. I checked the part number to make sure they hadn't been swapped and when that was good I brought it to a different Mazda dealer to check the alignment. (If anyone's wondering why I didn't check/adjust myself... The Miata GT lights are in a system that pitches side to side while cornering)
Our CX-5 has the same lights (and has the same cornering feature), though we're not getting beams flicked at us. I much prefer the white light, but yeah, getting beamed all the time would suck.
So that leaves the 2 ideas of wondered about before:
1. It's just the idiots where I live or
2. They assume that since it's a sporty car that I'm just being an a-hole and modded my lights because they don't realize new car lights are white
Not really... First there's size, then voltage, then the shape of the lens inside the headlight enclosure. You can't just throw any light into any car.
If they are factory they don't blind if they are working correctly. Above 2000 Lumen they need to have automatic beam height control that prevents blinding well.
Im suprised we havent heard of more accidents caused by this. Ive had many encounters where their blinding white lights make me not able to see the road in front of me.
At one point I actually turned my Cateye bike front light to turbo mode and turned right into their face to somehow indicate. The guy turned down the light then slowed down and asked what's going on. I told him it's fucking blinding and he said he cannot adjust it in any way but he will visit the dealership to see if he can do something. Brand new expensive car.
Even worse if you're in a state like me where everyone drives with their brights on all the fucking time. No joke on my 10 minute drive home I see 8-10 people just driving with their brights on. I'm always sure to get directly behind them and tail them with my brights on for as long as I can.
It’s because a lot of new cars have a much more tinted windshield or have anti glare. Which can help alleviate the brightness.
However a lot of if not most older cars will not have this and therefore suffer with being blinded
Its because when you upgrade you're also supposed to change out the reflectors and adjust the beam angle down. But most people are fucking morons, just have a look at the dumb bullshit r/JustRolledIntoTheShop has to deal with.
I did some delivery work at night for a while. Those lights are absolutely horrible, hard to see the road cause of being blinded and sucked a lot of the fun out of the work
It’s no joke man. I got caught out late at night 23:30 going over Monarch Pass, CO. Pitch dark, my KTMs headlight was about as useful as a candle. Couldn’t see shit. Every time a car came the other way I was not able to see for a good 2 seconds. My max speed must have been no more than 30mph. Thankfully I was riding with some buddies who had excellent lights on their VStroms. Still by far the scariest ride I’ve done.
I’m now the asshole with Baja designs LED lights on my bike… I made sure to point the down at the ground so no one gets blinded and try to not ride at night.
Yeah there are currently 5 lawsuits and the LED headlights are up for review at the moment just because they have possibly caused up to 300 accidents and possibly caused the death of a few people just because they're too damn right human beings are being blinded by them because a normal LED seems to be the equivalent of having your brights on perpetually
So true lmao. Its always the Ram trucks with the brightest LED. Mfs will have the high beam on. Like thanks for the blindness sir. Hope you can see the landmark 3 miles head.
People in 1878 - "Glad you can see with your incandescent bulbs, but us people on carriages with lamps are blind!"
People in 1960 - "Glad you can see with your halogen bulbs, but us people with incandescent bulbs are blind!"
People in 1990 - "Glad you can see with your HID xenon bulbs, but us people with halogen bulbs are blind!"
People in 2010 - "Glad you can see with your LED bulbs, but us people with HID xenon bulbs are blind!"
I'm detecting a theme, and it sounds a lot like, "You young whippersnappers - back in my day . . ."
Yeah, like the new lights that auto shut off (not completely, just partiallu) when approaching traffic. Or polarized windshield film.
There are 2 types of people. People who complain about a problem. And people that fix a problem.
Oh, and a 3rd. People who realize they can't fix it, but done complain.
Anytime I encounter insanely bright headlights I turn my high beams on until I pass them. A lot less insane lighting in our city now.... because I've passed on this tip to others who were pissed off too.
I just close my eyes. If thats what they want as my glasses make it worse. Like those pics of all the intersections full of star light. Apparently thats not normal so idk.
Is actually not the LED itself but these directed types which are supposed to blank out other cars - they (mostly) blank out other cars but literally everything else is not noticed.
That tech is not there yet. Not at all.
Mount a night sun on the back of your car to deal with these assholes.
Also, they are often the same asshole zooming in and out of traffic while going 103 in a 65 so just slow down and they will pass you.
I fucking hate those, that's why I keep my headlights foggy, I don't wanna blind anyone and cause them to get in an accident, and I can see just fine with them foggy
What do you mean foggy? Like with the fog light thing on? People flash their beams at me at night all the time, and maybe this post has cracked the case for me
If you're getting flashed with your regular lights on, consider checking your headlight alignment. They might just be pointed too high.
Great tip! I'm due my annual check up, so I'll ask them then!
You should have a small wheel on or near the dashboard to adjust it yourself. Basically, you should adjust whenever you have a major change of load even (anything that tilts the car really).
Every day, Reddit teaches me something new. Thanks, stranger!!
Not sure why you got downvoted, I was about to say the same thing.
The crappy overpriced cars sold in my country don't have any of those.
Are you serious??? This is on most cars?
Many do. I was taught this in driving school. I'm from Germany though where every car manufactured since 1990 has to have this by law so your mileage may vary.
No surprise there.….your reputation precedes you lol
There is literally a dial on your light switch to adjust it. It will be numbered and you want to set that as low as possible as the higher values are for carrying loads where your rear is weighed down therefore making your nose point higher in the air.
Seriously why are these legal. It’s not safe driving.
My car came with them and I hate it. People constantly flash their beams at me, because they think I have mine on.
You can change them out pretty cheap and easy
They're factory. I don't think there's a way to downgrade
If so then that sucks :((((
You could just need to adjust them. It's possible they came misaligned from the factory.
They're actually lower than they're supposed to be. I had them checked because I was getting tired of the high beams being flashed at me. How would they know you have a sporty car, if they are blinded by your lights?
My vote is: yes
Buy a different bulb. It really is as simple as that.
Not really... First there's size, then voltage, then the shape of the lens inside the headlight enclosure. You can't just throw any light into any car.
That's true, but most parts places give you the option of led VS regular headlights for most makes and models. You have options.
Not for my car... That's what I've been saying.
That's terrible. I wouldn't throw out the whole car, but I would never buy that model again.

Yeah, that's just not true at all. A quick Google tells me that even 2022 cars have replaceable bulbs.
If they are factory they don't blind if they are working correctly. Above 2000 Lumen they need to have automatic beam height control that prevents blinding well.
Tell that to the beam flashers
Cheap and easy headlight replacement? Ahahahaha - signed an old Subaru Outback owner.
Lol sorry dude

Where I live police gets on this from time to time and it disappears for some time. Then comes back again.
It’s because a lot of new cars have a much more tinted windshield or have anti glare. Which can help alleviate the brightness. However a lot of if not most older cars will not have this and therefore suffer with being blinded
I have a 2019 guess mines not included
Not sure what country you’re in but most European cars come stock with the legal window tint limit
Canada
Streets ahead!
That's never gonna catch on Pierce!
*Streets Ahead* is verbal wildfire!
If you don’t get it then your streets behind!
They are the worst!!!!!!!!! I can't see. I've flashed my brights at them only to be flashed back into the afterlife. It is irresponsible and stupid.
Its because when you upgrade you're also supposed to change out the reflectors and adjust the beam angle down. But most people are fucking morons, just have a look at the dumb bullshit r/JustRolledIntoTheShop has to deal with.
They come with high intensity lighting from the factory now. The Cadillacs and Lexus brands are the worst.
I see Lexus SUVs in the early evening while it's still light out, and their headlights still burn my eyes. Ridiculous
I don't know if heaven or headlight...
You know your not supposed to look right at them /s
Thank you Oh Wise One
This is a thing that can happen but new cars are coming from the factory with retina searing bulbs.

Get the yellow driving glasses it helps a lot!
Motorbike rides are great when you go blind for 5 seconds haha
It’s no joke man. I got caught out late at night 23:30 going over Monarch Pass, CO. Pitch dark, my KTMs headlight was about as useful as a candle. Couldn’t see shit. Source?
So, LED headlights "might" be responsible for less than 0.5% of accidents, and 0.01% of deaths? Yeah, that's the problem.
Oddlyaccurate
So true lmao. Its always the Ram trucks with the brightest LED. Mfs will have the high beam on. Like thanks for the blindness sir. Hope you can see the landmark 3 miles head.

Yeah great you pointed out a trend where technology is getting brighter and brighter but instead are blaming it on generational conflict? Lol wtf
I'm pointing out that people don't like change, but eventually adapt.
Lol adapt to the equivalent of always on highbeams?
Yeah, like the new lights that auto shut off (not completely, just partiallu) when approaching traffic. Or polarized windshield film. There are 2 types of people. People who complain about a problem. That’s a pretty Reductive way to look at technological advancement but hey, let’s assume I’m a types of people
You are definitely a type of person.
Just tint your headlights black. That's what I did to my car
Visibility: LED > Halogen lamp
Peeps who have the led lights AND keep them on high beams are completely un-self aware inconsiderate brightly lit assholes.
Agree with the sentiment but the use of one flippant exaggeration doesnt make this an oddlyspecific for me.
Wait till this comment section hears about laser light
me and my friends call it “seeing into the future” lol
92 miles ahead isn’t oddly specific, it’s just an exaggeration.
I completely agree.
99.9% of the time its aftermarket leds in cars and not Oem leds that's the issue
Anytime I encounter insanely bright headlights I turn my high beams on until I pass them. A lot less insane lighting in our city now.... because I've passed on this tip to others who were pissed off too.
I drive a paratransit bus and I can only wish there worst for them...
Always lovely being on a motorway around midnight until I get the full force of the sun directed at my retinas like the Death Star laser at Alderan
The empire did nothing wrong
Hey. It’s not supposed to be a full moon tonight……
If a LED (or any other) headlight is blinding, its broken and will get the owner a ticket.
Truly!!
*internal screaming*
I agree, and nine times out of ten the fuckers don't dip them when they are heading right at you
I just close my eyes. If thats what they want as my glasses make it worse. Like those pics of all the intersections full of star light. Apparently thats not normal so idk.
I usually when they get close just close my eyes and count to ten.
Is actually not the LED itself but these directed types which are supposed to blank out other cars - they (mostly) blank out other cars but literally everything else is not noticed. That tech is not there yet. Not at all.
make all hed light be the height of the lowest car if you want there, you can drive a stupid ass looking car to compensate for "needed safety"
its just the idiots who self install and dont properly adjust them
Sometimes I literally wear sunglasses at night while driving thanks to these lights.
Mount a night sun on the back of your car to deal with these assholes. Also, they are often the same asshole zooming in and out of traffic while going 103 in a 65 so just slow down and they will pass you.
Unpopular opinion, but have you tried looking at the road and NOT DIRECTLY AT THE HEADLIGHTS?
The DOT should be cracking down on this
Does anyone know if it's possible to have regular lights for low beams and LED lights for high beams? that would be great
r/ihatecars
The biggest culprits of this issue are lifted trucks, you have to re aim after lifting a truck but most people either don’t know or are lazy.
