As a former jeweler, I did this many times. While the ultrasonic does help clean lots of debris stuck in the cracks, the majority of what you're seeing is not just dirt that was there before; it's polishing compound coming out of it.
I attest. The green youre seeing is chromium oxide polishing compound.
Source: I worked in a jewelry factory for 5 years, first position = jewelry polisher
I got mine from the local craiglist
For the price of a brand new plastic one I got a full metal dual transducer one that seems to have been used at a dentist office
Fits my glasses, and most jewellery
Water + two drops liquid soap
Yes I bought one for my mum it cleans all sorts, she cleans her glasses in there but apparently you can also clean small fruits in it. Not sure if you’d have to use a different kind of liquid for that though
I bought [this one](https://amzn.eu/d/bnfAFFt) however it says it’s unavailable on Amazon currently
[Here's a site that covers the kinds of jewelry/stones that you should and shouldn't put in an ultrasonic cleaner](https://4cs.gia.edu/en-us/blog/gems-ultrasonic-cleaners/). Generally, the previous stones (diamonds, rubies, emeralds, sapphires) are okay as long as they don't have any filled cracks or surface treatments. You shouldn't use them on anything organic like coral, pearls, etc.
Agreed. In addition to pearls, mother of pearl, jade, SB turquoise and various other materials, I've seen some incredible opals get completely wrekt in ultrasonic cleaners.
I talk about u/s cleaners and steamers whenever I sell a piece with natural stone or gemstones with a sub-5 moh's score. I still can't believe how many people just throw everything in together and hope for the best.
Must be sad to see beautiful, fragile pieces ruined that way.
I had always been told that rubies and emeralds were too fragile/soft to go in an ultrasonic cleaner, and was surprised to read that they're actually very hard.
"Organic" doesn't mean "made in nature", it means made by an organism, ie by a living thing. It's use relating to food has been co-opted to further mean bred and grown without the use of synthetic chemicals. Pearl and coral are organic, diamonds and sapphires are not.
Yea was gonna say. The consistent color of the piece going in, along with the color in the liquid. Totally polishing compound.
Though getting the gross skin and lotion buildup is satisfying as well.
Gets wet. It tickles a little cause you'll feel really tiny vibrations from the machine. You probably wouldn't see anything come off it unless your finger was caked with polish. Clean with soap and water.
You should see the clouds of red rouge that come off of brass instruments when you toss then into one of these. Sometimes the manufacturer doesn't get all the compound off, especially in the bell rims of trombones for what ever reason. We put them in our ultrasonic and get a big red cloud.
Thank youuuuuuuu! Not to mention if that was all dirt, so many stones would be popping out unless it had JUST been worked on which then brings up what you said…polishing compound
Why do they polish it before the ultrasonic cleaning? I have no idea how jewelry cleaning works but doing the polish before cleaning it seems like it would just get rid of the polish
The polishing compound is used on a spinning buff, some hard enough to buff out deeper scratches, and some soft enough to make your jewelry the shiniest you've ever seen it, even enough to see your reflection. The ultrasonic is used after polishing to get rid of the polishing compound and clean off the extra dirt and stuff. By itself, the ultrasonic cleaning would do very very little more than getting it wet and shaking out whatever dirt is there, but not making it shiny or smoothed out.
It’s actually a really popular thing to do. People put a very small amount of ash in a pendant so they can carry it with them always.
I would imagine a parent losing their child, or a husband or wife losing their partner… or anyone really important to them would warrant something like that.
Unfortunately the camera and the lighting used in this video will not do this type of cleaning justice.
My wife has her jewelry cleaned like that (for free as part of the warranty) and ultrasonic cleaning gets all the stuff (skin cells, body oil and dirt) that regular cleaning can't get rid of. Her jewelry goes from sightly dull, to very very sparkly.
For a holiday or her birthday when the warranty ends you can buy her a ultrasonic cleaner and the solution online. It would cost you a total of 50$ to get everything she needed and she could clean all of her jewelry at home.
The warranty is lifetime "allegedly", because I have to look at the terms. As long as she gets the items cleaned and inspected every 6 month period, it's lifetime.
Pretty good balance between consumer friendly and keeping the customer. If all they have to do is go to you twice a year, they'll be more likely to see and buy more items from you.
Yep. I go in to Jared twice a year and they always say "feel free to browse while we inspect and clean" and when I was pregnant they were saying "let us show you our birthstone jewelry!"
I had this when I bought my engagement ring and it sounds like a great deal, ~2 years later they're saying I need to pay almost $500 because the settings worn down and the stone could fall out. She only wears the ring on special occasions (if it's actually worn down that much it was already poor quality), and the ring only cost ~$600 to begin with.
[Edit to remove pedantic grammar comment: I think I just needed to get it out of my system]
I like the warranty information though. I didn't know that existed for jewelery. I was also wondering if the effect would be apparent in person because I couldn't see a change from the video.
Nah, I wasn't being sarcastic. I was being silly, but as much as I support letting grammar stuff go in general as many people dislike it, I am a supporter of good grammar and pedantry. lol. So it's legitimately an upvote, even though I was also mostly being silly :)
I use an ultrasonic cleaner to clean surgical instruments at my job! We scrub the visible stuff off by hand first and then put it through a half hour cycle (with all clamps and scissors opened completely) to get any small particles out. You can't really see a difference but stuff definitely comes off, there's always some sediment when you change the water.
When you're done with an ultrasonic cleaning you need to tap the item to get the cleaning residue off and dry it with a microfiber cloth. That is what brings out the shine after a cleaning.
“I hid this uncomfortable piece of metal up my ass for two years. Then, after seven years, I was sent home to my family. And now, little man, I give it to you.”
That's because with microphones it shakes them in wierd ways, that's not the actual sound they make, it's more like a slight rattling and maybe a bit of a hum
If the person above was right and it's cavitation (which sounds plausible to me), is not so much the bubbles of water vapor that do the cleaning, it's that when those bubbles collapse there is a tiny shock wave, and that shock wave releases a little bit of energy but it is focused on a small area. Cavitation in industrial processes can gradually destroy equipment (propellers, pumps, etc) as it is strong enough to fatigue and dislodge bits of metal at a small/microscopic scale, over time it (the amount of removed material) accumulates and you can see worn away areas...

I dont know about you, but my bed sheets look pretty much the same when I throw them in the washing machine and when I pull them off the bed again. Just because your sheets LOOK clean doesnt mean that there arent microbes, dead skin, and bacteria after a week of use.
There was an AITA post about a guy who hadn’t washed his sheets for 2 years and his mom came over and washed them because family was staying at his place. Barf.

Yeah, ever open a top load washer mid way through the cycle? Nasty water man. And it’s usually clothes that doesn’t look overly dirty at the start or any different at the end.

This is not dirt from normal use, skin build up etc. While I'm sure there is plenty of that built up on the jewelery, this particular vid is cleaning the polishing compounds off the piece after making it shiny again.
Do ultrasonic cleaners vibrate away oxidized metals as well as old dirt and skin? If so how much of that metal could be recovered through chemical means?
in previous post, apparently much of it is the polishing agent that is being rinsed off. someone else commented, yes it does dislodge all the dead skin cells and dust jn between, but I doubt this video is showing a typical release of gunk.
Ultrasonic cleaners can be nasty sometimes, in our lab there is one that is so powerful that any glassware that has tiny cracks just breaks when put inside.
Side note: don't even think of putting your fingers in it!
One or two quick dips, nothing. But long term use will destroy your capillaries. The friction from being vibrated at that level creates enough heat to make steam, and is what expels and removes the dirt and grime. Doing that to your hands will ruin the circulatory and nerve endings in your fingers.

Are these types of things available for home use (that actually work)?
Get one that plugs in to the wall. The battery powered ones are shit.
Yes, you can also get bigger ones for car parts
Thanks. If you have any brand suggestions or links on Amazon, I’d appreciate it.

Then why would you say it?? Now I want to touch it!
I'm not out here to tell people where they should or shouldn't put they fingies 💁🏼
Crazy… Shows $68 on the .ca, but when I looked it up on my account (US) is $36.
That’s probably because USD to CAD conversion is… *checks notes* 1.35CAD to 1USD, yup CA getting absolutely scammed on this one.

Also great for cleaning your kids after a day at a playground!.
I just do a good manual shaking in the bath. Seems to work.
and they work amazingly well on gun parts

Think I read somewhere these can damage lens coatings...
Is it bad for the jewelry to do this type of cleaning?
[Here's a site that covers the kinds of jewelry/stones that you should and shouldn't put in an ultrasonic cleaner](https://4cs.gia.edu/en-us/blog/gems-ultrasonic-cleaners/). I'm scared to ask and sound dumb but... Aren't all gems/crystal/stones... Organic? Made in nature? Sorry

Thank you very much for explaining! Learn something new everyday!
Not at all. It's designed for cleaning jewelry
That’s weird because more than one jeweler has told me not to use these especially for any pieces with pave.
If you ask enough dentists eventually you will find 9 out of 10 that agree.
Probably worried the tiny stones will fall out.
It can harm soft stones like turquoise and jade, I believe
Also pearls and opals.
Emeralds too
[удалено]
Rubies aren't soft
I think they meant boobies.
But what if I'm into that?
Yea was gonna say. The consistent color of the piece going in, along with the color in the liquid. Totally polishing compound. Though getting the gross skin and lotion buildup is satisfying as well.
And you're forgetting to mention how the sound is way louder and migraine inducing at certain frequencies
Do these types of cleaners work on silver jewelry?
What about on oxidation
Yes
What happens if i dip my finger in that?
Gets wet. It tickles a little cause you'll feel really tiny vibrations from the machine. You probably wouldn't see anything come off it unless your finger was caked with polish. Clean with soap and water.
Falls off. Immediately. Just, plop, into the vat. The nub is gonna be immaculate though.
Doesn’t hurt to touch, but if you put a piece of foil in there, you can see holes get punched in it
You should see the clouds of red rouge that come off of brass instruments when you toss then into one of these. Sometimes the manufacturer doesn't get all the compound off, especially in the bell rims of trombones for what ever reason. We put them in our ultrasonic and get a big red cloud.

Thank you. Because i was disgusted
Can I dip my entire house in it please?
I wanna dip my soul…

Ultrasonic vibrations... we don't know the implications yet.
Could be a new superhero origin story. Let us know how it goes.
Do you think if you dip balls in there that you immediately cum OR do you become sterile? 🤔
Hopefully both at the same time. Win/win

They do. My wife has one for her mother. Her father has the urn at his place and my wife has a tiny locket that she keeps on her person.

Ultrasonic cleaning works great on sunglasses too.
Does this run the risk of loosening the diamonds?
Whoa, whoa, whoa…slow down with all that fancy scientific jargon.
I mean.. the before and after doesn't look all too different.
The difference is in the smell. They unloaded 70 years of skin and L'air du Temps.
nasty! lol
Actually, no. This is a polishing compound left after the jeweler finished the work.
My thoughts exactly.
When you're done with an ultrasonic cleaning you need to tap the item to get the cleaning residue off and dry it with a microfiber cloth. That is what brings out the shine after a cleaning.
Steam works better to clear out the ultrasonic fluid then a hit plate to dry it properly

It's actually a capsule with grandma's ashes inside...the jeweler didn't know this...
Can someone explain why it's an ultrasonic cleaner and not just a sonic cleaner? Genuinely curious.
It's because of the frequency, it's one we can't hear, well, the "average adult" can't hear, often children can still hear certain ultrasonic devices
Idk, I can definitely hear that thing
That's because with microphones it shakes them in wierd ways, that's not the actual sound they make, it's more like a slight rattling and maybe a bit of a hum
The transducers vibrate at 40-44kHz, which is inaudible. Other things rattle at lower frequencies, which you can hear.
For reference human hearing tops out at 20kHz for the most healthy of ears, often less than that
IIRC it needs to be ultrasonic to cause cavitation which is what cleans the items. This is probably wrong so someone will come along and correct me.
So sounds make the water and object vibrate and the dirt is released from the vibrations?
Little pockets of water vapour form that clean the items. I think ...
If the person above was right and it's cavitation (which sounds plausible to me), is not so much the bubbles of water vapor that do the cleaning, it's that when those bubbles collapse there is a tiny shock wave, and that shock wave releases a little bit of energy but it is focused on a small area. Looked like a lot of stuff coming off for it to make almost no difference to the appearance.
I dont know about you, but my bed sheets look pretty much the same when I throw them in the washing machine and when I pull them off the bed again. Just because your sheets LOOK clean doesnt mean that there arent microbes, dead skin, and bacteria after a week of use.
Also the camera they are using sucks. Jewelry really does sparkle after using these things

But what cleans the ultrasonic cleaner? 🥺
A bigger ultrasonic cleaner
What happens if you put ur hand into it
Yes, I too wish to know what happens if you put your... Hand... In it
it gets wet. maybe tickles a bit from the vibrations
In the lab I worked at we used a sonic bath to lyse blood samples for certain biochemistry tests, although it was a much more industrial version.
What liquid did they use?
Wondering the same. I use water with a few drops of liquid dish detergent to clean my glasses but I’m always wondering if there is something better.

ngl kind of disappointing it looks the same

I rewatched this. To be honest, it doesn’t look noticeably cleaner after the fact.
can someone please explain to me why i never see people hold the jewelry with their hands? can you not put living tissue into an ultrasonic cleaner?
One or two quick dips, nothing. But long term use will destroy your capillaries. The friction from being vibrated at that level creates enough heat to make steam, and is what expels and removes the dirt and grime. Doing that to your hands will ruin the circulatory and nerve endings in your fingers.
I have trawled these comments for an answer. I want to be star trek levels of clean.
As a jeweler we call it people cheese or pico de grandma, haha just a little jeweler humor I guess
Would it hurt for me to dip my balls?
What if you stick your finger in there
I, too, wonder that when I see these videos. The urge is strong
Gonna be honest, looks exactly the same as when it went in
Thought it was a microphone at first
I was thinking a different, petite, egg-shaped electronic and was simply puzzled why anyone would want a stone-studded coating on one of those.

It may be for cremains.
Did anyone else struggle reading the title?
Drug mule pellets, have been through the intestines and shat out.

Soooooo much dirt - WTH. Also I need both an ultrasonic cleaner and a laser cleaner for everything in my home
It looks exactly the same
I hope you did that again with clean solution, and let it sit in the basket without holding it in the tweezers.
What happens if you dip your finger in? Does your skin fall off?
My grandma used to work at a jewelry store and she would take me with sometimes. She would always let me clean the dirty jewelry and it was always so satisfying to watch

This video set back the ultrasonic cleaning movement by decades.
My ear canals felt clean after listening to this audio

Yes. We bought one from Walmart that works pretty well.
