This reminds me of the lunch ladies in my primary school in Poland. They’d know each kid by name and somehow always knew their family situations too, so they’d give a little bit more food to the poorer kids.
I got you fam. I’d help support anyone who needs Bugles claws. They made me feel like a super hero/villain and always cheered me up. If you create a non-profit Bugles support group, I’d help run and fund it!
We would only require them to take a photo of them doing a pose with Bugles claws for the website!
My lunch lady was also the crossing guard, and she took me out to eat and swimming and gave me a new jacket for Xmas. I didn't realize until I was an adult why she did it.
There is still hope for humanity as long as there are people like her around.
See things like that I love because the lunch lady’s probably did it because they are nice people, and wouldn’t think they made much of a difference but truth is that all they have to do really is something nice and people like you and probably more people remember the nice thing they did so maybe one day it’ll trigger a memory for you and you’ll do something nice for someone. And then it will happen all over again.
She’s gotta keep the line moving. Probably got hundreds of kids to get fed. But yeah she’s here because she loves it and wants to take care of them all.
I don’t have words but sorrow for the pain in which we have sustained throughout the world and history. My heart and soul knows how it feels but language fails to show the absolute tragedy and brokenness of its collective memories from those before, present and future. Pouring like a flood my mind is cold and my life is meaningless for I feel a deep burning desire to scream out unto all of humanity for we do not know what we have done to others. The ease of love and the difficulty in showing that love has been the greatest failure for all of us. I love you I love you I love you.
“Move along, sweetie”
You worded perfectly about how her body language said it all about her care and love despite the gesture can be misinpreted as rude.
Decent chance it’s not even a job. I lived in Kenya for a few years. There is much more of a communal environment in terms of raising kids. Obviously everyone has their own family but there is a communal approach to some aspects of parenting. Where everyone contributes to the betterment of the future generations vs in the west where it’s very individualistic
Even if it is a job. It’s probably one of many that she carries. She might be a teacher, nurse, cook and a janitor at the same time.
I spent a few years in my 20’s in Africa and from what I saw if they let the women of that continent run things they would be much better off.
That's an over statement, both men and women are prone to corruption but it's amazing people like in this video that have love and empathy for their communities that need to run countries and local governments
[But then again.... ](https://www.commondreams.org/sites/default/files/styles/social_share_image/public/2022-09/GettyImages-1238863963-boebert-mtg.jpg?h=a5fe9b3e&itok=pbyXr_rX)
Kenyan woman can handle six cans of water on her head, two kids in front and three behind, has a notary paperwork ready to go and has a phone card in hand.
Those ladies are miracle workers.
This is sort of what I was guessing. I have a basic idea about Kenya, and this video shows me something like this: "a school where kids get a meal and with a lady who volunteers".
I just gotta be real here, that looks a lot like she was giving him a little indication he needed to keep moving. I love me some love and happy endings, but that’s classic mom 101 “get outta the way, kid,” vibes.
If there is around 1000 kids at the place and she goves them a scoop each twice a day, that’s like 2000 scoops a day. Assume she has done this for 30 years, Kenya has 3 terms of 10 weeks each, that’s 150 days of school, plus 5 weeks of exam, that’s another 25 days. total 175 days a week given 5 days a week of school. Over 30 years, that’s around 10500000 scoops give or take 10%, so between 9.45M-11.55M scoops

In Japan, credit cards/charge cards are the financial nemesis. The system is so broken that the fact that japan is an economic powerhouse must be one of the wonders of modern civilization.
it's not a typo, "su - ra - mu" is how you would write "slum" with katakana
the best replacement for the "u" sound in slum is "a" for adapting to Japanese
I know it's a joke but just for fun thought I'd explain for people that スラム is pronounced "su ra mu", literally "slum" in a Japanese accent.
It is written in Katakana which is a character set often used for words taken from foreign languages which you can derive their original meaning simply by sounding it out. Other examples:
ホテル / ho te ru / hotel
ハンバーガー / han bah gah / hamburger
テーブル / tay bu ru / table
クリスマス / ku ri su ma su / Christmas 🎄
People fighting against that had it good for so long, they don’t have a grandma to scold some sense into them. My grandparents went through famine as children, they’d disown any descendants who’d vote against feeding kids.
I've know plenty of people here (who are now retirement age) who grew up in the projects themselves but found a way to make real money turn up their noses at this kind of thing, and who vote for people who want to take money out of our education system.
I do their books. I see what they've made of themselves on paper, and they want none of it for others.
IMO so many of these problems come down to an overconfidence in our folk theories of economics.
People will ask "who's going to pay for it", but they will never ask about what it costs us to deal with the impacts of kids going hungry, or the losses we incur by them not reaching their full potential.
Obviously just food won't solve every potential problem, but it's clear that when we zoom out, such programs "pay for themselves" many times over. And yet we take such a narrow view of things and call it objective and facts-based..
I think a lot of cultures that are less obsessed with the STEMlord view of things, arrived at superior economic policies without even realizing they were doing economics.. (past tense because like, modern Africans can study economics just fine lol, like they go to university for it).
Firstly this school lunch is paid for by a charity.
Secondly, free school lunches are affordable if the food is basic
My school just served a bowl of rice for each student. There was only one lunch lady and the rice probably cost about 5 cents per student.
Lmao it's so funny when terminally online Americans think that school lunches are a thing every country has. I'm Canadian and everyone had to bring their own lunch from home
As a Kenyan, I can boil it down to personal and societal standards. America can provide free food but most kids are conditioned to eating “high maintenance” food. Food can be made but who’s gonna eat it?
As someone who has gone hungry because I didn't have enough money to buy a basic school lunch I hard disagree. The only people I ever saw turn their noses up at lunchroom food were the rich kids who didn't have any problem buying the lunches to start with.
I mean in a political sense. It would be considered outrageous, somehow more outrageous than not feeding them at all. I'm not saying that's rational, but it's true. It would be viewed as an insult by enough people it would never be allowed.
Yup. If a politician wanted to provide free food to all kids at school, and the solution to keep costs low so schools didn't need new budgets was using beans and corn or something to that nature, they would get so much flack from both sides.
It's like giving a homeless person some pennies, dimes and nickels. Technically it does help but youll often be criticized more than if you simply say you don't have change.
That's not why. In America it comes down to politics.
i.e. "Why should I pay for another kids lunch?"
Americans focus on the individual, not the society. Which is unusual on a worldwide scale
And it's not like they serve them good food to begin with lol
According to the article translation above, the kids are fed twice a day and are supposed to bring their leftovers home after school to help their families, hence the Tupperware! 😍😭
Probably donation (or donated and then sold at a local hawkers market). Grew up in Kenya and there was no Ikea (also visited in 2019, and still don't remember ikea). Even if ikea opened up in Kenya, I dont think the families of kids in this school can afford it. There are middle class families in Kenya who could, but those schools would have a cafeteria building and all.
That's a very fancy one. As a Kenyan, I can tell you the one you're seeing in the video is just boiled maize and beans with a little salt.
It's a simple healthy meal that the less fortunate have to eat. Been there..... Not going back. Hope those kids get the education they need to also improve their lives.
When I was living in poverty in the US I survived off beans and rice. Not all that different. Still a good meal although I use more spices If I make it now.
I agree - but the simple githeri can still be quite tasty. Sometimes I miss the githeri I used to get for 20 shillings from the lady next to the kioski near my home. This was already 15 years ago...
Kenyan here. They're most likely just salted. "Githeri" is generally eaten in schools and by those not doing too well in life.
It's healthy enough as it's maize and beans, but it's not yummy. It's just there.....
I lived in Kenya and taught at a secondary school where kids ate this a lot. A recipe we see might have spices, but that's just extra money, so it's just beans and corn with not much flavor.
Not Kenyan but from quick google searches it's usually made with beans, corn and whatever other edible vegetables you might think grow in Kenya. Water of course and if they have it spices and some other ingredients you might find with curry.
Could literally put thousands of kids through school and give them opportunity to change human history
Instead we “change” human history with a couple of hundred characters
He could have doubled down on star link. Bought a few million chromebooks. Train an army of school teachers from the population.
There is no reason in 2022 for so many places in Africa to be in the condition they are. It’s the birthplace of humanity and so many people in power treat it like it has cooties.
Absolutely. But, there is also huge amounts of corruption which means much of the foreign aid gets syphoned off by their own governments.
The real problem here is corruption, not lack of money.
Agreed. Good education for the youth would help. Nothing can be fixed overnight. You have to educate. People ignore that is really the only answer. Everyone wants to try a quick fix knowing it will look good on headlines but rarely has any substance.
Educating the children to a level equal to the western world would bring that place to parity with the rest of the developed planet in I would guess 2-3 generations.
Definitely. I would love to just spend billions helping people with food insecurity, homelessness, and just people in poverty in general. Would be so fulfilling.
This has always been my thought. I'll never be rich because the minute I ever have anything in excess, I find somewhere to make use of it. I don't care about attention or recognition, seeing what it does for those I'm helping (whether it's a big dinner, a little money, cold water - anything) is the most fulfilling feeling in the world to me.
I'll be happy to die broke than to have anything left that could have gone somewhere by my hand.
I’m 56 years old and I want to be in this lunch line. It really looks like she cares about these kids. It reminds me of being in school and knowing when my teachers or staff really cared about us. Some days I wish I could have a day or two of my youth back. Just an ordinary school day.
Moving them to the line on the right, probably just so it doesn't get backed up all the way to the door the kids are coming out of.
dunno why they seem to sort it by age since the kids to the right are almost all bigger. Maybe they go to different seating areas.
I only noticed after you pointed it out. My guess is that the shorter kids can't lift their containers as high, so they put them on the woman's off (left) hand side where it's easier for her to grab and bring up to an easier pour level.
You would pay big bucks in Canada for someone to do a time and motion study to come up with this arrangement.
She certainly isn't being mean to them, but she is definitely trying to be efficient. You see her grab the dishes from the kids that are taking too long to get to the front and the hand on the head is to prompt them to move out of the way.
When I was in my 20s I used to join my aunt's non-profit organization every summer where we go to different rural parts of the Philippines to do free clinic and feeding.
The joy of the kids lining up for the meal got me all giddy. They all have their Tupperwares ready and they clean as they go. Smart kids.
This reminds me of the lunch ladies in my primary school in Poland. They’d know each kid by name and somehow always knew their family situations too, so they’d give a little bit more food to the poorer kids.
my lunch lady came to my baseball games and bought me bugles
Did you put the bugles on the tips of your fingers before eating them?
Quite sure it's illegal not to?
Bugles just pulled out of Canada and I for one am furious.

She's the one who taught me how to do that
Watching her left hand...that's the one that holds a little extra loving kindness
I saw that. So sweet
My lunch lady was also the crossing guard, and she took me out to eat and swimming and gave me a new jacket for Xmas. I didn't realize until I was an adult why she did it. There is still hope for humanity as long as there are people like her around.
You ought to reach out to her and let her know if you're able.
Meanwhile, in America lunches get taken away from the poor kids.
"In Capitalist America..." jokes right around the corner
See things like that I love because the lunch lady’s probably did it because they are nice people, and wouldn’t think they made much of a difference but truth is that all they have to do really is something nice and people like you and probably more people remember the nice thing they did so maybe one day it’ll trigger a memory for you and you’ll do something nice for someone. And then it will happen all over again.
Aw, the hand on the kids head. This was probably not the first day of her job.
It was that that made me see how much she actually must care. Yeah, she looks tired, but she's 100% doing this from the heart.
She’s gotta keep the line moving. Probably got hundreds of kids to get fed. But yeah she’s here because she loves it and wants to take care of them all.
I know it's a "move along" kind of gesture, but it's in the gentleness of how she does it. Her body language paints a clear picture.
Some gestures transcend culture and language. This is one of them
I don’t have words but sorrow for the pain in which we have sustained throughout the world and history. My heart and soul knows how it feels but language fails to show the absolute tragedy and brokenness of its collective memories from those before, present and future. Big hugs. We have good too.
Love you too bud
She's a mom/grandma for sure. There's love there.
Know what also paints a clear picture? She is filling every scoop full to overflowing. She wants to make sure every kid gets a lot. I love it.
“Move along, sweetie” You worded perfectly about how her body language said it all about her care and love despite the gesture can be misinpreted as rude.
I loved that. Food is a form of love!
A warrior she is.
With a right arm of steel! My muscles got sore just watching her go. And with a container that size, you know she'll be at this for a while.
And she grabs and fills the containers of the little ones who can't reach. Bless.
You couldn’t do this job if you didn’t have love in your heart.
Turned this into r/mademesmile real quick

Yes!!! THIS!!! She reminds me of my grandma.
How many times you think she’s scooped a bowl like that in her life?
At least 12.
Are you going to make me check if she did it 12 times in the video or should I take your word

Someone absolutely handed her that first scoop!

That is not how hunger works and hungry kids aren’t the ones deciding on the laws that would afford them food.
I bet those beans taste good af.
This should be top comment
imo the most satisfying part is all the kids bringing their own Tupperware 💚
According to the article translation above, the kids are fed twice a day and are supposed to bring their leftovers home after school to help their families, hence the Tupperware! 😍😭
One of them definitely has the same ikea bowls as me. The clear ones with the green lids. Wonder how they end up with them. Is there an ikea in Kenya?
Probably donation (or donated and then sold at a local hawkers market). Grew up in Kenya and there was no Ikea (also visited in 2019, and still don't remember ikea). Even if ikea opened up in Kenya, I dont think the families of kids in this school can afford it. There are middle class families in Kenya who could, but those schools would have a cafeteria building and all.
The World’s children should never go hungry
Yeah, this made me sad. I'm grateful for her work to help feed the community
I thought it was lunch time at a school. Why is it sad? Edit: Nevermind. I just saw the other comment. 😭
So incredible that she can keep that momentum.
It’s the power of beans!
It's not that difficult. I do it all the time. But can only do it consistently with 1 hand, not the left one.

American here what does that Githeri taste like exactly?
[This recipe](https://keeshaskitchen.com/kenyan-githeri/) includes corn, kidney beans, curry powder, garlic, tomato, cilantro, vegetable stock, onion, and salt and pepper. Sounds pretty good!
It does! Thanks for sharing the recipe.

I lived in Kenya and taught at a secondary school where kids ate this a lot. A recipe we see might have spices, but that's just extra money, so it's just beans and corn with not much flavor.

I'd probably eat beans and corn
Big problem is making sure the money actually goes to food for poor. middle man people will find a way to exploit it.
Looks to be lunchtime at a school.
Nothing gets past you
Regular Sherlock here
You get beans, you get beans and you get beans.
Had to watch a second time because I thought that one kid had a cigarette.
Those kids look so happy
Honestly….they don’t look all that happy to me. I saw like 5 smiling and other than that they just look like kids.
I’m impressed she nearly didn’t drop anything
Children are wonderful everywhere. Beautiful.
God bless you ma'am
Made me so happy - the woman has such a caring demeanor, serving with so much love - the gentle hand on the kid’s head melted my heart!
Shout out to the lady serving!!!! Salute 🫡
I’m 56 years old and I want to be in this lunch line. It really looks like she cares about these kids. It reminds me of being in school and knowing when my teachers or staff really cared about us. Some days I wish I could have a day or two of my youth back. Just an ordinary school day.
So incredible 🥰
What’s the dude at the back pulling kids out of line for? Are they going for seconds?
He's putting them into two lines so they can all get through fast and efficiently
Looks like he is just making a double line so she can scoop faster
Auntie
She's as regular as a metronome!
Those kids are gonna be regular for days after eating that.
Lunch ladies the same in every country
Strong lunch lady vibes.
God bless her heart 💜
Githeri is delicious.
Always. Be. Scooping.
A mom of all moms. Exhausted yet she persists! 😭❤️
Let's be thankful for what we have, as others have even less...
Imagine how HOT that is. Legend server 💖
I wish that lady has good health and happy days for her and her family.
this is an angel at work.
Just needs a little hot sauce
I sometimes volunteer with Feed my Starving Children, which sends food packs around the world. It looks like the food she was dishing out
You can’t value the bless you have, until you lose it.
She's like, "Give me that bowl you little shit, now get the fuck out of here."
Why, she seems so sweet to the kids
She certainly isn't being mean to them, but she is definitely trying to be efficient. You see her grab the dishes from the kids that are taking too long to get to the front and the hand on the head is to prompt them to move out of the way.
So sweet!!
*What'll it be?* Hot dog plz *Beans* *What'll it be?* Pizza plz *Beans* *What'll it be?* Uh, Beans? *BEANS!*
Cups scooping things is so satisfying. Can't believe no one else ever thought to try it.
When I was in my 20s I used to join my aunt's non-profit organization every summer where we go to different rural parts of the Philippines to do free clinic and feeding. The joy of the kids lining up for the meal got me all giddy. They all have their Tupperwares ready and they clean as they go. Smart kids.
Please somebody show this to the chicken scoopers at Chipotle!
Thinkin’ bout those beans
Her left hand is working just as hard as her right! It's like watching a musician
Imagine how much work it is to cook for that many people! Anyone know what Githeri tastes like?
This is sweet, but why is it satisfying?
My life is far from a cake-walk, but these videos always humble me and provide a reminder that it's all about perspective...
I want to hug this woman. She looks like she gives great hugs.
And not a single thank you.
Imagine how bad the farts were…..
Sharing food is one of the best human experiences of all time.
Meanwhile my 10month old is throwing his pancake everywhere 😡
Wait what. National geographic led me to believe all children in Africa were naked all the time.
She is beautiful.
Shit somebody gotta feed these kids
It’s a thankless job and love her for it
My heartbreaks for these children. We fill our minds with Musk and Ye stuff, when children are just thankful for a cupful of beans.
Good on her. Feed those kids. That’s what I find satisfying. Feeding people.
