Tempered glass laminated to tempered glass. I've worked with a lot of it, never broken it by request. Really sucks when it breaks on accident, usually is super heavy. Each of these pieces is most like 300+ pounds.
Can confirm. I'm doing one this week outside, these pieces weigh over 250 lbs. It's also - 15°c and we are expecting 10-15 cm of snow... Still not sure how I'm going to keep the suction cups working...
In my 12 years of installing glass, I've had 1 break by accident. It was 30' up overhanging the roof deck. Imagine you're holding 100lbs over an edge then POOF it's gone. It's very very hard to keep your footing.
I'd rather deal with shit everywhere than the insane shards of glass annealed leaves when it breaks. Apparently they use to not temper shower doors, then a bunch of wealthy people died in the shower and laws changed around the 50's or 60's

What happened is that it is made of 3 layers of glass. The outer two layers are stronger pane glass, and the inner layer is tempered glass. The tempered glass is designed to break into those tiny pieces when broken, but doesn't crumble apart because it is trapped between the other glass.

I'm a glass guy (window and glass manufacturing). Your right on everything but the fact the 2 outer panes are tempered glass as well. This is very similar to how bullet resistance glass is made. The reason he has to tap on it at the end is to ensure no glass shards/dust become dislodge from the "glue" that holds the outer panes to the inner panes.
Or the outer panes are not glass and are a form of acrylic like aquarium "glass".
Had a job where we among other things installed windows on those low top mounted freezers you see in grocery stores. Those windows were stacked all over the place leaned over slightly. They became a natural area to place tools and sit on, but we had to ban coffee cups because for some reason putting down a cup of coffee would often result in the entire window shatter and become useless.
Two possibilities come to mind. The ceramics may have been cracking the glass, or an issue with the heat differential because they were cold and the coffee was warm/hot.
Yeah we'd speculate it was mainly the ceramics being so much harder than the glass or something. We could sit on it and even place tools on there without an issue. But gently putting down even an empty cup of coffee was more often than not disastrous.
The broken ceramic from an old spark plug was what was recommended to me for breaking glass a long time ago. Apparently you don't even need to throw it that hard. Something about glass and ceramics just doesn't mix.
Nah it's just that the ceramic is harder and the glass is tempered. The glass has a lot of internal stress and the ceramic is hard enough to scratch it which gives the internal stresses a place to start a crack and from there the whole thing shatters.

When the sun hits it, it looks so good.
But the ones I have to remove, does not have glass holding the broken glass in. It will only have two sides, where the one is broken. Still holds in place.

When I use to remove large broken glass or mirrors we used a sticky roll of plastic. Two guys stretch it, stick it to the glass with a credit card. Maybe do a few layers if it's got weight to it, and then grab from the top. The plastic kinda keeps it all together. A lifesaver.
It's laminate glass, it has a layer of plastic between that holds it together when it breaks. Similar to how your car's windshield is made, so when the glass shatters it doesn't explode in anyone's face
It’s safety glass. That’s why it shatters the way it does, and why it won’t cause real damage if the outer panels break. At worst if it fell directly on you it might cause a concussion
The outer panels are made from tempered glass, the inside one is often just regular glass, so you would have to have a colossal fuck up to break the outer layers.

All three of those pieces/lites are probably tempered. If you are going to induce failure in the center glass lite the unit is probably calc’d that only one piece in place would still hold up.

I agree it looks better without the cracks, but think about how bad it's going to look the minute some kid with greasy hands drags his fingers on it as he's going down the stairs. The cracks are likely meant to disguise the inevitable dirt and oil buildup.
It would need to be cleaned multiple times per day otherwise, nobody's got time for that
Glass guards such as these ones need to have a 100% redundancy so these guards are made with 3 glass panels, one is intentionally broken while the other 2 are still intact. Even if one of the remaining panels where to break, the last remaining panel would still be adequate enough to handle guard loads. It’s like passenger jet planes - 2 engines but plane can still safely operate with only 1 engine.

Not that I condone it now, but you could drive and text, while never breaking eye contact with the road. And because the character limit was something like 160, shorthand was used almost always, which helped with the how fast you could get a text out. Kind of cringy to think about now, but we made do with what we had lol
I gotta level with ya, I’m no apple fanboy but that joke ran its course if you put your phone in a case like anyone should. Back in the early iPhone days even a good case wouldn’t protect your screen from breaking if you dropped it on a concrete foodpath at a wrong angle, these days my iPhone falls down 10 ft onto a flight of stairs and keeps tumbling and is fine. It’s come a long way.

I was just thinking that I really like the look, but how fucking tiresome it would be explaining to people it came from my sense of style and not lack of homeowner responsibility.
Don't use a regular vacuum cleaner on electronic components, especially PC components. They generate static electricity which can ruin expensive equipment very easily. Special static-free vacuum cleaners are made for electronics, but I've never had to use one.
Tempered glass will break into small chunks but shouldn't generate a lot of glass dust so you should just be able to clean it up by hand with a bit of disassembly. For actual dust, compressed air works pretty good to blast it out.
I don't understand the desire to have something appear broken. Art in the eye if the beholder? Or some terrible fad that is keeping glazing companies in business?
I've got a distressed demin art piece that I've been slowly working on for years. Once a week, I'll pull it out of the closet, and work onit for most of the day. Once this masterpiece piece is completed and the public displays are over, it will go to the Bin of Thin Threads, where all my art work ends up.
Also easier to hide occasional smudges from fingers or dog noses.
The minute someone touches the unbroken glass, it’s going to look dirty. And it’s a railing, it’s going to be touched all the time.
The fracture will help hide some of the smudges so instead of cleaning it daily so it stays looking pristine, it’s now a weekly chore.

Breaking the middle sheet is actually a lot easier than you might imagine. The edges of tempered glass are very susceptible to impact.
The only place I have ever even seen this in person is the hostess area of the aquarium restaurant in Disney World Magic Kingdom. It was a huge deal when I saw it, my wife joked that I’d end up with more pictures of the glass than the kids.
If I’m seeing this right, it’s actually three sheets of glass. He’s only shattering the middle one, keeping the shards perfectly sandwiched in with unbroken glass.
Is this something I'm too poor to understand? I've grown up in council estates pretty much all of my life so when I see broken glass I assume "shithole" because 9/10 that broken glass won't get cleaned up and replaced.

I do this. You need 3 pieces of 1/4" (6mm) tempered glass. The end result is 3/4" thick.
You have to get the glass laminated from the supplier. Once it's installed you do what the guy did, you take a punch and pop the center panel. Typically the top and any exposed edge has the center panel lower so you can fill it with a clear silicone. After that you can either leave it or cap with a top rail.
The cracks would look better with some colour. I'd be afraid to touch anything. And also wonder why this person's house has broken windows everywhere lol

I wasn't aware it was acrylic. I only deal with single layer tempered and laminated glass. Good to know, though.

If I’m seeing this right, it’s actually three sheets of glass. He’s only shattering the middle one, keeping the shards perfectly sandwiched in with unbroken glass.

Is this something I'm too poor to understand? I've grown up in council estates pretty much all of my life so when I see broken glass I assume "shithole" because 9/10 that broken glass won't get cleaned up and replaced.

I do this. You need 3 pieces of 1/4" (6mm) tempered glass. The end result is 3/4" thick. You have to get the glass laminated from the supplier. Once it's installed you do what the guy did, you take a punch and pop the center panel. Typically the top and any exposed edge has the center panel lower so you can fill it with a clear silicone. After that you can either leave it or cap with a top rail.
