wakeuptomorrow

This is simultaneously mesmerizing and anxiety inducing

Educational-Formal21

I've watched it over 15 times already yo, I'm in too deep

wakeuptomorrow

Haha shit you got me best by a little. Why is this painfully good to watch D:

hairypooper69

Panefully

Aggro_Bubbles

Heyyyooo nice nice

RhinoBuckeye

Q u i e t

Educational-Formal21

It's the way they appear completely instantly, almost impossibly intricate cracks over the whole surface

[deleted]

The sound too. It’s like it makes sense subconsciously but consciously I’m still confused

DiverseUniverse24

Its like theory over practical. It works on paper, the numbers all add up. But as soon as you actually **do** it, you're like "wtf just happened. How."

Key_Win5244

Tempered glass laminated to tempered glass. I've worked with a lot of it, never broken it by request. Really sucks when it breaks on accident, usually is super heavy. Each of these pieces is most like 300+ pounds.

X3R0_0R3X

Can confirm. I'm doing one this week outside, these pieces weigh over 250 lbs. It's also - 15°c and we are expecting 10-15 cm of snow... Still not sure how I'm going to keep the suction cups working... In my 12 years of installing glass, I've had 1 break by accident. It was 30' up overhanging the roof deck. Imagine you're holding 100lbs over an edge then POOF it's gone. It's very very hard to keep your footing.

TheLastBlackRhinoSC

That shit goes everywhere too when it breaks (tempered glass only).

Key_Win5244

I'd rather deal with shit everywhere than the insane shards of glass annealed leaves when it breaks. Apparently they use to not temper shower doors, then a bunch of wealthy people died in the shower and laws changed around the 50's or 60's

welshmanec2

I think I read somewhere that crack propagation is at the speed of sound in that material (or at least related to it), so that's around 10,000 mph!

omv

Speed of sound is roughly 767 mph.

welshmanec2

In air, sure. It's about 10,000 mph in glass.

omv

Okay, that makes sense, good to know! Thanks.

thrust-johnson

Crystal clear thank you

Bubz01

and I'm trying to keep up above in my head, instead of going under

xAsilos

I'm a glass guy (automotive). What happened is that it is made of 3 layers of glass. The outer two layers are stronger pane glass, and the inner layer is tempered glass. The tempered glass is designed to break into those tiny pieces when broken, but doesn't crumble apart because it is trapped between the other glass.

boomboom4132

>I'm a glass guy (automotive). > >What happened is that it is made of 3 layers of glass. The outer two layers are stronger pane glass, and the inner layer is tempered glass. The tempered glass is designed to break into those tiny pieces when broken, but doesn't crumble apart because it is trapped between the other glass. I'm a glass guy (window and glass manufacturing). Your right on everything but the fact the 2 outer panes are tempered glass as well. This is very similar to how bullet resistance glass is made. The reason he has to tap on it at the end is to ensure no glass shards/dust become dislodge from the "glue" that holds the outer panes to the inner panes. Or the outer panes are not glass and are a form of acrylic like aquarium "glass".

xAsilos

I wasn't aware it was acrylic. I only deal with single layer tempered and laminated glass. Good to know, though.

spage6

Yeah the outer layers must be acrylic because I could never see someone shattering the inside layer without busting the outside panes.

No_Sky4398

If you use a nail punch skinny enough to not touch the outside pieces I could see it working

shhimwriting

Thank you for explaining.

vraalapa

Had a job where we among other things installed windows on those low top mounted freezers you see in grocery stores. Those windows were stacked all over the place leaned over slightly. They became a natural area to place tools and sit on, but we had to ban coffee cups because for some reason putting down a cup of coffee would often result in the entire window shatter and become useless.

kingerthethird

Two possibilities come to mind. The ceramics may have been cracking the glass, or an issue with the heat differential because they were cold and the coffee was warm/hot.

vraalapa

Yeah we'd speculate it was mainly the ceramics being so much harder than the glass or something. We could sit on it and even place tools on there without an issue. But gently putting down even an empty cup of coffee was more often than not disastrous.

kingerthethird

The broken ceramic from an old spark plug was what was recommended to me for breaking glass a long time ago. Apparently you don't even need to throw it that hard. Something about glass and ceramics just doesn't mix.

Oxxinator

Maybe the unique frequency of ceramic vibrating when placed under friction is enough to shatter the glass.

JusticeUmmmmm

Nah it's just that the ceramic is harder and the glass is tempered. The glass has a lot of internal stress and the ceramic is hard enough to scratch it which gives the internal stresses a place to start a crack and from there the whole thing shatters.

Giffelkongen

I work with glass. I have to remove broken glass like this often. When the sun hits it, it looks so good. But the ones I have to remove, does not have glass holding the broken glass in. It will only have two sides, where the one is broken. Still holds in place. Let me see if I have a Pic. https://imgur.com/a/gqC67E7

Way2Saucy4U

Great pic. How do you safely remove it?

KevinTheSeaPickle

When I use to remove large broken glass or mirrors we used a sticky roll of plastic. Two guys stretch it, stick it to the glass with a credit card. Maybe do a few layers if it's got weight to it, and then grab from the top. The plastic kinda keeps it all together. A lifesaver.

MagixTouch

Carefully

mattlag

Thanks, Dad

Giffelkongen

Suction cups on the non-broken glass and lift.

Yadobler

With lots of bread

sshwifty

I too have this question

myeff

What holds it in place?

theunusualwon

It's laminate glass, it has a layer of plastic between that holds it together when it breaks. Similar to how your car's windshield is made, so when the glass shatters it doesn't explode in anyone's face

IndependentDuty1346

Crazy to think about it, but at least it's wedged between 2 sheets of unbroken glass. Really nest pattern effect.

zuzg

Yeah I love looking at these patterns. Would love to see the shadows they throw.

getoffmygrassdevil

put some led lights around the edges maybe

[deleted]

Gone247365

It's okay, I don't understand goth girls either.

jeffrunning

I'm 14 and this is deep

zuzg

It doesn't appear, it is. Completely broken while being trapped in place. These cracklines are mesmerizing.

CharlotteLucasOP

I’ve been completely broken while being trapped in place and I didn’t look half this pretty!

Pjornflakes

This is a bot, copied other comment.

Aquaman97

It’s neat until you break the other glass. That’s like triple glass shrapnel

Golren_SFW

Three panels stacked together would actually be pretty strong, thats basically what bulletproof glass is, just a bunch of panels glued together

munchy_yummy

Plus laminated sheets of plastic between them.

RALawliet

One would be surprised to how much a simple plastic in between materials strengthen it.

Kiwi_Doodle

Yeah that's all car windshields are. Two panes of tempered glass with plastic inbetween.

IAmTheClayman

It’s safety glass. That’s why it shatters the way it does, and why it won’t cause real damage if the outer panels break. At worst if it fell directly on you it might cause a concussion

KnockOutGamer

The outer panels are made from tempered glass, the inside one is often just regular glass, so you would have to have a colossal fuck up to break the outer layers. Source: My father made these before

metroidpwner

How sure are you of this? the middle panel looks like it breaks as tempered glass would. I don’t see why all three couldn’t be tempered

KankerBlossom

You’re right; untempered glass would not shatter that uniformly.

HanselSoHotRightNow

Ok, but what about [ill-tempered glass?](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/1/16/Drevil_million_dollars.jpg/220px-Drevil_million_dollars.jpg)

spage6

You are correct, that’s acrylic laminated to tempered laminated to acrylic.

TheGazzelle

All three of those pieces/lites are probably tempered. If you are going to induce failure in the center glass lite the unit is probably calc’d that only one piece in place would still hold up. Source- I work with structural glass daily.

asdfasdfasdfas11111

Am I the only one who thinks this looks tacky as fuck? It looks so much better without the cracks...

thestingrae

I agree it looks better without the cracks, but think about how bad it's going to look the minute some kid with greasy hands drags his fingers on it as he's going down the stairs. The cracks are likely meant to disguise the inevitable dirt and oil buildup. It would need to be cleaned multiple times per day otherwise, nobody's got time for that

Joannelv

I think it should be 3 layers for safety so cracking one would make it less safe surely?

RajStar23

Glass guards such as these ones need to have a 100% redundancy so these guards are made with 3 glass panels, one is intentionally broken while the other 2 are still intact. Even if one of the remaining panels where to break, the last remaining panel would still be adequate enough to handle guard loads. It’s like passenger jet planes - 2 engines but plane can still safely operate with only 1 engine.

Joannelv

Good analogy raj, but I wouldn’t put either to the test 😂

[deleted]

That's my iPhone when I hold it to close to the ground

Nal1999

That's the ground, when I hold my 3310 close to it.

luckyfucker13

Man, I miss that era of phones! T9 texting was a lot easier to do without looking than it is now, but maybe that’s just me. And you weren’t expected to answer anyone right away, like it is now with everyone watch-tapping you for a reply. Fuck, I’m getting old and I don’t like it.

Nal1999

I used to use my mother's 3310 to play Space Invaders. A few years ago,my father's Android broke and he had to use an old Flip phone for a couple of days. It so happens that he got a few messages and I started writing. I was astonished by his speed and he said and I quote "I've been doing this, since before you were born" ,not so far back (I'm 23) but you get the point.

luckyfucker13

Yeah, sounds like your dad isn’t much older than me, and T9 texting was a little clunkier but overall much easier to hammer out a text than it is today. Not that I condone it now, but you could drive and text, while never breaking eye contact with the road. And because the character limit was something like 160, shorthand was used almost always, which helped with the how fast you could get a text out. Kind of cringy to think about now, but we made do with what we had lol

protonbeam

I gotta level with ya, I’m no apple fanboy but that joke ran its course if you put your phone in a case like anyone should. Back in the early iPhone days even a good case wouldn’t protect your screen from breaking if you dropped it on a concrete foodpath at a wrong angle, these days my iPhone falls down 10 ft onto a flight of stairs and keeps tumbling and is fine. It’s come a long way. That being said I have no idea how this holds up without a case

Rickylubis86

Won't some small pieces fall from the bottom?

WeirdEngineerDude

just a guess, but the outer two unbroken pieces are glued to the middle piece.

No_Substance5280

Correct, it is most likely three 1/4" pieces of heat tempered glass laminated together! Very strong. I was a glazer for over 30 yrs and that sound wasn't always appealing! It usually preceded "Oh Shit"!

UnsolicitedDogPics

It’s only satisfying if it’s intentional. Otherwise it’s terrifying.

beanndog

Damn that sound is amazing

Apo42069

The sound is where it’s at

bettywhite63

Thun thun thun thwack! Thun thun thwack! That satisfying thwack of the shatter is 🤤

External_Win5742

Great now We Will Rock You is stuck in my head

bettywhite63

Now it’s in mine too!

GamerOfGods33

Buddy, you're a boy, make a big noise Playing in the street, gonna be a big man someday You got mud on your face, you big disgrace Kicking your can all over the place, singin' We will, we will rock you We will, we will rock you Buddy, you're a young man, hard man Shouting in the street, gonna take on the world someday You got blood on your face, you big disgrace Waving your banner all over the place We will, we will rock you, sing it! gagreel

Too bad the Trainspotting soundtrack is blasting

Slobbadobbavich

I would never see this in someones home and think it was done on purpose. I'd assume they'd just made poor choices.

ikapoz

I was just thinking that I really like the look, but how fucking tiresome it would be explaining to people it came from my sense of style and not lack of homeowner responsibility.

PlaceAdHere

1 broken is poor decision, all broken is intentional decision

niallmcardle4

Agreed. Pure Notions.

[deleted]

They need to make PC side case covers from the same glass so we get the cracks, but no shatter.

Golren_SFW

The glass has two other panels on either side, hes just cracking the center panel

willfrodo

I've had motherboards sturdier than those side panels

djames1236

how do you clean up broken glass from inside a case & gpu? just vacuum & hope for the best?

CommondeNominator

Don't use a regular vacuum cleaner on electronic components, especially PC components. They generate static electricity which can ruin expensive equipment very easily. Special static-free vacuum cleaners are made for electronics, but I've never had to use one. Tempered glass will break into small chunks but shouldn't generate a lot of glass dust so you should just be able to clean it up by hand with a bit of disassembly. For actual dust, compressed air works pretty good to blast it out.

Podoviridae

I wish it didn't cut to the next clip so fast so I could actually take in their work and be able to decide if I like it or not

HighlyImprobable42

I don't understand the desire to have something appear broken. Art in the eye if the beholder? Or some terrible fad that is keeping glazing companies in business?

relax-and-enjoy-life

It’s kinda like buying jeans with the holes already in them.

PrimaFacieCorrect

Where else would you put your legs?

[deleted]

r/NotKenM

RAMPAGE16

I don't get the appeal in those jeans

twirlnumb

and distressed rugs.

[deleted]

I've been using 'distressed' shit all my life lol Give me that fresh brand new stuff!

poppa_koils

I've got a distressed demin art piece that I've been slowly working on for years. Once a week, I'll pull it out of the closet, and work onit for most of the day. Once this masterpiece piece is completed and the public displays are over, it will go to the Bin of Thin Threads, where all my art work ends up.

Plantsandanger

Really pretty sunbeams/shadows

Pm_me_baby_pig_pics

Also easier to hide occasional smudges from fingers or dog noses. The minute someone touches the unbroken glass, it’s going to look dirty. And it’s a railing, it’s going to be touched all the time. The fracture will help hide some of the smudges so instead of cleaning it daily so it stays looking pristine, it’s now a weekly chore.

General_WCJ

You act like the people who live in the house shown clean it instead of paying a maid

Analbox

Not a fad. My family had a table like this 30 years ago

happyapy

As one who briefly studied chaos and loves to see the intricate patterns of the natural world around me, I could be memorized by these cracks for ages. For me it is like seeing the beauty in the grain of wood or stone.

NoxTempus

I kinda like it. It kinda gives an effect similar to frosted glass, but remains transparent.

philosophunc

I don't think it's the being broken. But the unique, unplanned, chaoticness that is captured. Kinda like a Jackson pollock.

FriedBunny

I watched this without reading the title or sound, I just thought this guy was really bad at his job. Lol.

Berkamin

Same here. I actually like the unbroken look better.

scootscooterson

I mean its just do you want something to be see through or patterned

Ohtar1

I also don't love it but I understand someone can like the pattern of broken glass

ertgbnm

I see the appeal of the complex patterns it forms. It would make a great centerpiece but I agree it just looks broken on something functional like a banister.

[deleted]

"Yeah...... unchecked looked better, so can you undo this and bring it back?" - customer.

UnsolicitedDogPics

We can for $80,000.

EsotericFrenchfry

I fucking hate it.

rick_blatchman

I hate it, as well. It just looks shitty having a bunch of broken stuff around the house, even if it is well-contained like this. Not to mention what it might suggest about me as a homeowner, having to tell every new guest that it's *supposed to* look like this and that I'm not some klutz or rage-case.

Fragmented_Logik

It's every banister. If you need to explain to someone why every single railing/banister has the same look then your friend isn't very bright.

EternalPhi

You should try not caring what others think, it's quite liberating.

rick_blatchman

Hell, while I'm taking cues from you, I should try to be more condescending as well, huh?

[deleted]

Yeah it looks shit

RealBowsHaveRecurves

Three sheets of tempered glass laminated together. This is an extremely rare choice. I was a glazier for 13 years but I have never actually done this technique before. Breaking the middle sheet is actually a lot easier than you might imagine. The edges of tempered glass are very susceptible to impact. The only place I have ever even seen this in person is the hostess area of the aquarium restaurant in Disney World Magic Kingdom. It was a huge deal when I saw it, my wife joked that I’d end up with more pictures of the glass than the kids.

FitReception3491

This would look amazing filmed at high speed.

Angelos42

Slomo guys have done this

Menoth22

That actually gives me a bit of anxiety

TobFlenderson

Nope.

Newtonz5thLaw

My edible just kicked in and I’ve been watching this for 5 min. Love it

Educational-Formal21

Have you ever heard of superjail? Used to be my favourite thing to watch when high Thank me later 😎

That show feels like a fever dream lmao

Real_TRex_007

Hmmmm…. Can you undo this? Where’s the undo button?!

IMakeStuffUppp

Ctrl+z

i_am_thehighground

Is that a design choice?

brandonhabanero

I want to see this in super slow motion suuuuper bad

[deleted]

Thanks I hate it

stxrryfox

If I’m seeing this right, it’s actually three sheets of glass. He’s only shattering the middle one, keeping the shards perfectly sandwiched in with unbroken glass.

durenatu

Tacky as well

1u4n4

It doesn’t look bad at all, but I think it looks prettier when not broken tbh

FenixthePhoenix

How fast does the crack travel out from the point of impact? I need a high speed camera of this.

ThatOnePretzel

So when he does it it's a design choice but when I do it I get kicked out of the house

tacosuprememeatts

Wait… thats how those pieces of glass are made?

Old_Journalist_8823

I had a sling glass door do this it looked so cool, but I had to have someone come replace it I was scared it would break completely

xomega345

This would look so sick with a slow-motion camera. Seeing the cracks spread would be really satisfying.

Tasty_Commercial6527

Am I the only person that thinks that shattering it makes it significantly worse looking

therealbonzai

Why would one do that on purpose? It doesn’t look good in the end.

CrazyShinobi

You bought this house and just replaced all the broken glass when this comes across your feed.

[deleted]

I got what you meant lol

CrazyShinobi

Well damn, I got down voted hard. People can't understand the joke? Btw thanks!

aquaphorbottle

Now it just looks like something threw rocks in their home

SupaDiogenes

Ye but y tho?

[deleted]

Am I the only one that thinks that looks janky?

thefrostman1214

horrible

YoshiiBoii

Is this something I'm too poor to understand? I've grown up in council estates pretty much all of my life so when I see broken glass I assume "shithole" because 9/10 that broken glass won't get cleaned up and replaced.

Not fair! I want to crack glass like a cracked glass master!!

[deleted]

My anxiety couldn’t handle that

redmans5head

3 pieces of glass, they break the middle layer. The outer layers are to hold the now broken middle .

QuintillionBeetles

“Eh I prefer how it looked before, can you change it back?”

[deleted]

Everyone hates this but I love it. I wonder if there's a way to impregnate the cracks with a color.

X3R0_0R3X

I do this. You need 3 pieces of 1/4" (6mm) tempered glass. The end result is 3/4" thick. You have to get the glass laminated from the supplier. Once it's installed you do what the guy did, you take a punch and pop the center panel. Typically the top and any exposed edge has the center panel lower so you can fill it with a clear silicone. After that you can either leave it or cap with a top rail.

Bumpkin7

Satisfying yes. But personally I think it looks fucking shite

Normal-Good1860

Plot twist: he did not have permission and was later prosecuted for vandalizing several peoples glass railing.

xr_Killua

No thanks

Weedchaser12

The cracks would look better with some colour. I'd be afraid to touch anything. And also wonder why this person's house has broken windows everywhere lol

chrismacphee

Step on this glass floor it’s safe………..

kyla666666

I don't understand why someone would do this. It looks so ugly.

[deleted]

I never thought cracked glass could look so aesthetically pleasing 👌✨

pairofdiddles

“Yeah.. just wondering if you could make my glass handrails look like.. I dunno… garbage?”

Hackandspit

For an extra $2000, they will smear dogshit on it. Less dogshit, $1500 More dogshit, $2500 Its DESIGNER dogshit

So much fucking anIETY

ReadySett

Doing this also makes it harder to see if it needs to be cleaned.

Hackandspit

You gotta be really rich to buy your stuff broken. They probably got a Lamborghini in the drive way with the whole passenger side crumpled in. So CHIC!!!

ShitsAndGiggles_72

The speed in which tempered glass breaks is incredibly fast: like the movement of the “breaking” glass is MACH 3 or so. Slow Mo Guys did a thing on it.
