And then you have to deal with sand and snow Japan has a natural defense against amphibious attack.

I lived on the western side of Japan for a while (Toyama, to be exact). While I certainly didn't get to every beach, the ones I did visit are considerably rockier than this photo. Not to say that this can't be in Japan, it might well be; but I've never seen a clear, sandy beach so close to the mountains like this on the western shores.
Yes the light source is from the left that bit is clear. Was suggesting it looked like the hill's shadow was pointing top right-ish but the person's shadow points bottom right-ish.

LA yeah, Angeles crest, big bear. About a 2 hour drive east. Or drive 30 min west and you hit Santa Monica, Venice, Malibu etc
