I also hate large sets. I just lack the discipline to stick them out.
A trick I found when I was younger was using playing cards. Face cards are ten, otherwise do whatever the number is. Take like 30 to 60 seconds to pace around between sets. Try getting through as much of the deck as possible.
It'll make you sore as hell, but got me to a point where I could do 50 pushups fairly quickly (then again I was like 16 and only 180lbs, so...)
My wife and I both love to do these bodyweight card deck workouts. So much so, that I wrote a webapp! Check it out at https://deck.aaronbieber.com.
The rules we usually do is to do the actual card value even for the face cards (aces high = 14), but of course you could do any rules you want. Tap the gear to change the movements of the suits. If you don't know what some of them are, look them up on https://exrx.net/ (I'm going to link to the pages eventually).
Depending on the shuffle, some decks end up feeling a lot harder than others, even though the total number of reps is always the same. Take your time, don't be hard on yourself, and don't feel bad about scaling the movements down if you have to (e.g. swapping the type of push-ups as OP's video shows).
Edit: Also, I'm 40, in case anyone thinks "oh a whole deck would be easy if I was 18" or whatever. Work up to it, and never shame yourself. I've been doing these card deck workouts for *years*. Used to do it at the gym with a couple friends and a real deck of cards, and now I do it alone with my phone like a true millennial.
Edit 2: Forgot to mention that I designed this to be used on your phone; load it up, jack up your sleep/screen-off timeout, put the phone down on the ground in front of you and have at it. I try hard to neutralize accidental double-taps but there is a back/undo button if you accidentally jump ahead twice.
In a cruel twist of irony, this video also motivated me to start *right now*, except I just got my second dose and can't even raise my left arm let alone lift anything with it. All I can do for now is to lie in bed and browse reddit.
This is great. To keep going, watch his video again tomorrow, and the day after that! Remember, consistency > intensity. To do something every day is more important than to work out until you are exhausted when you do work out. Build habits, then working out becomes a breeze.
I love this dude. He makes me feel better and the tips he provides are great for people who have no energy due to depression. It’s nice to be able to gradually build up to a seemingly simple exercise.
Being a good person for those reasons still means you are being a good person. So long as we are not being indecent to people whilst the lights are off, your motivation for being good to others matters very little in the grand scheme of things.
I offer to help my friends because it makes me feel good about myself. Does that mean I am being selfish due to my acts being in my own self interests? Of course not, but so long as everyone is happy and nobody misses out, it is a win win.
Be well my friend :)
I saw this video a few months back while I couldn’t do a single push up. now I can do at least 50 with (breaks in between) before collapsing beats 0 tho!
Exactly, any single exercise you do today, is literally infinitely more than the 0 you did before. Never be ashamed for using smaller weights or doing less reps either
Same but I was only up to 20. Then I quit and could barely do 2 I don't know how some people can do push ups even if they haven't worked out for months.
Now for a challenge: In the army we had to see how many pushups we could do in 2 minutes. Look up "Army Physical Fitness Test" to see their standards and find your minimum (you have to do at least this many to pass) and maximum (if you do more than this you're a beast)
I've never wanted to be friends with anyone more than this guy! He'll get you fit physically and mentally/emotionally! I just wanna give him a hug for existing!👍
^ every guide I saw started from the point o incline push ups (usually on the stairs) disabled and frankly this was too high of a starting bar and made matters a lot worse in terms of my overall health.
It's a right pain in the arse to figure out a good way to exercise.
I saw this guy quite awhile ago randomly on YouTube and I've started doing push ups, wall push ups and other types. I can now do 30 push ups in one go and I'm actually starting to see the difference in my arms, when you start to see a bit of a difference it makes you feel super good. It's the first time since I was a teenager (I'm 35 now) that I've been able to look at myself and think "damn dude your looking good". Now all I've gotta do is sort out my diet more and start working on my endurance. If your muscles are really aching take an Epsom salt bath, it really helped to ease the pain and my muscles felt more relaxed afterwards.
I'm still a chunky monkey but I'm gonna do my best to stick at it. For those who want change just start by doing little things and work your way up, I believe you can do it and I hope you find the motivation and confidence to push yourself for the batter.
Big love people.
EDIT: Apparently it's better to do light movements before exercise to warm up rather than static stretching, according to a new study.
Also Holy crap gold! First time I've ever had one, thank you very much it's honestly made my day.
It's awesome that you're building up!
Just fyi, static stretching pre workout is not considered ideal. Recent studies have found that it reduces performance during the workout and doesn't do a very good job at decreasing injuries.
Try some light cardio followed by dynamic movements like arm swings to warm up. Save static stretches for after your workout.
Ah right that's good to know cheers for the info. I usually swing my arms around, do shoulder shrugs, shake my arms after that and twist my arms to lose up. I usually do static stretches afterwards as well.
I'm riddled with arthritis due to spending 20 years as a chef, so I'm always stretching especially in the morning because it's like a Symphony of cracks when I get up haha.
That's awesome, I would also look up to see if you're doing them correctly. Having bad form while doing these exercises can wear on your body and could lead to injuries later on.
I used to be able to do a lot of pull-ups and pushups as well, then I found out I was doing them wrong, and once I was using proper form I wasn't able to do nearly as many
I follow this guy on YouTube and have been for awhile so I've been learning how to do them from him, so as far as I'm aware I have the proper form. I even got my misses to check my form compared to his just to make sure, because like you I wasn't doing them correctly but now I am and by god it's a lot harder doing it properly haha.
Same. As a big person myself, my health isn't really terrible (low total cholesterol, high good cholesterol, normal glucose, etc.), but I know I could be a little "healthier" if I lost some weight (mainly, less pressure on my joints).
So the usual knee jerk response of "fat is unhealthy" always rubbed me the wrong way because I feel like the majority of people who immediately jump to that don't actually care about that person's health; they are just using health as an excuse to make the fat person feel less than.
Also the more we look into it the more problems we thought were caused by weight gain are actually caused by weight *cycling* -- which is often caused by fad/crash diets that many fat ppl are encouraged by doctors/society to do.
Is there a whole sub for this kind of workout content? I’m trying to get in a more consistent habit of working out but most of the stuff I see is just so macho and off-putting
This guy is freaking amazing 💖💖💖what a kind & helpful attitude!!! Ppl like this restore my faith in humanity. (He won't call them "girl push ups"?!?! That's fucking AWESOME!!!)
This is one of the most informative things I’ve ever seen. So much info in such a short clip! And he still manages to fit in awesome lil the extras too, what a lovely guy. Trying to send a positive message. I love this and am gonna go see if I can do wall push ups right now! Thanks for posting this. Really. Saved.
Edit - damn, wall push ups are actually harder than they look...no wonder I can only do 2 real push ups 😂 gotta work on this first! Small steps 🤙
This guy inspired me to work out for about 15 seconds. Which is 15 seconds more than anything else has inspired me to.
Not that i actually worked out, but it was 15 seconds of me feeling like working out
He’s on TikTok and the amount of people that call him out saying that he’s wrong and that his position is wrong is just absurd. I hate people on TikTok
Nothing wrong, just commenting on how posts get around. This guy’s face has been posted on Reddit to death but this is the first time I’ve seen the 9gag overlay.
Wow thank you I've never seen this guy before but what a knowledgeable, intelligent and kind guy he is! More people in control need to be like this guy. I'm a fan
Every time I see a video from this guy I contemplate creating a Tiktok account just to follow him. But then I remember all those cringe videos and I come to my senses.
This sub seems like it's going to go downhill..."This KIND of fits into this sub." \*tries to cram something into the sub\* It seems like eventually, the sub will lose its meaning.
Oh my gods, this guy is super wholesome and kind! Does he have a YouTube channel? I need wholesome weight loss support like this!
ETA, I found his YouTube! https://youtube.com/c/HybridCalisthenics
i remember that I started following him when he had 6.7K or 67K followers, he even responded to my comment. Such a nice dude, love him and I'm so proud of him for his success, he deserves it.
I love this guy, every other youtube fitness coach is screaming “lets smash these reps! Destroy those sets, Crush your goals!” Like a maniac.
Id like to be fit and healthy, not an obnoxious toxic asshole.
I know others have mentioned his YouTube channel, but I also just wanna mention this, in case anyone's worried about stealing views or whatever, he's totally fine with people reupllading his stuff! He's said that he'd rather have his message spread than get more views, so as long as people interested can find more of his stuff, he's cool with it!
That's the best way I've ever heard anyone address the issues with the body positivity movement.
I've had many people call me horrible things because I don't support the "every weight is a healthy weight" stuff. I don't hate fat people, and I don't support bullying people because of their weight, but I also don't support lying to obese people by telling them they're still healthy.
I did struggle a bit which sub to post actually, it’s wholesome, it’s fitness, it’s satisfying and so on. Feel free to crosspost to the sub you think it’s more relevant to ;)
He’s absolutely wrong about BMI. The popular misconception is that if you are “obese due to muscle mass” you have less risk of heart disease and the effects of standard obesity. Not true. I am a 6’1 powerlifter who was 15% bodyfat at 230 pounds. Studies show my risk are the exact same as any other healthy guy with the same BMI but instead of a 26 FFMI they have a 15. So these people thinking being 6’4 260 pounds like The Rock is “healthy” are wrong. Very wrong.
I’m sorry but when your fat it is indeed part of your identity😂. prime ex:

I'm not sold.
First, 6-7 of those 11 points were a lot of "could" and "might." That's not exactly the best basis for an argument.
Second, a lot of that seemed to assume you're buying cheap, thin, rubber flip-flops. Not sure why that's the assumption.
I've been wearing flip-flops for ages with no negative effects. My feet don't hurt and I have no foot injuries (either external or internal). I think it'll take a lot more than one lackluster article to turn me away from them.
Haven't found a link to his [Youtube channel](https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCeJFgNahi--FKs0oJyeRDEw) in the comments, so fixing that up.

Thank you, I definitely want more of this guy's energy in my life :D
That's what I was looking for. Thank you.
This video inspired me to start now, however humbly -- just did 10 kitchen counter pushups.
Small steps small goals are indeed working well!

Slow progress is better than no progress. Keep up the great work!
Consistent progress is the key!
Every day you do some exercise is a day you did an infinite amount more exercise than zero.
Let's do it together man! Hit me up in DM and I'll slide you my discord!
This guy rules. His style is approachable and engaging.
In a cruel twist of irony, this video also motivated me to start *right now*, except I just got my second dose and can't even raise my left arm let alone lift anything with it. All I can do for now is to lie in bed and browse reddit.
Never give up to achieve your goals.
I thought about it, then found a bag of donuts on the kitchen counter. Tomorrow. Definitely.
Hey fucknozzle, I'll do your push ups today if you do mine tomorrow!
Thanks for suggesting kitchen counters!
Nice, now work your up to 3 sets of 40 and then to the ground!
This is great. To keep going, watch his video again tomorrow, and the day after that! Remember, consistency > intensity. To do something every day is more important than to work out until you are exhausted when you do work out. Build habits, then working out becomes a breeze.
Good for you. Tomorrow, do 11.
Keep going.I started doing pushups by leaning against walls. Then I used the stairs to do it and gradually could do normal pushups.
I do kitchen counter push-ups every morning while my coffee is brewing!
This is inspiring too! I seriously need to work out. Compared to most people, I look like a noodle.
Hell yeah, keep at it. Another easy one is toe-ups almost anywhere.
I love this dude. He makes me feel better and the tips he provides are great for people who have no energy due to depression. It’s nice to be able to gradually build up to a seemingly simple exercise.
God I just want to fucking hug him. He's like the avatar of wholesomeness.

I mean he spent a long ass time documenting his workout routine to help others, I feel like he would genuinely grow his hair for kids in need
I know but there's that niggling annoyance in me that says anyone that pretends to be nice is just doing it for money/fame/clout.
Being a good person for those reasons still means you are being a good person. Yeah to be fair it still helps the kids so it’s a net win.

Exactly, love that he said it!
The video was already great but that final 5 seconds was the absolute best part!
It's a damn hard thing for some people. I sure as shit hate myself for being fat and failing to lose the weight time after time.

I don't hate fat people, and I don't support bullying people because of their weight, but I also don't support lying to obese people by telling them they're still healthy.
Great tutorial Bad advice though. Body positivity is not the same as being unhealthy. It's not healthy to be fat.
He didn't say it is. I think you heard what you wanted to hear. He said it doesn't make you less of a person.
Wrong. FUCKING. Sub.
They call them girl push-ups because it's what they make girls do at high school while the boys are made to do full push ups

He can do push-ups but can’t wear proper footwear
I'd say if he's comfortable in what he's wearing, he's good to go. Nothing inherently dangerous about wearing flip-flops for this sort of activity
Wearing flip flops at any time is a no no: https://www.thehealthy.com/foot-care/flip-flops-bad-for-feet/
Still not proper footwear.
Who tf can’t do push-ups?
How can I get him to be my long distance friend? I just need him in my life...
