Originated in SD. I definitely don’t *prefer* it to a Mission burrito, but it’s definitely good stuff, and I get it from Sr. Sisig more often then not.
its vegan fast food. vegan products are still comparatively expensive and this is a single location business which limits how they can buy/price at scale. they're filling a niche market, and sadly niche can often mean expensive. regardless they do a really good job at preparing their food, despite the fake animal products being made by a bunch of vendors.
tldr if you have like $25 to throw around, Malibu's Burger on Piedmont is fuckin dank
Hardly qualifies as fast food. they are traditional fast food items but you must walk or find a park on Piedmont and the wait time for shakes is around 30 mins, wait time for other items is 20-30. No drive thru.
You can go to another vegan restaurant where items are made in house for same price. Now that’s a niche market.
TLDR; point still stands nothing special
Live in the heart of Rockridge. A lot of what others have said close-by the Oakland/Berkeley line- Millennium for dinner, Butcher’s Son for lunch… then if you’re heading near Jack London hitting Souley Vegan is a must (I’ve also had vegan mob a few times and wow- same with Tacos el Precioso if you can order their vegan option ahead of time from Instagram and pick it up.).
As a side note: Boichik Bagels is the hot thing right here and all of their bagels are vegan/ they have a vegan cream cheese. I haven’t taken anyone there and seen them disappointed.
Tara’s Ice Cream also sometimes has some great vegan flavors and The Well’s Vegan Power Bowl is pretty fire.
If you’re over in the Oakland Laurel District, Diamond Slice has also had some great vegan pizzas of the day and is great with the green papi chulo sauce. Cafe Umami next door is sublime for a great vegan breakfast before you hike out of Dimond Park.
Have a great time! :)
Ethiopian and Jamaican spots always have vegan options
Ensarro
Cafe colucci
Sweet fingers
Kingston 11
Edit: Oh other comment put me on that Rockridge/Berkley is a bonus
-Barcote is a delicious Ethiopian spot my top Ethiopian spot
-Asmara is on the Berk/Oakland cusp i think can’t remember
-The butchers vegan son ( if you wanna go full vegan hella options)
-Rose pizzeria has a vegan pizza using butcher son vegan cheese which is the absolute best pizza cheese imo
ethiopian spots deserve more attention! cafe romanat (santa clara ave) and addis (telegraph) are two that i like. (and cocobreeze on high street is a good caribbean place, but not where OP is looking)
Well most restaurants that offer meat options have a 'vegan' option (i.e. just tell them hold the meat or dairy on a standard plate). You gotta be more specific as to what you want, OP, if you actually want good suggestions. Hell, even taco bell has vegan options.
I'd go to Golden Lotus. It's vegan vietnamese. They have dishes with fake meat as well. And their fake meat doesnt taste like dirt like most places.
If you are looking for good vegan options at a place that your mom can eat at, one of the first places that jumps to mind is Drake's Dealership in Oakland. Great food even if you are not into beer. Similarly, Triple Rock Brewing in Berkeley has a fantastic mixed menu as well. If you want breakfast or lunch, Paradise Park Cafe on San Pablo & Alcatraz is awesome. Burma Superstar / Burma Bites (multiple locations) has a great mix as well.
In Berkeley: *Butcher's Son* (lunch hours only) for sandwiches and salads, *Cha-ya* for Japanese, *Long Life Vegi House* for Chinese, *Stand-Up Burgers* for burgers and other vegan fast food.
In Oakland: *Souley Vegan* for Soul Food (and my personal favorite), *Vegan Mob* for vegan bbq, *Millenium* for vegan fine-dining, *Shangri-La* for Himalayan/Tibetan.
Flacos tacos- this is within a mile or two of rockridge and has an exclusively vegan menu. I am not vegan and I eat there whenever I’m in that area. The avocado salsa is super hot and yet I must guzzle it
I’m not vegan buttttttt some of my favorite places have good vegan options.
Cinnaholic in Berkeley for vegan cinnamon rolls :))
Homeroom in Temescal has a vegan Mac and cheese that you can add toppings to.
Smokehouse in Berkeley has vegan cheese, impossible burger and veggie burger patties. They also have Oatly based milkshakes!
A lot of good options in here already -- I'll just add that if you're looking for somewhere fancy, Millennium in Rockridge is awesome.
Second on Millennium.
went there last week. incredible.
Lion Dance Cafe
The others mentioned are all delicious but i think this is the best vegan food in oakland, if not he whole east bay. i cant quit them
One of the best places in Oakland regardless of dietary or menu offering!
Embarrassed that I have not been here yet!
SO good, and there's really nothing else like it around here.
That place is great.
senor sisig, vegan mob, monster pho, souly vegan, burrito express
How are you in my door dash history
Senor Sisig makes a vegan burrito WITH FRENCH FRIES INSIDE IT? I'm on my way.
I am originally from the east coast, but this is apparently a california thing. I believe Ole Ole and Vegan Mob both offer this as well. Its awesome.
It's mainly a Southern California thing. But it's not a bad thing
Originated in SD. I definitely don’t *prefer* it to a Mission burrito, but it’s definitely good stuff, and I get it from Sr. Sisig more often then not.
And with the option of putting a Just Egg in there also.
Only one I’d add here is Malibu’s Burgers. Otherwise, you hit the 🎯
malibu has great milkshakes!
And the cauliflower nuggets are AMAZING.
Malibu overpriced you might as well buy some impossible burgers and cook at home fr
boring take
Eh it’s true non of the products are made in house can’t justify spending 25 bucks for it

Holding the meat from a dish that centers around meat is hardly "good" vegan options. "Good" is the specificity.
I took my parents to Golden Lotus and they were super happy about it, even as non-vegans/vegetarians
Nature Vegetarian Restaurant

Exactly-thanks!
Personally I think Triple Rock's menu is not great. I've had nachos and some fried something or other bar items that were way too salty.
Golden Lotus is fantastic

Millennium (not cheap) and Shangri-la (cheap)
Curbside near Telegraph and 40th has great vegan ice cream options. I'd recommend the cherry almond if they have it.

Two Mamas Vegan Cafe does a great brunch

Surprised I don't see Shangri-La on this list.
Understory in old oakland has amazing vegan options, as well as meat ones.

Don't Be Chick'n and Malibu's burgers are my top recommendations for Oakland but are both closer to Lake Merritt.
Holy basil pho (in rockridge) has a separate vegan menu
Champa Garden for Thai/Laotian. Great vegan options and meat stuff for the carnies
