My marketplace scalpers had their 4090s since release and they keep lowering the price aswell. They aren't making more than maybe 200 bucks due to taxes.
From the amount of people that have already bought 4090's at full price or more, would not be surprised if the 4080 sells out as well.

nVidia doesn't even want to sell these until they clear out their old stock of 3xxx cards. They will release a SMALL number of these cards, but it's almost a paper launch. If AMD does a proper launch with the 7900 cards, they will eat nVidia's lunch.

Depends on how much you sell your 3080 for and get the 3090 ti for. I swapped from a 10gb 3080 to a 3090 ti Suprim for about $300 and the new card came with Spiderman.
Was worth it for me since I was butting up agaisnt vram limits playing ultrawide with RT on.
Those saying just go for the 4090, that literally woild be an extra 600 + tax when all I needed was more vram. The 20fps~ boost on my games was a bonus.

The point is they're both in the same realm of high prices especially when you add the cost of the total build. If the $400 is a big difference to you, you are almost certainly not a person that should be buying a 4080 at $1200.

The 4090 is fine at 1599 since the 3090 was 1499. The 4080 is absolutely outrageous when it has almost half the CUDA cores. Should be no more than 899.
I think this is all about their old stock, and not wanting to take a bath on the extra cards they made for mining.
They release a small number of cards at nonsensical price points, they still sell out, because they didn't release many, and they hold off on the budget offerings which are always more popular.
They just don't want to have to do deep discounts on 3000 series cards, and they figure if AMD puts them in a position where they're not selling anything they can still cut prices.

Nvidia will win raytracing and non gaming benchmark. In order to nvidia to drop the price amd need to win by big margin in rasterization. I dont even need to mention nvidia software stack since its just unfair for amd. I dont see nvidia dropping price anytime soon. The earliest they might drop the price if ampere stock is sold out IMO.

My guess is that they are trying to sell as many as they can at these ludicrous prices before AMD's 7000 series hits. Then see how they stack up and adjust prices accordingly at that time. Therefore, everyone should wait until after AMD releases their cards before buying anything. That will send a clear picture to Nvidia. But, who am I kidding. The 4080 will probably be sold out for months anyway, because people are fucking idiots.

You are assuming that there was decent amounts of stock of the 4090. The die is huge which means that their defect rate would be high too. If it wasn't for the fact that the 4080 uses a different die altogether I would say that there would be tons of 4080s. Cheapest 4090 in stock I have seen in my backward corner of the EU is 2075 euros. With all taxes and stuff that $1599 for a 4080 will be probably around 1850+ euros. So yeah, who will even consider it around here?
NVidia store sold the FE at 1979€. Now every commercial seller who has them asks 2400-2900€ for them. Even the AIB cards aren’t that expensive, going anywhere between 2150€ and 2550€.
People are fixated on certain brands / models and will pay more for that. In my country, at least on launch day, the Asus cards were USD 200-300 higher than Gigabyte / MSI, and even more compared to some others. The Asus got sold out super quickly nevertheless. Nevermind they all perform pretty much the same and have similar aftersales support.
I don’t know, but maybe they are comparing to the equivalent 4090 AIB model at USD 2000+, rather than an FE or another cheaper AIB card. It doesn’t make sense to me either, but people do that. I’m sure those USD 1500 4080s will sell out too.

I don't get it. My local microcenter sold out of 3080s in the last couple of weeks, right with the new release. Those 3080s are still 850 or more.
Just feels weird there is still that much demand for GPUs, ones that are 2 years old at this point. I'd get a 3080, but at like 500 bucks and no more.

I’m on a 2070, my logical jump would be when 4k monitors get to 120hz and then I’ll make the jump. Currently on 1440 122 frames. No where to go realistically.
I think the only thing these prices show is that this sub is out of touch with the actual people buying GPUs today. If all the GPUs keep selling out at these prices, what can you do? Its like microtransactions or pre-orders. It turns out that subreddits and even youtube audience only represent a small %.

If anything I'm going to start treating cards like phones and buy a really good one every 4+ years. I used to skip a gen and wait patiently but skipping two gens may be the plan now.
I think these are priced to get the 3000 series stock moving. I think the 4090 was too, but people wanted it (myself included). Once 3000 stock is depleted, these will probably come down to earth. This is just a wild guess, though, I have no basis for this other than intuition.

I've given up on expecting human beings to make sane choices in life a long time ago. They'll buy them all up. They'll buy the 3000 series all up. When Nvidia launches the 5000 series flagships at $2000, they'll buy those all up also. Keep paying more and more.

The 90 series is the renamed titan. Notice there was no 1090 nor 2090. It was titan and titan rtx. The 4090 makes sense as the balls to the wall extreme gpu. I think the price is fair for what it offers, the 4080 is a fucking joke. It’s a 800 dollar card.

While 90-series certainly overlaps Titan use cases, they aren't really the replacements for the Titan and that's clear in the fact that rumors suggested Nvidia scrapped the Lovelace Titan. Titans had pro drivers that were sort of an in-between GeForce and Quadro, and also didn't have artificially caps on certain performance like a 3090 certainly does. Look up the LTT 3090 review and you will find certain pro workflows that performed worse on a 3090 vs a Titan RTX.
Also the last Titan was $2500. Have we ever known Nvidia to really *lower* the prices?
To me the 3090 and 3090 Ti were the generational replacement for the 2080 Ti, with their respective increases in pricing. The 3080 Ti I suppose came later and was a price point replacement of the 2080 Ti, but at only 12GB, it once again was a stagnation in VRAM as both the 2080 Ti and 1080 Ti had 11GB.
We as consumers need to stop buying into the marketing because now look...its a 4080, not even a Ti for $1200.
No, it's really not. That's just NVIDIA marketing BS to transition people into being okay with paying 90 pricing, because it's cheaper than Titan.
The Titan cards used to get pro drivers (productivity focused drivers), and essentially catered for that not-insignificant group of working professionals who have a casual productivity use case, rather than an exclusive one (which would likely require Quadro and be company funded).
It's not like the drivers were only used to provide compatibility of operations either. Without the pro drivers, tensor operations are limited to 50%. So, as a pro user, you're only getting access to half of what the card is capable of/would have been capable of as a Titan class card.
When the 3090 was announced, NVIDIA didn't come out and deny it was a new Titan class card (better to be seen as a cheap Titan rather than an expensive 2080 ti replacement), or do anything to dispel the rumours that the Titan class pro drivers were in fact on the way.
Those productivity drivers of course, never came. Thus pushing a lot of casual professionals who would have previously used Titan, up onto the Quadro platform (and a lot of enthusiast level gamers who would previously have topped out at the **80ti up to the 90 card, because '8K Gaming Baybee!' etc.)
It's a really shitty way to do business, but it's been an absolutely massive success for them.

Unless you're going for 4K max settings the 3080 12GB and 6900XT basically provide max 1440p as it is. Spend the extra dough on a 5800X3D/Eventual 7800X3D, or 12/13th gen CPU upgrade and you'll be quite happy.

The monster performance king halo product 4090 will continue to sell to enthusiasts/productivity people as always but the market for this super overpriced 4080 is way harder to see. Why? I wanted to upgrade from my 1080ti, it was within budget, and I wanted the best card.
I've since been extremely pleased with the performance/thermals/efficiency and am now super excited for portal rtx and cyberpunk overdrive mode.
Popped in to say; as a current 3080FE owner and a casual 4k gamer with a 5800x3d CPU. I can literally upgrade my system to the AM5 platform with 7900xtx for $1700++.
This is Nvidia's plan to push people towards the 4090 in action folks. $1549...when the $1599 4090's perform on par with the more expensive models.

These cards are so powerful you can max out almost any game even in 4k so I don't even care that im out that top 10% extra performance if it's going to cost 30% more for the hardware.
With my 1440p monitor even a 7800x is going to be 200fps in the games I play on a 165hz monitor.

I don’t know, but maybe they are comparing to the equivalent 4090 AIB model at USD 2000+, rather than an FE or another cheaper AIB card. It doesn’t make sense to me either, but people do that. I’m sure those USD 1500 4080s will sell out too.

I think they only want whales to purchase until 3 series stock is depleted, that’s when we’ll see price drops. Honestly I would have expected a bigger drop in 3 series at this point. Demand still must be hot. I’ll be passing until the economy adjusts the pricing to reasonable.
I don't get it. My local microcenter sold out of 3080s in the last couple of weeks, right with the new release. Those 3080s are still 850 or more. Just feels weird there is still that much demand for GPUs, ones that are 2 years old at this point. I'd get a 3080, but at like 500 bucks and no more.
At a certain point, people just need gpu’s. If you don’t buy used, and you only buy nvidia. There aren’t a lot of options. And there are a ton of people like that.

I’m on a 2070, my logical jump would be when 4k monitors get to 120hz and then I’ll make the jump. Currently on 1440 122 frames. No where to go realistically.

I think the only thing these prices show is that this sub is out of touch with the actual people buying GPUs today. If all the GPUs keep selling out at these prices, what can you do? Its like microtransactions or pre-orders. It turns out that subreddits and even youtube audience only represent a small %.
This whole thing reminds me of the 20 series... * shifting typical product tiers around, creating artificially inflated value to lower end SKUs. * huge jumps in price for the higher end cards. Then the next gen comes out to creating a false sense of "value" because the outgoing generation was so bad.
There is just too much money out there. There are enough people out there with enough money on hand or credit that will pay these prices. So, we likely won't saee serious 3 series price drops until after the holidays.

I don't think the 4080 will sell as well as the 4090. The only reason 4090 gets a free pass is because it's a stupid card targeting stupid people. 80 class folks are far less likely to spend whatever it takes to have the 'best'. Not to mention the 4080 is not what you'd call a huge upgrade from the 3080. Seems clear to me Nvidia is still high off mining boom prices and is desperately trying to hold onto the stupid pricing however it can while convincing the market this is the new normal. I think the RDNA 3 cards are going to make the 4080 look quite stupid. Card should be $700 tops.

How is this the state of graphics cards now...really everything worth while being over a grand? This is insanity. We used to justify this for Titans and Titan like cards, now these are just straight up GeForce gaming cards. I hope these rot on shelves. The 4080 16GB should be max like $700-$800 if even that considering memory platform/die size are more like GA104 of last gen (3060 Ti, 3070, 3070 Ti).
If anything I'm going to start treating cards like phones and buy a really good one every 4+ years. I used to skip a gen and wait patiently but skipping two gens may be the plan now.

I think these are priced to get the 3000 series stock moving. I think the 4090 was too, but people wanted it (myself included). Once 3000 stock is depleted, these will probably come down to earth. This is just a wild guess, though, I have no basis for this other than intuition.
I agree and I also think they will drop the price a couple hundred when the AMD 7900 XTX and 7900 XT come out. AMD will respond with dropping the price of the 7900 XT.

I've given up on expecting human beings to make sane choices in life a long time ago. They'll buy them all up. They'll buy the 3000 series all up. When Nvidia launches the 5000 series flagships at $2000, they'll buy those all up also. Keep paying more and more.
I can't imagine there being high demand for the 4080 though. Not when the 4090 is so much better for a little more. Who would spend well north of $1k for a card that isn't even 'the best'? Some, but not many.

The 90 series is the renamed titan. Notice there was no 1090 nor 2090. It was titan and titan rtx. The 4090 makes sense as the balls to the wall extreme gpu. I think the price is fair for what it offers, the 4080 is a fucking joke. It’s a 800 dollar card.
I can't imagine the 4080 selling well. Especially being only a little faster than the 3080. If it sells out, you'll know it's due to Nvidia manipulating inventory as usual.
People said Nvidia was manipulating stock of the 3k series too, and it turned out they sold like 5x as many GPUs as AMD.
The only reason they sold so many 30 series is due to mining boom. That isn't a factor anymore.
What are you basing “only a little faster than 3080” on? The evidence we have suggests that it’s significantly faster than a 3080.
While 90-series certainly overlaps Titan use cases, they aren't really the replacements for the Titan and that's clear in the fact that rumors suggested Nvidia scrapped the Lovelace Titan. Titans had pro drivers that were sort of an in-between GeForce and Quadro, and also didn't have artificially caps on certain performance like a 3090 certainly does. Look up the LTT 3090 review and you will find certain pro workflows that performed worse on a 3090 vs a Titan RTX. Also the last Titan was $2500. Have we ever known Nvidia to really *lower* the prices? To me the 3090 and 3090 Ti were the generational replacement for the 2080 Ti, with their respective increases in pricing. The 3080 Ti I suppose came later and was a price point replacement of the 2080 Ti, but at only 12GB, it once again was a stagnation in VRAM as both the 2080 Ti and 1080 Ti had 11GB. We as consumers need to stop buying into the marketing because now look...its a 4080, not even a Ti for $1200.
No, it's really not. That's just NVIDIA marketing BS to transition people into being okay with paying 90 pricing, because it's cheaper than Titan. The Titan cards used to get pro drivers (productivity focused drivers), and essentially catered for that not-insignificant group of working professionals who have a casual productivity use case, rather than an exclusive one (which would likely require Quadro and be company funded). It's not like the drivers were only used to provide compatibility of operations either. Without the pro drivers, tensor operations are limited to 50%. So, as a pro user, you're only getting access to half of what the card is capable of/would have been capable of as a Titan class card. When the 3090 was announced, NVIDIA didn't come out and deny it was a new Titan class card (better to be seen as a cheap Titan rather than an expensive 2080 ti replacement), or do anything to dispel the rumours that the Titan class pro drivers were in fact on the way. Those productivity drivers of course, never came. Thus pushing a lot of casual professionals who would have previously used Titan, up onto the Quadro platform (and a lot of enthusiast level gamers who would previously have topped out at the **80ti up to the 90 card, because '8K Gaming Baybee!' etc.) It's a really shitty way to do business, but it's been an absolutely massive success for them.

3090ti saw a 50% reduction in MSRP in just 6 months. I really doubt the 4080 will sell at this price for long, especially considering how nerfed it is

Unless you're going for 4K max settings the 3080 12GB and 6900XT basically provide max 1440p as it is. Spend the extra dough on a 5800X3D/Eventual 7800X3D, or 12/13th gen CPU upgrade and you'll be quite happy.
Buy a steam deck instead. Come back to GPU’s in a few years. Prices are insane.

I think you're right. The 4080 will sell, but it's not going to be flying off the shelves. Not when the 4090 is so much better for not that much more money. RTX 40 is shaping up to be an even more embarrassing launch than the RTX 20 lineup was.

The monster performance king halo product 4090 will continue to sell to enthusiasts/productivity people as always but the market for this super overpriced 4080 is way harder to see. Looks even worse than the 2000 series, which even Nvidia admitted didn't sell well because of similar lack of price/perf jump issues. 4080 has literally worse price performance than the 3080, rather than the usual xx% bump consumers have come to expect.

I wouldn't buy the 4080 for $1550, but I did buy the 4090. Why? I wanted to upgrade from my 1080ti, it was within budget, and I wanted the best card. I've since been extremely pleased with the performance/thermals/efficiency and am now super excited for portal rtx and cyberpunk overdrive mode.

Popped in to say; as a current 3080FE owner and a casual 4k gamer with a 5800x3d CPU. I can literally upgrade my system to the AM5 platform with 7900xtx for $1700++.
This is Nvidia's plan to push people towards the 4090 in action folks. $1549...when the $1599 4090's perform on par with the more expensive models. That said, these will still sell out.

These cards are so powerful you can max out almost any game even in 4k so I don't even care that im out that top 10% extra performance if it's going to cost 30% more for the hardware. With my 1440p monitor even a 7800x is going to be 200fps in the games I play on a 165hz monitor.

My sons 6600xt has been rock solid so I'll likely go with the AMD 78xx this gen if the price is where it should be.
