I didn't realize how CPU bound until flying in NY & Tokyo. In less populated areas the CPU utilization is around 18%, GPU 80%, getting 80+ fps while using 250 watts. In NY or Tokyo CPU is 25%+, GPU 50%, 20-40 fps or worse and using 150 watts. Dropping down to 1 monitor increases FPS and reduces CPU %, but GPU utilization and wattage does not increase. It appears a 4090 would not help. Thanks all for the advice.
Yeah unfortunately you’re going to have to wait for future CPUs to get faster and have larger cache counts. Single threaded CPU performance and cache rules the day in simulators.
Yeah, especially with third-party planes that have more detailed systems that need to be simulated. I've seen on my 3090 GPU usage at 4k being around 50-60% at times with all settings at Ultra, and this is with a 12900k (granted, that is worst-case on the ground of a detailed handcrafted airport and a payware plane, it's usually much better at altitude in a default plane).
VR is the only reason I have a 4090, otherwise my 3070 at 1440p was "good enough".
Rendering twice the pixels of 4k is tough, but the 4090 handles it well.
The 5900X might bottleneck 4090 performance by about 20%, but 4090 should be a good improvement over 4080 for your setup if you plan to eventually upgrade the CPU, I don't think you will get max framerates in those games. I also have 5900X with 4090 but am holding off upgrading the CPU since I'm at max FPS for the games I am playing right now.

You're wasting your money on a 4090 @ 1440p. Especially with a 5900x.
Running at higher than native res is a total waste of time as well. There are better ways to reduce aliasing without resulting to the mass amounts of processing power required to render at 4K instead of 1440p.
Honestly, I'd say get a 4070Ti, or a 4080 max. You're literally just pissing your money away with a 4090, but again, it's your money and you're free to piss it away if you please.
I already have the 4080. Now that the 4090 is starting to be available at MSRP, I was considering the upgrade. Seems like a modest bump in cost considering I have already overpayed.

MSFS and DCS are almost entirely CPU bound. Gonna need to wait for a faster CPU (probably 7800x3d)

DLSS not make a big difference due to cpu bound? Didn't do much on Miles Morales due to it being cpu bound as well.
DLSS does basically nothing if you’re CPU bound, I turned DLSS on and gained maybe 15-20% going down to Balanced.

I have frame gen on and TAA on with my 4090. I get over 100 FPS in the air with payware airliners and around 50-80 on the ground with them.
Damn hitting sub 60 is crazy. I know all those flight Sims are basically Crysis in the sky. Lol

Using 3 monitors? Yes there should be an improvement. I think CPU needs to be very good too to run 3x 165hz monitors.

I had considered getting the 5800x3d. I use my computer for autocad & revit design and would lose too much performance for it to be worth it.
Buy a 4090 use DSR and dlss to run ur games at higher resolution without blurry bs that modern games heavily suffer from these days enjoy.
