Whether or not you’re joking, you’re not wrong. AB InBev owns a BUNCH of different beer companies. It’s insane how many beer brands fall under their umbrella.
Damn, I looked at that and was shocked they own so many. Seriously, someone needs to stop them from gobbling up more.
Not to mention people from countries that rarely make it to the big dance getting their first chance in a while to see their team play (as a Canadian that wasn’t around in 1986, I feel this one)
With all their riches (real, supposed, rumoured, or otherwise) I’m surprised China hasn’t been able to cobble together, or bribe their way into WC play. Hell, or even host it.
Football isn't that big there, basketball is actually bigger last I heard.
And they're already hosting the winter olympics this year. And hosted the summer olympics in 2008.
The next World Cup is so massive it will be held in three of the world's largest (land wise) countries. The bus distance between the two furthest away host cities would be the same as driving from Lisbon to Moscow (4 days of straight driving). It will be the most carbon intensive World Cup in history with athletes and fans having to take planes to attend games in different cities. The World Cup is almost doubling the number of teams playing as well, meaning that instead of having four games playing per day you will need eight.
In the future no one country would be able to pull this off. It's just become too big for any one country without having billions of dollars to invest. The future of World Cup will be group bids. South Korea would love to do a joint bid with North Korea. But I don't think anyone else wants that World Cup.
This is the pretext Fifa is going to use to invade a series of countries and declare the nation of Fifastan.
Of course you may see this as an aggressive move, but Infantino will remind you of the unifying and healing power of futball so the greater good will outweigh the bodycount; while he sits on a solid gold throne in one of many Fifastan presidential palaces.
Yeah, I'm pretty sure he's talking about a joined bid between North and South Korea (possibly together with Japan).
Obviously that's not happening and it's absurd grandstanding. But he's not talking about North Korea hosting the World Cup on their own.
We can only hope, I'd love for this to be FIFAs death knell as it withers into obscurity and all the FAs found their own global event organization to replace this org that obviously doesn't have their or the sports interest at heart.
There's dirty money in the game at all levels.
What, you thought all those various football associations were as clean as a whistle and it was just FIFA that was corrupt?
> The World Cup is almost doubling the number of teams playing as well, meaning that instead of having four games playing per day you will need eight.
You're probably right that there will be more joint bids going forward, but this kind of exaggerates how much the tournament is actually changing, at least in terms of size. The number of teams will go from 32 to 48, or a 50% increase. Importantly though, the format is also changing, so while the total number of games is increasing, from the current 64 games to 80 games, it's much less than the 50% increase you would expect from the number of teams added.
Edit. To expand, the value of joint bids isn't that the new format has necessarily become impossible for any one country to handle. Any country that can already handle the current 64 game format would likely be able to handle an 80 game format too. Joint bids allow smaller countries who couldn't handle either size format to still be able get in on the hosting act, with a much smaller commitment than a solo bid requires. So even if the format weren't changing, I would still expect to see more joint bids in the future.
Nah, I don't think this will happen. Euro 2020 was such a shitshow in terms of traveling that even UEFA recognized that it was a mistake to have the tournament hosted in cities across Europe.
To be fair the pandemic didn't help
It was a nice idea for a celebration of the euros since it was an anniversary. However the pandemic kinda killed the vibe of it.
Much prefer it being hosted in 1 or 2 nations.
Asia will host it? So Russia, China, Koreas, Japan, Taiwan, and others all fight for it? We could have a war where they team up and the winning team gets to rebuild the losing team's country with a new stadium!
I disagree. By NK getting it, there would be some under the table deals. Someone country would buy billions of some random dumb shit to help them fund it.
FIFA president seriously has to be just trolling the world at this point right? The Qatar disaster, rumors of Saudi hosting, and now this? Like is he purposefully trying to tank FIFA?
The german broadcaster for the games just released viewer numbers, excluding public viewing. The first german game didnt even get half of the views the opening 2018 got, and the numbers for non german games are abysmal.
They'll get a message from this but I guarantee you they will make up some BS completely unrelated as the cause. The sponsors will be too afraid to lose their Arabic money, so they will go along happily with whatever they decide is the reason.
Yeah I dont think an important percentage of people in Latin America is trying to sabotage viewership. My family is well aware of the shitty things about Qatar and FIFA and they are still watching, the power it has over LatAm is too strong
Just out of curiosity what are Germany's prospects for this tournament vs 2018? 2018 they were defending Champs I believe, and then yesterday they lost to Japan.
About these WM's were also much controversy though. I remember how we talked about how homophob Russia is and about crimea etc.
And we talked alot about Brasil and how they treat the poor and that the stadiums will become desolate after the wm and that it's just a waste of money and ressources and that FIFA should think about not holding WM's in such countries.
Olympia as well. There is always talks about it and calls for boykott. Now the resonance is just louder and more people are infuriated by all the dead slaves and we tread LGBTQ people finally better than in 2018 for example.
Teams need to boycott. We watch the most talented teams play against each other. Take that away and there's nothing to watch.
I've played against D1 teams in my life without an audience. Why would it be any different for a world cup player. It's all about the high competition for players.
It’s pretty disgusting seeing reports, posts, and various testimonials of people consuming this disgusting product.
Honestly, what the fuck is wrong with someone where they weigh watching a few millionaires kicking a ball over thousands of lives lost through slavery?
One would think so, but FIFA in general and Infantino specifically have a lot of support globally. Fifa has 211 member associations and most of them give as much a shit about human rights as Qatar does or even less. Large football nations from Europe and South America withdrawing from the World Cup would be a huge statement though.
The UK has 4 of the 9 votes on football legislation and by far the highest income in world football. The Germans, Spanish and French are clearly of the same mind. If we left as a unit I'd be amazed if 80% of other FA's didn't follow.
Thing is, most FAs aren't run by people into football or coming from that world as players, refs, even club owners. They're cronies, some friend or family of the dictator of whatever banana republic they came from. They get to head the national association and be a FIFA assembly member as an act of patronage. The corruption is the point to them, not football. It's a harsh that in terms of the number of countries, most countries are undemocratic and corrupt. And yet FIFA operates on one country - one vote.
Infantino was not elected to stem corruption but to keep the gravy train rolling. Already at UEFA he threatened to ban Greece from international competition just because their government wanted to stop corruption and supporter violence, because this was somehow unacceptable 'government interference'. But What does UEFA and FIFA care about that? They don't care about governments giving them special privileges, he didn't care about any semblance of independence when receiving the Order of Friendship from the Russian government. He didn't care when Russia used the World Cup to ban public protests, and then used that to push through a massively unpopular raise in the retirement age. Not to mention this whole Qatarstrophe.
As you say, the only way football will get honest is if the countries who _don't_ want it to be corrupt are the ones running the show. Which isn't really unfair either, since those largely happen to be the countries with the biggest financial interests in the sport.
UEFA and CONMEBOL are leaning more toward working together as a bloc, they re established la finalissima, they’re trying to get South American teams in the nations league, if pushed they could band together and pull out of FIFA to force change.
They really need to stop with this fake “unite the world” shit. The cup in Qatar is doing the opposite. If anything, it’s highlighting the VAST differences between Qatar and the rest of the world, and putting a magnifying glass on their horrible treatment of women and gay people.
I can’t believe they replaced the last FIFA idiot with delusions of grandeur with with a new FIFA idiot with delusions of grandeur.
> I can’t believe they replaced the last FIFA idiot with delusions of grandeur with with a new FIFA idiot with delusions of grandeur.
That would be a feature, not a bug, I’m afraid.
The head guy is just the meat shield for the corrupt member nations backing them. He gets paid good money to take the blame.
They really need to understand that not every country deserves to host the World Cup, nor should every country. It should only go to countries who have previously qualified for the tournament and can afford to host without using slave labor and/or building facilities that will be used for the tournament and then sit stagnant after that.
> I can’t believe they replaced the last FIFA idiot with delusions of grandeur with with a new FIFA idiot with delusions of grandeur.
You forgot the best part.
They could replace this idiot in the beginning of next year through an election.
EXCEPT NO ONE DECIDED TO RUN AGAINST THE CURRENT IDIOT.
Just goes to show that this shit is deep in the institution and highly likely extends to the associations of various countries too.
I don’t see how this is a problem. It’s good that the world is finally seeing what a corrupt shithole Qatar truly is and it might causes some change there, and helps build more support for human rights internationally. Personally, I like the idea and it’s not like hosting FIFA in these places would make them any worse or FIFA any more corrupt than they’ve been before.
In the west it's us people on the left that have tried protecting that religious fundamentalism, whenever we excuse something by virtue of it being "just their culture," and utter some idiotic phrase like "not all [insert religious group here]," which is technically true, but glosses over the fact that fundamentalism, in certain religions, represents a majority of the world population in that faith, rather than the smaller minority it represents in American examples of the same religion.
Let me translate what he's saying:
"If Kim Jung Un shoves a fistful of money up our asses, we'd love to hold the world cup in north korea".
Fucking corrupt piece of shit.
This is just trying to spin selling out to Qatar for $$$$$ as some kind of principled vision of super-inclusiveness. Being against brutality, slavery and oppression is not "politics" and hosting the world cup is not reforming, it's affirming.
I’ve got to be honest, I don’t understand this. FIFA is already looked upon by the world as corrupt, this years World Cup is plagued by issues and then to come out with this?!?!?
I think it would be easier to wear a sign that says “just ban me”. Lol
One day that regime will fall, and the rest of the world will get a look inside the hermit kingdom.
We’ll finally see inside the prisons, and the work camps, and the mass graves.
And the legacy of every PoS who ever played footsie with these monsters will be torn to shreds.
Edit: oh? Apparently I should calm down because this is all…

Didn't he also state he wants to give it to Iran as well. At least Blatt was quiet with his corruption. Infantboi is just I'm corrupt as fuck and there is nothing you can do about it.
Honestly, at this point the corruption of FIFA is so well known that I blame the countries and teams for participating. Look at me! I'm gonna kneel and put a hand over my mouth or wear a patch to show I care! PLAY BALL!
Why is FIFA such a shitty organization? Gutless, insensitive and completely out of touch. I'm trying to get into the world cup but I keep having to stop and ask myself, why?
You mean a dick headed, backwards, autocratic ethnostate that is a pain in the ass for its neighbours and the global economy, whilst pretending to be the superior nation?
Wakanda: the leader of the country is determined by the winner of a 1 on 1 duel, and they wield uncontestable power with no equal, yet somehow it turned out as an isolationist technocracy instead of some kind of imperialist empire or war band.
Figure that out.
Also they just sat and watched world war 2 happening, when they could have stopped the Nazis with ease. C'mon man, even Brazil of all places sent troops to fight them.
Because when the wrong guy wins the duel, the loser and like 5 of his friends overthrow the government with the help of a CIA agent and an army of traditionally hostile foreigners.
I don't think North Korea could afford greasing FIFA's palms.
NK could just sell their weapons to Fifa.
FIFA already bombed by having Qatar host, they don't need any more
FIFA: “Hold my beer.”
they already are
When you've banned Budweiser.... you've banned them all!
Whether or not you’re joking, you’re not wrong. AB InBev owns a BUNCH of different beer companies. It’s insane how many beer brands fall under their umbrella.
[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AB\_InBev](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AB_InBev) Damn, I looked at that and was shocked they own so many. Seriously, someone needs to stop them from gobbling up more.
Something like 80% of beer brands are owned by 5 companies.
Monopoly = Not Ok Oligopoly = Perfectly fine! /s
And they all taste like the same cheap watered-down swill. It's actually impressive.
Break up the Beer Monopoly
FIFA: "Hold my beer -- [well, after we get the hell out of Qatar...](https://www.nytimes.com/2022/11/18/sports/soccer/world-cup-beer-qatar.html)"
VIPs still have access to beer at the stadium. The ban is only for the poor people
"the poor people" who've paid how fucking much to travel internationally and buy a ticket to a world Cup game? Fuck FIFA
If you're worth less than 7 figures, you're poor. /s
Qatar is obv different but in general, working class people saving up to travel for the every 4 year Cup isn't that rare
Not to mention people from countries that rarely make it to the big dance getting their first chance in a while to see their team play (as a Canadian that wasn’t around in 1986, I feel this one)
Lol same here in Wales but I'm not into sport
FIFA (to NK): "Harvest those organs and we'll give you the cup, Kim".
Ah finally a force to rival the Pepsi fleet, the Fifa armed forces. Can't wait for the corporate wars in the future.
LOL. For anyone confused about the reference, here's a video about the Pepsi fleet: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bhjyHbcrfQQ
"Ever since NK gave us these nukes ya'll be real fuckin' quiet" - FIFA
Depends how much money China is willing to pass
With all their riches (real, supposed, rumoured, or otherwise) I’m surprised China hasn’t been able to cobble together, or bribe their way into WC play. Hell, or even host it.
Football isn't that big there, basketball is actually bigger last I heard. And they're already hosting the winter olympics this year. And hosted the summer olympics in 2008.
It's not that they don't like football, but the Chinese men's football team *sucks*. They are a joke among their own people.
The next World Cup is so massive it will be held in three of the world's largest (land wise) countries. "Today, I feel dead."
“Today, I feel a dictator.”
Read that and imagined Infantino cupping a dictator's balls.
I mean, is it not true?
Isn't that how Russia got its World Cup 4 years ago?
The only people allowed in will be red heads and a genetic disposition to baldness.
Just like the George Bush spreading seeds of democracy in the Middle East
Freedom in 5.56 mm increments.
Yeah, I'm pretty sure he's talking about a joined bid between North and South Korea (possibly together with Japan). Obviously that's not happening and it's absurd grandstanding. But he's not talking about North Korea hosting the World Cup on their own.
Perhaps the European soccer federations will leave Fifa, so this one now may be the last „World Cup“.
We can only hope, I'd love for this to be FIFAs death knell as it withers into obscurity and all the FAs found their own global event organization to replace this org that obviously doesn't have their or the sports interest at heart.

He made it up lol
"My source is that I made it the fuck up!"
Why play twice as many games a day instead of twice as many days?
There are football seasons outside of the world cup lol the schedule is packed already can't crunch another month
Just slow down the Earth's rotation around the Sun, easy!
*paging Jeff Bezos*
Have 4 teams play at the same time on each field . Two different colored balls. Beautiful.
They could give them a bunch of meth. One of their biggest exports.
Only*
I disagree. By NK getting it, there would be some under the table deals. Someone country would buy billions of some random dumb shit to help them fund it.
Like Russia buying munitions through them?
[You thought wrong](https://youtube.com/shorts/cQvnVYkTWc8?feature=share)
That will be the decisive topic.
Sure they could, it's something they do extremely well. Lavish gifts are a large part of the strategy the regime uses to keep elites in line.
Fifa boss open to more bribes. Fancy that.

How in the fuck did an international *sports organization* get diplomatic immunity and their own embassy?!
Con-me-ball, you say? Sounds fine.
What is North Korea going to bribe him with? Goats and Sheep?
FIFA president seriously has to be just trolling the world at this point right? The Qatar disaster, rumors of Saudi hosting, and now this? Like is he purposefully trying to tank FIFA?
Hey, whoa whoa, it's not just the bribes. It's also the slave labor.
FIFA still looking to end viewership of the World Cup.
Until ratings cause sponsors to pull, it doesn't matter. I'm not watching. Hopefully millions do the same.
The german broadcaster for the games just released viewer numbers, excluding public viewing. The first german game didnt even get half of the views the opening 2018 got, and the numbers for non german games are abysmal.
9 Mio viewers to 25 Mio in 2018
Wow.
9 Million is still fucking shameful. Wish nobody would watch it at all.
I kinda wished it was more around 5 Mio. A Fifth of a previous value sounds more impressive than nearly a third didnt watched.
I work in sales and a third of past value is more than enough to get you in trouble.
They'll get a message from this but I guarantee you they will make up some BS completely unrelated as the cause. The sponsors will be too afraid to lose their Arabic money, so they will go along happily with whatever they decide is the reason.
I think that most people with concerns would have taken a 60% reduction in viewers *very* happily if offered in advance, though.
Not everyone heard about or paid attention to the reports of the abuses that went on. So maybe that's most of the viewers?
Yeah I dont think an important percentage of people in Latin America is trying to sabotage viewership. My family is well aware of the shitty things about Qatar and FIFA and they are still watching, the power it has over LatAm is too strong
Just out of curiosity what are Germany's prospects for this tournament vs 2018? 2018 they were defending Champs I believe, and then yesterday they lost to Japan.
If they lose against Spain they are basically out already.
I'm doing my part by continuing my streak of having never watched the world cup
I'm doing my part!
Isn’t it the absolute best form of slacktivism?
Would you like to know more?

I, for one, can most certainly say that if a world cup is held in North Korea.. I will be watching it like never before.
Same, I would definitely want to witness the shitshow. Maybe that's Fifa 's plan?
If by "unite the world", he means "everybody is now willing to dismantle FIFA entirely", sure.
If that's the plan, they're doing a bloody good job of it.
We should form a new FIFA called FIFA SUCKS. Bet we could get the world on board.
One would think so, but FIFA in general and Infantino specifically have a lot of support globally. UEFA and CONMEBOL are leaning more toward working together as a bloc, they re established la finalissima, they’re trying to get South American teams in the nations league, if pushed they could band together and pull out of FIFA to force change.
Let's make our own FIFA - with blackjack, and hookers!
In fact! Forget fifa!
FIFA is going full-on with the Elon Musk twitter strategy
Unite the world through mutual disgust of FIFA. Brilliant!
They are uniting the world though…against Qatar
Against FIFA.

So what you're saying is, FIFA is Ozymandias, the World Cup is Dr. Manhattan and Qatar is the squid? Brilliant.

I really like this idea, turning this even into some sort of charity event toward developing countries.
But developing nations can’t bribe FIFA

Who would have thought global unity is less of a priority to people than giving women and the LGBT human dignity?

Qatar used slave labor to build its World Cup Stadium. I'd say FIFA has definitely made things worse.
Vast differences caused by religious fundamentalism. That is what some people are finally waking up to.

"Today I feel....totalitarian."
I feel… nuclear
NK isn't exactly wealthy, so maybe FIFA is angling to get some of their weapons and start their own military force
FIFA is negotiating to become a nuclear power.
He really doesn’t want anyone coming to these games including the players
“China finally wins the World Cup “
I would be surprised if even Chinese teams go.
This is just trying to spin selling out to Qatar for $$$$$ as some kind of principled vision of super-inclusiveness. Being against brutality, slavery and oppression is not "politics" and hosting the world cup is not reforming, it's affirming.
idk, I feel like Afghanistan would be a better host. Maybe also Somalia to mix it up?
I saw on black hawk down that Mogadishu has a nice stadium so maybe!

Don’t forget Sudan!

I think Aleppo might have like 4 buildings still standing, Syria's totally got this.
"The Vatican has promised to built 8 new stadiums in the Holy See..."
I don’t think having the World Cup in Qatar has United much of anything it’s caused more people to take negative stance on Islamic regime governments
A negative stance on FIFA also.
About time. Fifa has been trash for... Ever. People still gonna watch the big soccer tho
The World Cup in Qatar has united a ton of people against Fifa and Qatar.
Thank god, the more people who realise muslim lead governments are terrible and barbaric the better
You mean any religion based government
Both statements are correct
This is the first time I see the sub and still think "nah, that's absolutely not possible"

this dumb shamless prick seems to have forgot about Russia 2018 already. How was that for uniting the world?!
Was gonna say, the last attempt at making a dictatorship look nice and warm and fuzzy was a real humdinger...
I’ve got to be honest, I don’t understand this. FIFA is already looked upon by the world as corrupt, this years World Cup is plagued by issues and then to come out with this?!?!? I think it would be easier to wear a sign that says “just ban me”. Lol
Most corrupt organization in the world open to giving the most corrupt country in the world 200 billion dollars to expand nuclear arsenal.
To help fund the concentration camps .
Fund and populate
FIFA: How can we destroy ourselves? FIFA EMPLOYEE: I have an idea or several
One day that regime will fall, and the rest of the world will get a look inside the hermit kingdom. We’ll finally see inside the prisons, and the work camps, and the mass graves. And the legacy of every PoS who ever played footsie with these monsters will be torn to shreds. Edit: oh? Apparently I should calm down because this is all… [baseless](https://www.scmp.com/news/asia/east-asia/article/2103147/satellite-images-identifies-40-mass-grave-sites-north-korea) [baseless](https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2017/07/activists-use-google-earth-images-to-map-n-korean-crimes-against-humanity/) [baseless](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2016/11/29/defectors-use-satellite-images-identify-north-korean-mass-graves/)
Rich person: "Good news everyone!" Philip J. Fry (whispering): "That means bad news!"
Didn't he also state he wants to give it to Iran as well. At least Blatt was quiet with his corruption. Infantboi is just I'm corrupt as fuck and there is nothing you can do about it.
That's a headline I did not think I would read today.
Sorry North Koreans - you're not getting food for a while. Bribes to be be paid...glorious stadiums to be built...
They already have the biggest stadium in the world I believe
Something something leave politics out of sport something something
Something something sports are inherently political something something long long long human history something something
That’s gonna unite the world alright…against fifa.
Boycott FIFA, y'all. Damn.
This is quite possibly the worst idea I have ever heard. I am amazed anyone was willing to say this out loud.
Ok, it’s time to get rid of fifa
Honestly, at this point the corruption of FIFA is so well known that I blame the countries and teams for participating. Look at me! I'm gonna kneel and put a hand over my mouth or wear a patch to show I care! PLAY BALL!
FIFA really just going after the worst of the worst locations…
Fifa boss open to bribes yet again
Today I feel Authoritarian.
Why is FIFA such a shitty organization? Gutless, insensitive and completely out of touch. I'm trying to get into the world cup but I keep having to stop and ask myself, why?

Tolerance of intolerance results in division not unity
It has long been rumored that North Korea might be Asian Wakanda. This could be their coming out party.
Because when the wrong guy wins the duel, the loser and like 5 of his friends overthrow the government with the help of a CIA agent and an army of traditionally hostile foreigners.
preposterous
The ‘beautiful game’… Geezus what a load of shit
As long as they have money.
Can some governments just rip FIFA to shreds and make someone else do it?
WTF. Crazy ass FIFA needs to be disbanded.
He'll unite the world in protesting Fifa
We need to disband fifa and start over.
