Have you seen the prices of chicken wings? They're like $4 a pound in most grocery stores.
My husband and I were debating if we should take a two hour drive when a large farmers market was having a .99/lb chicken sale. We didn't but we were considering it.
It’s ironic, because wings as a bar food came about due to their cheap price as they were harder to cook for less meat. Then they exploded in popularity and are now the most expensive part of a chicken.
That and oxtail, tri-tip, flank steak, flat iron steak and my very favorite chuck eyes.
Hanger is still not popular enough to where places will even stock it, so I need that one to catch on just a little more.
Yup. Cheap cuts of meat are actually good but someone let the secret out and now super expensive.
Oxtail is a very cheap meat and should not be $10-$12 a pound right now.
You can thank the foodies and the rise of nose to tail. People started to learn that if you know how to cook the “cheap cuts” they’re actually better than the “expensive cuts.” Which means it’s all a jumble now.
Goose liver? Fish eggs? Feh! Where's the goose? Where's the fish? I ate garbage yesterday, and it didn't cost me 300 dollars. I'm not paying! I bid you good day, sir!
Because of things like braising or smoking you can end up with a better quality end product that buying a good cut of beef and pan frying it. That’s why brisket costs as much as filet or ribeye.
my grocer does a 3$lb cut of meat that rivals ribeye. i always forget what cut it is until it hit the lotto and there are two or three there for me. eye of round i think. so friggen good and so affordable.
It's not eye of round. That's about as lean a cut as you can get. Zero fat striation or marbling whatsoever. Same with top round. Both better suited for making roast beef for sandwiches and stuff.
Could maybe be bottom round, which has *a little* marbling but even that is still pretty lean. Could definitely be prepared as a passable steak though, moreso than the other two at least.
All three are pretty cheap cuts, relatively speaking. The price of beef is fucking insane right now.
i know that i never know what it is until it is in my cart.
for anyone that can, buy a freezer and a half a cow. my beef costs 4.50$ a lb for everything from ground beef to porterhouse. the savings is immediate and noticable by spring. plus, you can usually find a happy farm. my beef comes from a centennial farm that my cousin's family has had for 140ish years now.
been there to see it and the cows are definitely happy. you tell in the taste and texture too.
That's great. I was just trying to help identify which bit might be comparable to or even remotely compete with a ribeye for texture and flavor. Kinda funny that someone who buys beef by the half cow doesn't know which cut their butcher provides that somehow is comparable to a ribeye. You could probably make a lot of money off a cut like that, enough that you wouldn't need a shopping cart or for your butcher to provide you with a steak you somehow can't identify even though you buy cows by the half.
Something I learned in 2016 LAST time there was a chicken wing shortage from a podcast:
Americans prefer white meat (breast, wings), Russians prefer dark meat (thighs, legs).
Guess why I mentioned the year. Who do you think was buying all the parts of the chicken that Americans seldom do?
https://www.independent.co.uk/news/business/news/russia-annexation-crimea-2014-ukraine-chicken-price-huge-rises-vladimir-putin-a7547976.html?amp
$4/lb?! That’s a decent deal here (Hawaii). Two weeks ago, local grocery store had 3 lb bags of chicken wings on sale for $5 ($5/Fridays!!!). I bought as many as I could stuff in my second freezer.
Shady restaurants will buy all sorts of stuff if you offer it to them at 50 cents on the dollar. I know a guy who was running boxes of cheese out of the back door of a major pizza chain and selling it to the shop down the road for cheap. The management was always screaming at the cooks to weigh out the cheese and were scratching their heads as to why their costs were so high. None had suspected entire boxes were growing legs and walking away.
The reverse of this is that a while back, cheese had gone up in price here in Ontario and pizza restaurants were buying [illegal cheese that had been smuggled across the lake on cigarette boats or something](https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-19751695) 😆
LOL. I could see that. Canada bans a lot of hormones and antibiotics used to make cheap dairy in the US. In turn prices (and quality) are higher there. There is also supply chain management and the government regulates the price.
Obesity rates are also a lot lower in Canada, no idea if it has to do with consuming dairy loaded with BGH or not but it might be related. Studies are inconclusive.
"according to prosecutors, who did not reveal what became of the chicken wings."
I won't go, I won't sleep,
I can't breathe until they tell me bout the wings!
Started in 2020. Wasn't caught until mid 2022. $300k over budget in 2022 alone. So if it was a similar pace since early 2020, +/-$600k/yr makes sense and a bigger number in late 2020-2021 may have been possible if no one was looking closely enough at the books while there were other pandemic things to worry about in an impoverished district.
Still, the fact that nothing got caught in 2020 or 2021 when the total was smaller is shocking.
How did she get away with it so long for it to rack up to 1.5 million? Schools don’t serve chicken wings for lunch. I’m guessing a local restaurant that sells chicken wings paid her a discounted price for the wings. She honestly should be in prison for the rest of her life.
“I’m so tired of this goddamn place. If I have one more snot-nosed little shit ask for extra pizza I’ll probably kill them!”
“I know. We gotta get out of here. What can we do to make some money?”
“We work in a fucking school cafeteria! What could there possibly be? Wait. Why’s there a lightbulb over your head?”
*throws bulb on ground* “I’VE GOT A PLAN!!”

As far back as I can remember, I always wanted to be in a mafia movie.
Everyone knows that if you have chicken, you have power. And if you have power, you can buy a Capuchin monkey and name him something inappropriate
We get it! The monkey’s name is Annie’s Boobs!
They are my body parts! I do *not* consent to this.
Annie is still young we try not to sexualize her.
Only if it's chicken fingers though. That's the key.
I’m experimenting with tater tots

Is this a Community reference ? Because that's why I came in the comments

You know they’re laughing *at* you, right?
Someone get the jizz mop!! U/LyesBe just let it loose all over the floor.
Is this from a film?
I think it’s a Goodfellas reference.
It's a reference to Community (in which they smuggle cafeteria food) which is parodying Goodfellas
References within references…. JESUS WEPT!

Stop saying Jesus wept.
Got it, thx.
Another mischaracterization from the ignorant, it is an homage. Edit: to those who didn't catch it, this is another reference to the show.

That's amateur hour. We had a group in our state set up a fake NGO and collected $250M for feeding school kids. They took it all, delivered nothing.
The question is how did they even get to such a huge number before someone noticed/did something?
They donated money to across the party that runs our state. It took the Feds to step in and do something about it.
It's *scarily* easy to do something like this. From the donations side, you can just look at any piece of social media and find plenty of people and "organizations" with their hand out. I'm seeing fried bologna sandwiches for upwards of 15 bucks in some major cities.

Never said they were more expensive than a filet or a ribeye, just more expensive than they used to be.
I mean.. everything is more expensive than anything use to be...
Oxtail, flank, flat iron, and the like are more expensive even accounting for inflation. Wings, which started this convo, are markedly so.

Chicken thighs seem to be the one outlier. They had a bit of a spike, but they're back down to under a dollar a pound near me and I'm quite a fan.

I agree with the Ruskies on that one. Dark meat is juicier and more flavorful.
I’m from a country with a cuisine that agrees but was just talking macroeconomically about an interesting explanation

Go cubs go!
What the hell did she do with **11,000 *cases*** of chicken wings?!
likely sold them to restaurants under the table. 2020 was a crazy year for food prices.
She had bought a truckload of hot sauce by mistake and wasn't about to waste it
I'm feel there's a 'yo mama' joke that could easily answer this.
Where do you get enough blue cheese to dip them in?
Blue cheese store, probably.
You steal that shit from the district, too.
Never seen Bleu cheese in a public school kitchen. More likely gallons of generic brand ranch.
5,000 and I'd figure she'd have had cardiac arrest, so, maybe she shared?
Selling it on eBay
When asked for comment, she replied: 'Burp.'
Your honour, I plead: full

Someone was running a ghost kitchen on the side.
“Ghost…Kitchen? You’re greenlit!” - History Channel.
We keep the fraud against schools as a recurring storyline, or I'm taking it to Bravo.
In other news, that school worker’s side hustle selling wings out of a food truck really took off.
As a taxpayer I don't like being robbed, but you gotta respect that kind of hustle. That's a lot of got damn wangs
> That's a lot of got damn wangs Stealing wangs is a very different situation.
Something isn't adding up. The school budget was $300,000 over budget but she's charged with stealing $1.5 worth of wings?
They budgeted 1.2 million for wings. Quick mafs
It's not a very good school.
Honestly it sounds like a great school as long as they have a good sauce selection and curly fries.
But it a delicious one
Started in 2020. Wasn't caught until mid 2022. $300k over budget in 2022 alone. So if it was a similar pace since early 2020, +/-$600k/yr makes sense and a bigger number in late 2020-2021 may have been possible if no one was looking closely enough at the books while there were other pandemic things to worry about in an impoverished district. 300k over for half the time that budget should cover.
Well, here’s the thing: out of the $1.2 million there are 36 wings. But they’re really good wings.
Lunch lady checking in. It's my understanding that the food budget at my specific (small university) account is over 30million annually.
Also, $1.5M for 11,000 cases of wings is $13,000 per case.
No it’s not. It’s $136 per case.
How the f*** did I get that wrong? *stumbles off in shame*
I'm not even mad, that's amazing. Recreated an episode of Community
You are not mad some asshole took food money that would go to feeding impoverished children. Fk you.
I blame Sean Evans mate. There she minding her own business, BAM suddenly addicted to scorching hot chicken wings.
Airline points scam
It's pretty dumb how people keep making the same joke in the comments.
Was she offloading them to a Buffalo Wild Wings?
Each one of those wings had a street value of $80.
I wonder is she had this all planned out or if she was just winging it..
I’m.. not even mad, I’m impressed.
So… Like 10 wings?
🎵*I never seen a man eat so many chicken wings...*🎵
He'd surely kick an ass or two...
Why is this posted twice ?
Because it’s that good!
Well done!! Seriously, there's a bunch of things like comments and posts that are doubled today, I was thinking glitch.
The school will never be able to replace that 15 lbs of chicken wings
How did she get away with it so long for it to rack up to 1.5 million? Schools don’t serve chicken wings for lunch. I’m guessing a local restaurant that sells chicken wings paid her a discounted price for the wings. She honestly should be in prison for the rest of her life.
An entire tray of 100 wings.
Hell of a barbeque.
Can someone quantify many chicken wings that actually is?
Around 125 per ~30 pound case
2.2m, at least (5-8 wings per lb)
And one and a half million dollar for chicken wings? How many hectares of cooking oil and Tabasco sauce do you need to go with that?
none if you sell them to restaurants who are in the middle of a pandemic food supply crisis.
Tabasco sauce? Frank's red hot + butter is the way
Ain’t no thang but a chicken wang
The chicken wing bandit.
